Shaolin Trips

Rate this book
Gene Ching collects over a decade and a half worth of research on Shaolin Temple. Ching documents Shaolin s convoluted journey from post-Cultural Revolution ruins to the global Buddhist juggernaut it has become today. Along the way, Ching recounts his personal trips to Shaolin, replete with cultural challenges, comic catastrophes and the occasional flash of enlightenment. With dozens of profiles of outstanding Shaolin monks and masters, Shaolin Trips reveals the stories behind the robes from the perspective of a Shaolin disciple and Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine s Associate Publisher. Fully indexed. 669 pages. Fascinating for the general reader, Shaolin Trips is a must for the martial artist. Just finished the personal narrative part of this book, and it’s absolutely wonderful. Gene’s knowledge of Shaolin is so deep, and a unique perspective.

His writing is also fantastic, he’s like a Hunter S. Thompson of martial arts! Full of wit, psychedelic insight, evocative descriptions of Songshan mountain/China/the Bay Area/dog shit on a painting, and humor, this book has really evolved the way I view my martial practice.

Written for those who practice kung fu and buddhism, but can be enjoyed by anyone.
