Don’t worry, Copper. For the record, I approve. The two of you are gonna be perfect together. You need each other. She’ll keep your inner bad boy under control, and you’ll bring out the wild girl inside her that’s dying to come out and play. - Natalie Taylor
I found Copper quite hard to review, it uses a lot of the stereotypes associated with the romance sub-genre it fits into. The Metal Cowboys are former military men using the skills the military taught them to help, they have the requisite tech monkey, medic, leader, sniper. It feels a bit lite a short form version of the Black Knights Inc series (first book Hell On Wheels), but that might have been the first of the genre I read. Using the metals as monikers is quite clever, Copper's name partially comes from his appearance but it might be more than that.
Alright to the book itself. I liked the story it was predictable but I like predictable when I'm on the train. The predictable plot was also a good way to introduce the cast of characters mostly the Taylor sisters and the Metal Cowboys (though the next female lead, Lexi, is introduced) and the world, the mansion/ workshop is spectacular. Marla is to me quite a well-written character; she was an abused woman and is gunshy among men, her subservient streak comes from her abuse which she never dealt with. Her relationship with her sister was one of the highlights of the book. Copper is a military man, he's has a serious protective streak and that makes him do some seriously stupid stuff but it comes from a good place. Look I love military men, it takes a lot for me to fault them, we all know the deal going in.
Popularity of this book with readers could be dependant upon what people are after there are a lot of stereotypes and predictabilities but for readers new to the genre it is a good place to start, quick and easy. For those that have been reading the genre longer, it depends what you are looking for. I found it more than satisfying despite it feeling quite short and having a few floors but if I was to read it at a different time I might dislike it. Mercury is book two, Mercury is their sniper, his soul is heavy hence the moniker. Snipers and damaged souls are my romance genre weakness.
