Multi-millionaire casino owner Ryan McKay needs a bride in a hurry, and the one he chose has just backed out, which means he could lose his company within hours. He doesn’t know the meaning of the word failure, so he’s scrambling for Plan B and not happy that the ridiculous terms of his grandfather’s will have backed him into a corner.

So when his shy but dedicated executive assistant Faith Lewis tells him she’ll do everything in her power to make sure he succeeds, she’s shocked to realize Plan B = involves her—in other words, he wants to marry her. Like right now.

Faith reluctantly agrees, burying the heavy crush she’s had on Ryan for years. But the shy virgin is going to have to live with, sleep with, and reveal so many secrets to the enigmatic man who sees this as a logical business deal. Faith’s been holding out for love, and that four letter word isn’t in Ryan’s vocabulary after being raised by a cold, loveless family.

But love very rarely follows the rules of business or logic, and this business deal is about to get very personal.

If Ms. Burton ever decides to switch genres, moving from writing her current erotica/romantica books to writing Harlequin Presents books, Nothing Personal is testament to her ability to do it.

This book really reads like a HP novel: (1) hero (coldhearted, multimillionaire boss) marries heroine (his shy, virgin assistant) to fulfill the terms of his grandfather's crazy will and save his business; (2) heroine gets a makeover and "blossoms" under hero's influence; (3) hero's iciness thaws under heroine's gentle care; (4) (un)expected Big Misunderstanding throws them apart; (5) Conflict is solved; (6) true love vows are exchanged, smooch fest begins... and they live happily ever after.

What can I say? It was formulaic and predictable, but I kind of liked it. Ryan's reaction to Faith's "blossoming" was (unintentionally?) funny - he seemed to like the word "wow" a lot - and he could be charming when he put his mind to it. Faith was too naïve to ring true and I came to the conclusion that she did need to wear glasses all the time - and not only for reading - due to the way she used to see herself in the mirror before Ryan "revamped" her.

Overall, this wasn't a bad read. I'd have enjoyed it better if Faith's innocence wasn't so annoying, though.

Really more like 3.25 stars. I'm guessing "Nothing Personal" is one of Jaci Burton's earlier novels. The story is one I would have expected to read in a series romance like Harlequin or Silhouette instead of one published by Samhain. If you're looking for erotica, don't go here. The sex is hot, but the only thing erotic about it is the language used to describe it. Not that I didn't enjoy this book, it was just not at all what I was expecting.

Ryan needs to marry and procreate to keep the company his grandfather willed him. He was raised in an unfeeling environment and considers this marriage just another business deal. When his latest fiance back out he decides to try with the one woman who hasn't yet let him down, his assistant.

Faith has loved Ryan since the day she met him while interviewing for her job. There's nothing she won't do for him (silly twit). When he asks her to marry him, she quickly realizes this is just another business deal for him, but it will likely leave her heart in tatters.

If you need more on the plot, just pick up any serial romance about the assistant (secretary) who doesn't think she's pretty (but turns into a knockout) and how she tames her unfeeling boss who can't resist her gentle passion.

This was a pretty good, though slighty predictable read about a marriage of convenience. The hero, Ryan, needs to get married in order to fulfill the terms of his grandfather's will and maintain control of his hotel empire. When his intended bride bails on him at the eleventh hour, in desperation he asks his loyal administrative assistant to help him out.

Faith would do anything for Ryan, since she's had a crush on him since she first came to work for him five years ago. Even marry him to help him save his company even though she knows that he could never love someone like her. Faith is plain, naive, virginal, and has low self esteem. Brought up by a bitter mother who lectures her not to ever expect anything from men except heartache, Faith has no illusions about Ryan's feelings for her. All she has to do is stay married to Ryan for a year and hopefully produce an heir. Then they can go their separate ways and Ryan's company will be saved. But can Faith be with Ryan without losing her heart to him?

