She hates me…

I’m going to make her fall in love with me anyway.

As captain of the SoCal Vipers, the last couple of seasons haven’t been going well. My stats are slipping, and I’m at risk of being traded.

So, I’m not in the mood for a case of mistaken identity with the woman playing bouncer at the arena door.

But when I find out she’s come to town to escape her controlling family and make a fresh start, I know I can’t just let her walk away.

I’ll do anything to make sure she’s safe.

And if that means claiming her forever…then all the better.

Because she’s mine.

Even if she doesn’t know it yet.

When the Game Breakers meet more than hearts will be broken…

They’ll claim, protect, and...maybe just rock their women's worlds.

Update to my update. (10/23/24)

I have heard from the authors and the are adding TWs to all their listings for the book. So I want to update my review.

Okay, I've had some time to sit with it, and I'm updating my rating now.

It doesn't change how I feel about how the 3rd Act played out, but that's their right to tell that story, I just want readers like myself to not be blindsided.

New rating:
3.5 Stars

Review on 10/21/24)

Mostly because I have only seen ONE other reviewer even touch what my issues were. And I really want people to know what type of content this book had, since I reached out to one of the authors to share my worries on no TWs being listed and I haven't seen any changes made. I'm not trying to have a high horse, it's just what I do as a reviewer.

I am also a booktuber and my most recent weekly wrap up has a 20 minute rant about this book and what pissed me off. I hold no ill will towards the authors for this, but I go into detail about how a certain situation in the 3rd Act character-bombed the hero. I could not take one thing he said seriously after this. I am also baffled that no BETA readers or early readers pointed this out (I mean maybe they did, but there's no warning, so I assume not). I am just flabbergasted. The hero acted like an Ex-Boyfriend in said scene. An ex-boyfriend the heroine is leaving to find a new man to raise her child with kinda ex-boyfriend.

It also breaks my heart because I freaking LOVED this hero. No joke, I adored him. and this was like getting a surprise sucker punch.

I even think they could have still had him freak out, but you know what you don't do? Have him say, "You need to get rid of it" and "Aspen, this isn't negotiable" Ex-freaking-cuse me?! No. Just no. If they wanted this kind of scenario still, have him just be stunned to silence. Or have him walk out and not explain. It still has him reacting badly and connects to his fear of losing a partner to childbirth, but it doesn't have him saying something irrevocable. Because he was irrevocable for me after this. I wanted her to run far, far away.

Finally, just put some damn TWs in your book. I don't understand how that's even a question... When including SA, Workplace violence, maternal death and a HERO PUSHING FOR AN ABORTION... who doesn't warn about that? I messaged one of the authors about this and she said they would discuss it together, that's fine. It's up to them. She was kind when I messaged, so I'm not trying to slam her, I just think it's irresponsible and I won't trust any of their books in the future.

But I am pretty disgusted by this.

2.5 Stars
3 on the spice scale

CW: mention of a fatal childbirth (past), survivors guilt, grief, abusive parents, accidental pregnancy, mention of termination of a pregnancy from the H, attempted SA (not by hero), workplace harassment

Initial review (10/17/24)

Okay, my major freak out is explained. However... there is not a single TW listed for this book nor in any of the reviews I read. Which, I'm sorry, that's unacceptable these days. 🤷‍♀️

I won't rate this one yet as I need to cool off first. I was literally adoring this book til 85%. A TW at the front would have left me prepared and in the right mindset.

Instead, I feel betrayed and I don't think the hero did enough grovel, nor did they really talk through it enough to feel satisfying. 😬

So I'm conflicted about my rating, so ill sit with it for a bit.

Icebreaker is a good read.
Kat Mizera and Elise Faber has skillfully written a story with deep emotions and some humour.

This is Aspen and Banks' story. Aspen ran from her family that never respected her, and now she is in Southern California trying to survive alone making various jobs. She meets Banks, a famous hockey player, but she doesn't recognize him and their first encounter is hilarious, but that's enough to spark an interest in each other.

I liked Aspen, she is strong and independent. She deserved some happiness and I was so glad she found someone who cares about her a lot, and a new family in Banks and his friends, because hers was awful. Banks was the best of men, so patient and sympathetic, until he wasn't for a bit because his fears made him act like a prick. Fortunately with some help he understands his mistakes and redeemed himself.

