War brought them together. Forging peace could tear them apart.
Back in Kelvadan after narrowly escaping death, former exile Keera is now hailed as a hero for protecting the Great City against the lord of the clans. Forced to lie low as her injuries heal, she discovers the city’s position is more precarious than ever. Now, she faces an impossible betray the city that offered her a home, or be the Champion Kelvadan needs. Worst of all, the enemy forces are led by the man to whom she has given her heart.
After spending his life running from his destiny, Erix finds himself thrust into leadership after the death of his cruel mentor. With the clans of the desert at his command and Keera ripped from his grasp, he wants nothing more than to march on the city that took her—but the desert has other plans. As the Ballan Desert continues to punish those who fractured her magic, sowing division among the clans, Erix desperately seeks to restore the dunes he swore to serve and exact revenge on those who stole Keera away.
Left to navigate ever-changing sands and even more quickly shifting alliances, Erix and Keera must fight to find their way back to each other, even when the desert seems determined to keep them apart.
I've been reading fantasy novels since I was a little girl stealing books from my older sister’s shelves, and that has developed into a love of writing and storytelling. My writing is currently focused on fantasy and paranormal romance. When I'm not sitting in a local coffee shop writing and consuming an iced americano, I am a nurse researcher focused on breast cancer genetics. Though born and raised in the Chicago area, I live in Maryland with my loving husband and our two cats, who enjoy contributing to my work by walking across my keyboard at inopportune moments (the cats, not the husband).
4.5 stars! Crown of the Dunes by S.C. Grayson completely swept me away! This second book in the Ballan Desert series was such a fun, emotional, and exciting ride. I loved every second of it!
We follow Keera, once an exile and now a reluctant hero, as she’s forced to choose between betraying the city that gave her a home or standing as its champion, even as the man she loves leads the enemy forces. Erix, newly thrust into leadership after his mentor’s death, struggles to unite the desert clans while magic falters and old wounds resurface. Tensions rise, the desert becomes increasingly hostile, and both of them must fight to find their way back to each other before it all falls apart.
First of all, the romance? Oh. My. God. The yearning is unreal. Keera and Erix’s bond is beautifully written, full of love, sacrifice, and emotional depth. Erix is still so devoted to her, just like in book one, and the lengths he goes for her in this book? Huge. He’s willing to give up everything for her, and Keera just wants to protect him and make sure he never suffers again. I love them so much it hurts.
Keera’s growth really shone in this book. She becomes even more badass, making impossible choices and facing them head-on. Erix’s arc is quieter but no less powerful, as he slowly finds his place in the world and the people he wants in it. Well, until it goes downhill for him. I just want someone to give this man a break, please!
The worldbuilding really expanded in the best way. We learn more about the desert people’s history and legends, other kingdoms, and how it all connects to Kelvadan. Everything feels so layered, unique, and fully realized. The plot also picked up right where book one ended, and somehow delivered even more: more angst, more romance, more political tension, just more of everything!
There was a twist I saw coming early on, but the full reveal still managed to shock me. It unfolded in a way I absolutely didn’t expect, and I loved that. My only small critique is the pacing in the beginning to middle. There are moments where the stakes are supposed to feel urgent, but that urgency didn’t always come through clearly. But the tension really ramps up by the end!
The ending left me feeling everything: scared, hopeful, anxious, heartbroken, and so ready for book three! This was truly a rollercoaster in the best way, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the eARC!
☼「 4.5, I’m going to be 100% honest…I usually hate the desert, stars 」☼
I’m blown away. Some authors are so much more than ‘just writers.’ S.C. Grayson is a storyteller; a creator of living and breathing fictional worlds. I genuinely have trouble putting into words how fantastic this series is. The descriptions are captivating, and the relationships are complex. Keera and Erix own my heart. Nothing I write will give proper appreciation to Crown of the Dunes. Rarely am I left without the ability to articulate my feelings, but I am completely gutted of all basic communication skills. This book stole something from me, and I need the next one…tomorrow. This isn’t a 5 star read for me because Blood of the Sands was on another level. This is amazing, but I’ve tasted perfection and, while close, this isn’t quite there.

Ahh. Screaming. Kicking my feet. Planning how I’m going to do nothing, except read this, for the next few days. An unrealistic goal, but I’m dreaming like our MC’s. I’ve been quite bummy lately, so I’m begging my brain to let me enjoy this one. I think in the last week I’ve become the reigning DNF queen. If anyone would like the title I’ll ship it, free of charge, first class!
