Universal War One #1-6

Universal War One

Rate this book
Universal War One is a six-part French comic book limited series written, penciled, and inked by Denis Bajram. The series was initially published in France by Soleil Productions from 1998 to 2006. Due to its popularity, it was later translated and released in English by Marvel Comics. The genre is military science fiction, and the series deals with such ideas as time dilation and time travel. Following the comics standards in France and Belgium, each of the six part of the story has an approximately 50 pages length, making the whole story longer than usual limited series. The first issue of a follow up series Universal War Two is announced in French for 23 September 2013.

The series begins at the onset of a civil war between the United Earth Forces (UEF) and the Colonization Industrial Companies (CIC), which comprises the various outposts and colonies beginning at the planet Saturn and beyond. The civil war begins when it is discovered that an immense black wall appears near Saturn, cutting the solar system in two. The black wall absorbs all light and matter. Enormous, incomprehensible and terrifying, "the wall" is centered on Uranus's moon Oberon, cutting off access to any planet beyond Saturn. Admiral Von Richtburg discovers that the CIC was attempting to begin a civil war, and orders the Purgatory Squadron, a band of soldiers given a second chance after courts-martial, to investigate the phenomenon known as "the wall".

After the Purgatory Squadron devises a method of breaching and investigating the wall, they are fired upon by a vessel of unknown design. Admiral von Richtburg orders his UEF 3rd Fleet into the wall, and thus begins the First Universal War.

Artwork: 3
Writing: 2
Story: 2
Satisfaction: 2

I read an English translation of this work so it's possible that many of my issues with it are on matters lost in translation from the original French but I'm not sure a better translation would have made this more enjoyable for me.

Though I didn't hate it as much as other members of my bookclub did, I did agree with many of the complaints they had. The largest point being that all of the female characters in this story exist as a misogynist's fantasy. Considering the book opens with a strong female captain directly disobeying orders to murder a group of civilians, it was kind of surprising that it turned out that way but it's all downhill from there.

Choice moments including but not limited to:

Yay okay well all of that is terrible but despite how bad all of that is, I still don't find myself *hating* it and not because it's not just bad but because the book failed to actually inspire any sort of strong emotion at all for me. I found the characters unbelievable and weirdly inconsistent despite being driven by only a single attribute.

Plotwise, the author plays around a lot with the concept of fate and time jumps which is mostly okay except for the end of this volume where one comes out of the sky in Deus ex Machina style. I got the impression that even the author felt that way about it since he tries to hang a lantern on it with one of the characters talking about how odd it is.

I did enjoy the short character backstories at the beginning of each issue (six in this volume) though some I found more contrived than others.

Overall, very strong eh with a slight negative lean.

Was verbirgt sich hinter der Fläche, was passiert darin?

This was almost a four star book. It has many elements I enjoy, including space travel, colonization of other planets, explorations of wormholes and what their effects might be, time travel, and fate and destiny. The world building is, overall, rather interesting, and the artwork is incredible.
But the author’s treatment of women is awful. One character is almost raped, then the rapist is forgiven, and she ends up marrying him. Then another character wonders if the only reason he stopped the rape from happening was if he was jealous. And this internal monologue is happening while he’s ogling a woman sleeping in her underwear.
None of the female characters have any real agency, and end up serving as love interests for the male characters. And the main (male) character is the smartest person in the entire solar system, and ends up founding his own religion with a planet full of followers.
It’s offensive, tired, and completely unoriginal in its portrayal of extremely gendered characters.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This comic series has an very interesting main idea, but unfortunatelly this gets killed after several pages + the rest of the story is horrible. I forced myself reading it until the end with hoped that the author didn't kill it totally, but was disappointed, he just destroyed nice potential here.

Pros:
- The gfx side and drawings are very nice
- Base plot idea

Cons:
- Retarded dialougues
- Clichee after clichee
- Semiflat characters with "overlapping" personalities (the character has some set of attributes, and suddently after 70 pages he acts absolutelly like one of other characters..)
- side plots are useless, they are just a waste and unfortunatelly with dialougues they take 90% of the space..

For the defence of the author I just hope he wrote the dialougues & script when he was 6y.o. otherwise I'd suggest him not to publish any more rubbish :(

this is perfect example how to ruin a good idea (thats what makes me really upset), this could have been one of the best sci-fi comics..

