When four broke writers meet for their annual retreat in upstate New York, they share it all—insulting rejection letters, crushing disappointments, the projects that almost made it but fell short. With s'mores, too much wine, and the need to let loose, they decide to have some harmless fun and create an outlandish story using AI.
But what starts out as a joke accidentally produces a real book that somehow goes viral and brings an unexpected cash windfall the likes of which they’d never thought possible.
As book sales surge and pressure to maintain their anonymity mounts, they turn against each other, leading to deadly consequences.
In The Accidental Life of MF Ascher, loyalties are tested, reputations are at stake, and revenge is the only way out.
Dark, gripping, and laugh-out-loud funny, this is a novel about friendship and the intoxicating dangers of money, technology, and the blinding quest to succeed at any cost.
This was an enjoyable and entertaining read about four broke women writers who meet for their annual retreat in upstate NY, to share all of their disappointments with each other. They decide to have a little fun while having some drinks, and write an outlandish story using AI. The book wasn't supposed to get “out”, but it does….and it goes viral. Sales surge, and as the pressure to remain anonymous falls on them, they start to turn on one another, and that results in deadly consequences
This one gripped me from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I am not a fan of how popular AI is getting, and this story just shows you how it can affect us. I enjoyed the different POV’s from each characters and felt they were easy to connect with. I also loved the reviews they have in the chapters too. Those were definitely really fun. Overall, a fun, twisty, and suspenseful read.
Thank you Suzy approved book tours and the author for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own!

Four writers. Four genres. Four reasons to kill.
I had so much fun reading this very unique book about four writers who use artificial intelligence to create a runaway best seller. This was quirky, fast-paced, and definitely a riot - the twists and turns this book took me through was an incredible ride.
I believe the scariest books are the ones that could really happen…
This story is told through 4 points of view, we meet four broke writers who decided to meet for their annual retreat in upstate New York, they decide to share it all, the rejection letters, their crushing disappointments, even the projects that almost made it but fell short. This was such a hilarious story, with a really unique plot! I loved that the four authors decided to use AI, something that is absolutely despised in the writing world, to just make their day a little better with a silly story. I also enjoyed that we got to see everyone’s POV, as that made the story come to life more for me. I was able to better understood each women’s hopes for the continued success of their book and others to follow, and of course, learn their dark, dark secrets that they hid from the rest of them. It also made me laugh out loud a lot. I definitely recommend this one!
Four very different women all trying to make it in the writing world, each with a different genre and reason for writing. The four get together for their yearly writing retreat, only this time will be different than any other. Jokingly, the three decide to write a novel with AI, each inputting their own twist to see just how absurd the AI writing is. Chelsea decides to self publish this novel and gives each one a copy. A reminder of their weekend and what a joke AI is. But when it takes off and starts blowing up the best seller list, they can hardly believe it! Some love it, some hate it, some can't believe this was actually published, and others think it's a stroke of genius writing. Soon they have more money than they know what to do with and people are demanding to know, just who is this MF Ascher anyways? They decide they need someone to be the face of MF Ascher, there is no way it can be found out that the four of them wrote this using AI. Agreeing that a lawyer would be best to be the face of MF Ascher, they hire someone on but with more money and continued success comes more dilemmas. The four now seem to all have different opinions and they are each making decisions behind the others back, and soon they all find themselves at the center of death which could make or break the MF Ascher phenomena. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite.
This is a great caper about four friends publishing a book they wrote together one night in a state of inebriation.
The Accidental Life of MF Ascher is a fresh and honest look at writers in today's publishing industry. Think Bad Sisters (2022) in a publishing industry dominated by men and AI.
Never a dull moment with Thalia, Chelsea, Sophia, and Max. I dreaded the oh so predictable outcome when women set out to fight for themselves. These four know they can't win the fight against stereotypes. So they use it with the men who keep doing business as usual, while following through with their plan of revenge. Each fighting their own inner demons along the way.
