Everyone’s favourite serial killer is back, and she’s more unpredictable than ever…
Readers LOVE Thorn in My Side
Sometimes, you can be your own worst enemy…
Rhiannon Lewis thought she finally had it thanks to the pandemic she’s had to keep a much lower profile but has found happiness with her fiancé Rafael and his family. For once, she is surrounded by people who love her for who she is (or who they think she is).
After over 800 days without murdering anyone, the woman formerly known as the Sweetpea Killer thinks she might have finally turned over a new leaf.
That is until her soon-to-be sister-in-law has a run in with her abusive ex, and Rhiannon rediscovers her taste for revenge. This time, with a loving family in tow, the stakes are much higher. Wedded bliss and life as a normal person are finally within Rhiannon's reach, but you can never keep a good serial killer down.
Can you?

C.J. SKUSE is the author of the Young Adult novels PRETTY BAD THINGS, ROCKOHOLIC and DEAD ROMANTIC (Chicken House), MONSTER and THE DEVIANTS (Mira Ink). She was born in 1980 in Weston-super-Mare, England. She has First Class degrees in Creative Writing and Writing for Children and, aside from writing novels lectures in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University. C.J. is currently working on adult novel SWEETPEA for HQ/HarperCollins (out April 2017).
C.J. loves Masterchef, Gummy Bears and murder sites. She hates carnivals, hard-boiled eggs and coughing. The movies Titanic, My Best Friend's Wedding and Ruby Sparks were all probably based on her ideas; she just didn't get to write them down in time. Before she dies, she would like to go to Japan, try clay-pigeon shooting and have Ryan Gosling present her with the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Thorn In My Side is another entry in C.J. Skuse’s Sweetpea series. Picking up with our unfiltered, loveable disaster of a protagonist, Rhiannon, this book gives you exactly what you want—dark humor, sharp commentary, and a main character you can’t help but be obsessed with.
Rhiannon’s voice is still the highlight—she’s brutally honest, totally outrageous, and somehow even more layered in this book. You get a deeper peek into her psyche, showing a side of her that’s both vulnerable and messed up in all the right ways. She’s still a mess, but it’s hard not to root for her.
The pacing is pretty solid, though there are a couple of slower spots that serve more to build up the tension than drag things down. Some of the subplots could have been developed a bit more, but overall, the story keeps you hooked with its usual blend of wild moments and unexpected twists. The supporting characters add their fair share of drama, humor, and, naturally, a touch of awkwardness that only makes things more entertaining.
If you’ve been following the series, Thorn In My Side won’t disappoint. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but definitely sharpens what’s already been working. It’s dark, clever, and surprisingly emotional in parts. Another solid read for fans of the series.
Who the hell ends a book like that. You’re a monster Skuse!!! Favourite of the series so far, Rhi has grown as a character so much. Of course you still get her crazy thought farts, and those one liners, and the lists!! Raf is top of the book boyfriend list, you can’t have him he’s mine!! If you’ve got this far in the series you know what you’re getting and this didn’t disappoint. The only question now is when the bloody hell is number 5?! Thanks for the laughs Bean Qween, it’s been a blast!
I couldn’t download this ALC fast enough when I saw it available for December … thank you so much Libro.FM and Harper Collins. I love Georgia Maguire narrating this series, she brings Rhiannon to life.
Absolutely love this series. Sweetpea, aka Rhiannon Lewis is back and I was so happy!! She is now living in San Diego with her fiancée Raf, working as a receptionist and not killing anyone. And she is happy for the first time in her life, expect that she is not with her daughter. The world thinks she is dead, her new family don’t know the truth about her and life is pretty good. Until she feels the urge to kill again..
This book was funny, it was emotional and it made me smile. I liked to see Rhiannon happy after everything she has been through. This is the 4th book in the series so please start at the beginning and read them all, you won’t regret it.
Wasn’t really expecting much from this book but ended up being thoroughly surprised. This is probably the most unhinged book I’ve read, it’s very different and it’s a refreshing read from all the similar books I’ve read. I’ll definitely remember the plot of this one due to how unique the plot is.
I’ve not read the sweet pea series or heard of the author but the plot and storyline across the four books is very easy to pick up and follow. It’s not for the faint hearted and along the way alot of paedos are killed.
This was definitely the slowest book of the series, but I still enjoyed the twists & turns as much as the last few books!
And that ENDING 🤯 there had better be a fifth book in the works because I can’t possibly rest until I know what happens. This is a series that I never expected to love so much, but I’m so damn glad that I’ve read it 🖤
Edited to add - I’ve just been on the author’s Instagram & Twitter page and we’re apparently getting a fifth & final Sweetpea novel this year. Day made 🤭
So glad to be back with my favourite serial killer who is still on the run and, unbelievably, she is still on the wagon! Over 800 days since she last got the urge to murder and she is all loved up and about to settle down with fiance Raf, but can she ignore what is happening to Raf's sister and maintain her streak? While also staying off determined Detective Gericault's radar and blocking out news from back home?
