Leah Joanne has many passions, but two of them have now become a necessary part of her life; writing and traveling. Fiction has always been Leah’s coping mechanism of choice when life tastes sour. Traveling has opened her mind and heart. She combines those two passions to create a world for readers to escape to when they need to jump into a new life for an hour or two. Leah loves to entertain her readers while sneaking in powerful messages about complex human emotions. She writes with all heart and no fluff. Leah Joanne is currently working on the next installment of the “Onyx” series, a world of characters that readers are already addicted to. She takes her craft seriously, traveling with intention to the locations where her books take place, but sometimes she binges one of her favorite character dramas (as an excuse for more research and inspiration of course). You can’t get more messy and complex than Gilmore Girls after all.

Waves the Color of Onyx takes you on an emotional journey, throwing wave after wave of pain and raw emotion at you throughout the entire book.

We follow Valetta, a deeply scarred woman trying to survive the pain the best way she can. Her only support system consists of two people: Mark and Mel, her best friends. They push her to reconnect with the world, encouraging her to start living instead of merely surviving.

The writing is beautiful and descriptive, but it doesn't veer into overly poetic territory, making it accessible to a wide range of readers. It easily captures your attention and heart, pulling you into the story and making you feel invested in the characters' lives almost immediately. While the story starts a bit slow as the author sets the scene, it picks up once the characters are introduced and we gain a clearer understanding of Valetta's life and character. From there, we’re swept into a whirlwind of twists and turns.

This book tackles several heavy themes, such as being abandoned by a parent, alcoholism, mental health, and trauma. It also explores friendship, love, and personal growth, and the way the relationships evolve felt realistic. The characters truly come to life, making them feel like real people.

The only aspect I found a bit confusing was Owen. At times, it was hard to figure out if we were supposed to love or hate him at first. His portrayal made his intentions feel a bit too clear, which diminished the impact of some major revelations later in the story. I found Valetta's relationships with Mark, Mel, and even her father more interesting than her dynamic with Owen. That said, I’m hopeful that the next book will shed more light on his character, backstory and intentions.

Overall, this is a beautifully written debut novel that I read in one sitting. I would absolutely recommend it if the blurb or my review sounds intriguing to you or if you are in need of an emotional read.

A great book! My favorite part was when Valletta first gets a good nights sleep and reveals “all it took…” “I’ll have to remember those things for next time” That paragraph was great. Loved Leah’s style of writing.

This was an engaging and easy read that I couldn’t put down. Twenty-three-year-old Valletta has two loyal best friends and two complicated, messy parents. She believes she has a handle on her life—working as a waitress after college—while secretly relying on sleeping pills to quiet her thoughts. But just as a new person enters her life, her past resurfaces, forcing her to confront everything she thought she had under control.

I felt truly invested in the characters and had no idea where the story was headed, which kept me hooked until the very end.

Reading this book, in February, in England was just cruel.
The setting of San Diego, with the sunshine and the sea, just jumps off the page.

Valetta is 23 years old, and she is a closed book. She has scars that she won't allow anyone to see.
She trusts no one other than Mel and Mark, her two best friends who love her and are fiercely loyal. Honestly, the relationship between these three characters is fantastic.

When Valetta's past suddenly arrives on her doorstep, she has no choice but to deal with some of her deeply buried issues.

When Owen entered Valetta's life, I began to feel uncomfortable. There's something weird going on here and before long, with the way he appears to take control of Valetta and her life, I am screaming at Mel and Mark to do something.

This book tackles some important issues such as parental neglect, addiction, and mental health, but because the story is told from Valetta's POV, it didn't feel tacked on or preachy.

This was such an emotional read, and although there are some heavy subjects tackled within, it's also a romance with plenty of drama and suspense.

Leah Joanne is an author who i shall be watching with interest.

I love books that take you on an emotional journey, and this book definitely did that for me! I connected with Valletta right away; I felt everything she was feeling throughout the whole book. I particularly loved the complicated intensity of her relationships with each of her parents, and Owen’s character also hooked me right away. This book was a fast paced roller coaster ride, yet tender and deep at the same time. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

This novel really took me by surprise! I love how fast paced it was, truly never a dull moment, I did not want to put the book down! I found myself trying to predict what was going to happen next, and was constantly amazed with the twists and turns it took. I was very invested to say the least! Can’t wait for book #2!

The way I drank this book up so quickly! I got so into the characters and the story. I found myself coming up with theories of Owen’s backstory and motives, and editing those in my mind several times throughout the book. I can’t wait to see where Valetta’s journey takes her next.

