REVIEW The Battle of the Bulge A Captivating Guide to the Largest Battle Fought by the American Army in World War II
Introduction The book is written by Captivating History, a historical book house owned by Matt Clayton Website: www.captivatinghistory.com Summary The battle of Bulge was one of the last clashes between German & Allied force, in World War II (WW II).The American and allied force landed on the beaches of Normandy, France and pushed back Germans. Hitler assigned General Alfred Jodl to organize counterattack against allied forces. Americans, British, Canadian, French & Polish and also Soviets were in combat with Germans, Finns, Romanians, Hungarian & Italians. Several Operations were planned by both sides , killing many soldiers, civilians and destroyed equipment and property. Germans planned to attack from Ardennes Forest, rugged, hilly and dense, and harsh terrain for war. It was a challenge to move on foot or by trucks or tanks in slippery and rainy forest. The Allied forces rest and recover in this area. They had no idea that Germans wil try to infiltrate from this direction. Ardennes Forest lied on the borders of France, Belgium, Luxemborg and Germany. German Luftwaffe was experienced in bad weather and at nights. The Germans decided to attack from Ardennes, as this strategy was planned in in WWI and at the start of WWII in 1940. At that time german forces were more advanced and succeeded. In 1944 the condition of Hitler army was weak, exhausted and frustrated. Many generals of Hitler didn’t t liked the idea. They were pessimistic about attacking from Ardennes and not sure to achieve anything. There plan was to commence the punch and reach Meuse River in 48 hours .Three German armies 6th Panzer, strongest on Northern flank, 5th Panzer in center & 7th Panzer against the American General Patton 3rd Army. Field Marshal Walter Modal considers this an unrealistic attack. Allies constructed intelligence gathering through spies, informers, military intelligence, diplomatic reports, and aerial reconnaissance. British experts intercepted german military codes and read German orders, communications & instructions. Germans started relying more on telephone and motorcycles couriers to avoid wiretapping. Maj General Alan Jones of 106th Infantry Div. received intelligence of German heavy armored movements across Ardennes Line, but Allies denied. The battle in Ardennes Forest was toilsome, lacking roads or narrow or poor quality. European winter of 1944-45 was the coldest loaded with snowstorms, mist, fog rains etc.The survival of infantry in these circumstances was a nightmare. They had to confront freezing winds, wet clothing and wet muddy boots causing trench foot. The German soldiers were exhausted. They never achieved victory in Soviet Union but lost large number of troops in Stalingrad.German forces for the attck consisted of 1st SS Panzer Corps, commanding 1st & 12th Panzer Divisions & 2nd SS Panzer Corps Commanding 2nd & 9th Panzer Divisions. One of the brutal skirmish occurred in the town of Malmedy. More than 100 American & Belgian soldiers & civilians were executed by SS Soldiers, also called Malmedy Massacre. The Germans have heavy and light equiments including Panzer Mark 1,II, IIIand robust Mark IV with 75mm Barrel,88mm anti tank guns, artillery, Panzer Mark VI Tiger, Mark V Panther & King Tigers, MMulti barrel Rocket launchers, anti tank launchers etc. American Sherman tanks were produced on larger scale, Willys Jeep, P-51 Mustang, browning 50 cal machine gun. 50000 Shrmans Tank rolled out and distributed also to UK, Soviet Union and China. Allies airpower capabilities reduced in bad weather and night time. The Germans started moving through Ardennes on Dec 17th 1944. US 9th Air Force, British 2nd Tactical and heavy bombers pounded German positions badly. Operation Bodenplatte (Baseplate) was planned for New year Day 1945. US General Courtney Hodges was commanding 3 Armored & 11 Inf Divisions and was deployed from Aachen to Luxembourg, about 85miles. There was an eight hour day light window to attack on Hitler forces. Allies retreated to Elsenborn Ridge. One of the biggest defetas was the destruction of three regiments of 106th Div and surrender of 7000 American soldiers on Dec 19th 1944. General Eisenhower didn’t realize the significance of the attack. American 28th Div suffered heavy casulaities by two Panzer Corps. Joachim Pieper lead Kampfgruppe (Battlegroup) with soldiers, vehicles & King Tiger tanks. On Dec 17th 1944 American fuel dump captured. Americans started blowing up bridges to disrupt the movement of Pieper. Sepp Dietrich ordered Peiper to retreat. Operation Grief commenced by Germans, to infiltrate into American forces. English Speaking germans were recruited and trained . Tanks were coloured in American theme. The German plan to kill General Eisenhower , exposed. Operation Stossr (Hawk), an airborne operation was executed poorly with very few veterans. The paratroopers were dropped without planning and at wrong locations. On Dec 20th Germans forces exhausted and disbanded. They decided to get back to German Lines. General Von Der Hydte surrendered in Moschau. General Hodges & General Omar were in command of 1st & 12 th Armies respectively. General Dwight Eisenhower was commander of allies in Western Europe. General Bradley to move 10th Armored Div from South & 7th Armored Div from North. 7th Arm Div defended St Vith town bravely. Battle of Bastogne was one of the world famous battle. Eight roads ran into Bastogne and it was also HQ of American 8th Corps. The town was surrounded by German for many days, which lowered supplies. Americans were offered to surrender by Hen.Luttwitz of 47th Panzer. The siege was lifted on Dec 26th 1944. 4th Armored Div of gen pattons 3rd Army brokethrough and supplies were restored. Bastogne & St Vith delayed German advance , and made them desparate. On Dec 24th General Heinz told Hitler about failure and transfer Panzer to Eastern front against Soviets. Fighting in Ardennes continued till the end of January & Germans would be in retreat. Operation Bodenplatte (Baseplate) was planned to attack and destroy allied airpower on the ground. It was led by General Herman Goring, a WWI Pilot. This operation caused 250 aircrafts of allies destroyed. Battle of Bulge was the last German offensive on the Western front. It was concluded on Jan 25th 1945. On Jan 15th 1945 Von Rundstedt began withdrawing from Ardennes. 6th Panzer & SS Panzer were sent to fight Hungary. By April it retreated to Austria & surrendered. By April 1st 300000 Soldiers surrendered to Ruhr Area and Berlin fell to Soviets. With the end of Battle of Bulge, the WWII concluded on May 8th 1945.

The last gasp of Hitler’s failure to recognize that World War II in Europe was lost to the Allies was an enormous surprise German offensive in the Ardennes. In 1940, the German offensive advanced easily to the Meuse River and beyond, but the situation had changed for 1944 was different. Large number of Allied troops, equipment, and air superiority in previously captured European territory contrasted with considerable losses of equipment and skilled soldiers and pilots. Advancing Russian forces from the East were no longer stoppable as the Eastern Front was now lost. The details of the events of the Battle of the Bulge and troop movements, the roles of the commanders, and the military strategies of each side was fascinating. A fascinating read of the last major German offensive effort spelled out in detail.
This book gives a solid and concise summary of the Battle of the Bulge and its impact on WWII. It included some very interesting comments on the military strategy behind the German decision to invade and the American decision to use a lightly-manned approach to the Ardennes. The book doesn’t have any new information; it’s more of a précis or an essay, but it is well-thought out and easy to read.

The book is short and therefore not incredibly detailed. It does, however, offer a great overview of the battle with a commentary on the advantages and disadvantages of each side of the protagonists.
