GURKHA (gur-kuh) n.
Nepalese warriors sworn to protect the world from demons [mythic]; A Nepalese soldier in the British or Indian army [contemporary].

Set in 1914 in the mighty Himalaya mountains, Gurkha is an epic historical fantasy following a proud young woman, Devi, and her battle with the shape-shifting demon, Mahisha, who haunts the isolated valleys. But Devi soon finds her fight is not on one front alone. When the British arrive unannounced, she is thrust into a new world where many more troubling life and death choices must be made. From grappling with restless demons to the bleak horrors of trench warfare during World War I, Gurkha is a mythical journey exploring the vengeful darkness of grief, the rise of Nepali hillmen as legendary soldiers, and the search for the divine here on earth.

Gurkha is an enchanting read. I couldn’t put it down …

This novel is an epic journey through time, space and dimension. It seamlessly ties together historical, mythical and fantasy genres. The author’s characterization of Devi as a strong female protagonist is fulsome. Her wisdom is evinced by her journey in the face of fear and uncertainty, and borne out in the love she feels for her people and the land that has given her life. The author’s depiction of Nepal and Nepalese culture is vivid and colourful. He skillfully draws the reader into this fictional world of beauty, chaos, longing & surrender.

The brilliant book cover for Gurkha prepared me for an exotic and thrilling adventure. Author Brodey has created an astounding and compelling story that took me to wars on intriguing levels - historical and mythical. The characters and their challenging situations are extremely well captured. I became so involved that I wanted to learn all about the legendary Nepali warriors and the world of demons and heroes of the Himalayas. I found this novel very satisfying on many levels and recommend it. It's got a great deal to offer readers in a mere 200 pages.