I'm looking forward to read more by this author duo.

I haven’t been able to keep up with every release from these two authors, but I’ve read enough books by both of them to know that they are very good writers, and they showcased their talents brilliantly with this story! The chemistry between the MCs was done well and I liked that they took their time before jumping head first but also, once they jumped, it was sexy-sexy. Feel me? ;) lol I very much enjoyed reading Aspen’s growth from her past and her family. I honestly liked every circumstance in the story except for one, and it’s huge. It’s huge enough that it dropped the rating to where it is and honestly, I don’t know what I’m more upset about, the actual circumstance itself and how it was handled or the fact that two seasoned authors like these two came up with this outrageously lazy third-act breakup!

#RealTalk: I couldn’t turn the page at 86%. It was bad enough that what was happening was happening, but then to have Banks say “Aspen, this isn’t negotiable.” as part of the conversation two grow adults are having, took the sails right from under me. I’m not going to recommend you not read this story over one ridiculous circumstances, but I do want to say to both authors (if they even read this) DO BETTER! That entire scene was mishandled seven ways to Sunday, and even worse, it was thrown in as a last minute like an everyday third-act break-up when it was anything but. This thing that happened is NOT something that has any place at the almost end of a romance fiction journey. I could write a ten-page essay on this one circumstance in this book and all the ways it was mishandled but I get pretty rageful every time I think about it so I’m exciting stage left now. DO BETTER.

Just looking at the cover I thought this would be a typical sports romance with a typical 🐓-y hockey player who knows that he is the best and could have any woman he wanted. I mean... that's exactly the vibe the cover gives, right? And I don't mean that in a bad way, cause I loooove the reformed player trope. 👀😂
While Banks certainly knows that he is good looking and can get (most of) the girls with his charming smile, he is having a tough time cracking Aspen who doesn't fall for his charm at all and is more annoyed with him than anything else. But... you know that is fine for Banks, because very early own I found out that Banks isn't the 🐓-y hockey player I thought he would be. Quite the opposite actually, because Banks is a walking green flag. 💚

He is kind and sweet and caring and attentive and loving and all things good and he has no issue showing his emotions and being open about his feelings and putting in the effort it takes to get the woman that caught his attention. I loved this so much and it was definitely one of the reasons that made this book great for me (besides the obvious hockey hunk 😂).

And Aspen? Gosh, I just wanted to give her a hug, bc she deserves one! 😫 She is such a hard-working person, who definitely doesn't have it easy, despite the background (or rather due to) she comes from. Her strength and endurance is admirable and I was so happy seeing Banks (try to) take care of her while still respecting her strength. He just wanted to make her life better anyway he could while not wanting to take away her autonomy.

These two just made a wonderful and strong couple and I really liked their story! 🥰 It was the first book I read by this author duo, but I definitely hope to read the other books in the Gamesbreakers series as well, because this entire found family just gave me positive vibes and I want to see the other guys get their happy ending as well. 💖

Icebreaker left me wanting more. This group of friends or should I say family is absolutely amazing. The bond Banks shares with Royal, Dash, and Atlas is an unbreakable bond. Also add in the little sister into the group Briar and her daughter Frankie. Adds the cute factor When Aspen enter the fold they all welcome her with open arms. She is strong, resilient and works hard for everything she needs. When Banks and Aspen finally give into each other the chemistry is off the charts. You see all the good with the bad. And in end Aspens found what Banks has with his friends group. A family to make her feel whole, love, respect and trust. This story had it all laughs, love, and hockey. 💙

Aspen is working two jobs and is barely able to keep up. After her shift at the hockey arena, she runs into someone trying to get back into the arena. Imagine her surprise when she finds out that he is the team captain. She makes her way to her second job and Banks is there again. He is at a private table with friends and seems to be getting drunk and entertaining strippers. After a bet with his friends that he can get Aspen’s number, she quickly shoots him down. Once Banks realizes that Aspen is the woman from the arena, he works to find everything he can about her. Aspen won’t give him the time of day, but he works to break down her walls and protect her in any way he can.

Banks is awesome! He is a kind and caring man who is so honest and respectful. I loved that Aspen didn’t immediately fall for Banks’ charm and smile, making him work for it. I felt for Aspen, it sounds like she had a rough life, and is struggling through, even now, to get ahead. I loved when Banks and her came together that Banks helped her, but still respected her and her autonomy.