Since reading Blood of the Sands in April, I’ve been sitting in my local parks community sandbox. Kids have cried, parents have ranted, and my own children have forgotten they have a mother. Sacrifices have been made, but I’m a committed fan girl. If Crown of the Dunes is even kinda close to being as good book 1, I will keel over with glee. So very excited for this arc! Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for the opportunity to read!
The tension in this book is THICK! The Desert Clans and the City of Kelvadan are still at war over supplies and water. Keera was mortally wounded when she and Erix trekked across the desert to find and kill the Fire Wyrm. They succeeded, but at a cost. Erix is now in charge of the Clans that have camped themselves outside of the City of Kelvadon, and Keera was taken by a friend back inside the city to heal from her mortal injuries.
Erix estranged mother, the Queen, plans on making Keera her heir. Despite the fact that her son has similar powers to her. The abuse that she inflicted on her son may keep him outside of the Kelvedon walls forever, or until she dies.
Keera and Erix both have the power to obtain the heart of the desert and restore it, so that the draughts and famines can stop, but they must work together to get the heart from its prison.
Erix and Keera still have feelings for each other despite the fact that they're fighting on opposing sides. They both want what is best for the desert and their people, but each group of people seem to think there is a different way to achieve that.
Will Erix and Keera find a way to work together to save the desert?

“So many decisions lay before us, and I have very few answers, but I am certain of one thing, and that is my love for you.”
Actual Rating: 3.5⭐
Crown of the Dunes is the sequel to Blood of the Sands, which was one of my favorite reads last year—so I was really excited to dive back into this world!
This follow-up packs in more emotional depth, intense action, and twisty surprises that kept me interested till the very end.
The story picks up right after the first book’s ending. While the plot moves a bit slower this time around, it feels more character-driven, especially with Keera struggling to rule as queen and Erix caught in emotional turmoil between his loyalty to the clan and his love for Keera.
I was happy to see Keera and Erix reunited early on. Even though they’re together, the tension between their public roles and private feelings adds a bittersweet edge to their relationship. There’s also a great balance of angsty and spicy moments between them as they work together to retrieve the Heart and restore it to the Desert.
The last few chapters bring the stakes to a whole new level, and I had a hunch about the twist—and yep, I was right! Just when one villain is taken down, another swoops in to shake things up all over again. I kind of saw it coming (the reveal reminded me of a well-known movie), but the author did a great job making me second-guess myself and trust the wrong character for a while.
Overall, it’s a good continuation of the series. While I personally loved the first book a bit more, this one still delivered on the emotional stakes and action. And that ending? Definitely has me curious to see what’s next for Keera, Erix, and the rest of the crew!
I received a review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!
⚠️ 𝐓𝐖: Death/murder, violence, blood, parental abandonment, consensual sexual content, hunger/starvation, natural disasters, abuse, physical and psychological torture, animal death, (fantasy) drugs and alcohol, auditory and visual hallucinations, nonconsensual use of aphrodisiacs, thoughts of self harm
Tropes: slight enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies, impending war, separation between fmc and mmc
The separation between the two main characters caused me so much anguish like omg. The yearning was off the charts. It's so hard to see that since the last book they still obviously love each other but it's painful as they stay on opposite sides of the war.
Overall, great addition to the story and I can't wait for the next one!
I finished reading my arc and I loved every page of this book.
The growth of these characters, the plot and its twists, the emotional damage, the mystery, the politics...I enjoyed it all!
Of course the ending left me wanting more, but the book also concluded in a way that made me 100% sure that the final book of this trilogy will be EPIC. I can't wait!
After the cliffhanger book one ends with, book two picks up right where we left off. Sadly, though, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I expected. I really liked book one and was so excited to continue this thrilling story; however, it felt as if very little actually happened in this book, even though it’s quite long. There were many, many scenes that felt completely unnecessary, and overall, it dragged a lot. Things did get better in the last 20–30%, even if half of what happened was fairly predictable. The problem is that most of the main questions we had from book one remain unanswered for at least 70% of the story — and even by the end, many still are.
As for the romance… it was rather underwhelming. Erix was the best thing about this book, and I feel the story was so unfair to him — but especially Keera. I really liked Keera in book one, but in this book, she became so unbearable that I truly struggled with her, especially in the second half. I have a lot to say about this (and it’s loaded with spoilers).