This is the fourth in this brilliant series and Rhiannon is back and as funny and foul-mouthed as ever. It still feels a little bit concerning how much I identify with her and I could honestly write almost all of her brilliant lists myself! It is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but having loved rhe series since Sweetpea, I have loved seeing the growth of this excellent character and after that ending... bring on book 5!
The Sweetpea series is one of my favorites, and Rhiannon is one of the best characters I have ever read. After how great Dead Head was, I was anxiously waiting to see if the series would continue, and was so pumped when it did!
That being said, Thorn in My Side wasn't my favorite. There was an unfortunate trend with books written the first year or two after Covid hit where tried and true authors just weren't putting out their usual caliber of books... Absolutely not a criticism, it was a terrible time for all of us, but TIMS falls into that category. The pacing, the writing, the story just wasn't as great as I have come to expect from this author.
I'm so glad she fought to keep this series going and I still love Rhiannon with a weird kind of fervor. Cannot wait for the final installment! 3.5 stars rounded up
I was really reluctant to give this 3 stars, as I absolutely love the sweetpea series and CJ Skuse’s writing but I had to be honest. I found there to be quite a lot of build up for little pay off. Will I be still rushing to buy the next one if/when it comes out, absolutely! I’m still so invested in Rihannon’s story, I just was left feeling a bit deflated with this book in the series.
I’ve now read all of the books in the series and I have really enjoyed them all. I’m not sure if this is the definite last one or not but am hoping not. Not only for how this one ends but because Rhiannon is such a brilliant character.
This book follows on from the where the last one ended. Rhiannon is settling into her new life with Rafael and his family and it has been a long time since she killed. Although she is still constantly looking over her shoulder and wondering if anyone will catch up to her, she is missing the thrill of a kill and is starting to get itchy feet. I really felt for her as she is trying to make a go of her new life and you can see how much she loves Rafael but she is unable to stop bad people getting to her and wanting to punish them. Whilst I wanted a happy ending for her, there is no doubting that the enjoyment in this whole series has been her take on the world and being a serial killer.
Thorn In My Side was another hand in mouth read where you were just waiting for the chills to come. I love seeing a softer side to Rhiannon as well as her sense of justice. I’ve got to admit to having mixed feelings with how this one ends. I wasn’t expecting any happy endings but it was a bit abrupt and left me with lots of questions. Other than that though it was another great read with one of my favourite serial killers.
I adore that female serial killer only, because sometimes you can feel with her - for all the good reasons, though. Come on, now - I am not a sicko, now !
Anyways - this book left me hanging with another HUGE cliffhanger, so I know, there will be a next book in this series. It has to !!!!
“Serial killers are either killing, thinking about killing or planning to kill. They never, ever stop.”
WHAT ON EARTH DID I JUST READ?! This was about the most bonkers book I have ever come across. It was insane yet highly entertaining. I kind of hated the first chapter but after that it almost turned into a guilty pleasure. Once I gave into the craziness of it all, I was compelled to read it despite it’s somewhat trashy and psychotic material lol 😂
Before I get into the review I should note that I picked this up randomly from the library not realising it was the fourth in a series about the Sweet Pea Killer series. The book may or may not read differently depending on whether you have read the previous books but I, personally, am reading this as a standalone. However, having enjoyed it so much I may go back to the start 😝
Okay into the book…
The book begins with a quote from Anne Bronte so that was very promising indeed…’He who dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose.’ A rather grounding start I thought…However, as I turned the page, everything took a 180 turn….
Can you ever keep a good serial killer down? The SweetPea killer believes she has finally turned over a new leaf, after all, it’s been over 800 days since she’s murdered anyone…
One thing that was EXCEPTIONAL in this book was the characterisation. All the characters felt so real and even if I didn’t like all of them, it was crystal clear who they were and their purpose in the book. Rhiannon, the main female character, is a diagnosed sociopath narcissist and begins to list the symptoms off one by one to her victim: “Grandiose sense of self-importance; Disregard for the law; Lack of empathy; Moody or hostile and/or aggressive; Callous treatment of others…” the list goes on. I believe this character alone made the book what it was. The story was told from her POV, for better or worse, it certainly made for a very unique and unhinged book. I can safely say I have never read anything like it before 😂
I also love how at the start of every chapter she lists various things that get on her nerves; some of them are so hilariously true! I feel you sister 🤭 one of my favourite examples was ‘woman I saw scrolling Tinder as she drove her son to school this morning. Almost threw my frappe through her window. I didn’t because growth.’ 😂🤭🙂↔️
Now for some of my favourite quotes:
“I’m happy in this new skin”… “But that’s all it is, isn’t it? Ophelia” - a skin.’