These writers are smart, and you want them to succeed. You wish they get their revenge and get away with it. It doesn't look they could, though. What could go wrong, goes wrong. You see it coming, yet it gets worse than you could ever imagine. And like any human being, these women are unpredictable and surprise you at every turn. I couldn’t put this fast-paced crime novel down.
Only one question remains at the end of this thriller rom-com. Why do they say: “Over your dead body,” in unison and not, “Over my dead body." Is there going to be a sequel? A series? The fourth book about the last surviving writer? Hmm.
Not only was this an entertaining and witty read, but it was incredibly timely as it tackles the issue of AI-generated work in the publishing industry.
Four women, now friends, who are struggling authors, meet for their annual writing retreat. They once again come to share their rejection letters and life’s disappointments. But with the glow of friendship and a whole lot of wine, they have a laugh about throwing out ideas to AI and seeing what comes out. It was all for laughs…Until one of them publishes it. And it goes viral.
I loved these women; each has a distinct personality, and although we don’t get a lot of background information, you do get a sense of who they are. The story is more about writers and writing, and about authorship (or lack thereof), and then it takes a dark twist. What are they willing to do to protect their secret?
Book reviews for the “Accidental AI” book were posted at the beginning of each chapter. And as someone who reviews a lot of books, I couldn’t help but laugh at these literary critiques! And while we all have different reading tastes, it raises the question of whether we could be fooled.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @ivyhbookerauthor for the gifted book.
If AI learns to write as skillfully as Ivy H. Booker, human writers may need to find new jobs. I was thrilled to receive an Advanced Reader Copy, as I couldn’t wait to read this novel about four writers, four reasons to kill, and the story they create with Artificial Intelligence.
The characters all have secrets, the plot unwinds in unlikely ways, and the themes are thought-provoking. There’s an abundance of creativity and imagination within these pages. Mystery even shrouds the author -Ivy H Booker is admittedly a pen name, and I’m so curious to know who wrote this book.
The chapters begin with fictional reviews of a fictitious book written by AI, and these little snippets are witty, twisty, and fun to read, just like the plot. Highly entertaining, this novel raises questions about the ethics and challenges of AI for writers and the publishing industry and underscores the fragility and strength of friendship.
I’m convinced no machine could write a book worthy of high accolades. Right?
The Accidental Life of MF Ascher by Ivy H. Booker is an incredible novel I could not stop reading.
I love stories about authors. This story starts off innocent enough with 4 authors who meet up at their retreat in upstate New York and commiserate how broke they are. Chatting about the rejections, the frustrations, the "almost" projects that failed.
Eventually they are joking about creating a story using AI to write the craziest story ever. And of course, to their shock it's a huge seller and goes viral brining a load of cash their way.
The story is told through each of the 4 writers, which I really loved the individual thoughts.
But trying to keep their identity a secret is getting difficult with all the publicity.
The writers are starting to turn on each other, and the unspeakable happens.
With so many secrets and twists, this plot is so impressive moves along at a perfect pace.
The characters are well developed, flawed and fleshed out.
What a hoot this book is! Four friends, all frustrated writers (the publishing world doesn’t appreciate their rare talents), collaborate off the top of their heads on a story using AI. Though they do it as a joke, it will come as no surprise to readers that the AI novel becomes a runaway bestseller. What will surprise you, however, are the many twists and turns that follow as the four writers come to realize it will take nothing less than murder to conceal their identities and the damaging truth about their novel’s computer-generated origin. This spoofy crime story delivers quirky characters in a timely tale that’s occasionally dark but always clever and fun.
By the way, this story of an AI novel created by four writers using the pen name of MF Ascher has actually been written by four writers using the pen name of Ivy H. Booker. Is this life imitating art or art imitating life? Either way, it’s a highly entertaining read!
The Accidental Life Of MF Ascher is a fun, unpredictable, and propulsive read, starting with the first sentence: It’s crazy to think that we fight our whole lives not to be put into some kind of box, and yet, when it’s all said and done, that’s exactly where we wind up.
