Most people know Billy Graham the preacher. Many know Billy Graham the author. In this remarkable book, Graham reveals a personal side that few have seen before. For thirty years, Billy Graham and David Frost fascinated television audiences with their conversations about God, the Bible, and Graham’s decades-long ministry. Frost asked the questions that thousands of viewers wanted to ask. Graham answered them with authenticity and grace. Along the way, Graham provided insight into life as an evangelist, a Christian father and grandfather, and a public figure in a changing culture. Most of all, Graham’s words show what it means to live out your beliefs—whether you speak to millions of people around the world or simply want to live faithfully at home and work. With a chronology of Graham’s life, a preface from Frost, and a foreword from his grandson, Tullian Tchividjian, this weaving of stories, interviews, and reflections will inspire you to respond to God’s call with no reserve.Sir David Frost, who died in 2013, was an English journalist, comedian, and television host. Known for his history-making interviews with top political figures, Frost is the author of several books, including his autobiography. His famous interviews with Richard Nixon formed the basis for the Oscar-nominated film Frost/Nixon.
Sir David Paradine Frost, OBE is a British journalist, comedian, writer and media personality, best known for his serious interviews with various political figures, the most notable being Richard Nixon. Since 2006, he has been hosting the weekly programme Frost Over the World on Al Jazeera English. He was portrayed by actor Michael Sheen opposite Frank Langella's Richard Nixon in the 2006 Peter Morgan stage play Frost/Nixon, and in Ron Howard's subsequent 2008 film adaptation.
Whilst living in Gillingham, Kent, he was taught in the Bible Class of the Sunday School at his father's church by David Gilmore Harvey, and subsequently started training as a Methodist Local Preacher, which he did not complete. At Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree in English, he edited a student newspaper, Varsity, and a literary magazine, Granta. He was also secretary of the famous Footlights Drama Society, which included actors such as Peter Cook and John Bird.
After leaving university, he became a trainee at Associated-Rediffusion and worked for Anglia Television. Frost was chosen by writer and producer Ned Sherrin to host a pioneering satirical programme called That Was The Week That Was, alias TW3. This caught the wave of the satire boom in 1960s Britain and became a popular programme. A 30-minute American version of TW3 featuring Frost ran on NBC from 10 January 1964 to May 1965.
Frost fronted a number of programmes following the success of TW3, including its immediate successor, Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life. More notable was The Frost Report (1966-1967), which launched the television careers of John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. He signed for Rediffusion, the ITV weekday contractor in London, to produce a "heavier" interview-based show called The Frost Programme. Guests included Sir Oswald Mosley and Rhodesian premier Ian Smith. His memorable dressing-down of insurance fraudster Emil Savundra was generally regarded as the first example of "trial by television" in the UK. On 20 and 21 July 1969, during the British television Apollo 11 coverage, he presented David Frost's Moon Party for LWT, a ten-hour discussion and entertainment marathon from LWT's Wembley Studios, on the night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
In 1963 a tribute to the recently assassinated President John F. Kennedy on That Was the Week That Was had seen Frost's fame spread to the United States. His 1970 TV special Frost on America featured guests such as Jack Benny and Tennessee Williams. From 1969 to 1972, Frost kept his London shows and fronted The David Frost Show on the Group W (U.S. Westinghouse Corporation) television stations in the United States. In 1977, he met US President Richard Nixon in a series of interviews for American television.
During the 1990s, he presented the panel game Through the Keyhole, which featured a long running partnership with Loyd Grossman. After transferring from ITV, his Sunday morning interview programme Breakfast with Frost ran on the BBC from January 1993 until 29 May 2005. The programme originally began in this format on TV-am in September 1983 as Frost on Sunday until the station lost its franchise at the end of 1992.
As of November 2006, he works for Al Jazeera English, presenting a live weekly hour-long current affairs programme, Frost Over the World, which started when the network launched in November 2006. The programme has regularly made headlines with interviewees such as Tony Blair, President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, Benazir Bhutto and President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua.
Frost was instrumental in starting up two important ITV franchises: London Weekend Television in July 1968 and as one of the Famous Five who launched TV-AM in February 1983.
Frost is the only person to have interviewed eight British prime ministers serving between 1964 and 2010 (Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, James Callaghan, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron) and
In this book, Frost did a great job categorizing excerpts and quotes from his interviews with Billy Graham over the years.
I enjoyed Graham’s honest and informed answers to even the toughest of Frost’s questions. We see that Graham’s sole mission in life is to preach the Gospel through the responses logged here.
I am very grateful to netgalley.com for the opportunity to read this book. As with all books I read, I review and comment about them in general terms. Billy Graham was a influential evangelist in the lives of my parents and I was able to hear him preach in 1973 and at Mission England c 1988 I think. Over the years he gave a number of interviews with David Frost and the two became good friends. This book is a product of those TV shows an attempt to record and put in printed form their conversations and Dr Graham's changing emphasis on ministry and views on issues that trouble christians and non-christians alike. It is a fascinating read and shows the impact of life given to ministry, regrets and new priorities. I was pleased to read of consistency and a high moral integrity and wondered how we had reached the speculation that after death we could serve God across the solar system visiting other planets. As someone who also enjoyed the career of David Frost I found this book a perfect fit and a worthwhile read to reflect and look forward to later life with fresh optimism.
