Hi, I am Jynx. Yes, I am a human. Rare here, I know. I am from Bordeaux Beach, California and I have spent the past fifteen years making a living out of unaliving people with one specific reach Monster Island and take out my final target. I don’t care much about this game or even the island. I have a mission to complete, and gods help anyone who gets between me and the man I am here to take down. I will do anything to take out my target and get back to my man-harem, the three juicy demons I wishfully call mine…even though they keep telling me they aren’t, they are so cute when they do that. Anywho, I have a job to do.
***
I am Bowen, a wolf shifter from New York. I don’t really want to be here, but my egomaniacal boss is literally forcing me to be. And when I say boss, I mean the monstrous mafioso, Don Mariano. I am proud of how cold and unfeeling I am, and I certainly do not want to interact with others, even if I have to be here. My life depends on it. So here I will be for the foreseeable future. I just hope the clothes are decent.
***
Hola, I am Xavi, a marigold spirit from Eternity, you may know it as the Underworld. I am here to see if I can finally find a place where I can escape my horrible fate. The stars have foretold that I will have a harrowing future that will shift the way things are for the entire world, and so I left home, mi familia, and all that I knew and loved to keep them safe. But it wasn’t far enough. And now I am seeking sanctuary on the island, the island that is protected and safe from the rest of the world. If I can win this game, then I can stay. And hopefully escape my doomed fate.
***
Hi. I am Lilith. I am not sure what kind of monster I am. I was the creation of a human with a science fetish who thought he could play at being a god. I have lived alone for the past forty years since I was brought to life and have spent the entire time hiding away from the human and monster population alike. I am too frightening to look at, my scars and electrodes and mint-green skin make me hideous. I am trying to see if I can win this game and finally find a place where I can be at peace away from society. Yet in order to do that, I will have to be more visible than ever I have been. I will have to face the world and my own fears. But it will be worth it. I hope.

This year’s line-up promises to be dramatic and thrilling.

But let’s not forget some of the locals who make this show all the more enticing. From the proprietor of our favourite bar, Ronan Black, the mixed bull and bison shifter with a handsomely marred face and dark past. The control freak of a Professor Huntley Maddox with a secret hiding in his spirit. To the brooding vampire police officer, Æroh Price and his partner the stone-cold gargoyle, DuQuesne LeBeaux each with their own secrets to hide.
Which lies will these contestants tell to get their way, their desires? What are they willing to sacrifice to grasp their dreams?

Find out on this season of Monster Island. The series features MF, MM, FF, MFM, FFM, MMFM, MFMM (why choose) and multiple tropes.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this early. This was my first monster story book to read. Oh my. At first I couldn’t get into it but by chapter 6 I was hooked. I could not stop reading. I really liked Jynx and Ronan. Their characters were phenomenal. But the other characters were great as well. I liked the storyline. However the ending was surprised, left on a cliffhanger. Definitely can’t wait for the next book to the story. 20/10 highly recommend.

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

This book is very dark, I mean the first chapter is a torture scene with a very particular body part haha. Idk why, I wasn’t expecting it to be this dark but that’s on me and my expectations going in. I mean the description says unaliving in it, come on, I should have understood the assignment better haha. I’m not a huge fan of dark personally, so I’m going into this with the mindset of someone who does and what they would think. I was actually able to enjoy it even though it’s not particularly what I read normally. I did like the grittiness of it. The author does a great job at visualizing which I appreciate since there’s a lot going on. The scenes with the announcers were great! I love the idea of a reality show to act out all your depravity with these delinquent like characters. It’s a super cool idea and is very unique. The addition of the school feels a little off. Like all these tough bada** people just sitting around haha but then again, maybe that’s funny. There are a lot of characters to keep up on which I just suck at doing haha so I was confused at times but if you’re better at that than I am, you’ll be just fine. It’s easier when you get into the book more. I love the pages and pictures where it tells you who is speaking and the main character for that particular chapter. I like the bantering too, the characters are likable. The different kinds of monsters and species are cool. It does end of a cliffhanger, where you just go oooooohhhh, something is about to go down! lol mic drop (pun intended?). It is a very long book so make sure you keep that in mind for your timeframe. I don’t wanna give away too much, so just go read it and see for yourself

I probably won’t read the second book just because of my personal preferences and that I’m a complete wimp, however I’ll be recommending this series to my friends who love this stuff and to other dark readers as well. I think this author did a great job. This series is perfect for people who like Nikki St Crowe!!! :). It was giving me those type of vibes. I just wanna say thank you to the author for giving me this opportunity and that they should be really proud of themselves!

Whew. I recieved this book as an ARC and let me tell you if you like your thrillers sharp, seductive, and soaked in secrets, A Murder of Secrets and Lies is your next obsession. Deja Colleen doesn’t just write a story, she lures you into a twisted maze of power plays, dangerous desires, and lies so thick you’ll need a flashlight and a therapist to get through them.