Even with that hint of foreboding—someone’s going to end up in a box—the voice is warm, conversational, like a good and funny friend. I know right away I’m going to enjoy reading this novel. And I did. I devoured this tale of four women writers, who’re easy friends, passionate about writing and the struggles of big dreams. I cozied up with them on their retreat, drank vodka, laughed, and cursed. The novel is as witty as it is sober, as fierce as it is tender. If you love endearing novels about female friendship and creative ambition, you’ll find this scathing take on today’s publishing industry absolutely delightful.
I’m in love with the premise of this book and what can happen with too much wine around a campfire. That it was written by a group of writers is even better! Obviously, it’s a multiple POV work. The characters are wonderful and an absolute hoot. LOL is spot on in this case. The chapter reviews are a great touch.
I probably would have passed on the book based on the cover – I’m a self proclaimed cover whore – but the description grabbed me from the beginning. AI is definitely the hot topic these days – I’m not a fan either. But…keep up or get left behind. The possibilities of what it can do to authors, books, and a myriad of other issues are a topic of their own. This story combined all the concerns in one package and wrapped it in humor, twists, and suspense. I very much enjoyed the book and think you will too.

This novel is riveting! I was invested in the characters and their lives. Four writers meet for their annual writers retreat. They have each suffered a loss or dreams crushed. Wine, venting and frustration lead to a PROBLEM! For fun they each contribute a lead/line for an AI story. The story gets published online and the reviews are coming in HOT! They are a hit, and no one knows who the author is. I loved how the chapters open with countless reviews from readers and add to the drama! One of the main characters turns up DEAD, and they quickly turn on each other because NO ONE wants anyone to know who they are or the book was created by AI.
Will they find out what happened to their friend and what will they do about it!
What’s not to love? It has all the elements you could ask for in a propulsive read: friendship, secrets, ambition, fraud, plot twists, wonderful writing, intrigue, wit, laugh-out-loud humor, and an a juicy commentary on both the publishing industry and AI. Not only is there a fictional mystery involving four writers, but there is a real life mystery as well: Ivy Booker is a nom de plume, and no one knows the identity of the four writers it conceals. All will be revealed at the book launch zoom tomorrow evening, April Fool’s Day! If you want to attend, it’s not too late - you can sign up on Ivy’s Instagram page.
I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy - thank you, Ivy! - and the book goes on sale tomorrow.
The scariest, most suspenseful novels are not the ones about imaginary monsters hiding under our beds. They are the stories that bring our very real fears to life, chasing them through the streets of fatal consequence. Ivy H. Booker certainly accomplished that in The Accidental Life of MF Ascher. I nearly shattered my tablet, grasping it tighter with each passing page. As an author, I was terrified for this quartet of women as their innocent (albeit wine-fueled) expression of frustration explodes, tearing them apart and threatening their very lives. A clever and twisting plot, a cast of complex characters stretched taut between their best and worst selves, and a very relevant ethical conundrum make for a gripping read. Five stars!
Told seamlessly through 4 distinct points of view, The Accidental Life of MF Ascher had me from the first line.
The story is threaded with all the ingredients I love encountering in fiction: intrigue, suspense, believable characters, humour, emotional investment, surprise twists--and underlying all of it a razor-sharp take on real, universally relatable issues that serves to entertain while begging important, unsettling questions.
The narrative flowed brilliantly, and I especially enjoyed how each perspective joined forces to offer a well-rounded glimpse into the psyche of a writer in today's landscape. Highly recommend.
The Accidental Liftoff MF Ascher is a compelling, intriguing, funny story about four failed writer girlfriends gathering for their annual retreat at the lake house.
The four characters, their connection to each other, their antics and life challenges will hit close to home for many of us writers, although the surprising plot takes a dark turn far beyond where I would ever go. But it was a fun read.
I couldn't put it down until I came to the end. Loved every page! I give it my highest recommendation for a women's fiction novel (for lack of a closer genre).
