Pranking my horrible boss with a random customer? Brilliant idea. Developing a massive crush on said customer? Disastrous.
I've got my life mapped finish nursing school, give my son the stable life he deserves, and absolutely do NOT let any man derail my plans. I've worked too hard to rebuild after my ex walked out.
So when Milo Tate—the charming stranger from my impulsive prank—walks through my new workplace door six months later as my boss's brother, I know exactly what to keep my distance.
But Milo has other ideas. Secret letters. Helping me with my baby boy. A smile that makes me forget every reason I'm supposed to stay single.
And the more time we spend together, the harder it gets to remember why I built these walls in the first place. Can I trust that some love stories don't end in heartbreak—or will protecting my heart mean missing the one man worth the risk?
Just a Distraction is a swoony, slow-burn clean romance with workplace shenanigans, a single mom determined to protect her heart, and a golden retriever hero who falls first and hardest. It's part of the seven-book, complete Tate Brothers series!
Deb Goodman’s obsession with the written word started at age three, when she realized the old-timey newsprint wallpaper in her family’s bathroom had actual words on it. The only problem? By the time she learned to read a couple of years later, the wallpaper had been replaced with something else—boring, non-worded wallpaper—and to this day, she still doesn’t know what it said.
Now, she and her husband and four children live in Utah. They love sports, music, and doing slightly insulting, pretend voices for their little shorkie, Mavis.
Deb writes funny, small-town romance that you won’t need to shield your kids’ eyes from. Billionaires, friends-to-more, enemies-to-more, cowboys, fake relationships…there’s something for everyone here!
Writing lovey dovey books comes naturally to Deb since, to her, there’s nothing better than reading and writing about how two people fall in love.
Favorite Quote: “I’m not a prince. I don’t come from a perfect family. We have so many problems you have no idea about. Rose, I’m just me. I’m a man who feels a strong connection to an incredible woman.”
I’m gonna be so sad when the Tate Brothers series comes to an end! They just keep getting better, and Milo and Rose’s story was no different! 😍
The swing set incident! 😂 The notes back and forth! Anytime Milo interacted with Callum! 😍🥰
I cannot wait to see what Deb does with Benson’s story next! Thank you to the author for the advance copy, all thoughts are my own.
Have you ever had whiplash? I have, and it isn't fun. But I'm not talking about physical whiplash (though I can attest to the fact that physical whiplash is also miserable). I'm talking emotional.
Rose gave me emotional whiplash through almost this whole book. Honestly, I had a hard time liking her. But Milo. He's a good one, I tell ya. He understood her needs-well, I wouldn't say her needs, but desires-and respected them.
In the end, I liked Rose a whole lot better!
~My thanks to the author for an e-copy of this book. No positive review was required.~
“Somewhere in between walking through the automatic doors of this little grocery store and standing next to the marinated artichokes, I know exactly what I want.”
The Tate Brothers series solidly has my heart, but this youngest brother’s story is my absolute favorite. Unlike Milo, who is a closet author, I don’t have the words to express just how much this story resonated with me.
Rose is a single mom living in a completely opposite world from Milo, but when he helps her play a prank on her awful boss, a spark of attraction and interest ignites. Months later, their worlds collide again and this time, there are casualties of the heart.
The Summer of Rose and Milo grasped my heart and never let go. I was stunned by the instantaneous connection these two had and the easy way they fell head-over-heels (right alongside yours truly), knowing it would come to an end. Little toddler Callum stole my heart with his chubby cuteness and every page of this tale held a sense of foreboding and a sensation of true love and swoon. Rose only wants to change the unfortunate patterns of her family–she’s strong and has the determination to do so, while Milo just wants to be recognized for who and what he truly is. Seeing them meshed together, consistent and concrete in their dreams and realities, spoke to my soul. I couldn’t get enough of this bittersweet love story and become their biggest cheerleaders.
Letter writing, guessing a middle name, Thorin the golden retriever, fantasy books, secret identity, close knit family, settling into a charming routine, swoon-filled kisses, and more made this one an unforgettable story.
Content: single mom; mild+ romance (make-outs)

Just a DISTRACTION (Tate Brothers Book #6) by: Deb Goodman @debgoodmanwrites
-I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
~It was supposed to be one night, where Rose spontaneously enlists a super hot customer to play a prank on her cranky boss, it seems like the perfect, momentary distraction from my life’s focus…
“You don’t have to have everything all figured out.”