Beautifully written ...exactly the style I enjoy
Descriptive so you totally blend into the story, surroundings and immediately gel with the characters ....but not too heavily worded so you get lost
Perfect balance for me ...an immersive novel that takes you on a journey

Enjoyable read!

I really enjoyed the first person narrative, getting to view the world through Valletta's lens and her interactions with others. The author's grasp of human experience really comes alive through the characters she has brought to life on these pages. Can't wait to read more!

I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for fantastic indie novels. There’s so much more to them that I can’t place with more traditionally published fiction. But I digress.

This was a novel that made me feel seen in a deeper way that I expected. As a person who also suffers from emotional and mental scars, the draw for me at first was definitely the fact Valletta had to medicate to sleep essentially EVERY TIME, and that was her oblivion. And even then, sometimes that doesn’t even work. That hit hard in a deeper way.

She is, in every essence of the word, drowning. From the cover to the back cover, this book is blue. Lonely, confused, slipping in an ocean tide that’s so easy for any mentally unwell person to slip under. Her family is estranged (girl I FELT THAT), she’s deep in substance abuse (such a deep topic I’m glad someone touched on — traumatized people try to ease their pain and often end up having trouble with substances of any kind), and no one around her is there enough to see her mind is her own warzone. Can you guys say relatable? Because I sure can. Her inability and fear of opening up; the push and pull between the love triangle; all of it builds in waves that crash over who Valletta wants to be, who Valletta could be if she found herself.

In a lot of these situations; I actually end up rooting for the FMC to be not “alone” or “single”; but to find herself. Find what she wants. Love herself and try to figure out who she is before moving forward in any way. Owen was an interesting, but anxiety inducing character at times. I do tend to like the more “brooding, unhinged” men in these scenarios; but I do hope there’s more to HIM in the next book. Seeing how his mind and motivations work a bit more might make him seem more healthy for Valletta. Honestly, I truly just want my girl to be happy. 🥹🥰

This was a compelling read from the start; and I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants a cathartic emotional release, a whirlpool of emotions, and a character who’s so relatable and complex that it sometimes hurts.

“Waves the Color of Onyx” is raw, messy, emotional, and completely unflinching. Just like Valletta Skye herself.

This book took me on an emotional ride I wasn’t fully prepared for—and I mean that in the best way.

Valletta is one of the most complex, flawed, and real characters I’ve read in a while. She’s sharp-tongued and guarded, numbing herself with pills and sarcasm, yet there’s this undeniable softness underneath that makes you want to root for her, even when she’s pushing people away. Watching her unravel, resist healing, and then inch her way toward vulnerability felt so human.

And then there’s Owen—brooding, patient, kind. He’s not the "fix her" type, thank goodness. He’s just there, in a steady, grounding way that makes you believe someone could really see your worst parts and stay anyway. Their chemistry simmers from the moment they meet, but it’s the emotional intimacy that really got me.

What I loved:
✔️ A deeply flawed, snarky FMC you can’t help but love
✔️ Slow-burn emotional romance
✔️ Honest exploration of trauma and mental health
✔️ Realistic, sometimes brutal, but ultimately hopeful

At times, the pacing slowed a little in the middle, and I wished for more insight into Owen’s internal world—but honestly, that’s a small thing in a story that felt this intimate and raw.

If you love emotionally heavy romance, with a protagonist you want to simultaneously hug and shake, Waves the Color of Onyx delivers. Beautifully messy and deeply human.

TW: Mental health struggles, prescription drug misuse, anxiety/panic attacks, family estrangement.

This book delves deep into the struggles of Owen and Valletta, two characters who are each battling their own personal demons tied to family issues. Valletta's journey of learning to set boundaries with her family really resonated with me. The author does a brilliant job of showing how family can be both toxic and loving at the same time, which is such a complex but real aspect of life. It also explores how our parents' demons can sometimes become our own. We may not choose our parents, but we do get to choose whether we let their burdens shape us.

The flashbacks were an incredible storytelling tool. They really helped me connect with the characters on a deeper level and understand their struggles more intimately. As for Valletta and Owen's relationship, some might see it as toxic, but I found it to be a powerful reminder of how important it is to heal and address your own issues before fully being able to love someone else. It's such a relatable and honest message, sometimes we all need to fix ourselves first before we can be the best for someone else.

I also loved how this book highlights the importance of friendship. No matter where you come from or how different you might be, true friends like Melanie and Mark will always have your back. That sense of loyalty and support really stuck with me.