Banks and Aspen made a great couple. They started with some awesome banter, and their chemistry was off the charts. They challenged each other and have a deep respect for each other. One of my favourite tropes is found family, and this book has it in spades. Banks’ friends have been brought together because of hockey, and have supported each other through many ups and downs. I loved how they were there for each other and supported each other through the difficult stuff.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish and can’t wait for more in this series. If you love a book with great found family, where he falls first, this is the perfect book for you! I can’t wait for more in this series! Thank you to the authors for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.

read if you like: enemies to lovers, he falls first, found family, hockey romance, protective MMC, golden retriever hero

Barely keeping her head above water even with two jobs, Aspen is mortified that the man she tried to bar from entering the hockey arena she spent hours cleaning overnight is smoking hot team captain Banks. After making her apologies, Aspen crashes for a few hours then hustles to her second job tending bar at a private club where none other than Banks is presiding over a table of equally impressive men who also happen to be her bosses.

While boisterously observing the anniversary of their dear friend’s death from an accident, Banks’ besties and partners in the club bet him he can’t get the new bartender to smile at him. A very prickly Aspen shuts him down full stop, and his interest is piqued.

It’s not until they run into each other at the arena again that it registers how they’re connected. Banks makes it his mission to find out all he can about the intriguing and hardworking Aspen, and while she does her best to resist his many charms, in short order they cross the line from business to personal.
Their baggage, however, is significant and refuses to stay in the rearview.

What follows is a sexy, emotional, and sometimes humorous arc of two imperfect people trying to navigate capital F feelings while reckoning with their pasts.

I was fortunate to have been furnished an advance reader copy from 1852 Media and the authors, and I’m sharing my honest review.

I loved Aspen and Banks from their first run in, and even when they went on to meet again and not even realize they had that earlier meeting at the hockey rink. Aspen is fiercely independent and determined to make a name for herself and do things on her own. Banks sees so much in her, but still wants to be there for her and help her, because he also sees the exhaustion in her and her being capable of more than she is offered.

These two play off each other’s characteristics so well. Banks instantly brings her into the fold and into his friend group thats become his family which is a new feeling for her since her own family wasn’t something that she grew up with the warm and fuzzies from. We definitely get a jaw dropping moment between these two late in the book, and the way Banks handles things will shake you as a reader because of how addicted to Aspen he is, but there is a lot of depth and reasoning behind his actions.

Overall, I can’t wait to read more about the other guys in the group. I know they all have trauma from their loss of their best friend and all are going to have incredible stories to tell and I for sure don’t want to miss them.

This one was really slow starting for me. I think had I sat down to read it in one sitting, instead of it being my work out book to read in 20 minute chunks it would have ended up on my dnf pile. Banks was a douche at the start! I was so glad that Aspen kept turning him down and did it in front of his friends. Aspen was just struggling to live, so having this playboy come after her life he did, made him seem like a bigger douche.

I wasn't sure about things when they ended up together, but did love how Banks really pulled Aspen into his life with the people who he considered family. That was huge for Aspen, as she walked away from hers. It was fun to see them all interact and have fun.

Towards the end, Banks once again showed what a douche he was. I'm glad that Aspen put a halt to moving forward with their relationship at that moment. I was also glad when Aspen clued in Banks' friends on why they split and how all of them then talked to him and let him know what a disappointment he was.

The ending bothered me a bit. Banks was the one in the wrong, yet Aspen was the one that went to talk to him first, to take that first step to get back together. With what Banks did, it feels like he should have made the first move.

Universal

Banks isn't used to people, especially women, not recognizing him, but this spitfire is most certainly not impressed by him, nor does she recognize he's the captain of the hockey team whose venue she apparently works at. Then he sees her again at his club and he doesn't even recognize her this time. What he does know is he's drawn to her, so much that he's risking his friends' laughing at him while losing their bet that she'll even give him the time of the day. Nope. No matter, he's persistent, and determined, and in the throes of insta something. He knows he's got his work cut out for him because her walls are stronger than Fort Knox.

