A political assassination draws an investigative reporter into a far-reaching conspiracy in a riveting thriller by Chad Zunker, Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Wife You Know and Family Money.

A blindingly fast-paced tale of ripped-from-the-headlines intrigue, layers of conspiracy, and government scandals, In His Wake was truly impossible to put down. Winding all three of those into an onion-like plot, I was utterly hooked on this political thriller from beginning to end. You see, despite the fact that this subgenre isn’t really one that I read very often, the fact that there wasn’t a single moment to catch my breath or let my mind settle was enough for me to fall for this standalone story head over heels. After all, not only was it an adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster ride of assassins, secrets, and lies but it was the perfect mix of John Patterson and John Grisham. With layers of dirty scheming and plenty of action-packed scenes, it brought the two together with absolute *chef’s kiss* perfection.
All said and done, from the explosive opening chapter until the soul-satisfying conclusion, my eyes raced through the pages to the extent that I had to stop myself from skimming. I mean, I don’t know how anyone could have taken longer than one sitting to speed through this short, wild ride. Coming in under 250 pages, I was stunned into silence that the length didn’t affect the quality at all. With well-developed characters, a complete backstory, and even a tiny bit of romance, not much was missing from this nail-biting story of family drama and dark secrets. But it was easily the propulsive feel to the plot that won me over completely. After all, I quite literally didn’t get up from my seat until I flipped the very last page. Smart, crisp, and fun, it was a white-knuckle ride that I couldn’t put down. Rating of 5 stars.

Thank you Chad Zunker and Thomas & Mercer for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
This book was bad. Yes there was a plot, characters, etc. Yes it was all more or less coherent. Yes it was a normal length and its chapters were of normal lengths. But those are only the bones of what makes a good book and frankly this book had not much more.
My underlying coplaint about this book is its writing style. So much telling and almost no showing! There is a broken-up couple in this book and the only reason we know how they feel about each other is because the narrator tells us and not at all because of their actions or words. In fact, it's like that with the relationship between any two characters in the book. Imagine sitting down with someone and them describing to you the character dynamic in a book; that's what it felt like to READ the book. Really really bad.
It also made me not care about the characters at all. Their dialogue did me no favors, either. None of them had distinct personalities, and all of them would just say things that it felt like they should say in their circumstances. Just a really poor reading experience.
But beyond the bad reading experience, I also just didn't enjoy the plot. This story is about a political assassination... kind of. It's really about the personal dynamics of an FBI agent, his brother (a journalist), their father, and the journalist's ex-girlfriend. Their younger brother also comes in the picture briefly. There's also the assassin himself. But what starts out as this urgent need to get to the bottom of the assassination develops very quickly into this interpersonal story with intermittent reminders of "and there's also the assassination to think about!" and "he couldn't go to D.C. now, half the country was still worried about the assassination," just in passing. The central plot point was shoved to the side and in its wake there was nothing substantial.
Just a bad book all around. I would not recommend it to anybody.
I got this book as a Kindle First Reads pick for January 2026.
the setup… Four months ago, Austin lawyer Jerry Dawson died in a boating accident. His sons all have mixed emotions about the man who abandoned them years ago. Dean is an investigative reporter for an online news outlet who refused to attend his funeral; oldest son Eric is an FBI Special Agent who had a decent relationship with the man, and youngest son Ben is in law school and still angry with Dean. But when Dean is contacted by his ex-girlfriend April North who works at his father’s old law firm, she gives him reason to believe their father may still be alive and in grave danger. Then a US senator and presidential candidate is assassinated and Dean believes there’s a connection between that, his father’s disappearance and the law firm.
the heart of the story… It soon becomes clear to Dean that April may be in danger and soon he falls in the same leaky boat. He’s got serious investigative skills and she’s got inside intel that makes them great partners. However, the threats are real and they had to go on the run. I love gnarly conspiracies and this was a good one, forcing me to pay attention to all the threads and intrigue.
the narration… Austin Rising did a great job with the storytelling and keeping the tension high. He also managed voice distinctions really well.
the bottom line… As the bad guys and body counts rose, so did the excitement and suspense. I loved that it was unpredictable and kept me enthralled. Zunker has now emerged as one of my auto read authors and I’m all in for what’s next.
Wowza, talk about a high-octane thriller! This story jumps right into the action and doesn't let up until the frenetic conclusion. Hold onto your hats, folks—the pace is relentless. Three brothers—Dean, Eric, and Ben—are pulled into a conspiracy involving the assassination of a presidential candidate. Their father recently died in a boating accident—or did he?—and now it seems he was involved in a dangerous and deadly arrangement.
Although plot-driven, the characters are well-fleshed out for such a quick read. Throw in a potential second-chance romance, strained family relationships, and a fight for survival and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a five-star stunner. IN HIS WAKE is a timely, realistic adrenaline rush that begs to be read in one sitting. Chad Zunker is determined to leave readers breathless on pins and needles. Trust me, once you start, you won’t be able to stop. Grab this one if you like fast-paced thrillers with political flair and a Jack Ryan vibe! ____
Thank you Chad Zunker and Amazon Publishing for my gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
I got this from Amazon First Reads. The book description sounded interesting and that it would be a good, suspenseful read. I was disappointed. It was a quick read as it was only 200ish pages. But it was far fetched and not believable. I wouldn’t recommend.
Looked promising at the beginning. Then, the story developed into the stereotype of common men/women converted into superman/wonder woman against a plot steered by bad men with millions of dollars to get it through. Admitting this was not my preferred type of thriller, the plot was captivating enough to continue reading. Unfortunately the outcome was so absurd that it ruined everything. No further details to avoid spoilers. Terrible.
I wasn't certain I would like this... political assassination isn't one of my go-to themes but it's a new year and I wanted to expand my reading experiences. I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. The book is pretty short and it moves incredibly fast. The narration is good too!
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
4.5 stars. Thumbs up for my 1st reads choice for 2026. Strap in, this is a wild ride. An adrenaline fueled political thriller with non-stop danger, action and suspense. This is my 3rd book by this author, each one gave me just what I was looking for...entertainment. Suspend reality and just go with it for the good time. Adding more CZ books to my want to read list.
In His Wake was an adventure from the very first page. The story moved at a fast pace, pulling me along with its twists and vivid scenes. The writing was crisp and engaging, making it easy to get lost in the journey. It’s one of those books that keeps your heart racing and your curiosity high until the very end.
In His Wake is a political thriller with many twists by Chad Zunker. The 3 Dawson brothers are left in shock when their father dies in a late night boating accident. His body was never found, but the police tell the men that happens quite often. Dean Dawson is a reporter for the local paper in. Austin and is covering a story about the assassination of a presidential candidate who was visiting the city The shot that killed the man was so accurate that everyone assumes it was a hit by a very skilled professional. Dean's brother is with the FBI and is also investigating the case. Dean's former girlfriend reaches out to him with news about the case. April has discovered a text on her boss's phone that implicates him, and the law firm she works for, in the assassination. She also finds out that Dean's father may in fact be alive!
As the brothers are all pulled in different directions around this case, things get heated. Is their father alive? Why would he fake his death and not let them know? Who killed the presidential candidate? Who gave the shooter the information he needed to pull off the shot? As April begins to feel like she's being followed, she is in real danger. Has someone found out about the information she gave Dean? This book is fast paced and thrilling at every turn. I read it in one day and could not put it down! I highly recommend In His Wake and rate it 4 stars. If you love a good page turner, this is the book for you. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advanced copy of In His Wake in exchange for a fair review. #InHisWake
I recently discovered this author, largely due to their last novel being all over my social media feeds, which piqued my interest.

