The Deadliest Sin

Rate this book
Mina Carlisle is a troublemaker; everyone knows it, everyone expects it. Sent to live with her aunt in Scotland, she makes fast friends with the rebellious clique at Blair High. When she gets caught redhanded vandalizing the school gym, she must pay the consequences.

Fiona Ainsley couldn’t have been brought up in a more proper family. The daughter of a minister, she’s the prime example of virtue and goodness, a model student and an avid Christian. Her good nature may be her undoing, however, when the principal handpicks her for a task her family disagrees with.

It is clear from the start of the forced arrangements that Mina and Fiona hold only contempt for one another. Being from very different walks of life, they agree on almost nothing. Pride is never a good trait, though, and can certainly be someone’s downfall.

Tough to review....

I really liked the first half of the story. That part was written very tight and felt honest. I connected with the characters and wanted to know more about them. First half was five stars, easily. The second half became more disjointed and left me disappointed. I especially was frustrated with the aunt. She seemed over the top laid back. While I appreciated her unconditional love, at times, it felt unrealistic. For someone who seemed caring and concerned about her niece's education, she sure was missing a lot more often than she was in the beginning. It got boring in places and felt like the writer was padding the story to make it longer than it needed to be. It was a real struggle for me to to keep reading. And then it seemed to jump months/years. I got kind of confused. I would have been happy if the story ended right after the play. I know there probably needed to be some resolution, and I appreciate that, but I would have been happier to have it end there. At the end, it seemed like everything came together in a nice, neat bow....and that felt forced. Also at the end, one of the characters indicated that four years had passed since it had began, but I was under the impression that both characters had two years left of secondary education, and then four years of university. (Not sure I remember where the setting was... UK and US... Maybe education is different at university level in UK.) Nevertheless, the second part felt like it was written by another person, (it was co-authored, so maybe it was.) Because of this disjointed feeling, I rate the second part as two stars. As a complete novel, overall: three stars.

Cute but frustrating

The overall story is good and I enjoyed reading about it. I enjoyed the ending and the epilogue, you're left with a since of closure for the characters... more so than in a lot of other romances I have read. I do recommend this buying this book.

My only issue I had was the way it was written. The POV switches back and forth every few paragraphs and repeats some of the events over in the new perspective. If the authors had decided to just do one POV each chapter about a fifth of the content would be gone due to repetition. In this sense the book does seem to drag.

I loved this book becasue of the story it told. It was different from other books I've read in the genre and I liked the unique perspectives. For me, the best part was that it went beyond initial meeting and romance. A good read!