I genuinely enjoyed every page of this book. It's sweet, easy to read, and totally engaging. And let’s talk about that ending, I need more! A sequel is a must!

Wow. What an experience! What a story!
My first new to me Indie Author, Leah Joanne, really knows how to tell a story and make you feel real raw emotions through her characters and send you on a roller coaster of thrilling suspense!

Valletta in her early 20s has a very simple life. She has her best friends, she works at a restaurant with them and loves a nice latte sitting outside of her favorite shop.

You learn a lot about Valetta and her trauma that she carries into her adulthood that started when she was just a child. You can’t help but feel for her as her only way to cope is to numb her mind with sleeping pills.

When things take a 360 after meeting her boyfriend, Owen, her relationship with her best friend, Mark, goes south.
The most intense love triangle I’ve ever read lol
Rolling through the motions of friends being over protective and her wanting to be left alone.
The red flags were there, but do we ever stay away from them? 😬
The suspense and turns of events really had me shook!
I really enjoyed this book! It was engaging the whole time and to be honest didn’t think it was going to be on the list of one of my favorite books this year! I enjoyed this book that much!

I finished it in just two sittings because I was completely engrossed. Let’s just say this story won’t be leaving my mind anytime soon.

The book follows Valletta, a 23-year-old girl navigating a lot in her life. I love how well Leah portrayed her character and struggles. Told from Valletta’s POV, the story felt incredibly personal. She was deeply relatable to me, and I loved being inside her head.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was its emphasis on friendship. Mark and Mel always had Valletta’s back, ready to do anything for her. Their friend group felt like a true found family, and honestly, I wish I had a circle like that. I also appreciated how the author resolved Valletta’s relationship with her father—it was beautifully written.

Things started to change in Valletta’s life when Owen suddenly appeared and began taking care of her. But as the story unfolded, it became clear that everything he did had a purpose. I had a feeling something was off about him from the start.
Also, I loved the dinner scene where Valletta made Indian curry to impress Owen with her cooking skills.

The book delves into heavy themes like mental health, trauma, parental neglect, and alcoholism. I felt everything Valletta was going through—I could relate to her deeply and saw parts of myself in her.

I can’t wait to read Mark and Valletta’s story next!

This was such an emotional yet enjoyable read. Leah’s writing is stunning, and for a debut novel, it was beautifully crafted. She's officially on my " 𝑰𝒇 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕, 𝑰'𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒕 "

Highly recommend it to everyone!!

I really enjoyed reading this book. So readable and pulls you in right away.
I was so gripped that I couldn't put it down. The characters felt so real to me that I still feel invested in their journeys. Leah Joanne has done a great job of pulling us into the life of Valetta and her friends old and new, and all the complications that come with it.
It made me laugh, made me cry, and I can't wait for the next book in the series! Valetta is so relatable as a person and it was cathartic to see her grow by the end of the book.

I don’t know how to properly sum up this book. It was so captivating I found myself carving out more and more time to read over the course of the last 24 hours and ignoring my normal time I like to go to bed. Don’t miss this one!

Valletta has so many things she needs to move past, but sometimes the only way to move past is by dealing with what is in the past. The trick is finding the person or people that will walk beside you through the process. Owen might seem like he is the right one to do just that. Yet, he doesn’t know her as well as Mark and Mel do. So who should she trust? This book will lead you on a journey that you won’t be able to walk away from. A great debut book by this indie author!

I blew through this book! I really appreciated the depth of Valetta’s healing journey and felt so much of her struggle. She had me feeling deeply frustrated for most of the book but I loved to see her grow through her emotional journey. Mark was such a sweetheart and also why I was so frustrated at Valetta for not seeing the wonderful man already in front of her!! And Owen. Oh I’ve dealt with men like that, no thank you, I caught his devious undertones from the start. Overall, really enjoyed this novel and am especially impressed at the quality as a debut novel.

The story literally blew me away, I felt everything they felt while reading this book so many raw emotions and feelings.

The Book Follows Valetta, she’s a waitress who works with her best friends at a restaurant. Reading more about this character you start to notice all the trauma from her child hood spilled over into her adulthood. Hence why she’s taking sleeping pills.. 😵‍💫

Now The Romance that sparks between Owen and Valetta is absolutely electrifying. Although the love that’s brewing between these two does put Valletta’s Friendship with her best friend Mark in jeopardy..

If you’re a lover of Love triangles you’re in for a real treat.