Aspen finally left her horrible family behind, and has been working her ass off here to make ends meet, when a p i t a hockey player skates into her life and won't leave. She resists him as long as she can but even her strong defenses can only last so long in the face of his charming persistence. For the first time in her life she's able to trust and rely on someone other than herself. If she was able to let go of her baggage, Banks certainly should be able to also, when the unexpected happens. If he can't, then all his determination to become a part of her life will have been for nothing.

Aspen and Banks are the cutest couple. He has to be one of the swooniest hockey players I've read in a long time - so sweet, so determined to take care of Aspen even though she resists for the longest time. And Aspen, my God she'd had a rough go of it but it had made her so strong and independent. I wanted to cry when it looked as if they weren't going to make it, but thankfully they took their baggage and threw it out the window. Aspen, Banks and their found family have me seriously excited for all their stories now. Rockstar Royal's story is next and it can't be here soon enough.

Icebreaker🏒

I’ve only recently discovered these two authors when I signed up for advanced copies of the Bang Brothers. I am sooooo excited to have found them and this story had a little bit of everything. Aspen and Banks were the hot couple and had chemistry galore. Banks brings with him a collection of friends that are family and there are some sweet and adorable moments as well as some funny laugh out loud ones🤣

I’m extremely excited for the next book in this series🤩 Hopefully we get more cameos from Frankie🥰

Icebreaker was a great start to a new series called the Gamebreakers series. The first book follows Aspen and Banks. Their story is the jumping off point to introduce all of the characters that may have books within the series. I enjoyed the premise of this book and felt it was well written.

Banks Christianson is a cinnamon bun

Kat Mizera and Elise Faber are two of my favourite authors, and when I heard they were joining forces and writing a brand new series together I was in. How could I not, individually their words keep me trapped in their stories, together they are magical. ICEBREAKER was a fantastic beginning the Gamebreakers series, a captivating read from beginning to end. It is a found family, protective hero, starting over, slowburn romance which was humourous, heartbreaking, sweet, and spicy. Bravo to the authors, their writing was seamless, it was impossible to tell where one author ended and the other began.

Two years ago Aspen Rockwell fled her family home to be her own person. She was tired of feeling unloved and controlled, but it's been a constant struggle, both emotionally and financially. She wants to be independent and not rely on anyone, whether it's her family or a man. Banks Christianson is Captain of the SoCal Vipers Hockey Team and in partnership with his four closest friends in The Sapphire Club, a gentleman's bar. Lately his form on the ice has been below par and he's worried about being traded, otherwise Banks is exactly where he wants to be in life. His winning smile and charm usually gets him what and who he wants, but neither work on Aspen, If anything she's under impressed by him.

I adored Aspen and Banks; they were such a terrific pairing. Their chemistry from the beginning sizzled and only grew hotter as time went on, their banter was brilliant, often quite amusing. While Aspen tried to push Banks away, he was determined to be there for her, support her and show her just how much she cared, even though he didn't want anything permanent with or, or did he? Aspen was reluctant for anything permanent because of the way in which she had been treated by men in her family. Both were carrying secrets relating to their pasts, secrets which could possibly ruin everything they were building together. Will their walls crumble or have they reinforced them too tightly?

ICEBREAKER made me constantly smile. Banks and his friends, Royal, Dash, and Atlas, were a wonderful group, a family you just want to be a part of. I adored Briar, Dash's sister, and little Frankie, they made Aspen feel welcomed, accepted, and finally loved. Being the first book in the series, it was fun meeting new characters and getting to know them a little. I loved the humour, camaraderie, support, encouragement, and love they gave and had for each other. Now to wait patiently for the next book, Heartbreaker.

A highly recommended read.

