Even though it is considered a book for children, "Le avventure di Pinocchio" isn't really the sweet fluffy book you'd give to a small child. For that, there's the Disney movie version, which wipes away much of the original novel's "cruelty".
In the real book Pinocchio faces loads of (dis)adventures: he works as a guard dog, he risks to be eaten by a green fisherman, becomes a donkey and gets eaten by a shark. At the end he becomes a real boy, as he has always wanted, but this to the price of becoming a serious boy who works in order to support his old and ill father.
It isn't really a fairy tale, even if it has fantastic places and talking beasts, and the end is all but what you would expect from a book for children. I, for one, have always found it pretty sad.

While this book is definitely stranger than you would think, and often you want to just yell at Pinocchio for all his foolishness, the kids LOVED this story. All of them (4-14) listened intently and were equally amused and frustrated with the dear marionette. There’s some darker imagery that may be difficult for more sensitive kids but honestly my kids didn’t bat an eye. Redeem your Disney-fied story and read this book!

This book would be great to read with little ones, a chapter a night. There is symbolism that could be discussed and taught through Pinocchio's bad example. Reading it as an adult i just wanted Pinocchio to get his comeuppance. Now that I think about it- this book applies to so many immature adults that continue bad behavior and do not connect actions to consequences.