I still like the setting, the unique magic system, and the characters. But I feel the magic system remains underdeveloped. I understood and accepted that in book one, thinking book two would give us answers — but we didn’t get any. We still don’t really know how it works or what it does (apparently, it just does everything). The main characters still don’t know how to control it, especially the FMC. It all feels very ambiguous and unstable.
The ending was definitely engaging, and it does make you want to jump right into the next book. But, honestly, I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series — maybe I will, maybe I won’t. It’s just that the taste it left in my mouth isn’t the most pleasant one to make me want to.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
The second book in the Ballan Desert Series picks up right where the first book left off, following Keera and Viper through more clan politics, horse riding and a sentient desert which is still very angry. If you’re into complex magic system, political intrigue, slow burn this might be great choice for you.
Personally, I struggled to connect with the main characters and found the magic system a bit hard to grasp. While the story itself is imaginative and has some compelling elements, it didn’t quite click for me. I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series.
Thank you NetGallley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and author for eARC. All opinions are my own.
I became obsessed with this world in the first book and after that crazy ending I couldn't wait for the sequel. So I was super excited to receive an ARC for the second book. And wow it did not disappoint!
Following the events at the end of the first book this story picks up immediately after. We see Keera hurt but recovering in Kelvadan after being separated from Erix while Erix himself is rallying the clans to come to Kelvadan. This separation killed me but the individual development we see from both characters when separated was super interesting to read about. Since this is a dual pov we see everything they go through in the first part of the book while still feeling the connection between them. I loved that we see Keera slowly become a Queen in her own right while Erix is really starting to step into his full potential. Once reunited there relationship further strengthens and grows making them such a united and powerful pair. I absolutely love their relationship!
The plot and world building continue to be a huge stand out for me. The writing is beautiful and continues to make this such an immersive world. Plus the side characters really play a large role in this book and I really enjoyed all of their roles in the book. Even the characters I didn't trust. The action and magic were again fantastic. I really enjoyed seeing more mythical creatures from the desert and I was enraptured by the history/story of the heart of the desert we finally learn more about. Overall this was a fantastic read and after that ending I am so excited for the third book!
I am obsessed with the book! I really enjoyed book one but book two was so much better.
The stakes are so much higher for Keera and Erix. The desert is still unhappy no one is safe. Both Keera and Erix have to do what they can to save the clans and the city.
I loved how much their relationship grew. They punched each other and neither would let the other fall. Their chemistry is still burning and the passion explosive.
We got some new minor characters that were definitely interesting especially one, whom I will not spoil.
The world and lore was still so interesting. It feels a little bigger and more complex without overwhelming the reader.
All in all I loved this book, even the cliffhanger ending. While I felt satisfied, I still need more!
If you enjoyed Blood of the Sands then pick this one up too! Both of which I highly recommend!
I was like ok great I know what the inevitable problem is they will have to overcome in the next book and SC Grayson did the most unhinged thing and completely UNO reversed me into a sobbing mess!
I absolutely adore Keera and Erix. Their character development both as seperate entities and in their relationship was absolutely phenomenal. They’re both such interesting, multi faceted people who find strength in each other’s flaws and uplift those around them.
I don’t even think I can speak on the side characters without absolutely obliterating the plot of this book but my love for them all has grown as well.
The Heart of the Desert may actually be found beating in my own chest with how much I adore this series.
Thank you to SC Grayson for the eARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
4.25 This was so good I was lucky enough to get the arc the author really is lovely this was a great sequel to blood on the sands but as usual the books ends leaving you wanting more keera has realky grown as a character and the viper ( Erix ) you just are left wanting more from him the spice is written well the whole plot was intriguing and in this we really see keera develop as she tries to overcome the issues she faces she really does fight for what she believes in and I love her passion she is so full of heart and I cannot wait to get a physical copy to annotate this author has out done herself again she knows how to tell a story and her character has depth and personalities you have to pick this up you will not be disappointed
I love this series so much! The tension is so amazingly tense!!!! Masked MMC, desert setting, magic and a forbidden romance…. This series has been so good, and I want more. I literally wouldn’t change a single thing about this book, and it really stands out as a unique atmosphere which was a great change of pace. Definitely one of my favorites, 5 out of 5 stars.
I love Keera, Erix and the desert world they live in!
This book was action packed, with new creatures to slay, finding the heart and finding each other. I was honestly shook with the plot twist at the end and it made it that much better.
Keera and Erix love for one another is so resilient, and I know together they’re going to make the series so great.
Thank you S.C. Grayson for the pleasure of ARC reading this book.
