Autumn in Erie, Indiana means crisp, cool days of intrigue and subterfuge. Katherine “Katz” Kendall settles into her late great aunt’s Victorian mansion with her high-spirited feline companions. What better time to host a Halloween party? Katz sets the stage with scary decorations, a fortune teller, and even a magician. Jake and Colleen join in the adventure. Scout — a Siamese with extraordinary abilities — fang marks a “Wheel of Fortune” Tarot card. Is it because her person will soon receive millions, or does that card have a more ominous meaning? Although Iris is smitten with the magic man, it’s unclear whether he’s a lovable rogue, or an opportunistic thief. Along the way, Katz and her cats uncover important clues to the identity of a serial killer, and find out about Erie’s crime family . . . the hard way.
This fun, fast-paced third book in “The Cats that . . . Cozy Mystery” series involves five extraordinary felines that help Katz solve a crime. Read the first book of the series, “The Cats that Surfed the Web” and the second book “The Cats that Chased the Storm."
Another cute and fun read. Heavy on the cats. Though things get a bit more series when Katz meets Erie's crime family and a serial killer is running around town. Never fear, the antics of the cats will get you through.
I have enjoyed the storylines in each of these first three books in this series. They are engaging, quick reads, and I love how each of the cats has a different voice and personality. The writing is so well done. Highly recommended for lovers of cozy mysteries and cats. I definitely plan to continue this series!
The Cats That borrows from The Cat Who series by Lillian Jackson Braun, but in a good way! They're light, fun reads, cute characters and creative plots. The Cats That Told A Fortune fleshed out a little more of the town with the covered bridge festival, and the characters are rounding out and evolving.
This is a fun and loving story about a woman and her love for her five feline housemates. The woman has a heart of gold and the felines provide mischief and discoveries abound. Fast read too!
Should have been a great plot but sadly fell flat at the end. Her Halloween party should be great. She has hired a party planner and has invited her favourite people. Her relationship is going well and her BFF has come down to visit. The only blots on the horizon are the classes (that she is running and that some people make fun off) and the news that a serial killer is on the loose. Especially when one of her students, a young mother, is attacked and in a coma. However the party ends up with a missing cat and an attack by the killer. Can the two women protect themselves?
Okaaaay... I’m just gonna say it. That ending. What the heck was that. It was so out of the blue and abrupt. The serial killer mystery was almost a nothing side plot. Jake’s mum’s cold shoulder act came to nought, and don’t get me started about Barbie and her family.
Mark is still distancing himself from Katz for unknown reasons, and the catnapping that got the characters in a frenzy for the final few chapters should have been the focus of the whole book.
Not my favourite so far, although to was nice to see Colleen again.
I am so glad I found this series, it has been a source of much enjoyment. The cats remind me of my own 3 Siamese. I am a native Hoosier and have lived in the Covered Bridge capital of the world most of my life. The quick easy reads are interesting and I love 'exploring' the great old mansion. Thank you Ms Golden once again for a fun Read! I'm getting the next book of the series immediately.
A nice little cozy romance, with a bit of a mystery thrown in. Eight months into her year probation for the inheritance, and Katz is hosting a Halloween party for her friends... add a side of serial killings, breaking and entering, and a local crime family for good measure. What more could anyone want?
Another fast, enjoyable read in this series about a lady who inherits a fortune and a cat which she adds to her own 3 Siamese. I like books like these because they are good for reading before bed. They are quick enough that I can read several chapters and finish the book in a day or two. I like the way the author fleshes out her cast of characters.
A wonderful story with a great Halloween party and Katz starts her computer classes. Colleen comes for a visit and a missing cat causes all kinds of have as does a serial killer. A great book and now I want to read the next one to see what happens next.
Katz has a Halloween party with a fortune teller and a magician who "borrows" from guests and has a scavenger hunt to find them. Meanwhile, there is a serial killer. And humor and romamce.
A tornado wrecked the pink Manson! The Manson is fixed and a Halloween party is all set!! Iris one of the Siamese is taken! These cats are smart! A serial killer is caught! Love cats love this series!🐱🤗
Quick fun read! So quick, in fact, that I never even got around to listing it as a "currently reading" here on Goodreads. Started it late on Monday night and finished it early evening on Tuesday -- and no I didn't spend the entire day reading! Golden's novels aren't particularly long, are well written and easy to read.
In this adventure, which takes place just a couple of months after the end of the action in the second novel, Katherine and her cats are moving back into the Victorian mansion she inherited from her great aunt. Renovations from the tornado (also from the second novel)are almost complete, including the remodel to allow Katz to finally begin teaching in her new computer classroom. Her first class is made up of three women and one man, all from the Erie area. One of the women, Barbie, is the daughter of the man who is known as the local crime boss, and she is annoyingly loud and rude. After a while, Katherine makes a decision, refunds Barbie's money, and ushers her out the door. That afternoon, she then contacts the next person on the class list to come and take her place.
When this book opens, Erie, Indiana is experiencing something very unusual -- a serial killing spree. When Katherine's newest student ends up the next victim, the mystery begins to take an ominous form.
All of the action in this novel takes place in the fall, based around two events, one being the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. If you are an Indiana resident, you already know what this is. If you aren't, google it -- it is an interesting mix of historic, architectural and flea market goings on! The second event is Katherine's first party in Erie, a Halloween party featuring both a fortune teller and a magician.
As usual, there are run ins with unsavory characters, love interest drama, cat capers, break-ins, burglary, cat-napping, and danger galore for our favorite Erie residents.
Pacing and plotting is top notch, making the novel move easily from one scene to another and allowing the reader to become the proverbial fly-on-the-wall witness to the action. Editing/proofing is also very good, with only one misspelled word popping up for me -- but after the second time it popped up, I decided it really wasn't a misspelling, just an abbreviation the author used in dialogue.
I think this is my favorite of the the series so far, but that could be because I'm becoming very familiar with the characters, which always makes the reader feel more involved in the story. I'll probably start the 4th book in the series later tonight, and who knows? It might become my new favorite by the end of the week!
Fun and easy read. The plot wasn't as well developed as the earlier two books but the same great characters and excitement. I will definitely be continuing the series.
This is the best of The Cats That series so far. The characters were believeable. New characters were brought in and older characters visited. The cats seemed to take a more active part in this book than the first two. I was left with the feeling the sinister family brought in wasn't quite as sinister as talked about and they may be developed a little more in the continuing series. Diversionary tactics were used so that the murderer was at the scene, but I was a little surprised by who it turned out to be, though I picked up a little hint before the very end of the book. I was especially pleased that at the end, Katz wasn't just the damsel in distress. She's a woman who can take care of herself when necessary. I admire the author's choice in making her that kind of character. I enjoyed this book. All the small home town touches were there. Romance was hinted at. Friendships are building. The mystery was kept in the background for most of the book, but then when it finally made it to the forefront, there were some twists and turns, extra characters thrown in to confuse the situation, the reveal and then a gentle pull back into Katz's every day world. Yes, a very enjoyable, easy read. I was kind of sad to put this one down.
