The Little Pink Pill

Rate this book
This book has an alternative cover edition

A dark psychological tale from the author of 'Flight of the Cuckoo'.

....The world can be a scary place to navigate when you’re brain damaged.
Even scarier when you aren't entirely sure what you might have done during a blackout while your alternate personality is running around in your body.
My wife calls him ‘The other one’.
If you can’t trust your own eyes or the people around you, sometimes it pays to take a leap of faith. I have, I stopped taking my little pink pill. I wonder what will happen?...

Flynn was on a bus in London that was attacked by a suicide bomber. He lost his fingers in the explosion and gained left frontal lobe damage to his brain, leading to violent mood swings, blackouts, suicidal thoughts, and psychopathic tendencies.

Flynn’s doctor determines that the left frontal lobe syndrome has left him with symptoms similar to schizophrenia, which develop a secondary personality during times of stress.
Flynn and his wife refer to this secondary personality as ‘the other one’.

However, after he is given a little pink pill by his doctor, an anti-psychotic pill normally reserved for schizophrenics, his moods level out to the point that he can function almost normally again, apart from the fact that the pink pill leaves him feeling emotionally numb.

He is relatively content with his new life, after all, thanks to the pink pill, he can’t feel enough to care anyway.
Until he decides to stop taking the pink pill in an effort to feel things again.
He wonders if he can fool everyone around him into thinking that he is still taking the little pink pill, whilst in reality starting to live a double life.

After a chance meeting with another patient during his hospital appointment, he befriends Sid, who also suffers with schizophrenia. The two embark on a sometimes humorous journey of twists and turns in an effort just to stay in what they believe to be a state of equilibrium. The only problem is, neither of them knows if what they perceive is real or not.
Especially when experiments with LSD get thrown into the mix.

Flynn also has a worrying eye on the news, as more and more people seem to be going missing, and he can’t be certain if he, Sid or any of their ‘other’ selves may have played a hand in it.

Please note this novel contains strong language.

Fun, trippy, joy ride into crazy-ville

Our adventure begins with a guy named Flynn, who develops schizophrenia , after some terrorist decides to blow up the bus he and his wife was riding on.
Ever Since that day of the bombing, Flynn has suffered from black outs, and during these blackouts, according to his wife, he becomes angry, out of control and violent towards her. So, in order to keep the other him at bay, And his wife safe, he has to take the pink pill.

Unfortunately, the medication is not without side effects.
Frustrated and tired of feeling lifeless, he decides to quit taking his pink pill. And that's when the real fun begins.
During one of his psychiatry visits, he meets a young kid named sid, who also is schizophrenic. And the two become good friends.
After a few days of not taking the pink pill, Flynn finally begins to feel alive again and happy. Something that he hasn't felt since the day of the bombing.
But unfortunately, the happiness doesn't last long, and women that he has recently met, start turning up dead.

Though this book discusses difficult subject matters, it takes a refreshing humorous approach , And I loved reading about all the trouble Flynn and sid get into together.
If you are wanting something easy and fun to read, this should do the trick. But be forewarned there are a lot of typos and some dropped words. It wasn't enough to cause me to stop reading the book, but I did find myself jarred out of the story a few times because of it.
I would have given this book a 4 star review, but due to all the mistakes that could have been easily corrected with an editor, I deducted a star. I also didn't like having to reread sentences, in order to try and figure out what the author meant to say. I am glad I downloaded the book, even though the cover is rather dull and weird looking. and that I kept reading the book in spite of its many flaws, because I really did enjoy my trip into crazy town with Flynn and Sid.
I think that if the author decides to fix the problems and the odd cover, this story could easily be a four star book. But as it stands now, it's a solid three.
Though I did predict how the book would end, and who really was behind it all, I still loved the journey.
And the little note the author includes about about why she was inspired to write Flynn's story, was touching. And helped bring what I just read, more clearly into focus. I'm glad the author has the ability to see the "funny" in an otherwise dark and trying personal events. And I think it helps to remind us all, that in order to get past the hard times in our lives, sometimes we just need to find the funny too. A laugh really can make a difference. Thanks for the reminder.

At times this was a difficult read dealing with psychosis and its impact on the characters in the story. Thanks to the author's note we know that is due to real experience of the effects of serious brain injury. Despite this backdrop I think the plot and storytelling work and combine to provide a satisfying thriller. The plot carried me along without waning and the descriptive passages really added to the atmosphere, The denouement was a little telegraphed but was entertaining.

Recommended to those who like a different type of thriller.

A different kind of thriller!

Wow, what a read. I couldn't put this book down and was desperate to get to the end in order to see just how the story would conclude. The final twist came totally out of the blue and was so unexpected. I'm pleased I read the author's comments at the end of the book as they put into perspective the thought process that went into the writing of this story. A highly recommended read.

Disturbing, yet enjoyable

Quick read, although I may have nightmares. Challenges how we decipher the difference between perception and reality. Disturbing, yet enjoyable.

Kept me guessing.