I have always admired and been fascinated with Billy Graham having had grown up knowing that he is and probably will always be the greatest evangelist of all time. Hearing his voice there is a quality to it that compels a person to know Jesus. When I had a chance to read this book via NetGalley I was very excited and interested because of the format. David Frost writes this book based upon his interviews with Billy Graham and he really asks some hard questions.
I learned quite a bit about this man of God that I probably wouldn't find in an average biography because David Frost pushes past the personality and gets to the heart of the man. I would have given more stars if the book was even more in depth and more into Billy Graham's spirituality rather than trying to get a political and social view.
*I received a free ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the book to read if you want a general overview of Billy Graham's public life. David Frost interviewed him frequently and developed a personal friendship with the popular evangelist. Full of anecdotes and insightful observations, this will give you a glimpse into the man God used to communicate His Word to over two billion people.
In light of his recent death, I read this book offering a series of interviews done by David Frost. They offer a glimpse into the life, thoughts and opinions of Mr. Graham. This book helped to substantiate the books I have already read by Grant Wacker and Billy Graham himself on his life.
A conversation with Billy Graham, from the controversial author and interviewer. The message here was consistent with other books by Billy Graham, on some cases, this could be the essence of what Billy Graham view on evangelism and his life principles.
I really liked this book a lot. I watched Billy Graham on television almost every time it was on. My family also enjoyed watching. This book is very good and everyone needs to read it.
I learned more about Billy Graham than I expected. He was a great preacher & person. This book helps you to realize that if you didn't already know it.
In the last two years I have had the privilege of reading and reviewing two books written by Dr. Billy Graham - The Reason for My Hope: Salvation and Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well. Judging by the number of reviews on Amazon, I came to the conclusion that they were well-received. But I was shocked by the tepid response to Ruth and Billy Graham: The Legacy of a Couple by Hanspeter Nüeschas which was released on January 7, 2014 and Thank You, Billy Graham: A Tribute to the Life and Ministry of Billy Graham by Jerushah Armfield, Aram Tchividjian and, Boz Tchividjian which was released as recently as March 1, 2014.
Billy Graham: Candid Conversations with a Public Man by David Frost is another truly fascinating portrait of America's pastor which the author meticulously gleaned from a vast storehouse of information covering more than thirty years of television interviews with Rev. Billy Graham. This is an enormously interesting and satisfying exercise as it was originally intended only for television audience. But after reviewing the tapes of his shows the author realized it was a record which should be put between the covers of a book as it offers one of the most complete pictures of the preacher's life and ministry. What makes this book especially unique is the fact that it is mosaic of evangelical Christianity, as seen through the eyes of the man who has preached now for 70 years and has delivered the gospel message to more people face-to-face than anyone in history and has ministered on every continent of the world.
Billy Graham: Candid Conversations with a Public Man by David Frost is meticulously sorted and compiled into ten insightful chapters, covering Faith, Family and Marriage, Politics, Preaching, Evangelism and the Bible, Pain and Suffering, Presidents, Sin and Temptation, Moral and Social Issues, Billy Graham on himself and End Times and Heaven. You may not have watched David Frost's television shows but you'll get to read him as Billy Graham answers Frost pointed questions on the subjects covered in the book.
Good Overview Of Billy Graham's Life And His Thoughts
There are a few individuals in America that have had this much impact on so many people around the world over such a long period of time. Graham was a friend to ministry leaders, political leaders and world leaders. In fact, Graham has appeared on Gallup's list of Most Admired People 57 times -- more than any other person in the world.
This book outlines several interviews that took place between David Frost and Billy Graham over 30 years. It provides a good snapshot of who Billy Graham is, some of the things he accomplished, and his beliefs across a wide range of issues. It also tells the story of how he evolved and matured in his faith and his style over the years. The interviews cover a range of topics including his relationship with many presidents (including Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush), his thoughts about civil rights, women's rights, family, parenting, marriage, moral issues and more. Billy led a very busy and accomplished life. In 1954, he led a London Crusade and preached every night for three months and later did a New York Crusade in Madison Square Garden without a break and preached for 16 weeks straight. It takes enormous energy to do that and I can't imagine anyone able to keep that schedule today. Graham became a trusted advisor and friend to many.
Even though there are a lot of different topics covered, I am still longing to hear one more interview that can uncover some of the deeply personal stories of Graham's experiences, conversations and frustrations. While he was a very public man, he was also very private and surely has many more interesting stories to tell.
A complimentary e-copy of this book was provided to me by David C Cook in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
Transcription of a number of interviews with Billy Graham. As such, one can see the consistency of his ministry and His rock solid faith in Jesus. A couple good quotes:
"No one presented the gospel of Jesus Christ as clearly or as straightforwardly as Dr. Graham. He believed his message totally, offered it without apology, and stated unequivocally how urgent he thought it was for people to accept Christ— now."