Ryan is cool and calm and doesn't let anyone get close to him. Some bad experiences growing up with parents who weren't there for him and an unfeeling grandfather cause him to keep a tight rein on his emotions. He never wants to open his heart to anyone. Opening his heart would mean risking rejection, and he vows never to go through that again. But somehow he feels a connection and a growing attraction to Faith. Will he finally allow someone in past the walls he's set up around his cold heart?

I was a little surprised that this book was not as erotic as the typical Jaci Burton read. It was about as hot as a regular contemporary romance, but that was okay because it worked. I thought that Ryan came off as a little cold at first and I didn't like how he treated Faith, but once his background was explained, I could see where he was coming from. Faith was one of those virgin heroines that start out as naive, and then after they are 'initiated', all of a sudden become sex kittens. But I liked her, and I was glad to see she got a backbone toward the end of the story. There was also a little twist at the end that almost fooled me and nearly derailed the HEA. This was a pretty quick, easy read, and not a bad way to pass a couple of hours.

Nothing Personal is a standalone, contemporary romance novel written by author Jaci Burton. It features a simple, short story that has been told before. A wealthy career-focused man needs a fertile bride in order to fulfill contingencies in his grandfather's will related to the family business. His assistant who has always worshiped him from afar (and will do anything for him) is spontaneously propositioned to marry him, in name only of course. She gets a makeover for "public eye" purposes. Groom's jaw drops. Baby-making ensues.

This 200 page (give or take) book gets straight to the point. There's not a lot of building up to the main plot...which isn't always a bad thing. I mean sometimes it's nice to read a short and sweet, open and close story in the span of a few hours. The length made it easy to take this romance at face value, knowing it's pure brain candy. However, it should be noted that there is some climactic drama that had my defensive emotions surfacing on behalf of our sweet heroine. Overall though, I liked this book and my complaints were minimal. If you enjoy this author, or just enjoy a cut-to-the-chase contemporary romance, you just might like it too!

My favorite quote:
Didn't she know these guys were hitting on her? On her, his wife. The woman who was taken. Unavailable. Married. To him. Ok, so they were married in name only, but the guys sniffing around her didn't know that. And he didn't like them ogling her. In fact, he was down right pissed off about it. Maybe he'd send out a memo. He cringed at his wandering thoughts. He could see it now: "Memo to all male members of executive staff. Stop looking at my wife. She's mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine." Yeah, that would be professional, not to mention mature.

I think the cover was wrong on this one because it reads just like a Harlequin Presents.

We have:

- Marriage of convenience based on a will to keep an inheritance

- Hero who doesn't know what love is because his grandfather taught him not to value emotions

- Virginal heroine who has no self-esteem due to a mom who put her down so she hides behind lose fitting clothes, big glasses and ties her hair into a bun. She has secretly been in love with the hero so she agrees to the marriage.

- Of course, feelings grow between the two as they live together despite the hero's vow not to care about anyone. The heroine is so sweet I may have a toothache.

- Other random parts: the hero had nether parts (I thought only women had those in Romancelandia) and the heroine had a monobrow before her makeover (it was termed that she now had two brows instead of one 0_o)

So if you want a Harlequin style book, this certainly fits the bill. The writing was decent and pulled you into the characters. I just had to take off some points for unbelievability due to the leads' emotional issues and a heroine who sounded like she had never looked in a mirror and needed to find her self-esteem and move into this century. The story did have it's good parts and I liked it in the end.

Timid Faith Lewis has spent the last few years harboring a crush for her boss Ryan McKay. Now Ryan must marry in order to maintain control over the company and his bride has just walked out on him.

Ryan had no intention of marrying now he has to come up with a bride and baby within a year. Now that his latest attempt has fled as if the hounds of hell was chasing her down, he is desperate to find a new bride before midnight. Looking at his secretary Faith, he begins to form a new idea, although she is plain and wears clothes that fit horribly, her loyalty is unquestionable. Proposing a marriage where a child will be concieved, Ryan offers her something that no one else has ever done, a chance to have someone love her unconditionally, for if she has a baby, the baby will be hers and he will walk away.