This is a quirky fun read involving four writer friends that get together for their annual weekend retreat and together they pen a surprisingly successful book with a little help from AI. An intriguing premise for this day and age, and I really liked that it tackled the friendship aspect along with suspenseful thriller vibes. I enjoyed the multiple points of view and getting that personal insight into each of the characters and the price they'll pay to achieve their career goals.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Female friendships, writing, and a wee spot of homicide?
Sign me up.
I loved the timely aspect of the generative AI. I loved the unmistakable voices of all four friends. I loved the Amazon-style reviews at the beginning of each chapter. I RELISHED in giant doses of COMEUPPANCE.
Yes, retribution is my Primary Love Language, and no, I will not be discussing it with my therapist.
Oh! And to make it even more perfect? It turns out Ivy H. Booker is the nom de plume of a writing quartet.
As far as I know, art hasn’t imitated life beyond that, and they’re all alive.
This book is very clever. It is a drama along with some compelling thriller elements. It’s about deception and the world of publishing. It is very timely with the use of AI at the core of the plot.
It also has to do with friendship and it is written in multiple points of view.
I’m also completely intrigued that the author of this book is a pen name for a group of writers who came together through the Women’s Fiction Writers Association.
It all feels deliciously mysterious and I love it.
This was such a fun read! It was a great mix of female friendship, revenge, family drama, suspense and more! Admittedly I don’t know enough about AI and was fascinated by the major role it played in this story. The multiple POV worked really well and I enjoyed getting a glimpse into each character’s background and thoughts about the current situation. There is something for everyone who loves to read in this unique book!
THE ACCIDENTAL LIFE OF MF ASCHER had a very creative plot that was unlike any book I’ve read before. The subject matter is heavily dealing with current events in the publishing industry and I found that extremely interesting. Told through the POVs of four struggling authors, this one was right up my alley!
Many thanks to Ivy H. Booker for my gifted copy.
This review will be shared to my Instagram account (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the future.
It was impossible to put this book down! It manages to be both chilling and laugh-out-loud funny, with lots of twists and turns I couldn't predict. The topic--a book written by AI going viral--is timely, the dialogue is realistic, and the "book reviews" that open each chapter are hilarious. I liked diving into all four POVs, and there are some incredibly satisfying scenes I will never forget. Wish I could give it a hundred stars!
This book really dives into the ‘what ifs’ surrounding the rise of AI, exploring ideas that feel all too relevant today. It’s gripping and fun, with a twisty plot that keeps you on your toes. Unpredictable and fast-paced, it pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read that makes you think while keeping you entertained.
I’ve always found generative AI rather repellant, but this story ABOUT AI? So much less so. First off, books about books are my absolute favourite thing. Coupled with 4 fantastic, distinct POVs, a tonne of conniving, and several helpings of JUST DESSERTS made this one top tier, for me. Also: Don’t sleep on those pre-chapter reviews. They’re gold.
This book took me by surprise in the best possible way. Clever, unique and well written with a twisty storyline filled with complicated characters you love to hate and hate to love. The plot is perfectly paced and takes the reader on a thrill ride from start to finish. I hope that The End...for now means there's a sequel coming! Kudos to the fab four behind Ivy H. Booker!
This book had an interesting and timely premise. The four main characters were well-written, each representing different insecurities that were easy to relate to. I thought the book started off slow, but I couldn't read the second half fast enough. There were laugh-out-loud moments, and there were jaw-dropping ones. The twists and turns held my interest up to the very end.
The plot — four writers use AI to write a best seller — is interesting enough, but when you add the complex characters, it’s fascinating. I loved how real the emotions were, never shying from the ugly truth. The dynamic between the four writers was layered and beautiful. I loved this story!!
Excellent book! Fascinating that four writers could create something that intertwines together so beautifully and keeps the reader turning the page, and waiting for more intrigue and excitement. This novel is the kind of dark, twisty fiction I like.
Absolutely loved this story. Written by 4 different authors with a cast of unique characters that each help paint this story to life. The ending was great and left me wanting to see what they write next.