Banks is a professional hockey player and captain of the SoCal Vipers. He was traded for his scoring ability but has yet to score this season. Banks has been attending extra morning practices to try to get him out of his scoring funk. Aspen works for a cleaning crew that cleans the Viper's arena after games. The job is physically demanding, and her boss plays mental games with her. Running late for an early morning skate and without his key card to get into the arena, Banks runs into Aspen who is heading home but stands her ground and won't let him into the arena. Aspen is horrified and afraid she just lost her job when she realizes Banks is who he says he is. Banks and Aspen see each other again when Banks is at The Sapphire Club with his friends celebrating their dead friends, Colt's, birthday. Aspen is working as a bartender at The Sapphire Club. Banks doesn't recognize Aspen at first and makes a bet with his friends that he can score with Aspen. Aspen knows what Banks is up to and wants nothing with him. Banks doesn't let his friend's laughter or Aspen's shooting him down deter him. Can Banks break through Aspen walls and show her he is different from all the other men who have been in her life? Will Aspen accept a promotion at The Sapphire Club? How will Banks react when Aspen tells him she is pregnant when they are moving her into his house? Will Aspen kick her father to the curb when he wants to exploit her relationship with Atlas after learning she works for him at The Sapphire Club? How will Aspen react when she learns why Banks reacted the way he did when he learned she was pregnant? Can Banks' friends convince him that he needs man up for Aspen and their child? Will Banks finally score after sharing a pregame moment with Aspen? I loved Icebreaker by Elise Faber and Kat Mizera. Banks and Aspen are a great couple with amazing chemistry! I loved Royal, Atlas, Dash, Briar, and Mrs. X. I would highly recommend getting Icebreaker by Elise Faber and Kat Mizera. I cannot wait until Royal's book. I received an ARC copy of this book, and I am leaving my honest review.

Hartita me tienen.

Icebreaker is book 1 in the Gamebreakers series and what a way to start the series off.

Banks is a professional hockey player for the So Cal Vipers. He was traded to them the previous season for his scoring ability. However, last season he did not score up to his potential, in his eyes. And so far this season, he has yet to score.

Because of his performance on the ice, he has been going in for extra practices early in the mornings.

Aspen works at the arena where the Vipers play. She works with a team that cleans it after any event. It is a very demanding job physically. But her "boss" makes it a demanding job mentally with her games.

Their first run in happens as Aspen is leaving the arena and Banks is trying to get in, but he forgot his key card. Rabid raccoon makes its first appearance.

Their second meet up happens at The Sapphire Club, where Aspen is working as a bartender. What she does not know, is that the group of men in the back are the owners of the club. Bets are made between the men about Banks being able to score that night. Aspen wants nothing to do with it.

Their third meet up happens again at the arena as Aspen is leaving and Banks is coming in for an extra training session. She sneaks in to the stands to watch him. He sees her and is elated.

Throughout this book, so many things happen. A broken down car. Two managers terminated. A father showing up out of nowhere. Surprises abound and reactions are unexpected.

Throughout the book, we get glimpses of the four men and their history. Each has a story to tell and I am hoping we will find out more in each of the future books in this series. In addition is the missing man. And let us now forget about Briar and Frankie. And Mrs. X is a hoot. She is the best grandma a girl could ever ask for.

4.5 stars. Aspen, the female lead, left her rich controlling family when they tried to marry her off for business purposes, showing that they’d never respect her. Now working two jobs to make her way, she’s living a mostly isolated, but self-sufficient life.

Banks, the male lead, is a professional hockey player whose mother died giving birth to him. He and his close friends were best friends in college and they remain very close, especially after the death of one of them. But he’s also living a fairly isolated life.

When life situations start throwing Banks and Aspen together, Banks is immediately enthralled by Aspen, but she’s not interested in getting involved with a rich playboy.

Then, just as Aspen is almost convinced of Banks’ sincerity, the situation changes and Banks isn’t sure he can cope with their new reality…

This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a steamy, contemporary hockey romance. I appreciated Aspen’s staunch independence and enjoyed how she learned to mellow enough to appreciate assistance without giving up control. I enjoyed Banks’ commitment from very early on, and his dedication and perseverance to convincing Aspen of his long term interest. I appreciated the characters’ reality that included significant historical trauma that each needed to deal with. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the depth of emotions that the characters explored. I enjoyed the found family that Banks had and the joy he took he sharing them with Aspen. I adored that they surrounded both lead characters when they were struggling, caring for them equally. I adored this setting and character group and am waiting on tenterhooks for more!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

“I don’t want to be someone’s wake-up call, I want to be his first choice.”

4.5⭐️ At first I was like oh here we go another jock boy betting that he can get the girl with his other jock boy friends, so unoriginal. I was happy to see that this narrative got cleared up within the next chapter as I was getting ready to DNF that badboy. Then it came in with some heart and depth which I was most appreciative of.

I actually liked that he was struggling with his NHL game. Not that he was suffering per se, but more in the way that it was a contrast to all the other hockey romances I read where the MMC is so awesome and smashing it. It was nice to see some of the stress and pressure that NHL players experience played out on page and not just glossed over as being amazing and all encompassing. It added layers and intensity to the story which I loved seeing. It made it more genuine to me.