Let’s talk about the setup: you’ve got high stakes, a mysterious murder, and a cast of characters who are either scheming, scared, or scarily good at pretending to be innocent. And just when you think you’ve figured out who’s pulling the strings? BAM! Colleen hits you with a twist so slick you’ll drop your Kindle in the bath. (Not that I’m speaking from experience.)

The romantic tension in this book is chef’s kiss. It’s messy. It’s magnetic. And it’s got that dangerous edge that makes you yell at the characters like you're watching a reality show where someone’s about to sleep with the enemy. Again.

This isn’t a cozy murder mystery, it’s fast-paced, a little ruthless, and totally addictive. Think: betrayal, obsession, and a healthy dose of psychological warfare. Colleen’s writing is sharp, unapologetic, and dripping with suspense. She doesn’t just pull the rug out from under you—she sets it on fire and dares you to keep reading.

Final verdict? A Murder of Secrets and Lies is a spicy, brain-twisting ride that will leave you breathless, suspicious of everyone, and immediately searching for Deja Colleen’s next book. 10/10 would get emotionally wrecked again.

As someone who can multitask like crazy at times, I had a bit of a harder time with this just based on the length of the chapters and all the different characters. I personally had to reread the odd time.

The variety of characters is so intriguing, the monsters and ghouls and more was new and such a nice addition to a monster book besides the most commonly used ones.

It’s dark and twisted so if gore and madness to the max with crazy people doing fucked up stuff at times is your thing this is it.

Glad I got to be apart of this ARC, excited for the 2nd book already!!

I really enjoyed this universe and the characters in it. I was definitely not expecting some of the twists, especially the one at the end! *gasp*

It did take me a little while to grasp the writing style and to wrap my head around the large number of characters I needed to keep track of, all with alter egos and/or nicknames. I definitely had to reread quite a few sections, but once I had a handle on who everybody was and their personalities, I quickly found myself loving them. Jynx, in particular, has a special place in my heart, so I'll definitely read the second book.

This book does have darker elements so be sure to check the TW and the romances are more of a slow burn, so this book was filled with alot of longing, tension and denial (but we all secretly love that, right? Haha).

I need book 2 NOW!

“A Murder of Secrets and Lies” starts with a BANG and hooks you from the first line. This book is dark. The first sentence sets up the expectation for how unhinged things get, and I loved every second of it! The author blends the unhinged and emotional aspects of the story very well.

This book features a large cast of diverse characters. I really enjoyed the inclusion of multiple monsters and how well thought out all the different species were.
This book focuses more on the characters, their dynamics with one another, and their journeys of personal growth and self-discovery, which I loved! There was also a great found family aspect among the characters, and the romantic pairings and the tension were AMAZING. I need more of all of them!

My only two minor critiques would be that, as entertaining as this book was, there were times I found myself struggling with the pacing. It wasn't until the end that there was some momentum with an underlying plot point that had been teased throughout the book. I also wish there had been a bit more of the reality TV aspect depicted in this book.

Overall, this was a strong debut novel and book one felt like it was just scratching the surface of all the amazing things to come from this universe. I am excited to read more and will be keeping an eye out for book 2!

Thank you so much to the author for providing me with an ARC copy of their book <3

OMG this book!! It grabbed me by the heartstrings and kept pulling. I don’t usually cry when I’m reading but this book made me cry. The world building is amazing and the character development is fantastic! If you choose to read this do yourself a favor and don’t rush through it. This is the kind of book that you need to savor. There’s a lot going on and if you’re not paying attention you will miss something important. I freaked out at the ending because OMG a cliffhanger seriously?!! But! I do know that this just the first book in this series so I’m going to try to be patient about waiting for the next book so I can find out what happens. I NEED more Ronan and Jynx!!

✖️Book Review w/o Spoilers:
A Murder of Secrets & Lies by Deja Colleen is a dark contemporary romantasy–monsters romance all wrapped into one, my bookish people. It’s a wild ride, and I had a great time reading the ARC!

The premise? Monsters were outed to the world years ago. To maintain peace between humans and magical creatures/monsters/demons/gods, a reality TV show called Monsters Island was created. A select group competes for a chance to live on the Forbidden Island, where magical powers are enhanced and time is of no consequence. But first, they must enroll in one of the most prestigious universities—for five years—until they can compete.