I am devastated to write I had to DNF this book. The MFC changed and was someone I couldn't tolerate any longer. I am sad about this because she was awesome in book 1. When she said she would follow the MMC in book 1 (as long as he didn't take over Kelvadan) and then proceeded to save him from his jailer, I thought this was some good stuff. Well, she does a 180 and the MMC becomes her dirty little secret and she won't sacrifice anything for him; yet, he gave up everything for her. I read other reviews to see if others felt the same way and they did. Bummer.
Book 1 was AMAZING and ended in a way I wrote a huge review about. I love when a book ends and the MCs are loyal to each other and believe in each other, no matter what others are saying. So, I thought entering this book we would see them continue to fight for each other, despite the rumors.
NOPE! The MFC immediately started playing the victim and became manipulative. She asked ZERO questions and made a ton of assumptions about the MMC. Book 1 set up a relationship where this should not have happened, so for the plot to shift immediately into this in book 2 was incredibly disappointing to me. What was the whole point of book 1 and building all that love, connection, and trust for her to just believe he left her. UGH.
The way book 1 ended and how this book was pitched, I thought this would be about the MFC showing her face in public as 100% for Kelvadan and the MMC showing his face in public as 100% for the Clans, but secretly they were aligning together behind closed doors making plans and deeply loving each other; yet, they were unsure of how to present a united front to the two very polarized groups of people they were with. I thought this was going to be a beautiful love story with intense complexities, but I was wrong 😭
Why I quit this book: 1. The MFC used the word "abandoned" so many times. Her parents and people abandoned her, they had power and status and could abandoned a child. However, an adult partner with equal status and power cannot abandon you. They can leave you, but not abandon. Also, why not assume good intention? Why not ask more questions about why he had not sent a message or come for you yet? Why not assume something bad happened to him and he couldn't reach you? Why not assume you needed to save him? Why not go talk to the person who typically receives messages? Why not seek him out (once you were healed)? Why not give him an inch of faith?
Then, she uses the word abandoned in attempt to manipulate the MMC to not follow his path 🤮 and stay in line with her expectations for him 🤢 🤮 This was double ick because she acknowledged in the jail that he had tried to get to her (didn’t abandon her) and he also felt abandoned by her. For her to later change the narrative to manipulate him… WHY!! I LOVED that the MMC called her out for all the BS she put him through and how much he sacrificed for her. She really didn’t get it and needed to be slapped on the face with this information, she SUCKED!
2. As I got further into the book I became even more disappointed. The MFC was an extremely hypocritical woman, this was the turning point for me to know this book was not for me. The MFC was mad the MMC brought her back to his Lord and she saw that as a betrayal, yet she can go back to Kelvadan and agree to be the heir and future queen? Her man was traumatized by the queen and her husband, so he left to not be the heir. She then falls in love with him and, behind his back, agrees to be the heir, taking his place? Yikes? Are you f**king kidding me? Talk about being a crappy person (if taking the lens of this love story. If looking at it from the Kelvadan lens only, then sure, she was doing the right thing, but this whole series was about NOT taking Kelvadan's lens only). Agreeing to be the heir and future queen was such a major betrayal to the MMC. They supposedly had this incredibly strong bond and she loved him, but she took on HIS role without even talking to him or truly even considering him in this decision. The direction of this was so gross to me and I immediately lost interest.
Of note, I thought the queen's rationale for making the MFC the heir was alright (not strong), but the hypocrisy of the MFC is what irritated me. She's mad the MMC was sticking to his agenda, but doesn't see anything wrong with her sticking to hers, even advancing her status? She's asking him to stop his cause for her but she wouldn't do the same for him? She became manipulative, only loving him because he gave into her. She got to be in control and make whatever choices she wanted, keeping moving forward with her goals, all at the sacrifice of his well-being. If he did what he wanted, she would have threatened that he didn’t love their bond enough (her internal dialogue at the beginning).
As I write this, I am so frustrated with how this story changed. The book proceeded and the MMC gave up everything for her, only to become the man she slept with in the night and no one could know. He was this fierce clan warlord and left all of it for their love/bond. She asked him to do that, and he did! He gave her everything she wanted and became half the person he was. What did she do: treated him like trash, took his inheritance without talking to him, AND accepted a marriage proposal from someone else (number 4 in this list). He gave up everything for their love and she gave up nothing, just took and took and took and manipulated. She could have said no sooooo many times, yet she didn’t. She literally wanted him to give up everything for her because of their bond (complained about that for the first 25% of the book), but she could not give a damn inch for him and their bond. What a hypocrite. Could you imagine if he took back his rights as the heir, got engaged to someone else for "political" reasons, and continued to be with the MFC, but only behind closed doors? She would feel betrayed and throw a tantrum, and so would us readers, we would be so angry! Well guess what, having the roles reversed where she is in power and treating him this way enraged me just as much.