Okay I’m not gonna lie, I disliked the surprise pregnancy reveal and I really disliked how he responded to it. I get it, it’s linked to his trauma but man did it give me lots of feels and not the good kind. It gave me lots of icks and it took a bit of processing to get past this as it made me really angry. But I guess that’s the way you know you’re invested in the characters right? If you feel something for them when bad things happen.

All throughout this read I felt conflicted as I felt challenged a lot by the actions of the characters. On reflection I think that means I enjoyed it, cos I actually felt something towards it. A lot of the time I feel nothing and write a pretty standard review. But this one made me consider my feelings about books, not just my thoughts. I really enjoyed this one!

That meet-cute and the immediate hate to love was perfection. These two got off on the wrong foot, and it took a bit to overcome it.

My initial impression of Banks was that he was a walking red flag. I just did not like the way he talked to Aspen. That's a total me thing though. After a bit he grew on me, and I could see past that front he was putting on. Aspen had me a bit confused as well because I didn't know what she was withholding. I knew she was hiding something, and it felt like it took forever to be revealed.

That being said I fell hard for these two, as well as the friends. The found family that they had going was fantastic. I loved the friendships that were formed, and how they surrounded Aspen through everything that happened. The relationship between Aspen and Banks was quite the ride. They had their hurdles to work through, but once they did they were on fire. Speaking of fire...the office scene...epic. I also loved seeing Banks in protector mode.

Now here's the thing...When Aspen shared her news, I didn't like the way Banks responded/acted. That didn't sit right. Yes I get that he has a history, and a reason for feeling the way he did, but at the same point it was just not right. I tried not to let that truly influence my thoughts on the book though as it was so minor. Thankfully friends talked him through it all and helped him understand what was happening.

I am leaving Icebreaker with a question though surrounding the other bartender and waitress. What ever came from that? That was a storyline that was never wrapped up. So does it continue into the other stories?

Bring on Heartbreaker!

I'm All In!!

What a delightful kickoff to the Gamebreakers series! Kat Mizera and Elise Faber really nailed it with this first book. They not only made us fall for the main characters but also for their tight-knit friend group.

I’m usually not a fan of insta-love, but this one felt like a slow burn—at least on Aspen’s side—so I was cool with it. Banks is just too sweet to resist, and I knew Aspen wouldn’t be able to hold out for long. He’s definitely climbing the ranks on my book boyfriend list! Not only is he charming, but he’s also sensitive and incredibly sexy. Sure, he’s had his fun as a former pro hockey player, but he knows what matters. The moment he meets the fiery Aspen and her racoon key claws, all bets are off!

Aspen is equally relatable. She’s tough on the outside but really just wants to find her place in the world. After working her butt off in California, she’s not about to let some rich jerk push her around. I loved her attempts to play hard to get, but let’s be real—Banks was definitely the stronger player here.

We get a cute meet-cute followed by a whole lot of adorable moments. These two are just perfect together, so it’s a little mean I kept waiting for those past issues lurking in the background to stir things up. While their chemistry is fantastic, there’s definitely some baggage they need to unpack.

The book is well written, and I absolutely loved the friendship dynamics Banks has with his crew. They really embrace Aspen into their circle, and it’s just heartwarming. I can’t wait to see more stories unfold with this group, especially since the brooding Royal is up next!

I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a new series with two authors of hockey series I have enjoyed. This is a stand alone book and none of the previous authors series are connected to this story. While we start out in a hockey/sports romance, the next books get away from the sport.

This series characters are a group of guys who went to college together and were besties. They each went into careers in different paths. One of them ended up dying and the left behind friends honoring him by opening a nightclub in his honor. They are all partners in the business. All the guys are single and one has a sister who has a share in the club. The story starts on the night where they are celebrating their missing friend.

One of the guys in the club is named Atlas, and it drove me crazy because the female lead in this story is Aspen, and it was very distracting while reading to have two main characters with a name that starts with an A.

Aspen is down on her luck. She runs from one job to the next hoping to make enough money to support herself. Thats how she meets Bank. But she barely has time to eat never mind dating a guy.

