American high school senior, Ian MacKay, comes to a small Japanese town as an exchange student for his last year of high school. Seeking a quiet place where he will have peace and time to work through some of his problems, he encounters more distractions than he planned on. The novelty of an American in their school causes some of the students to become overly anxious to confess their feelings for him, while others want nothing more than for him to leave. His only measure of comfort comes from his nice host family with a young girl who claims him as a brother, and a small group of friends determined to learn more about him. As Ian tries to settle into life in his new surroundings, there is only one question he has to answer. Was coming to Japan a terrible mistake?
This is a young adult book but I still enjoyed it. Shoujo style is a Japanese form of writing for teen girls involving romance.
Ian Mackay is an American studying in Japan as a high school exchange student. All the girls in his new high school love him. He's handsome and nice. But, he has rejected their love offers. He's not looking for a girlfriend; he just wants to study and have friends.
There is something in his past that haunts him and that only a few people know about and the reader is not lucky enough to know. What is he running away from? What did he do that he wants to forget or who important to him has died? To find out, we will have to read the sequel(s).
This would make a perfect graphic novel. There's a lot of dialogue with some prose to connect scenes. The downside of this is that there isn't enough description of places or characters. Even though this story takes place in a small Japanese town, I was picturing suburban America.
