A World or Two Over

Rate this book
IN THE LAND OF PORTALCRAFT, EVERY STEP IS DANGEROUS. AND THE MASTER MAP IS POWER.

Willow Erifson’s best friend jumped off a cliff one day and dared her to follow. Trying to save him, she did…only to end up a world or two over.

A world where the residents joke, “Where did the time go? Down a portal again?”

Because this entire land is littered with portals, mostly unmapped and unseen.

Trust does not exist here. Not since one race killed off another. Since the master mapmaker vanished with the greatest map ever made. And since the people split between two opposing sources of power: reason and chaos.

Willow doesn’t understand. No one back home on her island believed life existed beyond their borders—except her shadowy friend. Who simply showed up one day, his memory lost.

From the start, everyone else hated Zephyr’s presence: commanding, brilliant, and proud.

But Willow—wild and carefree, hiding her strange powers from a powerless community—adored him. Until the day he led her into this physical and political hellscape.

Now if Willow takes one wrong step before she finds Zephyr—to wring his lying soul for answers—she may never see home again.

Unlike any fantasy I’ve ever read before, this book is mind blowing, a fast page turner and an absolutely fantastic adventure!

A winged shadow daddy? Found family? Complex, unique and fresh magic system? A badass FMC who slowly comes into her own and discovers her strength? IM EATING IT UP.

The first book in a new fantasy series, the story follows a young girl named Willow with strange powers and her best friend, an even stranger orphan boy that helps her learn to control her magic. As the story unfolds we are met with an entire world of complex class systems, rich history, and a land covered with portals that might just drop you on your head if you don’t know where to step.

I found the world building and magic system to be so well done for something as complex as it is. I was definitely confused in the beginning but I think that confusion mirrors that of our main character trying to understand who she is, and where she comes from. As Willow learns and comes to understand her past, all the connections start to click for the reader as well, leaving a big “a-ha!” at the ending followed by a “wait that’s it?!?!” — and then we cry because we have to wait for book two 😂

The romance in this was light, but honestly that’s something I appreciate in romantasy. I love a FANTASY book with romantic bits rather than a romance book with magic aspects. There is a slow burn with no spice but setting up for strong enemies to loves in book 2! The author has confirmed book two will be 🌶️🤭

Overall I just adored this. 5⭐️. Pulled me out of my reading slump. Was such a page turner and encapsulating read. Thank you a million times to Golmah for this ARC. I’m honored to have been able to read and review such a fantastic story. This review is unbiased and 100% my own words and opinion.

Wow this was so good! It made me feel like I did when reading ACOTAR for the first time… everything felt so new, refreshing with romance but still a strong fantasy plot.

The dialogues were perfection and the banter was BANTERING! Zeph OMG I wish I could bottle this MMC up and keep him with me at all times 🤣 their friendship reminded me of the “it’s us against the world” dynamic like Alina and Mal from Shadow and Bone! I also love how the world is filled with portals both visible and unseen, and that at any moment you can accidentally step on one…

What you can expect:
🖤Banter filled dialogues
🖤Sword & Sorcery
🖤Touch Her and 💀
🖤Fated Mates
🖤Portal Fantasy
🖤Morally Grey Characters
🖤Friends To Lovers

Hell yes. Was I confused for 50% of this book? yes. Did I guess a major twist? yes. Was it still one of the best reads in a long time? yes.

Excellent book by a very talented new author! It is a portal fantasy where the whole land is covered in portals. It is very sweet and has a slow burn romance that takes many twists and turns. There is a "fated mates" element in this book which is unique, as the couple is fated to find each other across the dangerous land or suffer physical pain. The male lead is witty, commanding, hot, and very mysterious. I loved trying to figure him out along with the strong-willed female lead. I had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this book and the author has shared that the romance will get a bit more spicy in the subsequent books- so I am looking forward to those! This is a great book for romantic fantasy fans and those looking to explore the romantasy genre.

I must start off by saying this is pretty brilliant. The creation and world building is like nothing I've read before. It is in no way boring and had me thinking about it even when I wasn't reading it. I couldn't wait to get a chance to read more and see where the story was going to go. It is in no way predictable. The time this must have taken to create. I'm utterly impressed. The story is so unique and I couldn't get enough. The writing is beautiful and flows perfectly. This is a thought provoking and complex read (in a great and breathtaking way). The Imagery and storytelling is just fantastic. Finally a fantasy book written for an adult and its own amazing terminology. The twists were great and that ending! I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next book! I literally can't praise this book enough. It is now my number one read. Such a talented writer!