Every time I thought I had it figured out, I didn't! The beginning and middle were a bit slow like author was stretching. The end was so fast it seemed like a rapid exhale. Seems vaguely familiar like a tv show I may have seen. Other that this I enjoyed the ride and the confusion.

Wow oh wow

The story is pretty crazy. Especially following someone and their thoughts coming off of "pink pills". I was on the edge of my seat each chapter. I was also surprised by the ending. It was very suspenseful.
You have to read the authors note at the end. It really made my jaw drop.

A tale tinged by the sadness that you know is experience

Although this book seemed a little less packet than The pubs in the jam tart, the authors other book I read,it does pick up around chapter 12 although it is perfectly readable before that. There is humour in this made all the more remarkable considering the authors personal experience , read at the end of this book .

Really enjoyed this book, Kes writes this from a personal experience, with a massive twist. Have also read most of her other books, if you want a laugh try the cuckoo series....

Interesting

This was a pretty good read. Done in a day. I was pretty interested and ended up being surprised at the end. I frequently try to ruin books for myself by guessing the ending and most of the time I got it wrong in this story. Particularly was touched by the author's note at the end. I think I'd probably recommend this book, but not before recommending many others. I probably won't read it again however it was a great way to spend my day.

Flynn and his wife were on a bus in London when the bus was attacked by a suicide bomber. Flynn lost some of his fingers and was diagnosed with brain damage. The medicine he is prescribed, a little pink pill leaves him feeling numb. Flynn starts to experiment with skipping the pill some days to be able to feel again.
The Little Pink Pill is a very interesting book with some twists and turns that you do not see coming. At the end of the book the author talks about her inspiration for writing the book. I am glad I took time to read that part.

I downloaded this a while back and finally got around to reading it. Despite the typo's, dropped words and poor grammar there's the germ of a good story here, but some parts don't work and a rewrite could take this from a 3 star book to a 4. I have to admit that I didn't see the twist coming, it's implausible but works well. I have to admit that I was annoyed (as I always am) by English writers that use the dreadful Americanism 'gotten' which does not exist in English, the word is simply 'got', also for a Yorkshire lass why did the author say 'bills' when in England people call paper money notes? The affair that Linda eludes to at the end of the book was pointless and added nothing to the story apart from slowing the pace down, this should be cut to strengthen the cellar scene. Despite my only giving this book 3 stars I think it's still worth a read.

Holy shit! That was a wild ride!
I honestly don't know how to write a review for this book without giving away anything, so I'll just say this:
This book was extremely interesting from the first page to the last, hitting the throttle hard toward the end. I kind of figured out the big twist toward the middle of the book, but that didn't make it any less shocking. I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book and will definitely keep it on my kindle to reread in the future.
Also, I rated it 4 stars, but I feel it's more like 4.5. The book was great, but there were a lot of grammatical and punctuation errors, which was mildly annoying.

So what is this book about, and why should you read it? The main characters in the story are Flynn, his doting wife who is always there for him, and then there is Sid. Flynn met Sid while at a Doctor’s appointment. You see Flynn was on a bus, that a suicide bomber was on. After the bomb went off, Flynn lost his fingers, and was sent for tests, and they found out then, that he also had left frontal lobe damage to his brain. The bombing really caused Flynn’s life to spiral out of control, and he was put on “The little pink pill” to calm his mood swings, among other things.

Incredible mystery with an O. Henry-type ending

This book floored me! What an ending! I never saw it coming! I recommend this book for those who like really well developed characters and a really good story that leads you hither and yon with a great mystery plot! It was not written by an American, but the English version of everything is very interesting. Especially the different spellings.

wow! started reading this to try to get an understanding of what it would be like in the mind of someone with a serious brain injury. Although it's fiction, it gave a remarkable look inside the brain and how it functions. But in fear of giving away the plot, I can't really tell more about it except to say WOW. Never saw the twist coming, which to me shows great writing. a definite must read if into psychological thrillers

This was a good, fast read. I wasn't sure for a lot of the book if I was liking it or not, it was at times hard to read because material was disturbing. But then.... no spoilers but wow did it end with a bang! I knew something was up the whole time but couldn't figure out what it may be, I was quite surprised.

A most diverting read!

I was hoping for something departing from my usual thriller, mystery and was pleasantly surprised. Kes is very easy to read and a delightful change from my usual fare. Finding that she actually knew whereof she spoke explained the realism and love so refreshing in her dialogue, considering the subject matter. I look forward to another "trip" with her.

I can't say it's the best book I've ever read character development is very basic and phrasing a tad awkward at times but I liked the core story and didn't see the plot twist coming. If you've a spare afternoon you lose nothing in giving this boom a read.

Enjoyed this very much even if the ending was somewhat predictable. Well written account of what it feels like to have a traumatic brain injury and the numbing effect of medication. Liked the central character very much

Great read

In the beginning, this book takes the reader along at a steady pace, thinking it is an ordinary book about a psycho killer. But keep reading... the plot twists and turns so that by the half-way point, I couldn't put it down!

Well worth the time I spent reading it

Caught my interest in the first chapter and kept it all the way to the last word of the last chapter. I even wanted to read the author's note AFTER the last chapter and am glad I did.