It’s multiple POVs. A one-of-a-kind worldbuilding. It’s heavily graphic, but threaded with dark humour. It’s not a fast read; the universe is vast and unique, and there are many MCs to follow. Most of them are morally grey, yet fierce and loyal. I loved the strong Found Family trope in this book! You’ll also get: Fated-Mates, Friends-to-Lovers, Enemies-to-Lovers and Forbidden Love. A pretty good set to entertain yourself! Furthermore, each character feels carefully crafted, and the pairings between MCs are smartly done—honestly, that’s what hooked me from the start. My favorites? Hands down Jinx and Ronan ❤️‍🔥(that locker room scene before—and especially after—DuQue finds them? The way Ronan’s spiritual animal reacts? Swoon and chills!).

That said, I would’ve loved more action and spicy scenes to balance out the heavy worldbuilding. However, seems like this first book was more of a introduction to what’s coming. The ending was INCREDIBLY SHOCKING—and as expected, a huge cliffhanger. A whole new level of crazy twists has been left unlocked as we get a glimpse of unexpected revelations from one of the main villains, so I’ll definitely be waiting to devour more. Also—DRAGONS are coming?! YAY. Can’t wait. 🐉

📍ARC Review

Hello, my girly girls!

I wanted to review this book as soon as I started reading it. I went into the book thinking it would be several separate stories in one book, but I was in for a surprise. I didn't know what to expect, and I feel that, like all fantasy books, the first book is usually an introduction to the world and the characters. I can't deny that at first I didn't really understand how things worked, but the more I got into it and understood the dynamics, the more I loved it

It has undoubtedly been an interesting read. We don't have just one main character, but rather several FMCs and many more MMCs, and we see everyone's progress in the same story. I love that the author focuses on the friendship that develops between the FMCs. It's definitely very impressive to read how they all come together without seeking or wanting it. Of course, you could say that there are beginnings of what will be future couples... Let me tell you that even though I think I have the couples figured out, the author suddenly throws a curveball that makes you wonder if that's not the right person for them.

📍Do I recommend it?

Yes, as I mentioned above. This is the first book in what will be a series, and you can definitely see the introduction to the world and the characters. The dynamic way it is written makes you not want to put the book down until you finish it.

So if you're looking for a modern fantasy with unique characters, possible found families, and lots of monsters that will make you want to see more of them, don't wait any longer and order “A Murder off Secrets & Lies” now. And when you have it, come back and tell me what you think.

If you were on Monster Island, what kind of monster would you be?

Monster gameshow

First off this book was crazy. There are so many things going on between all the characters on the island, those outside the island and the gameshow itself.

This story is multi pov many times over. We get bits a pieces from all kinds of characters. Though it does center around the five ladies that all came to the show for different reasons but they all need the safety th y can find here, though safety is maybe not quite what they expect.

We definitely have some fated mate things going on though none has b en actually confirmed yet. Just basing this on the reactions of the characters together.

I absolutely freaking love Jynx. She will say anything she wants and back it up in a way that people rarely argue with her. Her story is filled with a lot of pain and manipulation. She may be human but her abilities are very strong and unique.

Lilith was given a bad lot in her life and had no idea what she is or what shs is capable of doing. Xavi chose to leave her path as a marigold due to a prophecy she did not want to fulfill. Bowen is a wolf shifter who was forced here by a djinn to complete something though she has no clue what that purpose is. Pharah is a mummy and we don't learn a lot about her until later in the book.

These ladies are here to make their mark on the island. This starts off with Ronan who owns the local bar and quickly spreads to other important people.

That ending was maniacle and I love and hate it. I absolutely need to know what happens next. The game has changed and there are new puppets in charge. What is really going on and what can we expect next?

Thank you to the author for an e-arc. All opinions remain 100% genuine.

Monster High for the dark and depraved, with a good dash of badarse characters and healthy dollop of spice, this was a good time.

It was slow to start, but I think that was down this being such an expansive story, with a plethora of characters. I do think it could have done with greater editing though and really only thought we would have got a similar story with just Jynx as our main POV, with a few chapters from Bowen, Lilith and Xavi dotted in, but the amount of perspectives we read from was way too unnecessary and the chapters were often too long and rambly.

It took me a long while to click about The Chessmen organisation but once I pin pointed a significant character, it all fell into place for me and that was really rewarding.

Despite enjoying this atmosphere, tension and most of the characters.. I did want to read this for the adult content and it wasn't really until we got to around the 60% mark that plot development and actual action took place.

I think it felt way too much like a slow burn for me and with the amount of pages in this book, I think it would have done well from a massive cull in terms of editing and speeding up some of the more steamier and action-paced scenes. I found that without those scenes it did really drag and become a bit convoluted with too many characters building the same picture but not in many unique ways.

Loved the nod to a song I love (Natalia Kills - Problem) ... Totally makes sense that this is Jynx' anthem!

Pick it up, give it a go & enjoy!

Wow. Just wow. This book was deliciously unhinged, and I loved every minute of it! From the incredible characters to the dark, twisted universe and the whole reality-show aspect—everything just clicked.