" 'How do you suggest that Christians get ready for the hard times ahead?' Billy’s answer was classic Billy Graham: 'The most important thing we can do is grow in our relationship to Christ.' "
"If we have not learned to trust God’s Word when times are easy, we will not trust his Word when we face difficulties."
"What he says is his greatest fear: 'That I’ll do something or say something that will bring some disrepute on the gospel of Christ before I go. And I want the Lord to remove me before I say something or do something that would embarrass God.' "
"I deserve judgment, and I deserve hell, because of my sin. Because all of us are sinners. We’re rebels against God. I’m going to be in heaven, and the password to heaven is going to be the grace of God, the fact that God loves me and He says, “I give you eternal life as a gift.” It’s free. And I’m going there by the grace of God in Christ."
Just finished reading Billy Graham: Candid Conversations With a Public Man by David Frost.
I learned some interesting things about Reverend Billy Graham that I didn't know.
Some of the questions that are answered in the book...
Learn how and when he accepted Christ as his personal savior. How long did it take him to ask Ruth out for the first date? And how long before he fell in love with her? What do the Graham Family have on Christmas morning as part of their tradition? If the Lord hadn't chosen for him to be an evangelist what line of work would Reverend Graham have went into? Why does God allow pain and suffering? What temptations if any does the devil use on Billy Graham? How would you describe Heaven? And Hell? Do you think there will turn out to be life on other planets? Plus many more questions and answers.
I was amazed at some of Reverend Billy Graham's answers. A very thought provoking book. I enjoyed it tremendously.
I received an ARC of this from NetGallery in exchange for my review rather it be good or bad.
I know very little of Billy Graham - which is bad. He was one of the most influential Christians of the 20th century. So I was grateful to pick this book up, to get a little insight and education on him, and his views. So on the plus side - I think the book did give me a taster of his thoughts and ideas.
But I suppose that transcripts of interviews will never be as exciting as the interview itself (one case where the movie is better than the book?), and I found the book quite disjointed and surprisingly hard to follow. Similar (or the same - I wasn't always sure) quotes were used when describing Graham's views on certain topics, so that you felt you were reading the same discussions rehashed a few times. I'm not sure whether the hard-copy will have a different layout, but the Kindle layout didn't help the flow of the chapters, and overall I found the book didn't flow or seem to go anywhere. It felt like a bit of a data-dump. I'm sure there are a number of books on Graham, and I think I should go to them rather (or watch the interviews on Youtube).
Billy Graham speaks with humble honesty about his own faith in God. His love for everyone no matter what, and his reasoned approach to the Bible and to important issues in society promotes greater insight and understanding. He lights a clear and simple path for the rest of us to follow.
Absolutely loved. I so admire Billy Graham and what he has always stood for. I so enjoyed the aspects of what he believes in all subjects of life. So many things to ponder, but yet a simple truth.
I also believe this book came along at a time in my life that I was supposed to hear these things.
What a true blessing sums it up.
There is a question frequently asked, if you had the chance to have dinner with one famous person who would it be. I've always wished for Billy Graham, but dinner would not be long enough. Mr. Frost has had that blessing and now shares with us.
I received this ebook from NetGalley.com and David C. Cook Publishers for my honest review.
For starters I love Billy Graham so I knew I would like this book but I loved it! I am not used to reading books where its about interviews but this book really was interesting from the start to the end. This ebook gave us interviews from David Frost and Billy Graham when Billy just started out until his last interview in the 90's. If you are a fan of Billy Graham's I think you will enjoy this book. There was so much I have learned about Billy Graham in this ebook and I would love to read more! I will re-read this ebook from time to time.
It was great way to know more the heart of this incredible man of God that has inspired believers all over the world for decades.
I liked how sure He is about the calling of the Lord in his life. I mean, his position is basically this: "I'm a evangelist, I could do anything else but this what I should do and what God blessed me to do". That's so great! Very inspiring.
Compiled in conversations between the two men from 1964 -1997, this collection of quotes from both Billy Graham and David Frost is enlightening. Frost was able to get Dr. Graham to speak about himself in ways he would not have in his own books. Consequentially, we learn about the private thoughts of a 20th century icon from another 20th century icon who knew how to get people to reveal themselves.
The book included excerpts from numerous interviews David Frost did with Billy Graham through several decades. The men were great friends, and that showed in their conversations. I found some of Billy Graham's opinions different from what I would have expected. But the most important thing that he always emphasized in interviews as well as in his preaching: Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation and we are saved by grace, not by our own works.
I am so pleased that I received the opportunity to read this book via a free kindle offer. It was interesting to see what Billy had to say on various topics, and I liked the way that the book was put together. A quick but fulfilling read. Billy is extremely consistent in his beliefs and his message. A truly remarkable servant of the Lord.
It was refreshing to again read of conversations that David Frost had with Billy Graham. Billy Graham has had one focus in his life - to honor God. He did and has been a model for us all.
I really enjoyed reading and learning about Billy Graham's life. It was seamlessly pieced together with over four decades of interviews with Sir David Frost.
This is a great book with a lot of interviews with Billy Graham. It shows the evolution of the great knowledge and dedication of a great preacher and evangelist.