Thank you so much to Golmah and Booksprout for the eARC. I am now your biggest fan and can't wait for any and all future books!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

a world or two over by golmah zarinkhou is my new personality, and i'm not even mad about it. like, forget the fact that i was supposed to sleep—this book decided that was optional.

first of all, the world-building? insane. i was 100% ready to move there until the author reminded me every other page that this place is terrifying. but also, the portals? the drama? the chaos? sign me up. (well, maybe not. but i’d watch someone else do it from a safe distance.)

willow is such a relatable mess. she’s like, “what’s going on?” and i’m like, “same, girl.” but then she goes full main character energy, and you’re just sitting there like, “am i low-key inspired by a fictional character right now?” yes. yes, i am.

and don’t even get me started on zephyr. mysterious, charming, possibly trying to give me trust issues??? idk, but i’m obsessed. the slow-burn tension was chef’s kiss. i was rooting for them while also screaming, “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER.”

also, the magic system? so unique. i can’t even explain it without spoilers, but it’s not your basic, “oh, look, i can do a spell” kind of deal. it’s all connected and intricate, and i’d need a graph to keep up, but it’s worth it.

overall, this book has everything: action, humor, betrayal, portals (because obviously), and characters i would defend with my life. it’s like jumping off a cliff and realizing halfway down that this is the best decision you’ve ever made. 5/5 stars. absolutely no notes. golmah zarinkhou, you’re a genius.

A World Or Two Over is a must-read for romantic fantasy readers!

It follows Willow, a young woman with telekinetic powers that she's been hiding from her community--a community who believes nothing exists beyond their borders. Everything changes when Willow meets Zephyr. Zephyr, who seems to come out of nowhere. Zephyr who believes in Willow's powers. Zephyr, who convinces Willow to follow him off a cliff, only for Willow to end up in another world, in a land filled with portals and magic. Now, Willow is on a quest to find her way home, to learn the origins of her powers, and to find Zephyr.

I adored this book! It is a great take on portal magic, with multiple worlds and different types of magic. The world building is vast and detailed, and I was smitten with the childhood friends to who-the-hell-can-say romance between Willow and the ever infuriating and elusive Zephyr. However, I think the romance doesn't overpower the plot at all, making this a perfect read for readers who don't like romance focused fantasy. Plus, there's plenty of other relationships that give life to this story. Among them, my favorite was the mother/son found family dynamic between Willow and Benny, a homeless child she meets on her quest.

Very much looking forward to the next book. There is a lot of great action in the final chapters, leading to a big plot twist. I can't even begin to imagine what's going to happen next!

Things to expect in this book:
🩷 childhood friends to... and forbidden love
⚔️ a deadly competition for power
✨ portal fantasy and other abilities, including telekinesis
🪽 winged hotties
🩶 a morally gray MMC
🫂 found family

Thank you to the author for gifting me an e-ARC to review. Opinions are my own.

WOW! What did I just read? And I mean this in the best way possible. This book is another wonderful gem in the Romantasy sphere, and I need everyone to read it!

A World or Two over follows Willow, who has secret telekinetic powers that she’s been hiding from her community. Her mysterious friend Zephyr is the only one who believes in her powers. One day he decides to jump off a cliff and dares Willow to do the same—only that when they do, they end up far beyond the reaches of their island, beyond which its people are convinced nothing exists. They end up in another world. A world filled with portals and magic…

The plot took such a surprising twist once Willow wakes up from the jump that I still laugh about the gasp I gasped when I read it. It was so clever! What I love about this book is the great care that went into the worldbuilding and the uniqueness of it. And obviously, the characters, and therefore their relationships. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes (yes, I know. Shocking.) and despite Zephyr’s elusiveness, I couldn’t help but love him, so I’m indeed hoping for a happy ending between the two. And of course, how could I not love the found family aspect? Willow and Benny were adorable!

I know the debate on whether Romantasy means just Fantasy Romance or if it also includes Romantic Fantasy is still going strong. In my opinion, it’s both. So A World or Two Over is indeed a Romantasy, but it falls under the Romantic Fantasy fraction—meaning that the romance is strong, but it doesn’t overpower the plot, which makes it perfect for readers who love romance but also a solid plot that doesn’t revolve around it!