I thought this story was supposed to be an epic love story and them being loyal to each other. Nope, the MFC "abandoned" him real f**king quick for power, justifying it as needing to save the people. Although her thoughts showed she cared for the MMC, her behavior did not. She, in many ways, just mimicked what his parents did to him (hiding him away, making decisions that hurt him, not willing to put him first, being mad at him for wanting his own path, expecting him to give himself, not caring how their behavior impacted his well-being). Her not having insight into her crappy behavior just made it so much worse because she was so mad at his parents. Wake up MFC, you were WORSE because you knew his history and did the same thing anyway!
I think why all of this bothered me so much was because the story is written like she was this thoughtful, selfless, and kind woman, but she wasn’t. She was a hypocritical, judgmental, manipulative woman holding onto a victim mentality, not truly caring about the impact of her actions on the MMC, who clearly was devoted to her; yet, she was deeply wounded when he did anything good for himself that didn’t align with her. 🙄
3. HE SURRENDERS TO HER and what does she do? PUTS HIM IN PRISON without talking to him. This was it for me. SHOCKER- she goes down to the prison, he tells her about how HER behavior demonstrated she "abandoned" him, yet he still fought for her because he loved her, and how he did try to get to her. IF SHE JUST WOULD HAVE BELIEVED IN HIM and asked some questions, she would have gotten information, preventing all the drama. The MMC's behavior and love was the LOVE STORY I WANTED. But, the MFC ruined that with her immature approach.
4. THEN the MFC chose to marry someone other than the MMC. The MMC literally leaves everything he stood for FOR HER, but she accepts another man's marriage proposal. She even considers how she can marry this other man, but be intimate with the MMC. Gross, so he gets to be her seconds/side piece after everything he gave up for her? DNF bye bye.
Using her rationale: when he was doing something she didn’t like that he thought was for the good of everyone, she thought that he loved her and their bond, but not enough to stop what he was doing and put her first. Therefore, when she chose to marry someone else for the good of the people and not for the MMC, clearly she loved him and their bond, but not enough. Obviously this isn’t true, but she can use that rationale against him, but never even considered to use it against herself? Therefore, back to point 2. Hypocrite!
If the MMC was in power and had gotten a marriage proposal, he would have denied it immediately. He would have been loyal to her. The MMC deserved so much better than the MFC. This won't happen because of the ending (I skimmed through it), but I wished the MMC got fed up with the MFC, left her, and found someone worthy of his love and devotion.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I adored The Blood of the Sands, so I went into this one with high hopes. The theme of leadership is really well explored, and I liked seeing different perspectives on what makes a good ruler.
Unfortunately, Crown of the Dunes didn’t quite deliver the same intensity for me and I wasn’t nearly as invested in the plot. The romance shifted from slow-burn Enemies to lover tension to more insta-love, with some good banter but not the same spark as book one.
Still solid in concept, but it didn’t hit as hard.
Thank you to Netgalley for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book is definitely one that requires you to gather your thoughts when you finish it. You can’t just continue living. You need to sit and process what just happened. This is a good thing in case you don’t know.
So very much happens in this book. It picks up right at the end of book one, following Erix and Keera as they heal (in separate places) both mentally and physically. Literally everything is going against them. The desert and the people in it are trying to do everything they can to keep the two apart.
While the two are separated, I feel the need to say that they aren’t even separated for half the book! I personally don’t love it when the love interests get separated because I always think the story stalls, so I wanted to point out that they aren’t separated long, and the story does not at all stall while they’re apart. In fact, so much happens while they’re apart that you really don’t notice until they mention one another.
This one is action packed. We’re battling monsters left and right, dealing with court intrigue, going on new adventures, planning heists (but not like a heist heist, more like a retrieval mission), and of course having midnight trysts.
The thing that dropped my rating from 5 stars to 4.5 is the fact that this book contradicted itself in points. I don’t want to get deep into this for the sake of spoilers, but at times, I would find myself questioning the order that events occurred or what was said before. It threw me a few times, so it ultimately caused my rating to drop.