Before this graphic novel ‘Universe War One’ explodes with vibrant colour, there’s a three-page grey prologue. The inhabitants of Titan are revolting and Lieutenant June Williamson is ordered to ‘clean up’ a sector. Euphemisms for murder will obviously remain popular with authoritarians in the future. Williamson refuses to follow orders because the only people to be ‘cleaned’ are women and children. Luckily, as it turns out, this includes the wife and child of a high ranking officer, so she is spared court-martial. Later, she gets to form Purgatory Squadron, a band of talented misfits who were all in line for severe disciplinary action. The child she refused to kill is her second-in-command. The others are Balti, a reckless, disobedient hero; Mario, a coward; Milorad, a rapist and Kalish, a genius who beats the crap out of people who disagree with him. There’s also Amina, a rape victim who ‘emasculated’ her attacker with a blade. Tough crew.

Then a sphere three billion kilometres in diameter appears near Uranus, centred on the satellite Oberon. It fills a third of the sky when viewed from Earth and seems to have many of the properties of a black hole. Oberon is controlled by I.C.C. – the Industrial Companies of Colonisation – yet they deny any knowledge of the Wall, as it is known. Earth’s military – the United Earths Force – sends a fleet to investigate. It’s an interesting situation that gets more interesting as the plot twists and turns but I’m not going to give that away and ruin your pleasure.

Here are death, sex, cowardice, heroism, love, brutality, nobility, compassion, all the varied strengths and weaknesses of humanity. I suppose all good stories cover some of this ground but few cover so much. It’s an epic tale on the grand scale of ‘Ringworld’ or ‘Riverworld’. I’d compare it to ‘Lord Of The Rings’ but it’s more adult than that, harder and definitely Science Fiction rather than fantasy. At one point, when they’re dealing with a time travel paradox, a character says, ‘The fools! Had they not read any classic Science Fiction!‘ Clearly, Denis Bajram has. It’s wonderful to have hard Science Fiction in graphic novel form.

The art is excellent but doesn’t take over. There are no filler splash pages or slow-mo sequences to occupy pages. The story comes first and there’s a lot of it to squeeze in. Bajram is clearly a writer of talent even without pictures, so both plot and dialogue are superbly handled. The French have had adult graphic novels for a long time now and may have the jump on the rest of the world when it comes to serious work and what a lot of work has gone into it!

Denis Bajram does both words and pictures for the 272 pages of story plus 6 covers from the original format. This hardback edition on good paper in glorious colour is worth every penny, euro, drachma, yen or dollar you might spend on it. Best of all, ‘Universal War Two’ is proceeding episodically in French right now and should hopefully be available in a similar format one day.

Wow. I didn't know this existed. A 2015 book in a bin of seriously marked-down books. It has a quite a story between its hardcovers. Yes, Sci Fi, intersteller wars, time travel, black holes as weapons, etc. But the story centers on a small band of ex-prisioners recruited to wotk for the military powers that be. They stick together, even when Earth and the universe seem to be falling apart, and I use that "when" deliberately. If you follow it closely, you can keep up with the changes, which are sometimes not changes, and sometimes they are. The universe has its ways. The characters have backstories and complicated histories, and they sometimes find themselves on opposite sides. 288 pages may not seem like enough for all that, but it is. The graphics are presented with the written story, so it's not all huge images with a few words. 'Tis a great story well presented.

Excellent, do recommend.

Very interesting, keeps you on the edge all the time. One of the few stories which should be reread to appreciate all its nuances.

The drawings are very good and extremely dynamic, conveying the story in a very smooth way.

The story is well crafted and follows its rules, making it an excellent science-fiction time-space-travel story. The plot points fit in a coherent narration, combining together with both expected moments and plot twists, both pleasing to read and see.

The only downpoint to me was the ending, which I deem a bit too idealistic, especially for the tone of the story until that point, but it does fit with the idea the story is trying to say.

Enjoyed it a lot although it is not the type of comic I usually read. (Also, the cover does not do justice to the quality of the drawings).
But the history was complex, following characters over years with both subtle and sharp personality changes.
Unrolls a scenario where humanity has sufficient knowledge and power to colonize the solar system, in a liberal capitalistic world with unmitigated accumulation of power.
The first half is pretty self-contained, with an end which felt like it could have been the end of the series. I was therefore pleasantly surprised that the second half managed to evolve an at least as interesting narrative arch.

Fiquei irritado com o Universal War One (#1-6), do ilustrador francês
Denis Bajram.
enquanto autor (dammit!)

Denis Bajram has crafted a science-fiction masterpiece. Featuring many unique concepts, excellent characterization, and unique uses of sci-fi conventions, UW1 distinguishes itself as arguably the best graphic novel of it’s kind, and certainly the most unique. The dense plot can be a bit hard to follow at times. That, combined with a somewhat dull first volume, and an out-of-place final volume, are the only real drawbacks. 9/10
