The rebellion needs a miracle. Pax is ready to give them one.
Reunited with his brother and his old crew, Pax finally has a home base, the lost headquarters of the ancient light mages. But it’s a shattered relic, barely functioning after generations of neglect. While he and his crew work to restore its power and uncover its secrets, the rebellion’s leaders make one thing painfully they see Pax as a tool, not a leader. His magic is valuable, but his voice is unwelcome.
That’s a mistake.
Thrust into a deadly game of politics, magic, and survival, Pax pushes the limits of magic in ways no one has dared before. He Tames battle-hardened beasts, unlocks forgotten elements and tackles the mystery of awakening children without the empire’s tightly controlled artifacts.
Just as Pax begins to tip the scales, the empire responds. A massive army marches to crush the rebellion for good. The leadership fractures, torn between saving their people and launching a desperate strike to tear down Brightgate’s unbreakable walls and gut the heart of the empire’s power.
Pax must make a choice. Will he lead them to a bloody victory, or abandon their people to be massacred? Can Pax’s magic shatter Brightgate’s unbreakable walls, or will the empire snuff out the rebellion before it can truly begin?

Imperial Chaos: A LitRPG Academy Adventure By: M. Zaugg Publisher: Independently Published Published Date: October 3, 2025 ASIN: B0DYQDBY1V Page Count: 690 pages Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What Did I Just Walk Into?
Apparently, I walked into book five of Shieldwall Academy, where the rebellion is falling apart, the empire is acting like an overpowered final boss, and Pax is once again being treated like a useful magical wrench instead of an actual person with ideas. Bold move, rebellion leaders. Very bold. Also very stupid.
Pax finally has something that looks like a home base, which would be sweet if it were not an ancient light mage headquarters held together by secrets, neglect, and probably spite. He has his brother back, his old crew nearby, forgotten magic to uncover, children to awaken, beasts to tame, and a rebellion that desperately needs him while also being weirdly committed to not listening to him. Nothing says “we value you” like using someone as a magical battery with legs.
Here’s What Slapped:
This book keeps the series moving with the kind of strategy, magic, and battle chaos that makes LitRPG readers lean forward like goblins guarding snacks. Pax’s growth is still the heart of the story, but what makes him stand out is that his power is not just about becoming stronger for himself. He builds people up. He strengthens the crew. He thinks bigger than “me smash monster, number go up,” which is refreshing in a genre that sometimes worships at the altar of stat inflation.
The rebellion plot adds real tension. The leaders are fractured, the empire is marching in with murder on the agenda, and Brightgate’s walls are sitting there like a smug architectural problem. Pax has to decide whether to lead, fight, risk everything, or watch people get crushed.
No pressure. Just the fate of everyone. Casual Tuesday.
What Could’ve Been Better:
There are a lot of side characters now, and some moments lean a little sentimental. Everyone loves Pax, supports Pax, needs Pax, flushes around Pax, and at some point I did wonder if the rebellion also had a group therapy schedule. Still, I’ll take emotional loyalty over cardboard characters any day.
Perfect for Readers Who Love:
LitRPG progression, academy fantasy, rebellion politics, magical strategy, found family, beast taming, impossible battles, and protagonists who accidentally become the adult in the room while everyone else argues.

New abilities, magical warfare, tragedies and celebrations; in short, life amidst conflict. There are a number of surprises, some cliff-hangers, and even a couple of hints of story development to come. I strongly suggest reading the preceding books in the series, or you'll be hopelessly lost. For those of you who never experienced the "Dungeons and Dragons" type games, a primer on those would do you good.
Intrigue raises its deformed head, as it so often does when (a) there's money to be had, or (b) there are accusations of evil ... regardless of the truth therein. I find most often that greed is the factor behind all of it - power is sought for the money, claims of horrible deeds on the opponents' side are made to obtain the power ... again to get money. It's rare to find a leader who ISN'T in it for the money - those need to be cherished.
Book 5 was greatly entertaining and still it gets better and make me want more!
This is my fave red storyline of any I have read in last 2 years. Hard to put down and many times that I do put it down - I just pick it back up and read more even though it’s getting much later into the night !
Very good characters and even tamed beast have very interesting personalities! The tame monsters have made. Very good protesters and can communicate telepathically to their human care giver.
In all cases of takings a strong bound grows quickly and grows in a magical world where time brings stronger abilities that bring about stronger bonds of friendship and life saving experiences between human and beast l
Very entertaining and thought provoking through out the books !
Imperial Chaos is book number 5 in this series, and sadly, book 6 is 8+ months away, so I can't read that book just yet. However, if you've not read this book yet, then go grab a copy and hop to it. It's a very well done chapter in the series, and while you might think too much time is spent on nonessential things, you'll find out that this is not the case. Very well done, and I'm looking forward to book 6. I'm liking this series.
Pax*s magic and personal skills continue to grow and he and his team play a major part in the Rebellion*s successes. They continue to break the mold and exceed everyone's expectations in such a dramatic way they can no longer be denied. Several plot complications regarding his family and a spy in their inner circle set the stage for the next book in the series. I have to say I've been more intrigued than I thought I would be with this series. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the next book.
I first have to say that I love the recap at the beginning of the book. It is so helpful when reading a long series. I have too much to read to reread a series when a new book comes out. Anyways, this book was really great. I enjoyed the break from academia. We were dealing with full on rebellion here! There still was a lot of character growth and leveling despite of this. I also appreciate the clean language in this book. It is one of the few series in the genre that I feel like I could share with my young children.
This book was an excellent next chapter in Pax's adventure. I had been craving a read that was a bit crunchier and had lots of menus and level ups, and this delivered. If you read books 1-4, then it's a no brainer to read this one (and the author did put a handy recap of book 4 right at the start).
Brilliant! This is an amazing continuation to this well written & incredibly enjoyable series! A great adventure in this nicely created fantasy world, scary moments, high tension, a great read! I do recommend for all that love this genre, start from the first book to get the full reading pleasure!