I absolutely love the growth we see in Erix in this book. We see him start to cope with some of the abuse that is inflicted on him during and prior to book one. We are able to learn more about him as a person separate from the Viper. This book really cemented my love for him and made me want to protect him at all costs.
I found a large number of events surrounding Keera to be highly improbable for someone who was exiled for 10 years. Certain things happen that I just feel like wouldn’t happen to someone who was in isolation for a little under half their life. I also felt that unlike Erix, she didn’t really grow in this book but rather felt either stagnant or somewhat like she was going backward. We lose a lot of what made Keera charming in book one and are left with almost this shell of her. I can see the circumstances of the book making her this way, but I wish there was some of the old Keera left.
Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I will be reading the final book in the trilogy as soon as it is released.
Thank you very much to S.C. Grayson for providing me an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and are not influenced by the manner in which I received it.
Finally, the veil of the cliffhanger that SC Grayson left us with is lifted 🙏. This review is spoiler-free but contains things that are revealed in the first book.
Thankfully, we quickly learn about Keera's health and her recovery. At the end of book one, I was a little worried that we would have to deal with amnesia or mind manipulation by Aderyn or the queen, but thankfully that was not the case, and any missunderstandings where quickly resolved. While Keera is busy getting back on her feet, literally, Erix is busy uniting all the desert clans and bringing them across the chasm he hat torn in the sand during Keera's departure.
Crown of the Dunes focuses heavily on the political intrigues in Kelvadan and the seemingly impossible task of freeing the Heart of the Desert from the top tower room of the palace. I can't say any more about it, except that everything that can go wrong does go wrong 😮. And I'm damn proud of myself for figuring one thing out right at the beginning. 😂 (not that it helped)
Crown of the Dunes is full of emotion. Whether it's learning to let go, trusting others, embracing new things, feeling the pain of letting go of things that hurt you or even stand in the way of your own desires in the end. 😭
I love the love story between Erix and Keera. From the first moment they meet, something magical draws them to each other, and at the same time, their connection is hindered by every possible obstacle. How both are willing to sacrifice themselves so that the other can achieve what is best for the Ballan Desert, while at the same time giving everything to save each other and each other's hearts. At some points, I felt Erix's pain so deeply that I actually shed a tear or two with him 😢. Erix is absolute boyfriend material; he gives up everything and would even sacrifice himself to make everything possible for Keera. ❤️ I also love Keera, who slowly learns from her exile to trust others, but also to listen to herself and her gut feelings. Her balancing act between being a fierce warrior and a woman searching for a home is wonderful to read.
I can't wait to read how the story continues in the third book. Besides the obvious part with the heart of the desert, I'm curious to see how some things that have been set in motion here will be resolved.
If you like the following, the Ballan Desert series is an absolute must-read:
- enemies to lovers - hidden identity - betrayal and political intrigue - Romantasy - slow burn / forbidden romance - magical desert - he falls first - Touch him/her and 💀
Let me just say this upfront: Crown of the Dunes shattered me in the best possible way.
After book one (Blood of the Sands) hooked me with its scorching enemies-to-lovers slow burn and complex desert politics, book two came in hotter, messier, and even more emotionally charged.
This is Keera and Erix at war with the world, with themselves, and worst of all… with each other.
Keera is battle-worn, broken in places we can’t see, and so incredibly tired but still, she stands. She never asked to be Kelvadan’s Champion, and now that she’s earned the city’s shaky trust, she’s forced to decide: defend it… or betray it for the one person who ever truly saw her.
I love how her story doesn’t shy away from the trauma of what she’s been through. She’s fierce, but she’s also human. And watching her try to hold the line between love and duty? Devastating. And so real.
Erix (formerly the Viper)…..Now He's the One in Chains… Erix stepping into a leadership role? Not something I expected but oh, did it deliver. This man is spiralling, torn between loyalty to the desert, grief for his former mentor (despite how monstrous he was), and the loss of Keera, which haunts him in every scene. He’s no longer the ruthless enemy from book one. He’s unraveling, and the emotional whiplash of watching him try to become something better while the desert and his enemies test him at every turn? Chef’s kiss. And yes, I still simp for him. Harder than ever.
If book one was tension, book two is yearning. Erix and Keera are on opposite sides of a brewing war, and yet everything in them aches to find a way back. It’s forbidden, painful, and honestly so freaking intense. Every shared memory, every near-meeting, every time one speaks the other's name like it hurts? That’s my kind of heartbreak. And when they do collide again? You will feel it in your chest.