Here are some tropes!
🩷 childhood friends to lovers
❤️‍🔥 forbidden love
⚔️ fated bonds
✨ portal fantasy
🪽 winged hotties
🌚 a morally grey characters
🫂 found family

Tropes:
✨Childhood friends
✨Secret magic
✨Winged, Wisecracking and Broody MMC
✨Found Family
✨Deadly Competition
✨Pickpocket child sidekick
✨Fated bonds
✨Slow Burn

Such an incredibly unique and captivating debut in the portal fantasy subgenre. The story follows Willow, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she follows her best friend Zephyr—an orphan adopted by a prominent family who has long suffered from bullying and abuse—into a realm where portals abound.

From the very first pages, I was drawn to the sweet friendship between Willow and Zephyr—a connection that feels both genuine and filled with banter. Their witty, playful exchanges infused the story with energy and humor, making every interaction shine. The first part of the book was my favorite - getting to know these two was incredibly charming despite the horrible treatment from the other townsfolk. The friends part soon after as the mystery deepens, but along the way, she befriends a resourceful child pickpocket named Benny. Thereby adding another incredible character to the roster. This truly had wonderful character work and I adored them.

The mystery is incredible. I simply couldn’t put the book down; I was desperate to uncover the mysteries and secrets lurking behind this unpredictable new world. Zarinkhou creates an incredibly detailed universe with ancient conflicts and dangerous beasts. The portals scattered throughout the land lend the setting an air of unpredictable danger and wonder, and the challenges Willow faces in her quest to find Zephyr are both inventive and incredibly fun.

There were occasional pacing issues and I desired more diverse cultural vibes, but these did not detract from the overall experience. A World or Two Over is an impressively well-written portal fantasy that offers both escapism and emotional depth. Great characters, amazing world-building, and enchanting story. I can’t wait to see where the journey leads next.

Thanks so much to Booksirens and the author for the complimentary copy and the opportunity to review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

Absolutely loved this romantasy book! It was full of romance, action, mysteries, and magic.

The prose is lush and poetic. But also exciting and fast-paced. There were a ton of revelations towards the end that I didn't see coming. The main character is Willow, a girl who doesn't really understand why she has powers in a world without any. Until she finds herself in the Land of Portalcraft, and suddenly, entire communities exist based around specific powers-- like melting into shadow or throwing fire.

I haven't read anything like this before. Usually, portal fantasies have one portal that someone falls into to start the story, but this book features a land that's defined by them--some visible and some invisible...basically, a nightmare for travel. But Willow has to travel across the whole place to find home. So it's an amazing ride. And the friends to lovers trope is shining in this one, even if everything is not as it seems...

This is a very richly written, unique fantasy with vivid locations connected by plentiful portals. Alongside our FMC, we are dropped into the middle of a world with opaque magic and social systems, but rapidly the political landscape begins to take shape and the page turning reveals don't stop coming. As far as romance goes, I would say it is light (the vibe I got on that front was similar to Howl's Moving Castle or maybe The Night Circus in that there doesn't seem to be a lot of time when we see our FMC and MMC together) and I found other relationships to be more compelling overall. At the end there were still some unanswered questions, so I'm hoping there will be a sequel!

A fascinating and unique world that draws you in from the first page! A World or Two Over is the perfect blend of magic, romance, fantasy, action, and intrigue, set in a world where portals are everywhere.

The strong-willed female protagonist is everything I love in a heroine - smart, fearless, and undeniably resilient. Unraveling her identity and past, while also navigating the challenges of this world is so much fun. Don’t get me started on the male lead… wow! He‘s enigmatic, witty, and commanding. There‘s something about him that pulls you in. There’s no surprise then that the slow burn romance between these two characters is utterly magnetic.

And let’s talk about the twist and turns! The revelations make you want to immediately flip back to the first chapter and re-read everything in a new light. You can tell the book was outlined from start to finish. The author nails the pacing, building tension and mystery until the very last page, where you’re left gasping and wanting more.

Sooooooo good! I could hardly put the book down! I’m just getting into the romance/fantasy genre and I’m so glad I discovered this author and book. It was a perfect balance of action, mystery, fantasy, and romance that made it impossible to put down. I’m probably going to go back and reread it again today. I love how every chapter begins with a little epilogue that gives you clues to what’s going to happen next. I can’t wait for future books from this author!

A riveting debut novel that makes you instantly curious about the main characters and eagerly await each new adventure and revelation. The story transports you to another world (or two) with its magic, whimsy, banter, the depth of the connection that Willow and Zeph share, and — perhaps the most important element — the heartbreaking secrets. The sequel cannot come fast enough.