-Just a Distraction is a cute “he falls first,” different worlds, single mom story with all of the swoon and none of the spice! It’s a story where dear characters learn that letting someone help carry the load is better than trying to do it all as oneself. It’s a story of not letting go of one’s dreams and making the most of things when life goes differently than one planned. It’s a story about realizing, discovering, and holding to what is about what’s most important, and that there can be happiness amid the hard, and that together is better than not at all. I loved watching characters stay true to their dreams and not giving up! There is such a wonderful blend of humor, low angst, and tender moments of both sweetness, and depth to the dear characters and within this story! I loved seeing characters be able to let go of their fears and worries, have fun, and the journey to something more lasting and fulfilling! Definitely a cute story that emphasizes the importance of respect, patience, understanding, and love that is worth the read as is the sweet series, that it’s part of! 🙌🏻📚🩷
“You and Callum are the most important things to me. Everything else is a distraction from you.”
•Content: being verbally abused/mistreated, being used, mild violence situation, baby out of wedlock (running in the family), being discouraged by family members, feelings of intimidation, mentions of nursing bra/weening from nursing, stuck in a baby seat at park and needing help to get out, no language, kisses only.
“It’s okay to just be you.”
-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“You are a harmless canopy. You’ve parched my thirst. You are my everything.”
In Denver, Rose is a single mother devoted to her precious baby boy, Callum. Rose scored well on the nursing entrance exam and earned a scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina. This fall, nothing can postpone her dream of becoming a nurse. Rose can no longer defer her scholarship. Could there be a distraction?
Milo Tate, the youngest in a large family of brothers, faces a pivotal job decision. Family expectations as a Tate fill him with inner conflict between two paths: working at his brother Sebastian's thriving resort company, Tate International, or joining his father's firm, Foundations Financial. With all his brothers already committed to Sebastian's company, Milo feels the pressure of being the only one yet to make that leap. However, Milo feels a sense of responsibility toward his father. Yet, despite the expectations, neither of these choices aligns with his true passion—writing fantasy novels.
I adored Rose and Milo as individuals and as a potential couple from the moment they met. Their story, told from each perspective, offered insight into their kind, caring, thoughtful, and hardworking qualities. Each character genuinely hopes for the fulfillment of the other's dream.
This novel can easily be read as a stand-alone, as I did. With this introduction to the author’s writing, I want to read all the stories of the Tate Brothers.
Just A Distraction by Deb Goodman is the 6th book in her Tate Brothers Series, but it can be read as a standalone. this book is told from a dual POV, following Rose and Milo. Rose is a single mom who waitresses at an Italian restaurant that her baby's father's family owns. he makes her life miserable and wants nothing to do with his son, and Rose can not wait to get away from him and go to nursing school to make a better life for her son. she enlists a hot customer, Milo, to play a prank on her boss/ex. after hearing the way Rose's boss talks to her, Milo wants to help and maybe even get to know Rose better. Rose allows herself a one night distraction with Milo that lands him in the emergency room. Six months later, at her new hotel cleaning job, Milo walks in after she never expected to see him again. Determined to not give up her dreams for a man, she tries to stay away. Milo is the ultimate cinnamon roll MMC. He falls first and falls hard. the way he is willing to do anything just to be in Rose's life and willing to follow her rules is totally swoon-worthy. All the characters are great and amazing. I can not wait to read more from Deb!

I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
Ahhh! I absolutely adored this book! This is the best single mom romance I have read in a long time. Once Milo and Rose reconnected I knew I was going to have a hard time putting this book down, and I was right!
Here are some of the moments I loved: - Milo's instant protectiveness - The prank - "Gloria" - Note writing - The Summer of Rose and Milo - Rose's determination to break the cycle her family is in - Mutual love of books
The romance is completely clean, and kept to kisses only. I'll be reading more of Deb Goodman's books in the future! Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy of this book. A review was not required.
This was actually my first Tate brothers book. Now I want to read all the others.
Rose is a fighter. She’s strong. She’s independent. She’s had everything stacked against her, but she keeps pushing through and rising above. Family members kept trying to discourage her, but she stayed strong in her dreams.