The sudden shift of events literally had me Gasping for air.. It was an epic read for me, I was Soo deep in I couldn’t put it down. One of the best books I read this year so far. 🙌🏻

Book Review: Waves the Color of Onyx
Author: Leah Joanne
Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Suspense
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨(4.25/5)

“Valletta Skye's emotional journey towards self-acceptance and soul-wrenching struggle to repair broken relationships with her parents are stirring rollercoaster rides that will sink deep into your bones and leave you longing for Valletta's next chapter in the upcoming sequel.”

I didn’t expect this book to captivate me from the very first page. The powerful imagery of drowning beautifully parallels Valetta's struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and her estranged family. The visualization and metaphors surrounding water serve as a poignant symbol of Valetta’s deep emotional scars, making her journey both relatable and heart-wrenching.

Favorite Quote(s):
“My dad always called me Blue Sky. He said I was his clear blue sky after a hurricane.”

“This friendship is my compass, my true north. I mean, it’s you and me against the world, right?”

“Five years of me sticking by your side, being there for every disaster, every win, every complaint. It’s you and me. It’s always been you and me, from day one, when I literally fell for you.”

“I’ve never seen his eyes like that before, filled with truth and desperation. And then it hits me . . . no one has ever looked at me the way he did. I will the water to drown it all out, but I can’t wash away his emerald eyes as I repeat in desperation – It would never work.”

“I’m done.” I cry out softly this time. I squeeze my eyes shut, letting go of him. Letting go of his hold. As I slowly open my eyes, it's as if I reached the surface. I can take my first breath on my own. Filling my lungs with oxygen. And then it happens. My mind clears, my heart calms, and my breath is steady and strong. The ocean calms. Instead of dark overpowering waves crashing into me, I’m floating. Floating on calm waves the color of emerald.”

Waves the Color of Onyx hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting. From the first chapter, I felt like I wasn’t just reading Valletta’s story—I was being pulled into it. Leah Joanne writes with this quiet intensity that sneaks up on you, and before you know it, you’re fully invested in a character who’s trying her best to hold herself together while the weight of her past keeps tugging at her.

Valletta is messy, guarded, loyal, exhausted, hopeful, and hurting all at once—and that’s exactly what makes her feel real. Her insomnia, her dependence on sleeping pills, the complicated history with her parents, and the way she clings to the people who make her feel safe… it all paints a picture of someone who’s been surviving for a long time and is finally being forced to confront the things she’s buried.

The friendships in this book are one of its biggest strengths. Mark and Mel feel like the kind of people you want in your corner—steady, protective, and imperfect in the best ways. And then there’s Owen, who brings this mix of tension and vulnerability that keeps you guessing. You’re never quite sure if he’s going to be the calm or the storm, and that uncertainty adds so much depth to the story.

What I appreciated most is how naturally the heavy themes unfold. Trauma, abandonment, addiction, mental health—none of it feels forced or sensationalized. Leah lets the emotional weight settle in slowly, and because of that, the moments that hit… really hit.

By the time I finished, I wasn’t just rooting for Valletta—I cared about her. I wanted her to find peace, to find herself, to find whatever “healing” looks like for someone who’s been carrying so much for so long.

This is a powerful, beautifully written debut, and I’m already looking forward to where the Onyx series goes next.

Waves the Color of Onyx is a debut novel from author Leah Joanne. Firstly I would like to say everyone needs some besties like Mark and Mel, their relationships with Valletta were "friends goals" level of good. When you can't rely on your family you need friends who can support you and Mark and Mel do this admirably. Valletta's mother and father are mostly absent from her life now, but their impact on her was devastating and this is explained through flashback sequences throughout.

The question of whether Owen would ultimately be helpful or harmful to Valletta had me guessing as there are moments of both. Who among us with abandonment issues hasn't glossed over some red flags at one time or another, because the green flags are so good?

There are some very hard, emotional topics in the book so check your triggers but it was sensitively handled in my opinion and central to Valletta's story. Grab some tissues and get comfy before you start reading, you'll need it!

This debut novel follows Valletta’s journey of finding the courage to confront her traumas and step out of their shadow. It does a fantastic job depicting the lasting impact of parental neglect on mental health and relationships. The way it explores how past trauma shapes connection felt raw and deeply realistic, and I really appreciated that. Plus, the friendship and banter between Melanie, Mark, and Valletta? Absolute gold! ❤️

Now, can we talk about 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 walking red flag? Because boy, did I have the urge to throw you-know-who off the ship way sooner (even if there seems to be more to him 😑). But honestly, if a book can make me this emotionally invested, it’s definitely doing something right! And Valetta's character development? Wonderfully written.