But Banks is not just some guy. He cares and he was a sweetheart for a majority of the book. At close to the end he freaks out and I was not a fan. But up to that point he seemed like a catch. But if there is a message in this book, it is that we all have our own demons to fight. No one is perfect and we are all just trying to live life and try to make the best life we can with the time given to us.

Icebreaker by Kat Mizera and Elise Faber kicks off the Gamebreakers series with a story full of heart, humor, and plenty of chemistry.

This is Aspen and Banks' journey, starting with a memorable—and hilarious—meet-cute that quickly escalates into a complex, emotional romance. Aspen, running from a past that didn’t appreciate her, is trying to survive in Southern California, working odd jobs and hoping for a break. That’s when she meets Banks, a pro hockey player going through a rough patch.

Aspen is fierce, independent, and deserving of some happiness after her rough family history, and Banks proves to be just the person to offer her that and more. He’s patient and kind, though his own insecurities get the better of him at times. I appreciated how real both characters felt—they each have pasts that shape them and impact their relationship, creating a raw and authentic connection.

The story isn’t just about romance, though. It’s about found family, resilience, and the bonds of friendship. The supporting cast adds depth and charm, and I can’t wait to see more of them in future books, especially with all the intriguing subplots left open. Plus, that office scene? Unforgettable! 🔥

While Banks’ initial reaction to Aspen’s big news didn’t sit quite right, his journey to understanding made for a satisfying character arc. The authors blend fun, heat, and emotional moments in a way that kept me hooked. Overall, Icebreaker sets the stage for what looks to be an addictive new series that dives deep into relationships and second chances.

Can't wait to see what's next for this group! 🏒

When two exceptional hockey romance writers like Kat Mizera and Elise Faber team up, you know you’re in for a treat. Individually, they deliver heart-pounding, emotional stories that leave readers satisfied, but together? They craft an unforgettable series. Icebreaker (Book 1 in the Gamebreakers series) kicks off with a bang, delivering everything fans could hope for intense chemistry, heart-stopping romance, and plenty of passion.

Banks and Aspen’s story begins with a rocky misunderstanding, but it doesn’t take long for the sparks to fly. Banks knows Aspen is the one almost immediately, giving us swoon-worthy moments from the start. Aspen’s strength and determination to take control of her life make her the perfect match for Banks, whose tragic past tugs at your heartstrings. Their love story is fiery, passionate, and emotional, with a connection that leaps off the page.

What really makes this book stand out is the incredible supporting cast. Banks’ teammates and close-knit group of college friends form the backbone of this story, adding depth and warmth to the plot. Their bond, solidified by their shared ownership of The Sapphire Room, a bar they built together, is a refreshing layer that enhances the romance. This first book sets up the series beautifully, leaving readers already invested in these characters and eager for the next instalment. With a brilliant blend of hockey, friendship, and steamy romance, Icebreaker is a stellar start to what promises to be an extraordinary series.

I loved everything about Icebreaker. Ms. Faber and Ms. Mizera, two talented and must-read authors give us an entertaining, magnificent sports romance that sees two people who are strangers and with a little persuading, become lovers. This is the first book in the Gamebreakers series and I have a feeling all four books will be one that you will not want to miss reading.
Banks is a pro hockey player who falls hard, first and fast over Aspen, the girl next door. Aspen is trying to live her life away from her controlling family, by struggling and working two jobs. The one thing that she never thought was that a professional hockey player would be interested in her. Banks hasd an almost immediate attraction to Aspen. There was something about her that had his heart beating a little faster than the regular puck bunnies. The relationship that developed saw the two of them opening up about their past, the struggles that Apen had been dealing with and how Banks is a man who tells it like it is. The fact that the family that he has, not blood-related, pulls Aspen in and makes her feel like she is a part of them.
While reading this book I loved the way that Banks wanted the best for Aspen. He put her first and wanted to make sure she knew she was important. The funniest thing was Aspen wanted nothing to do with Banks and what she thought was his playboy rich ways.
I can't wait to see what these two talented authors have in store for us in Heartbreaker, book two in the series.

