Jake Stewart was enjoying life until Diana appeared and changed it. Why did she choose his house? Was it the Union Jack fluttering in the garden that attracted her? Could it have been the photographs of her that Jake had pinned up in the hallway?
Or was it simply him?
Maybe there was something about him she liked? You never knew with ghosts. But why had she returned to earth? What did she want? It was not a romance. It was not even for a thrill. Nor was it for a good laugh.
So what was it?
It was not long before he found out.
A satire on royalty, republicanism, MI5 and child genius.
*Please note that I received this book through Goodreads from a kind giveaway by the author in exchange for an honest review*
What would you do if you were a hapless royalist and suddenly Princess Diana's ghost showed up in your house and bit by bit started taking over your life with her gentle yet firm demands? Poor Jake Stewart has exactly this happen to him one day, and boy does his life change! I actually did find myself debating on the complexities of putting up a monument in my front garden, and going about getting exhibits for a museum (the latter definitely easier!).
I think the book has quite a number of funny moments and is enjoyable, though a bit uneven - also funnily enough like one of the reviewers I actually most enjoyed the bits including the Queen! I liked Jake but got exasperated with his total doormat-iness about half way throughout, and the know-it-all supremely annoying daughter made me want to trap her in a cage and then release her like a plague upon some country very far away! The author also definitely does not hold the MI6 in especially high regard... and I like to think that in reality the Queen would probably want to do to this book what in the book she does to Princess Diana's biography by Jake :)
This was my very first introduction to winning a Goodreads Giveaway and I certainly wasn't disappointed! Alan Ford's book is firmly tongue in cheek whilst exploring what might happen if you found a ghost...a Royal ghost to boot, wandering around in your house.
Whether it's trying to figure out the best way to build a decent memorial statue of Diana..or getting arrested after collecting funds for said memorial; (without a license) outside Tesco's, dressed in a pink top hat emblazoned with the Queen's head on it (not to mention some rather dubious patch covered jeans), poor Jake seems to bumble his way through one darkly funny scrape after another, failing miserably at every turn. You can't help but feel rather sorry for him. Witty and entertaining, I heartily recommend this book to everyone!
This was a Goodreads giveaway. Although I enjoyed reading it I found none of the characters at all sympathetic except, bizarrely, the Queen. I got very frustrated with the central character who had no backbone at all and was manipulated either by his obnoxious wife, his tiresome daughter or the ghost of Princess Diana. The satire in the book is what I would describe as 'sledgehammer style', not subtle at all so if you enjoy that kind of humour then this is the book for you.