INSTANT favourite.

One of the most original books I’ve ever read.

So well thought out and developed. Excellent characters with complexities and depth. Unique world.

The unpredictable ending had me thinking about it for days after I’ve finished. So much so I’ve gone back and re-read sections and chapters.

Oh my gosh I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did! The reviews I read kind of made it sound light hearted and fun, and it IS fun but there’s also plenty of drama, trials, and heart break. But the world building- I just can’t. It was top tier. The title hooked me first since it’s so different than a lot of fantasy these days, and I liked the cover a lot. Then I read the synopsis and was like “yes”. Since it was an arc I was getting for free, I checked the reviews there was to make sure it wasn’t a waste of time, and it looked promising! The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the friends-to-lovers, as I prefer enemies, but since the friend isn’t a nice, boring, boy next door type- it totally worked. I loved him, I loved her, I loved the magic system and portal world, and all the twists and turns kept me sucked in until the very end. Very much recommend it!! Can’t wait for book two!

A stunning masterpiece so filled with energy and spiking heart rates.
I was so honored for Golmah to select me to be one of her ARC readers — the story still lingers today holding so much meaning.
The FMC, willow was instantly relatable and I found so much of myself within her, following her on her own quests easily felt like my own life. And the relationships she builds through her own trust in humanity was beautiful and so real.
I loved that this story was fantasy but not so far off from our own world — relating so much to our everyday and the struggles we face as we grow, realizing how quickly time flashes by, but how easily we can be in the moment by just taking a step back and pausing.

Quite the cliffhanger, but maybe not. I look forward to reading this again in its physical form, finding more little Easter eggs and hidden meanings. As well as looking forward to anything else Golmah decides to write.
Her world building is magnificent, so complicated and full of depth, sucking you in and holding tight.

Was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this book by Golman Zarinkhou!

A World Or Two Over is a truly unique fantasy romance that deserves a spot on every reader's shelf!
This enchanting novel follows Willow, a young woman with telekinetic powers she's been forced to keep secret from her isolated and superstitious community—a place where people firmly believe that nothing exists beyond their borders. But everything changes when she meets Zephyr.
Zephyr appears seemingly out of nowhere, an orphan who quickly becomes part of Willow's world, bonding not just with her but also with her mother. Watching their friendship grow from childhood is a beautifully tender experience, filled with heartfelt moments that make you root for them from the start. But just as their bond solidifies, Zephyr challenges Willow to take a literal leap of faith—off a cliff, no less—only for her to land in an entirely new world brimming with portals, magic, and untold dangers.
Now, stranded in this vast and mysterious realm, Willow must come to terms with her past, master her unpredictable abilities, and most importantly, find Zephyr. But navigating a world of multiple dimensions and magic is no easy task, especially when she barely understands the extent of her own powers.
I absolutely adored this book! The take on portal magic felt refreshingly original, offering a beautifully intricate system of interconnected worlds with rich, immersive world-building. The romance between Willow and Zephyr—rooted in childhood friendship and complicated by secrets—is both heart-wrenching and exhilarating. Their dynamic is the perfect blend of longing, uncertainty, and deep emotional connection.
One of the things I appreciated most was the pacing. The story flows effortlessly, never feeling rushed or bogged down. The quiet, emotional moments between characters are given room to breathe, while the action sequences and major revelations hit with perfect impact. The balance between character development, world-building, and plot twists is masterfully handled, keeping the tension and intrigue high from start to finish.
The final chapters are an adrenaline rush, filled with high-stakes action and a completely mental plot twist that left me reeling. I genuinely have no idea what’s in store for book two, but I need to find out!
If you love portal fantasy, slow-burn romance, and magic systems that feel fresh and exciting, A World Or Two Over is an absolute must-read!

Actual rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Not sure how to start this review, because I really enjoyed the last around 30%; there was action and twists and some fantastic moments. But…I had a really tough time getting through the beginning/middle. The world building is complex, so I was super confused (and not in a fun, just go with it way) and frustrated trying to understand what the hell was going on. I see how some of it came together and our characters had to figure it out with us, but that made my reading experience just meh until all of the reveals at the end.

I also struggled with the writing style; the dialogue style had me struuuuuuugling…my brain just had a hard time with it for some reason.