Milo is suave and charming, but in a sweet way. He’s gone for Rose from the moment he sees her. Milo is from a completely different world. He’s led a privileged life, but he has a secret dream he’s worried his family won’t approve of.
I loved the instant connection between Rose and Milo. Their first meeting was so fun. He’s 100 percent supportive and protective of Rose from the get go. They are able to let go of their fears and worries and have fun together and I loved their journey so much!
And when he finds out about Callum….heart melting.
Some things I loved: 💜The swings 🤣🤣 💜The notes 💜Callum 💜Gloria 💜His middle name
This was so good that I sped right through this. I couldn’t get enough. The resolution was so satisfying!!
Thank you to Deb Goodman for the copy. All opinions are my own.
Just a Distraction is a clean, delightful, single mother, romantic comedy. I have loved every one of the Tate Brothers' books and this one is just awesome. Rose has been fighting for her dreams all her life. She is determined to overcome the problematic relationships of her mother and her siblings. She is feisty and a go-getter; the first in her family to graduate college. Milo comes from the privileged Tate family so his background is nothing like Sophie's. But his heart harbors a dream of being a writer, not the family business. I do not want to say much more about the plot - no spoilers here. Rose's son Callum is a darling. It is so swoony how well Milo interacts with Callum. This well written book begins with Milo helping Rose prank her boss/baby daddy. It is really funny. Six months later Rose ends up as the head housekeeper at the same resort Milo is working. The entire book is just the best as Rose has to learn it is okay to share her burdens and Milo has to learn that maybe you can be the different one in the family. In the end, Ms. Goodman wraps up everything perfectly! I did not put it down once I started reading.
Never have I ever read a romcom that’s taken me on such a wild ride of emotions!! I was completely invested in the characters and really just want to go reread all the books in the series!!
Cute and sweet. Just a little angst. Fun meet-cute. I loved this Tate Brothers book. I've loved the whole series really. I always look forward to the next one. But we are quickly running out of brothers. I adored seeing Milo with Rose's son. Heart melting. Like if you sigh heavy when you see a single guy play sweetly with another person's child then be prepared to swoon. Milo is swoon worthy. Rose is a good mom and she and Milo have some fun banter. But she is carrying some pretty heavy baggage that she just can't get rid of until the end with their happily-ever-after. She finally sees that letting someone help carry the load is better than trying to do it all herself. I felt sorrow for Milo as she worked on learning life's lesson.
This was another enjoyable read in the Tate Brothers series. Love it.
Sex: out of wedlock baby who is over a year at start of book Language: no Violence: a bit
Milo was always the baby brother even after college and his “older and wiser” brothers had a hard time seeing him as grown up. They would have an even harder time accepting his little secret. Rose came from a totally different life, where her family expected underachievement and couldn’t understand her determination to be a nurse. They had all had babies without marriage and were very jaded over relationships. Rose was determined to get out of the cycle and nothing could stop her- even a great guy like Milo. This was like pulling teeth sometimes to get Rose to accept and acknowledge her feelings and Milo definitely fell first and harder. He was amazing with her little guy Callum and took right to fatherhood. This finishes up the original brothers stories but they found out they had a bonus brother that Milo actually connects with over their love of fantasy and we get his story next. Clean.
I’m such a sucker for the Tate Brothers and Milo is a dream!!
When Milo meets Rose at his favorite Italian restaurant and ends up in cahoots with her to get back at her boss/ex boyfriend, he doesn’t intend to spend the evening with her and certainly doesn’t plan on never getting her out of his mind!
Rose is a single mom, is working for her ex, and is looking forward to going to nursing school. She is dedicated to being an amazing mom and has zero plans to ever fall in love again!
I loved this story so much! I loved how strong and independent Rose was and what a good mom she was! I loved how caring Milo was and how quickly he bonded with baby Callum! These two had their ups and downs, and I loved their journey to happiness!!
