Meet Hella Paige. She kills zombies. Well, technically her virus kills zombies, the one that she contracted after being bitten by her undead neighbor. In the much anticipated sequel to POCKETS OF THE DEAD, Hella overcomes her fear and controlling nature to battle both living and undead foes. Hella finds her way through the mysterious town of Pittsboro, once a sleepy haven for hippies and now run by a secretive and magnanimous leader named Hipslow. She moves on to fight her way through Durham and rescue her friend Saudah, battling the evil forces of Mace Duce’s army.
While Huck captured her heart in love at first sight, she now questions those feelings as she’s thrust into the action with Zeke. Having Zeke by her side, the strongest fighter on her team, makes her feel invincible. Will Hella be able to escape the clutches of Mace Duce or will she be turned into another experiment in his reprehensible lab? Will she be able to find love with Huck or with Zeke or will she leave love by the wayside to save the world?
I discovered at a young age that I liked to write. It was mostly because of my father, who wrote so much that he could not leave his study without an avalanche of papers following him. In fact, the only piece of furniture in the study was an old leather sofa. The rest of the room was full of books and bookshelves. It was on this sofa that I spent many hours honing my craft, even after he was gone.
At first I didn't know what to think of Hella Kills or how I much I would like it. Once I started reading it though, I really got hooked on it. Let's see...where should I start? I'll start with the story. I really liked the plot line and the abilities of the main protagonist Hella. Hella Kills is definitely not your average zombie story. Hella has a virus that can counter the zombies as well as a bite that can turn normal people into zombies. I was really interested in the concept of it because it was different then the average survival zombie apocalypse type story. The characters were also interesting, enjoyable, and easy to get attached too. While Hilla Kills has a lot of action in it, it also focuses on some character development. You get to see the characters change and grow. It's easy to sympathise with their choices and situations. The main character Hella, is a very strong character. She's a bit headstrong, can hold her own in a fight, and is just all together a bad ass. However, even though she's strong and can do things on her own, she's not afraid to be human and make connections with the people she meets. I really loved that about her character, she's not a generic reprint of a billion "I'm such a bad ass loner" characters. All in all this story was very enjoyably! I recommend fans of the zombies check this book out, you won't be disappointed. I'm now eagerly awaiting for book three to come out!
After reading the first book in the Dawnland series I was anxious to read the second one and see where the story went.
In Hella Kills we catch up with the crew after they had narrowly escaped the military attack where they lost some of their own and were split up from other members of their group.
Hella and Huck are a great couple and I rooted for them in the first book, but throughout the second book, I think I became just as confused as Hella.
There was quite a bit of depth and development added to the characters in this book. The characters are believable and easy to relate to.
Hella gets right into the fighting in this book learning how to be an effective zombie killer without her virus. She has also learned that her bite can turn others into zombies and that they could be immune to her killer virus.
Hella and her crew must re-unite with the others, save her friend from the sadistic military crew all the while keeping her secret safe from them so that they won't capture her and start experimenting on her.
Along they way they meet other friends, foes and of course, zombies. There is betrayal, romance and survival. I will say I was quite shocked at the twist that Hella's love life takes in the second installment. I figured Huck would be the one, but now I am not so sure, and I am not even sure who I am rooting for anymore.
The plot is nicely thought out and delivered well. The details are quite descriptive and helps to paint a nice picture in my head while reading. The development of the story is delivered at an even pace, enough to keep you hooked.
This series has a unique concept when it comes to Hella's virus and her ability to kill zombies. It is quite refreshing to read something that has a different edge than your standard zombie apocalypse.
So. I have to say that this book grew on me. I was frustrated with it initially because of how it started, making it to a new place only to gloss over the fact that one of the original crew has been turned. Where was the human element there?
After that point, I got into the swing of things and carried on with enjoying the book. I'm beginning to like Hella more. I really liked her at the start of the first book because she was so naive and terrified. I like my main characters to be "normal" like that. You can see her confidence in herself and her abilities grow as the series progresses.
The virus is a nice touch as it adds an element of fun to the world. Something that can keep them safe in a terrifying world.
My big question is - who's the real enemy Hipslow or Mace?
The editing in the first book had a few glaring issues and I feel like the author struggled to make the reader see or feel the characters' emotions. That problem continued in this one although I think it got better. However, the editing was nonexistent. I think it's important to understand that a lot of zombie books are not well written and are just gory stories with no real character development. This one was very interesting and kept me reading. So I'm able to overlook any of the issues it has because I enjoyed the story. I also like that it didn't have a cliffhanger. I will definitely read the next one.
I thought that Hella Kills was a great book. I love Karen Carrs writing, the descriptive manner that she has. I think that the concept of Hella is awesome and I enjoy a strong female character. I will admit that I am a fan of Huck, more than a fan of Zeke, and this book disappointed me in that aspect. Overall though, its a great read one that I definitely recommend to anyone who loves to read zombie/apocalypse novels. I am awaiting the third book in the series because I have to see what is in store for the characters.
I won this on Goodreads If I lived in the world that Hella lives in I would want to be her friend and help her fight the fight and would differently would want her powers on my side and her true friends that help each other I clearly enjoyed reading this story of Zombies or as Hella says Zero. The characters who come together to fight for survival and to save who the can is very strong. It is a hard struggle that is written quite well and makes all characters seem real and the events of disaster and winning the war real
I enjoyed this even more than the first. Introducing a corrupt charcter to the mix makes the story more realistic and more dramtic. Let's face it there is always someone acting like an ass. That is just a fact of life. Hella is starting to become a real badass. Yet, she is facing feelings every young woman does.
The editing issues from book one persist. I found the actions of a lot of the characters pretty accurate. I think that in an actual zombie apocalypse everyone would argue and make stupid choices.
