Timewalker: A Step Beyond

Rate this book
Could she make the world a better place by stepping back in time and removing a murderous tyrant who snuffed out thousands of innocent lives? Perhaps the bigger question is how does tinkering with the past affect the present?

Over his thirty-seven-year reign, King Henry VIII executed an estimated 25,000 people, from former lovers and political advisors to Catholics protesting the Dissolution of the Monasteries. But one such victim, a master timewalker familiar with our modern historical accounts, has a plan. Why not eliminate one of the most prolific serial killers in English history, save himself from a horrible demise, and possibly make the future a better place in the process?

Enter an unsuspecting Phoebe. She needs to rid herself of the ghosts continually cluttering up her viewfinder in hopes of better managing the sudden, inexplicable jolts into the past she experiences on an almost weekly basis. As a woman seeking normalcy for the sake of her marriage and her life, she sets off to Oxford to meet a retired professor who may be the only living expert sharing her timewalking affliction. But the professor fails to show at the designated cafe and while waiting, Phoebe is pitched into the skin of one Tudor gentleman and accosted by another. That’s her first clue that things are about to go terribly wrong, terribly fast.

Only when Phoebe finally connects with a fellow modern timewalker does she realize the chilling repercussions of being earmarked by the treasonous timemaster Lord Robert Sutcliffe. Yet, when she’s hijacked into the skin of Sutcliffe’s co-conspirator, astrologer and soothsayer Sir George Alden, only then does she discover the complex plot these two men have devised to alter the past by prematurely ending the reign of King Henry VIII.

That Phoebe is to have a starring role in the Tudor king’s assassination is one problem; that the real George Alden is occupying her body and frolicking with her husband in the twenty-first century is quite another. If that wasn’t bad enough, if she refuses to play along, Sutcliffe will ensure that she never returns home, and that her husband and friends will meet a brutal end. But if Phoebe does enact the plan to remove King Henry, would she even return to the same world she had left, or would everything and everyone be irrevocably changed?

With time running out and the present hanging in the balance, Phoebe and her allies must convince Sir George to stop the time-tinkering madness at the expense of incurring Sutcliffe's wrath, but are any of them willing to pay the ultimate price?

Fast, witty, and fun, this ride across the centuries, fans of historical fantasy and time travel will find this adventure exhilarating.

Another door opens

Phoebe McCain's career with the Agency of the Ancient Lost and Found (AALF) has come to an end due to her involuntary timewalking and she now must learn to harness her new skills as quickly as possible or become a partner in a murder that would rock world history. This book is a radical departure from the prior Phoebe AALF and Crime by Design series but if you are open to the concept of time travel and are willing to stretch your imagination, you will be in an incredible literary ride.

Dizzy combination of fantasy and history

I am a big fan of this author's works. This book was engaging but leaned too heavily on the concepts and rules of time travel, taking precedence over character development and plot. I liked the Renaissance world, could have used more.

I liked but didn’t love. The editing needs work in the ebook format (Preaches instead of Peaches, and plenty more).