This is the sixth book in the Tate brother's series and i must admit it certainly doesn't disappoint. Rose is an independent woman who has to fight for everything but never gives up which has given her a strong personality. Some of her family try to pull her down but she just keeps proving her dreams are worth fighting for. Milo is the complete opposite he's suave, charming and has lived a privileged life. But he has a secret he keeps hidden as he knows his family wouldn't approve. Being a single mom Rose puts her son Callum first and he's a real charmer. When these two are brought together the chemistry is there from the beginning. Can they help each other overcome their insecurities and find a hea. I've loved reading this series and can't wait to see what's next from Deb
Their Long and Winding Road to Happiness - This is an exhilarating instalove romance about two people who are intensely attracted to each other, but decide to maintain a platonic relationship, as they had different life plans. However, fate brings them back to each other again, where their relationship blossoms into dating with a condition. Unfortunately, they both realised after parting ways that they couldn’t stay away and finally acknowledge their feelings for each other, so they could get a chance at a future together. You will enjoy reading this romance story and be happy to recommend it.
I received an advanced copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the sixth book in the Tate brothers series. These can be read as a standalone but have recurring characters. This book’s Tate brother is the youngest Milo. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book as I wasn’t sure when Milo would show up and it was a fun surprise. Rose the main female character is a strong single mom struggling to keep everything together. Little Callum is the cutest! She has goals and is afraid Milo will be a distraction. Milo is a persistent Tate brother who just knows they will be perfect together despite their differences. Their story might be my favorite of them all.
Milo and Rose are a great couple and have a good story. Rose is a single mom with goals for her future and that of her baby. Her ex boyfriend and boss is making her work on her birthday so she convinces a good looking customer to help her with a prank on her boss. That customer was Milo he had noticed Rose numerous times before when he had come to this restaurant but had never spoken with her. Months later they meet again when he discovers she is also working for his brother. I advise you pick up this book for a fun and quick read. You will not be disappointed.
Rose is a sweet girl who had to overcome some obstacles in her plans to become a nurse. When she meets Milo, they connect instantly.
I loved reading about Rose & Milo and watching them both grow in their own ways. Learning so much about themselves from each other. I was so excited for Milo when his desired career panned out. Even more giddy when Rose finally caves and chases him down.
From hilarious moments involving the fire department to heartfelt moments with Milo helping out Rose; you will be immersed in this story. A heartfelt feel good story with some humor.
Milo and Rose are just the perfect pair. During a solo dinner, Milo helps Rose play a harmless prank on her ex. This turns into a night neither will ever forget. Rose is a single mom and trying to go to nursing school. She says they can never see each other again…until they are reunited months later.
My favorite part was the love letters they sent each other.
Tropes: He falls first Single mom Workplace romance Meddling families Communicates via letters
This whole series has been great. Siblings are the best and the worst, all at the same time sometimes. Milo and his brothers and Rose and her sisters make for some funny discussions. Milo and Rose's relationship, along with her young son and dog, are just so adorable. The whole book is like a warm hug, even through some of their more trying times. Beautiful ending. I am looking forward to the next book.
“I won’t ask you to uproot your life, Milo.” “I know. I’m just saying that it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for me to relocate to the Chapel Hill resort, too, if it came to that. I can’t pretend I wouldn’t love to see where things could go between us. And I can’t pretend that getting letters from you and seeing you and spending time with you and Callum aren’t the best moments of my day.” “That’s a lot of best moments of your day.” “If you’re around, it’s all considered the best.”
This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.
Both main characters have issues from their early life affecting their current relationship. I think it's wonderful that they actually talk about it their issues, even if they still hang on to them.
I love how strong the love for family was seen from all of the characters we meet in this story.
It’s a Must Read, Get ready to fall for Milo’s story, his funny encounter with Rose. We also follow the Tate family, Milo’s brothers and their wife’s, this story doesn’t disappoint, I laughed & yes I cried this love story is filled with so much emotional moments, some heartbreaking and some heartwarming ones. Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy.
Loved this one so much! A ‘he falls first’ and single mom-favorites of mine! Adored Milo & Rose together. He is so sweet with her and understanding of her struggles. Loved him with Callum too!
4.5/5 🚨TW: being verbally abused/mistreated, being used + discouraged by her family, feeling intimidated 🚨CW: mentions of nursing bra & also breast (but don't worry it's because she was having a newborn)

They met for the first time and he protected her from her ex and then they lost contact and Rose had been on Milo's mind ever since then. After six months, they meet again only to found out that she works with his brother. Feelings for her came back but she seemed to be pushing him away. Will he be able to win her heart? Read Just a Distraction to find out!!