I thought this was a wonderful read, of course I am a real sucker when it comes to Ugly Duckling stories. Faith is wonderful, she has some history that allows her to believe she is unworthy of love from another. Ryan harbors his own hangups when it comes to relationships that leave him believing it is better to be alone.

I'm a huge sucker for the marriage of convenience trope so I knew I had to read this one. I think this book had a lot of the perfect ingredients for what could've been a very interesting story if it had been fleshed out more. Everything happened so fast and a lot of the moments between the MC's felt very surface level. I'm also not a huge fan of the ugly duckling to swan transformation, especially if instigated by a man, I think it's just plain rude to women.

Nothing Personal was a short, quick to read book. I really enjoyed this book, which has the theme of many of the older Harlequin Romance and Harlequin Presents books that I read when I was in high school. In this book, the plot of the inexperienced employee entering into a marriage of convenience with her boss was updated and given a little more heat, although I thought it was exceptionally tame to be a book by Samhain Publishing. The hero and heroine were both very likeable characters, and I enjoyed reading as their romance developed.

With five hours left before Ryan McKay violates the terms of his grandfather's will and loses the family company to his incompetent cousin, loyal employee Faith Lewis agrees to become his wife. Faith has had a crush on Ryan for all of the five years she has worked for him, and she willingly steps in when his intended bride flees. According to the terms of the will, she will be required to live with Ryan as his wife for a year, sharing a bedroom and conceiving a child, which she will take full responsibility for when the marriage is dissolved. Ryan, who hasn't ever experienced love in any form and has no desire to be a parent, will terminate his parental rights and see that she and the child are well compensated for financially. After their hasty marriage, Ryan is angered when he hears a group of his employees gossiping about his marriage and talking disparagingly about Faith's looks and style of dress. Ryan steps in and sees that Faith has a wardrobe and hairstyle makeover, which gives her confidence that she has never before felt. As Faith was growing up, her mother drilled her with the constant reminder that she was plain and would never be able to hold the love of an appealing man. Instilled with this lack of confidence, Faith has never trusted a man, and she is determined not to fall any harder for Ryan. Before the marriage, she insists upon Ryan's agreement in waiting two months before they consumate their marriage. Ryan is attracted to his new bride, and he is confused when showering her with clothes and jewels doesn't result in Faith's physical capitulation as he desires. As Ryan and Faith get to know one another their relationship finally progresses to physical intimacy, and they truly start to enjoy each other's company. When it looks as if they may have found a connection that neither of them expected, and both are hoping that the other wants a lasting marriage, an incident occurs that shatters their happiness. Their trust in one another will be severely tested, and both will have to decide if the love they feel is worth the risk.

This was a simple, enjoyable book. The characters were appealing, and their pleasure in one another's company was refreshing. This book is definitely not erotica, and has less heat than most contemporary romance novels. It is a sweet, short love story that is very quick to read.

Paint-by-number wish fulfillment romance novel. It's quick, pleasant, but completely on formula with nothing that makes it stand out from a million like it. That might sound terrible, but there's a reason that the formula works and there's a huge market for well-executed instances of it. This is certainly that.

A fun quick read. Nothing new, but enjoyable with a good hea. I did find Faith to be pretty unbelievable. It's always weird when a main character not only has no family, but no friends either. Was the author too lazy to give the MCs a life outside of the romance? But she was sweet and Ryan's character made up the difference by having more depth and changing over time.

Nothing Personal by Jaci Burton . It seems I’m on a streak of rich guys in the millions. This one has a peculiar twist in that money is at risk on page one. Ryan’s fiancé backs out on the marriage which was mandated by his grandfather’s terms to be settled in 24 hrs in order to save his company.

Along comes Faith, his personal assistant, who accepts an agreement to marry him, bear him a child, and the marriage will be over in a year. Hmmm! How romantic is that!!! Not only with that as a starter, Ryan takes his dislike of her plain appearance and wardrobe choices to further humiliate her.

A romance does develop over time to become a short love story.