This was great! I recently read books in the Bang Brothers series from both these authors so was keen to check out this new series, and I loved the story, it was easy to read, it flowed and was well paced, and gave us a whole bunch of interesting characters to get to know and love.
Our main female character, Aspen, has left a controlling family where she was treated as an object and not a person, and despite having to leave all the trappings of wealth behind, is forging a life for herself. She's strong and sassy and fiercely independent and working two jobs when she first meets Banks.
Banks is one of a group of friends who we get to know in this book, and apart from his meet cute with a snarling Aspen, our first true introduction to him and his friends is at their club, celebrating the birthday of one of their friends they lost several years before.
There's strong themes of found family, and I loved the arc Aspen takes to learning to trust, as Banks perseverance breaks down her walls.
There's some moments of drama as these two fight for each other, but ultimately it's a boy meets girl, determined to make her open up and he falls in love first. It's sweet and heartwarming, but also hot and steamy.
For a sports romance, it's a pleasant surprise to know that the rest of the series won't play out in a locker room as Banks is the only hockey player amongst this group of men.
Looking forward to seeing where this series goes and the stories we get for these very different but very close friends.

I recently finished reading Icebreaker, the first book in the Gamebreakers series by Elise Faber and Kat Mizera, and I have to say, it was quite a delightful experience! This novel blends romance, humor, and sports drama in a way that really captivated me from the start.

The story revolves around Aspen and Banks, two characters whose chemistry is simply electric. I found myself rooting for them right away. The heartfelt storytelling is one of the highlights for me. The authors do an excellent job of balancing light-hearted moments with deeper emotional themes, which made me feel connected to the characters on a personal level. The exploration of found family and mistaken identity added layers to the plot that I truly appreciated.

The writing style is smooth and engaging; it’s impressive how seamlessly the two authors’ voices blend together. I was drawn into the narrative and found it hard to put the book down. The pacing felt just right, with enough twists to keep me on my toes without feeling rushed.

That said, I did notice that some of the plot points leaned into familiar romance tropes. While they were enjoyable, I sometimes wished for a bit more originality to elevate the story further.

Overall, Icebreaker was an enjoyable read that successfully combines romance and sports with relatable characters and an engaging plot. I’d give it a solid 4-star rating for its charm and emotional depth. If you’re a fan of hockey romance, I definitely recommend picking this one up!

Elise Faber and Kat Mizera score with ICEBREAKER (Gamebreakers #1). Captain of the Southern California Vipers Banks Christianson and his closest friends/business partners Atlas, Royal, and Dash get together to honor the anniversary of the passing of their friend Colt. While he is at their club, The Sapphire Room, Banks is intrigued by their new bartender, Aspen Rockwell. Aspen makes it clear she is not interested, but Banks is persistent in winning her over.

I have been a fan of both Elise Faber and Kat Mizera. They collaborate well together. They did an excellent job with the first book in the Gamebreakers series. The Sapphire Room’s signature drink is called a Gamebreaker, hence the name of the series.

I like Aspen and Banks. Aspen past relationships have not been great. She has no desire to get into a relationship. Plus, she is hiding from her past. Banks had been in a hockey slump. He first meets Aspen at the arena. They did not hit it off. I enjoyed their banter. Banks is a good guy. I enjoyed his quest to win Aspen over. The characters face interesting situations throughout the novel.

Elise Faber and Kat Mizera did a fantastic job with ICEBREAKER (Gamebreakers #1). It is skillfully written and entertaining. I am looking forward to book two, HEARTBREAKERS. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Aspen has fled to the west coast to escape her family. She's now working two jobs to make ends meet. It's at her job that she runs into Banks, a very handsome, very infuriating man who refuses to leave her alone. Banks is the captain of the Vipers hockey team and the owner of the club where Aspen works. From the moment he meets Aspen, he's determined to have her. When he learns why she's moved to SoCal, he's determined that she belongs with him and he'd do anything to keep her safe.

Icebreaker is the first book in a brand new romance series about a group of four best friends. This was a phenomenal start to the series! Aspen and Banks were two strong MCs who started out with a not so meet cute. Aspen had hardened herself to protect her heart from future hurt and heartbreak. She was so very wary of Banks and was closed off, yet he still kept showing up where she was trying to get her to let him in. Banks wanted to do nothing but to care for and protect Aspen while also getting to know her. He loved her spitfire spirit. Once Aspen finally opens up to Banks, their connection is everything. Their story is emotional and sexy.
I love the huge focus on found family with Banks and his four best friends. His friends were a huge part of this story, and I loved that so much. I can't wait to read each of their books.