Review Milo is just the sweetest. He helps Rose so much, protects her, stood up for her and also, he gets along with her son, Callum so well. Love that they both love reading so much and love their flirting and also trying to guess his middle name so much. Their letters to each other are so sweet and cute at the same time. He respected her boundaries and understands. They slowly got to know each other and also opened up to each other. They both encourage and support each other to go on with each other dreams though in the relationship they are pushing and pulling. Their sweet date and the moments together with Callum is just so adorable. This book made me cry, smile, laugh and at times frustrated (can’t spoil it read then you will know it).
I was gifted complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own. Thanks @debgoodmanwriter for the ARC.
This is the 6th book of Tate Brothers Series. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series. It will be an interesting one too.
You can buy this book from Amazon and it’s available on KU.
This is my first read by Deb Goodman, and it was so fun. I really loved the instant connection between Milo and Rose. They have one night of adventure and fun reality hits.
“But thoughts of the most intoxicating, perfect kiss of my life, render me nearly useless the rest of the evening.”
Rose has had such a crappy life and situation but she is determined to do what’s best for her and her baby boy Callum. Milo wants to make his family happy but also do what he wants to do in his life. When he meets Rose, she helps put things into perspective for him.
“I want to be OK. I want to be strong. I want to feel loved. And right now? This with Milo? It feels like this is how it’s always been and how it always will be.”
As their worlds collide a second time, the relationship they build is amazing, sweet and fun. I loved all of it. Milo was so good with Callum and her crazy family that she adores in return, Rose really knows Milo and completely trusts him.
“The things you’ve been through haven’t broken you, Rose. They’ve given you a strength that is in and of itself, beautiful. There’s nothing like it..”
Things I loved: Penpals Single mom He falls first Opposites/ Romeo Juliet vibe Determined FMC Strangers to friends to More Secret Author Milo‘s kindness The swing Ice cream cone theory Middle name guessing His Poetry
“Thoughts of you drift into my consciousness, and I’m lost in a deep warmth, Rose. You are the canopy for my loneliness. The human cup for my parched hunger. Your simple glance stops time.”
This serendipitous romance may be my favorite of the Tate Brothers series. This romance was meant to be, but it was not going to be an easy one.
A handsome stranger, a nasty ex, who happens to be Rose's boss, and an agreement between the handsome stranger and Rose to prank her egg headed boss sounds like fun, games and a little sweet revenge. Rose and Milo never dreamed one night that started with a prank would alter their lives forever. After all, they will never see each other again. Boy were they wrong. Fate or serendipity says otherwise. That is what made this romance even more special to me.
I could write for days about all of the things I loved about this book, but I will not do that. My highlights were the playground incident. I laughed for several minutes and even chuckled while writing about it. I also adored the old fashioned letter writing back and forth. It added another layer of romance to this swoony story. Milo's interaction with Rose's son, Callum, will warm you from the inside out.
This hard fought romance will have you cheering Milo and Rose on. While I wanted to throttle Rose several times, I also had a grudging respect for her staunch refusal to give up on her dreams.
The Tate brothers always provide plenty of amusement, while also showcasing their true brotherhood as they look out for one another out of a place of love.
This book was delightful from cover to cover. I really did not want it to end.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Just a Distraction is the sixth book in the Tate Brothers series. While those who have read the previous books will have a better understanding of the Tate family dynamics, I do think this could be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.
Oh, Milo and Rose! What a sweet story this was! Right from the start these two drew me in with a prank on her boss/ex and a night of platonic fun... that didn't quite go quite as expected. I found myself laughing out loud at the... well, we'll just call it a predicament... that Milo found himself in by the end. The first of many moments throughout that had me laughing! Six months later, they find themselves back in the same place and all that chemistry (that was certainly NOT platonic) was still there... but so were the reasons she had for not being together. I love a MMC who falls hard and fast, and Milo certainly does just that. They certainly have some big obstacles to work through, but I loved how very supportive they were of each other's dreams and goals throughout the story. And the way Milo was with her son? Oh my goodness, he really was just the sweetest. I truly couldn't get enough of these two!
Just a Distraction is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