Wanted to read some good old billionaire boss romance cause octobers are for nostalgia 😒💘

“Why now? Why tonight? What changed your mind?”
“You mean about making love?”
He nodded and smiled sheepishly. “I have to admit, I tried everything to get you in bed. Jewelry, a new wardrobe, even the trip to Hawaii. And nothing. So why now?”
“It was the kitten.”

This reminded me of that scene in taylor swift's song ME!'s music video where the guy offers her a ring and she rejects and then he offers a cat and she accepts his proposal 🤣😭🙈💕

Alright, I've read this before, and I really liked it. Or more like, I liked the premise. Ryan, the attractive boss forced to marry his assistant, Faith on short notice to keep his company. He is also supposed to have a child with her to fulfill the agreement. Did I mention that Ryan doesn't believe in love and marriage? Or that Faith is a 26-year-old virgin? I know, its sappy and the ending is easy to figure out even before reading the book. Still it was nice. Faith is kinda infuriating since she has serious self-esteem issues and anxiety attacks when stressed. She's just a little over-the-top.

Go in knowing this is just one of those crappy guilty pleasure reads, but its a nice one.

I thought this book came out in 2014 and I was frankly horrified and I double checked, and I think maybe that's when the audio came out but the original book was written in 2008 and I guess back then, 15 whole years ago, it was okey dokey to write romances featuring heroes who were blatantly trying to buy their wives into having sex with them. The whole premise of the book is bizarre but also, this might be my toxic reading trait - where I enjoy listening to super problematic books on audio. There's the marriage of convenience between hotel magnate Ryan and his executive assistant, the virginal and innocent Faith; he needs to marry in order to fulfill the terms of his grandfather's will and also get his wife pregnant and stay married to her for a whole year, live in the same house, sleep in the same bedroom. And how, you may ask, is this all being enforced? Oh, his lawyer and his cousin (who hates him and stands to inherit it all if Ryan can't fulfill the terms of the will) are also moving in to make sure there's no hanky panky....or rather, that there IS some hanky panky. I would have rated it 1 star but it was weirdly entertaining and I ended up going on 2 very long walks because I couldn't stop listening to it. So, credit for that.

CW: Gendered essentialism, references to toxic family life in the past, FMC has a lot of self-esteem issues, not like the other girls, subtle slut shaming implying Faith is somehow better because of her lack of sexual experience;

OOOH, La-La, I Absolutely LOVED IT!!

Two lonely people, who noticed each other, and never acted upon it, until fate steps in.

Ryan needed a wife, on the quick of a dime, and he knew "old reliable," (Faith) would bail his behind out. However, he never knew his "plain Jane," assistant would strike up the match to kindle his desire for her.

Faith is unlike any woman Ryan has ever laid in bed with. She's never been with a man before, and is willing to give Ryan one of the most precious and special gifts a woman could bestow upon a man, her virginity. Only if he waits three months to receive it. Since Ryan prefers his women seasoned, the allure of being Faith's first becomes extreme intriguing to him. And intensifies the endless sparks of fire, in the realm of passion he feels for her. With no signs of ever dissipating, even when he does enter her hidden treasure.

Ryan thought he knew all he needed to know about getting a woman in bed, lavish jewelry, luxurious trips to exotic places, & etc., well he was DEAD WRONG!! Like any woman, Faith enjoyed the gifts she received from Ryan, however, they were impersonal and didn't quite come from the heart. In the long run, it was she who seduced him, with her naivety and inexperience. Having him to discover his true feelings and experiencing things he never knew existed between a man and woman, LOVE.

I can understand why certain people believe this novel is a typical Cinderella Story, yet it's extremely exciting to discover the dynamics between these diverse individuals. Faith isn't poor, she's exceptionally content and financial stable with the life she's lead until marrying Ryan. And Ryan is exceedingly reserve regarding his feelings for anyone, he would absolutely prefer to be impersonal with everyone he comes into contact with. Yet he is tremendously honorable.

Faith had been infatuated with Ryan since the day he interviewed her for her job, and he had been fascinated with Faith even before her transformation, yet to catch a glimpse of his beautiful duckling in her wedding dress. It is then, at that precise moment, their adventure begins.