All that to say, the story was super unique and I loved the portal magic and the fascinating way it was implemented! The ending had me gasping and staying up until 2am, so that extra half star is well deserved. After that abrupt ending, we are left with SO many questions still, so I’ll be continuing this series and hoping the story and maybe the writing style continues to grow on me!

I read an ARC of this book, so thank you to Golmah for providing me a review copy!! All of my review/opinions are my own :)

Oh boy. Where do I start?

The author clearly put a lot of love and care into the worldbuilding to create not just disaparate cultures but an entire ecosystem of society, which is nice. The dialog writing is solid and there are some great ideas.

...but maybe a few too many ideas. It seemed like there were a lot of things that could not be explored fully or were handwaved or brushed past. I think there were a few too many twists for one book and only one or two really had the build up to feel like they paid off.

I found it difficult to get attached to any of the characters too much, even taking into account that it's limited third person perspective. I really would have liked to see a little more insight into the character's feelings beyond just what they said. I still don't really know who Willow is as a person, who or what she values outside of her mother and Zeph, or what her goals are besides "survive"-- if that even is her goal. It's just the most likely thing based on what I can extrapolate.

So for me, everything seemed to just go from event to event without much meaning, leaving me feeling kind of nothing about the book. Not good, not bad. It wasn't miserable to read, it just didn't stick with me and make me want to pick it up again. But maybe this style isn't for me.

This book was mind-blowing. Truly. I devoured it in just two days, and even now, I can’t seem to shake its enchanting hold on me. I’d put it down to go about my daily life, yet my mind felt like it had slipped through a portal, continually drawn back to the world and characters within its pages.

Let’s talk about the world-building: its absolutely top-tier. The author has crafted a complex and captivating universe that is both unique and immersive. The realms are rich with detail, each with its own rules, cultures, and intrigues. The use of portals adds an exhilarating (dangerous) layer to the story, allowing characters to traverse between dimensions and experience the vastness of this beautifully imagined world. With each turn of the page, I was left yearning to explore more of these realms, eager to uncover every secret hidden within them.

The magic system is just as unique and riveting as the world itself. The concept of the “tug,” which describes a mystical (fated) bond, is a brilliant addition that elevates the emotional stakes within the narrative. It's fascinating how the author has intertwined magic with character relationships, making every encounter charged with tension and promise. I appreciated having a glossary to reference; however, I found that diving headfirst into the experience alongside the characters was far more rewarding.

Speaking of characters, they are vibrant and compelling, grabbing my heart from the very first page. I found myself deeply invested in their journeys, and I honestly craved more time spent with each of them. (seriously, if we don’t get to see a certain someone again swiftly in book 2 I will riot) Their complexities and growth throughout the story are a testament to the author's skill in creating relatable and dynamic figures. Each character’s unique traits and struggles add layers to the story, making it impossible not to get attached. I laughed with them, cried with them, and cheered for them every step of the way.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I need you to read this book. If you're looking for an enthralling escape, look no further—this is the one. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. I am absolutely dying to get my hands on a physical copy because I can only imagine how satisfying it would be to annotate and tab significant passages. This book is perfect for deep dives and thoughtful reflection, and I know I’ll want to revisit its pages again and again.

So, do yourself a favor: grab a copy of this exceptional debut. This author has without a doubt crafted a gem that deserves to be read and celebrated.

There is so much to love about this book. The concept of a world full of portals is so different and intriguing and there is an incredible amount of unique world building in here. The story kept me guessing throughout and it wasn't the ending I expected (but in a good way). However, there just felt like a few too many ideas in here sometimes, making it difficult to keep straight who was what and allegiances etc. I also didn't think the challenges for seeking the master map added anything and in my head I was like, oh not another book with trials. But this part was shortlived and the ending certainly made up for that.

Okay. This gave me major Alice in wonderland vibes right from the start. We have Willow following her childhood best friend who happens to jump through a portal into a whole other world. And in this world we find magic and secrets and so much whimsical world building. I love love love Zeph.. and the banter between the two. The dialogue is rich and funny. The world building just full of wonder. It is a major slow burn… book 2 will contain spice and I am all here for it. Because these plot twists… holy smokes. It is definitely a Romantasy that will keep you wanting more just like when you first read acotar. Be sure to snag this new release! It just came out recently and I highly recommend. Also. This cover omg.

The worlds and story twists are creative and made for a page turning read I enjoyed, despite that this is not my preferred genre. Some plot twists were easy to predict and others surprised me. I did enjoy it and would like to give it more stars but found the quality of the writing distracting - the author needs a better editor.