This isn’t just romantic tension, it’s two people who should be enemies, who keep choosing each other anyway. Over and over.
This is why I love romantasy. Crown of the Dunes gives us a world rich with lore, moral grey zones that make your brain hurt, and characters so achingly flawed that you root for them even when they’re tearing everything apart.
There’s no easy path in this story. Just sand, shadows, and two broken people trying to find each other in the storm. And I am so here for it.
Why do I keep doing this to myself?? I knew this book was going to break me and I STILL signed up for the ARC—and now I have to wait even longer than everyone else for book 3?? Tragic. Would I do it again? Absolutely. No regrets.
This book wrecked me in the best way. If book one was all about tension, book two is straight-up yearning. Keera and Erix are on opposite sides of a war, and yet everything about them aches to find their way back to each other. Every near-miss, every name spoken like it hurts, every memory? It’s my kind of emotional pain. And when they finally collide again? You feel it. In your chest. In your soul. I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
Erix stepping into leadership? Did not expect it, but oh it DELIVERED. He’s spiraling, grieving, haunted—and trying so hard to be something better while everything around him falls apart. He’s no longer the cold, calculating enemy from book one. He’s broken and complicated and messy, and yes, I still simp for him. Harder than ever. (As if I ever stopped.)
The romance is forbidden, painful, intense—just the way I like it. But there’s so much more going on, too. We get deeper into the politics of Kelvaden (which are shady and fascinating), while still getting glimpses of the desert clans from book one. The world expands in such a cool way and it’s just as rich and immersive as before.
The action scenes? Epic. The politics? Surprisingly gripping. The spice? SPYCING. There are multiple moments for Keera and Erix to get close—and yes, it’s hot.
Also, bless the author for not leaving us on a brutal cliffhanger. There’s closure (kind of), but enough setup that I’m already emotionally spiraling over what’s coming next.
Honestly, what makes this book hit so hard is the relationship between Keera and Erix. Their bond is so deep and raw, it hurts to watch. They should be enemies, but they keep choosing each other anyway—and you feel every second of it. I was fully invested, screaming internally (and sometimes externally), and completely wrecked by the end.
This book has it all: heartbreak, action, longing, political chaos, spice, and characters who are deeply flawed but so easy to love. I need book three like yesterday!!
Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for a copy of this e-arc.
I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 of this series but book 2 I was completely engrossed by! We have a mix of clan structure, court politics, understanding of power, demon monsters, unrequited love, and so much more!
Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off. Keera was taken back by the Kelvadan riders who attacked the united clans. After causing a chasm to save the clans, Erix discovers what saved them initially, has now stranded them all. Determined to get back to Keera, he does everything in his power to not only keep the clans together, but get back to her.
Keera now wakes up back in Kelvadan, with doubts in her mind of why Erix would have brought her back to Lord Alasdar. Even though she knows Lord Alasdar is dead, killed by her hand, why hasn’t Erix come for her? Or come to show he has no plans to eradicate Kelvadan any longer. Did he change his mind about her? The Queen is hesitant to believe that Erix is not a threat, but wants Keera to step up not only in her magic but in the ways she can help protect Kelvadan. She is thrown into the world of court politics she never intended to enter. But when Erix does finally return, who will he be to her? Her lover, a Prince coming to take back what’s his, or her prisoner? Enemies are all around and with the goal of returning the Heart of the desert to its rightful place and stabilizing everything and everyone, are they strong enough to make the right decisions and will their love survive all the obstacles thrown in front of them?
This book really drew me in. We got a little bit of everything. Court politics, clans, adventures, monsters, romance, family drama, arranged marriage, everything! While there were definitely certain plot points that were predictable, it still was a fun read.
Erix and Keera’s relationship is really complex in this book and it kept me on my toes. The spice 🌶️ kicked up this book (yay!) for sure. Erix and Keera’s connection is fire 🔥 we get sneaking around and a jealous Erix (oh, so feral 🥵🥵). Just, yes all around!
Book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but sets up what the next book’s plot/adventure is going to be and I’m excited for the next chapter of their story. Loved the epilogue! ❤️❤️
I was very lucky to receive a digital Arc copy from the author and I couldn’t have been happier about it.
Let me start by saying I absolutely loved the first book. It was gripping with characters who felt real, the trails aspect was fun, the world building and story telling were right up my ally. I definitely understand how this series gives serious Reylo vibes, if you are into the new age of the Starwars franchise.