I utterly believe I'm going to be obsessed with the other novels written by Ms. Burton. She's going to become one of my favorite new authors. I highly relished the way she wrote these characters, they were relatively easy to understand, the reasons for their solitude. And their trials and tribulations were true to real life, and nothing seemed to be off base. Instead of other writers, who leave the reader wondering, what in God's name were they trying to describe. Not the case with Ms. Burton, well done. This novel DESERVES WELL BEYOND A 10 STAR RATING!!

I’ve had my eye out for this author for quite some time, and I was looking forward to trying out one of her novels. So, when Nothing Personal landed on my Overdrive app, I quickly downloaded the audiobook and dived into this story.

In Nothing Personal, we meet the CEO of a hotel franchise who is about to lose his position if he doesn’t comply with the terms of his grandfather’s will. Ryan McKay is being forced to marry and have a child within one year, in order to maintain power of his business. After a final attempt to satisfy terms falls flat, Ryan turns to his dedicated assistant Faith Lewis for help.

In a spur of the moment decision, Faith decides to help Ryan out. She’s had a crush on him for the five years she’s worked for Ryan and there seems to be nothing she wouldn’t do to come to his aid. However, marrying him and entering into this business only contract, which Ryan hopes to dissolve after meeting the terms of the agreement, turns out to be something personal… for both.

Overall, the story had a light, easy going premise that I seem to enjoy with short, quick hit audiobooks. However, I never really connected with the main characters and many of their moments felt awkward and contrived. There was absolutely nothing complicated about the novel, so I chalk it up to being half baked and hastily delivered.

I’m still curious about some of the other novels Jaci Burton has authored, so I won’t let Nothing Personal deter me from giving her a second chance. This novel simply fell a bit short, but not entirely disappointing.

I'm sorry but this book is terrible. i couldn't even feel the characters' emotion. i only got how he was amazed at how different she was compared to other women and how she is sexy underneath all that ugly clothes she previously wore. he hated the time he had to spend with her in hawaii and used it up to keep drinking. everything was an attempt to bed her. how is this love?
then i can feel a bit of his joy after they started having sex. even though the author worded it as making love, i couldn't feel the love at all. it was all 'oh she looked so beautiful. so sexy. that amazing body' sure enough the author did put in words how cold and unfeeling ryan should be and how he wouldn't fall in love with her. jaci managed to portray the unfeeling part of ryan well, bit the love part was just horrible.
then it suddenly jumped to ryan declaring he loves her. and she went out to leave him because of a simple plan set up by james and erica. she didnt even ask for conformation. she didn't care if he lost his company. and she claims she loves him. really?
overall. it was terrible. the make out scenes were brief, the romance was not really there. it wasn't a well written book. not a book i would recommend anyone to read.

2.5 'Just Okay' Stars

Audiobook Version
Elizabeth Hart, Narrator: E. Hart does a pretty good job, I detected a slight lisp at times, though, and that combined with the babyish voice she used to portray mousy heroine Faith Lewis and several times I was pulled out of the story. She did a much better job with mega rich, bad boy Ryan McKay.

In truth, I put off writing this review and needed to reread the book description and critiques in order to write this. The book was short and sweet, if pretty predictable. This is the second book I've read this month where our Hero falls head over heels in "like" for the cherubic--nearly to the point of being dense--heroine. And he does so waaay too easily. This leaves only a four-letter obstacle to overcome. There's also the greedy, scheming cousin James. In both instances, our damaged Hero clings to his beloved denial. In the former, his inability to see how creepitastic his cousin really is and in the latter how obvious it is that he adores Faith. Still, no matter how hard he clings to his skewed beliefs, it takes a major calamity to shake things up. We know there can be only one outcome, so, it's only a matter of patiently flipping pages and enduring some very corny speeches and love scenes.

Very cliché, very Cinderella, very simple, not developed enough.
It was sugary, not bad per se, but nothing stood up after finishing.
This specific cover is also wrong, since it doesn't translate what the content really is about.