If anything, I wish the story had slowed down just a bit to let certain moments sink in—especially because I loved the characters so much! Mel and Mark truly stole my heart, and I would have loved to see even more of their backstory (or maybe even their perspectives 👀). Sequel soon, perhaps? 👀 Because I definitely need to know what happens next!

If you haven't already, do give this book a try! ❤

I was skeptical to read this because it doesn’t sound like something that I typically get into, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The characters were dynamic and interesting, and the story had a lot to digest that kept me coming back to read more. Some parts were cool and calm, while other times it became intense and I had fun with the faster pace. Some of it is mysterious, making me feel like there’s something to figure out, and I really liked that aspect.

The book was set up for a book two, which I will happily read.

To give this the most honest review, I do have to mention that there were some editing mistakes. But it wasn’t too much for me to not enjoy the book (believe me, editing is sometimes the number one thing I’m picky about). So I’d say, don’t think about those little picky things and just enjoy the story!

This book was even better than I expected. It was that type of book I started and couldn’t put down. I fell in love with the characters, especially Valletta. Despite her brokenness and her flaws, you can’t help but fall in love with her and root for her. If you’ve ever felt broken, which let’s be honest we probably are all a little bit, you’ll relate to her on so many levels.

The book takes you on an emotional roller coaster and you feel like you know the characters so well that you can’t help but become happy, sad, frustrated, disappointed, surprised, and so many other emotions as the plot unfolds. This book truly had me feeling so much, I really loved how much it moved me.

If you want a story of scars, love, friendship, healing, and forgiveness, this one is for you. I cannot WAIT for book 2! This will be one I wish I could reread the first time. It is one of my favorite books of the year now.

I love that Valletta’s character is so relatable. She deals with many complex emotions and you feel like you’re on the emotional rollercoaster with her and processing things as she processes them. It was interesting learning about her character as she opens up more throughout the book. Owen’s character and motives are very enigmatic throughout the progression of the story but I’m hoping that the sequel will reveal more about him and the events in his childhood that made him the way he is. The second half of the book went in a completely unexpected direction but in a good way. Definitely a fast read, and it’s rare to find a book with clean content and that keeps you so engaged you can’t not read the next chapter.

Great debut novel from a promising new author! This book was fun to read, engaging, and I always looked forward to digging back into it. I love to read novels, but have not been able to read much the last few years. This book was perfect to get me back into enjoying reading again. The scenes were easy to imagine and put yourself in and there were many enjoyable moments of writing where I, as the reader was effortlessly placed into the scene. I think the author did a good job of keeping you looped in to the story wondering how things will all tie in to each other. I expect great things from Leah Joanne.

If you’re looking for a story that lets you forget about real life for a while and sweeps you away, this is it! I’ve never been to any of the places described in this book, yet somehow I feel as though I’ve traveled the world through its pages.

Valetta’s journey completely drew me in, and I’m impatiently waiting for the next book in this series. I know I’ll be rereading it, and I’ve already recommended it to many people who visit my workplace looking for a great read. And trust me—it’s not just good, it’s fantastic. The author should be super proud of this great novel.

📖 Valetta Skye has a life - 2 best friends and a job as a waitress. However, she has plenty of scars from her past that she's still working through. Her father, who was her best friend, left her when she was young. Her mom was no better. Now, she gets through life with the help of a therapist and sleeping pills.

She meets Owen at a support group. He's able to help pull her out of her shell. He is also someone she finds relatable because they have similarities in their history. He should understand her better than her friends, Mark and Melanie. But things are not always as they first appear.

✨ Tropes
• grumpy x sunshine
• found family
• emotional healing
• mental health representation
• addiction recovery

💭 This is not a genre that I would normally read. Overall, I did enjoy it and want to see what happens next in Valletta's very complicated life.

⚠️ Trigger & Content Warnings

I'd suggest this for ages 16+. There is nothing inappropriate as far as language or spice, but it does deal with mature topics.

What an emotional ride I just went on! I don’t know anything about this author, but I felt real emotion in these pages as if she was pulling from her own experiences. Not that I think she experienced the events she wrote about, but that whatever she HAS experienced helped create these characters and craft this story. I binged this because I truly just needed to know what happened and why. BUT….she left so many things unanswered so obviously I need to read the second book! I recommend this if you want an emotional journey that keeps you turning the page
