A top-secret account of the people and powers that make up ZODIAC. Includes an exclusive preview of Stan Lee's upcoming illustrated novel, Zodiac! When twelve magical superpowers are unleashed on the world, a Chinese-American teenager named Steven will be thrown into the middle of an epic global chase. He'll have to master strange powers, outrun super-powered mercenaries, and unlock the mysterious powers of the Zodiac.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
I came across this on Kobo and had to get it! I'm really looking forward to the release of The Zodiac Legacy Convergence and I think this was a great prequel that goes over the main characters and the Chinese zodiac signs they're tied to. I look forward to jumping into Part 2 which covers the Vanguard aka the bad guys!!
Here's the story thus far. Stan Lee, (yes, the Marvel Stan Lee), and Stuart Moore are writing, and Andie Tong is drawing, a new graphic superhero series for young readers. (It's not in a comic book style, but rather has loads of illustrations that highlight or dramatize the written story.)
The angle is that there are twelve superpowers available, based on the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Some villains, the "Vanguard", have received powers and have formed up into a gang led by former mercenary Maxwell. Some heros-to-be have received powers, and they are forming a team to battle the Vanguard. The central hero is 13 year old Steve, who accidentally walked into a Vanguard Zodiac experiment, was unintentionally powered, and is on the run while looking for other good guys.
The first volume of the series, "The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence", won't be released until January 27, 2015. But, two "tasters" have been released as free Kindle downloads.
This first sample is "The Zodiac Archives: Part 1". It consists of brief dossiers on each of the superpowered heros, and then an extended 6 chapter preview from the to be released book. The second free taster is "The Zodiac Legacy: The Vanguard Archives". This book has brief descriptions of the Vanguard villains written by a hero who had briefly been with the Vanguard. This second sample then progresses to the same 6 chapter preview that appears in the first taster. Since they're free, they set out the characters, and they give you a sense of how "Convergence" will be written there's no downside to giving these two freebies a try if it seems you might be interested in the series.
For what it's worth, this looks like it could be fun. The characters have interesting abilities, although nothing stunningly new, (strength, speed, intuition, technical and computer skills, agility, stealth, and so on). It appears that a real effort is being made to develop strong and distinctive personalities for each figure and it would be nice if the books are more than illustrated, prose video games.
The target reading age has been described variously as starting somewhere from 8 to 12 years old and that seems about right. The writing is crisp, clear and direct but not so bare bones that it just reads like cartoon captions. There is a real effort to develop personalities for the characters and to offer realistic sounding dialogue and descriptions. There's a big cast of characters, a lot of globe-trotting, and a lot of action, which all feels like it could just be fun. I guess time will tell.
Please note that I found these books while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
It's really a preview for a book coming out in January 2015. The first third of it is actually seven character bios from one character's point of view, and the rest is the first six chapters of the book, and those are from a different character's point of view. It's probably aimed at kids age 9 and older. It has potential.
This was way better than I had expected, it was cute, fun and full of action. I wish this was much longer cause I could have read this forever. I was very intrigued by the zodiac powers and the struggle for those powers. It was short and sweet and I don't want to give anything away so I will just say, read this!!! It's a fabulous story for one and all.
I read this after reading book 1 and book 2 of the series. I think this is cool, just if you've read the books already it isn't really necessary. Especially since over half is just an excerpt of book 1.
I've read almost all the Zodiac Legacy Books, and I love the series. I'm into different cultures and fantasy books, and this series gave us an idea of what might happen if random people somehow got the power of their zodiac year.