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous at first about the multiple POVs, but it was so well done and easy to follow. And let’s talk about the creativity here! The different kinds of monsters and species were fascinating and kept me hooked the entire time.

This is a dark book, but as a dark romance lover myself, I have to say—it was straight-up perfect! The intensity, the stakes, the wild unpredictability… all of it worked so well. And that ending? You’re seriously killing me! 😭🔥 I need the next book like, yesterday.

Jynx might be my favorite character, but honestly, I love all of them. They’re all so compelling and unforgettable. The world-building is stellar, and the whole universe feels so rich and immersive.

If you love dark romance with intricate characters, a dash of madness, and an addictive plot, this book is for you. I’m absolutely here for every future book in this universe, because let’s face it—I’m hooked.

Big thanks to Deja for this absolutely amazing ARC! Your work is incredible, and I’m so grateful to be part of this journey.

We Love Monsters Here!!

A Murder of Secrets and Lies by Deja Colleen is book #1 of the Monster Island Series, and what a ride it was!

We have 5 bad@ss FMCs who form a strong friendship while competing on a reality tv show for a chance to stay and live on Monster Island, which is protected from the outside world. We have many interesting monsters and human characters as well as some crazy, dark villains. This is a lengthy read, but well worth your time. The banter, the fun, the loyalty between characters was well executed.

I can't wait for the next book to see what happens during this competition and the love interests of our awesome FMCs.

A Murder of Secrets & Lies is the first book in the Monster Island series. It's dark, unhinged, and was a great introduction to all of the characters. It took me a while to get into the story, and at times the POV switches felt overwhelming, but once they got to the island, I was completely hooked. I love a stabby, unhinged FMC, and Jynx definitely fits that role perfectly. I found all the FMCs intriguing in their own way and can’t wait to find out what happens to them in the next book.

Thanks to Deja Colleen for my advanced copy.

Wow.. just wow..

This was a slow start at first, but trust the process within these pages!.
It's Monster sifter sort-to-speak. This does have Spice, although it's more of a gradual build throughout it will have you question your morals. The way the author did this was well done an i can't wait to see where else these characters go an how the story will progress in the next installment.

This book was a dark, emotional rollercoaster in the best way. It explores love in the shadows—raw, obsessive, and deeply flawed. The characters are morally grey, their pasts messy, and their relationship anything but conventional, but that’s what makes it so gripping. The tension, the vulnerability, and the slow unraveling of trust kept me completely hooked. It’s not your typical love story—and that’s exactly why I loved it.

First and foremost this one is dark right out of the gate and I am here for it. I'm not huge on spoilers so this is going to be a little vague. This book is jam packed with lies, betrayals, and lust, OH MY. I'm a sucker for unreliable characters and please believe me when I say there's not one character involved that I wouldn't second guess. Everyone is suspish as hell. It's typical of me to figure out a book pretty early on and I fully believed I did, however I was fed some humble pie as I reached the twist and found I was definitely wrong. I could have never seen that coming. The story is incredibly addictive and I COULD NOT get enough. Even if I wasn't already committed to reading the next in the series , that frickin cliffhanger did me in. I cannot wait to read more from Monster Island and see what else Deja has up her nefarious little sleeve.

This is easily 4.5 stars for me!

Be prepared for a chaotic and thrilling ride into the world of Monster Island and its residents. Just know, this isn’t for the faint of heart!

A Murder of Secrets and Lies is a thrill ride. The storytelling is unique, the world-building is impeccable, and the character development is superb, with multiple points of view that truly pack a punch.

This book has one of the most unforgettable openings I have ever read! The narrative had me laughing from the very first page, and then BAM – it turns dark real quick. Check those trigger warnings before diving in! But heads up, after chapter one, it’s not as dark and twisted, so hang in there. It’s worth it.

I absolutely love the group of female characters, who have lived solitary lives forming no real connections, meeting on the Monster Island TV show. They instantly connect and become close friends, despite their diverse backgrounds.

The male characters on the island have a tight-knit bond with a rich history. However, the arrival of the females disrupts their dynamic, turning everything upside down. The interactions between the groups, individuals, and their relationships are perfect.

Jynx is absolutely my favorite! She’s unhinged and chaotic in the best way. Her dynamic with Ronan is so perfect. Several subtle hints and clever Easter eggs are sprinkled throughout, and I can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses.

The multiple points of view are phenomenal for character growth and introducing fresh faces (there are many). They help navigate the relationships and the history shared among the characters and give a lot of insight into each character and their development.

I did find this a little complicated from the sheer number of characters at times, so that's why I gave it 4.5 stars. But overall, the story is great and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

What a great debut from Deja Colleen! I look forward to book two!