Thank you, Amazon Publishing and NetGalley, for the DRC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Three sons are left grappling with complicated emotions after their estranged father dies in a boating accident. Each brother has taken a very different path, one is an FBI agent, one is a reporter, and the third is in law school, following in their father's footsteps.
When Dean, the reporter, is contacted by his ex-girlfriend April who works at his father's former law firm everything changes. She's seen a message on her boss's phone that appears to implicate the firm in an assassination, pulling Dean and his brothers into something far more dangerous than they expected.
This book was a fantastic cat and mouse thriller. I read it in two days and couldn't put it down because of how suspenseful it was. It delivered a fast paced and gripping political mystery that kept me hooked until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for my audiobook ARC and my honest review.
Good stories don't have to be long stories as author Chad Zunker proves in this short, fast-paced novel. Three brothers, one an FBI agent, one an investigative reporter, and one a law student, are each grieving the death of their father. His boat was found with pills, empty liquor bottles, blood identified as his, and it was assumed his body would one day be found in the lake. Several months later, circumstances cause the brothers to question the possibility that their father could be alive. Could his disappearance be connected to the political intrigue that they find themselves at the center of? An international assassin, the assassination of US senators and of course, a money trail, make for a hard to put down story. An Amazon First Read.
It was super easy to read and moved at a fast pace, making it incredibly entertaining from start to finish. I genuinely enjoyed it and found myself flying through the pages. My only small wish is that the ending had been a bit more dramatic to really seal the impact.
Overall, it was a fun, engaging read that kept me entertained throughout.
I loved reading book because it is full of suspense, twist and turns. Each chapter left me wanting more. This book is binge worthy, as it keeps you engaged. I never heard of this author before, but after reading this, I'm now a fan. Will be looking forward to reading more of this author's book.
I picked In His Wake as one of my January Amazon first reads! This is my first completed book of 2026 and….it did NOT disappoint!! 🤩🤩
The first chapter immediately gets your blood pumping and adrenaline up and get ready because it will not slow down until the last chapter! If you are looking for mystery/high action/family mending/even a rekindled romance all wrapped into one….this is your book!!!
This is the first book I have read by Chad Zunker but it will NOT be the last!!!
3.5 stars rounded down. It was a quick read, and the second half of the book definitely captured me with twists and turns. The writing style was kind of elementary, which I guess is fine and what made it such a quick read.
I may check out some other books from this author, because he does come highly rated and recommended.
Another Zunker book that did not disappoint. The multilayered plot and continued suspense throughout the story had me zooming through this novel. Political intrigue mixed with a love interest made the story relatable and full of action.
I really enjoyed how fast paced and easy to read this was, but I think it lacked any “surprise” luster. I think this is a movie or a show I could really get into, but this is more of an action packed book than a thriller. Looking to read more by Chad Zunker!
