Project Super Crush! #1

Project Super Crush: Act One

Rate this book
Eastvale a colorful college campus that seems like a place of absolute wonder and fantasy. Only for Jay Johnson, it’s a reminder—of everything he’s not. With a father who was once the school’s star quarterback, Jay has spent his life falling short of expectations. But that’s fine. He’s not here to play—he’s here to write, documenting the team’s every move instead. Following his father's legacy his own way.

Then there’s Christian Miller—the Tigers’ current starting quarterback, beloved by campus. He's got the charm, genetics, and pretty much everything from the outside looking in. But lately, it seems that world is crumbling from the inside. Christian's different. Distracted. Burnt out. The life that once felt seamless now feels like a script he’s struggling to follow.

When their paths cross, one misunderstanding after another throws them into an unexpected collaboration that neither saw coming.

Project Super Act One is a deliberate start to the series, properly setting the stage for a fated journey between two young men finding their way—on and off the field.

YIPPEE I GET TO BE THE FIRST REVIEW FOR THIS BOOK, AUTOMATIC 5 STARS CUZ I LOVE BLACK GAY YAOIIIIII

ok serious note tho i just feel so seen with this book!! not only because of the general black mlm rep but also in jay johnson specifically. a black fiction writer who anxious as hell & knows fuck all about sports terminology? HE IS ME & I AM HIM‼️ as for christian, he genuinely pissed me off with that mess he pulled with the notebook.. but I was also giggling & kicking my feet whenever he teased jay so… not fully forgiven but we are getting there. very excited to see his character grow from here (as well as jay’s ofc) but he’s on paper thin ice.

in conclusion: I NEED ACTS 2 & 3 NOWWWW!!!

I love black gay yaoi, okay, but seriously, I loved how we had two black characters that weren’t painted in a stereotypical way and had a chance to be shy and vulnerable. We don’t get to see that often and the fact we see that here makes me soooo happy.

The story is cute, silly, but also made me a bit emotional. I could relate to both of them and seeing a black character, especially one who is darkskin, be shy and likes nerdy stuff is amazing. I loved this so much ❤️❤️🥹🥹

Curshing hard on Project Super Crush (semi spoiler review)

I've been seeing reels of Project Super Crush for a while. And right away i had a feeling this would be a good one. When i finally got around to it and pressed play on the audiobook of act 1, i was instantly hooked.

Before the first two chapters are over, we get to know just enough of Jay and Christian, to be pulled in and quite frankly charmed. Whether it is shy and sweet Jay, hoping to live up to his family name and legacy or the star quarterback Christian trying to recapture the drive for his game, you can't help but fall in love with the two main characters.

Jay Johnson is my new favorite main character. His shy and awkward moments when talking to pretty much anyone or hiding from Christian, make me smile while also wanting to protect him. The way his fantasy and creativity takes over is endearing. Here the audio drama with amazing cast greatly captures the manga/anime vibe with sound effects. The glimpses of his fierceness and fears only strengthens readers hope for him to find his way and focus on his clear talent in writing fiction.

In the case of Christian Miller, his cocky demeanor and untrust of Jay at times drive you crazy (see the whole Notebook fiasco). Though from the start reader can peak through the facade to see the real Christian. The one who fears losing his position not only in the team, but also social standing. The one who obviously loves nerdy stuff and art (as well as creating it), but fears ridicule of being himself. You can't help but root for him just as much, to find happiness in his true self.

The incident, which forces these two to spend time together, had me on the edge of my seat for a moment there... (Honestly who took the picture?). Jay's (unfound) guilt for his part in it results in ability to help Christian. Project Super Crush is a go.

Quite predictably i wanted to dive right into Act 2, to find out how it all plays out, but also more about Jay,Christian and honestly all the other characters. Theres obviously more to both main characters and while reading the first act, i caught myself wanting to know more about them. And the second act has delivered on that front plentifully.

Speaking of, JDK created such a great group of side characters, that will charm you as much as the main duo. Rubi and Lee are the friends you hope to find at college - quite possibly friends for life. Ryan, Jay's father and former star quarterback of the team, is loving and well meaning, yet clueless in some ways. But my favorite has to be Blue Pedretti, hes such a goofball and i can't help loving every moment he appears in.

The first act of Project Super Crush is a great read/listen that pulls you in. You start with Jay arriving to campus and before you know it you're reading about Christian agreeing to the project. I loved every moment of it. JDK's first project is definitely a crush for me 😊

Also about the audio drama of PSC: Bravo! JDK and Zeno Robinson are perfect as the main characters. Just like the rest of the cast with their respective characters as well. The soundtrack and sound effects create the perfect atmosphere that transported me, not unlike Jay, into the story. And when i closed my eyes, i could see the anime version of the Eastvale University campus in my mind.

This was tooooooo cute!!! The characters were adorbs, the plot is very light-hearted (I needed a break from an intense plot heavy series I’ve been reading lately), and the audio drama was 👩🏾‍🍳’s💋!!!