‘We’ll both come crashing to a hard, hard floor. It is going to happen. It’s just a question of when.’
“It’s just the way I am. Spin the wheel of fortune and see what version of me you’re getting today - comedian, gardener, porn star, mass murder…”
By the end we are met with a somewhat softer version of once was a powerhouse serial killer…’killing wasn’t what I lived for. The only thing I could think of was getting to the UK and saving my baby.’ - not so cold hearted after all and I have to say it was a nice surprise, and a surprise it definitely was!
I don’t want to spoil what was actually a pretty in-depth and interesting plot but WHAT A CLIFFHANGER?! I was still getting over the ‘Reckless’ cliffhanger…was NOT ready for that 😅
The book we've all been eagerly awaiting is upon us, and after much anticipation, I was able to slide back into the mind of my absolute favourite serial killer.
Despite trying to live a 'normal' life, Rhiannon, or should I say Ophelia, still struggles daily with many unhinged thoughts about people... mostly about killing them! As per the other books in this series, each chapter begins with The List, which is pretty self-explanatory - it's the people she wants to kill.
I think what makes this series so enjoyable is I like many others, can scarily relate to our main protagonist... people aren't they just so annoying. Like, I literally could write a list too.... I just couldn't carry it out! Ha ha!!
I know so many people who are looking forward to this one, and I hope they enjoy this 4th instalment of Sweetpea just as much as I did.
Rhiannon returns. As caustic as ever, it’s hard not to warm to her even when you know what she’s done. It’s been over 800 days since she last killed. In her new guise as Ophelia she seems to have found happiness with Rafael but it seems unlikely that things will last. Though she is, to all intents and purposes, dead, she remains in contact with her sister. She receives occasional news about her daughter, but with her new family Rhiannon has found people who care for her. Even when she’s describing the things she does there’s a dark humour to the character. We get some increasingly bizarre situations…some of which prove to be of more significance than they first seem. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this prior to publication.
This book was a little bit slow at the start, Rhiannon has a 800+ day streak of no killing!
It really picked up tho and that ending. Jesus Christ.
I’ve timed reading this book so it’s close to when the last one comes out in a couple weeks and when I tell you I’m going to be heartbroken when this series has finished I’m not exaggerating.
It’s rare to find a book series where every book is just as good as the last but that’s exactly what iv found with the Sweet Pea series!
In book 4 we find Rhiannon happy, settled and she has stop killing, doesn’t need to kill, doesn’t want to kill, but that is until her sister in-laws partner turns abusive!
I am really enjoying this series iv been listening to all these books on audio and the narrator Georgia Maguire is quite frankly killing it!
This was so good! It’s been a while since I read the first three books and I’d forgotten how unreal this series is. Rhiannon is hilarious, so many parts had me laughing out loud, I couldn’t put it down. The last 50 or so pages had me in a PANIC, I could cry now I’ve got to wait for the fifth book.
Talk about a cliff hanger!! I freaking love Rhiannon, and this one is my favorite so far. Her one liners, thought process and insults are the absolute best. I am beyond ecstatic that she found Raf and he is one of the best book boyfriends EVER! Ugh, I love him. So much fun and I don't know how I am going to wait for book #5 when this one literally just came out.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!!
I enjoyed this. It's a bit slower than the previous installments! I enjoyed the relationship between Rhiannon and Raf and how this develops throughout the book. The ending was a bit of a shock and actually quite emotional. Looking forward to seeing how things tie up in the next one!
I had read the first two books in this series (purchased, not ARCs) and loved them, so I was delighted to receive an ARC of book 3.
It's an interesting series and has understandably been successful. Rhiannon is an intriguing character, and the books are written with sharp wit, seething anger and a nod to the real pychological impact of trauma. All the blood and gore are an extra bonus.
Righteous female serial killer is a trope that has hit a nerve with the reading public. I say fair enough: for years publishers' listings -- not to mentions news reports -- have been stuffed to the point of nausea with stories about men doing unspeakable things to women. It's hard to resist the satisfaction of seeing men getting a dose of their own poison.
While I can see that there is character development (Rhiannon in love - who'd have thunk, eh?), and I liked the aspects about her struggling to adapt to normal family life, this one didn't really hit the spot for me. While she returns to form in the latter part of the book, there was really too much romance.
I look forward to more books in the series, but I hope they'll be more like book 1 than book 3. If I wanted romance, I'd read romance (and I don't).
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. All my reviews are 100% honest and unbiased, regardless of how I acquire the book.