This books opens in the aftermath of the previous books ending. One thing i did enjoy, was I didn’t have to do a reread to remember the events of the last book since it’s been some times between reads. Both Keera (FMC) and Erix (MMC) do a good job with recapping the events of the first book without being too longwinded with the details. A refresher is always nice.
We are introduced to the desert clans and their leaders as well as new notable characters in Keera’s perspective and you’d either love them or hate them. I personally had my eyes squinted and lips pursed anytime one of them had some page time.
Things I enjoy: the monsters - S.C. Grayson has a great way of writing her creatures and fight scenes. I have a vivid imagination and have no issues putting pictures to her words. The relationships - since we have gotten familiar with who is who in the first books, this second installment rounds about those relationships. We get tension, guilt, forgiveness, love, hard choices, and the consequences of those choices. The desert - mama is still pissed, she is still vengeful and she will not deliver any ounce of peace until she gets what she wants.
There wasn’t a lot I didn’t enjoy about this book. Maybe the way Erix is framed in this book? But I know it’s not without reason and we did get the reason as the book went on. Keep in mind this is a SECOND INSTALLMENT OF A TRILOGY, so my criticisms are low and will wait till the entire series is completed.
Overall I had a good time with reading this Arc and a huge “I F**king knew it” moment.
Will I be getting the physical copy?? Absolutely! Will I be getting a special edition of one is released late one? Damn right I will be!
Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this book with me !!!
“The desert wanted her Heart, and I wanted mine. Keera”
“There she was. My feral little fighter”
“I would sooner carve my own heart out than abandon you”
Oh. My. God. You will excuse my being speechless while I am trying to rally my thoughts and feelings to what this book oit me through. An emotional rollercoaster, bleeding magical sands created by the trials and tribulations of two people whom the desert itself is trying to separate. A love damned from the very beginning and yet blessed with a tether neither of them can deny. A kingdom on the brink of both civil war and starvation if the Desert does not get her Heart back. Two people who are desperately trying to get back to one another. A Viper who is ready to forsake everything he has been living to do just to get her back. An exiled who is in a position of power she was not expecting whole thinking that the only man she has truly grown to love has abandoned her. Erix and Keera will face it all in a combination of twists and turns that had me constantly at the edge of my seat and dying to read the next chapter. I couldn’t stop. If it wasn’t for unveiling the mystery that was to be solved to save the Desert, it was for my need to see these two souls reunited and see them release all the tension and frustration of their distance with some terribly enjoyable spicy times !!! I was so obsessed that my need to continue reading was overwhelmed by the necessity to make it last a bit longer so I delayed my experience. This author made magic happen with her fingertips while she was writing this story. She made me feel it all. And with THAT ending … let’s just say that this book is not out yet and I already need the next and final book in this marvellous trilogy !!
“Do not make yourself less for lesser men”
“And seeing you like this - untamed and coming undone under my touch - I would give up my sanity to keep you this way”
“The world will not survive the way I feel about you”
“My heart is yours, from now until the sands drink my blood. And even then, she will taste it and know that I belong to you”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡: 🐪 mint-spiced tea 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — simmering tension, desert magic, and emotionally charged moments 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Late summer / early fall — shifting sands, political storms, and shifting hearts 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝? ✅ Yes, absolutely—especially if you crave epic fantasy romance with grit and grandeur
📚 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐈𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞: •Epic desert fantasy with immersive worldbuilding •Strong, resilient heroines and morally complex heroes •High-stakes political intrigue and desert magic •Enemies-to-allies romance with deep emotional payoff •Slow burn love forged through trials and blood •Rich cultural detail and gorgeous, atmospheric settings
💭 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Crown of the Dunes is everything I didn’t realize I needed. Picking up right where Blood of the Sands left off, this sequel is darker, richer, and loaded with tension—both political and personal.
Keera’s journey from exile to champion is powerful and deeply earned. She grows into her power while navigating broken alliances and desert politics, and her transformation is truly inspiring. Erix’s arc is equally compelling: he wrestles with duty, revenge, and love, battling not just external enemies but his own internal conflicts.
Their slow-burn romance? Set in the sweeping dunes, fraught with tension, fierce loyalty, and moments of genuine tenderness. The chemistry is electric and the stakes are even higher. Every glance, every touch, feels like the desert itself is holding its breath.
The worldbuilding is lush. You can practically feel the heat rising off the dunes and taste the exotic flavors at market stalls. The magic is woven seamlessly into the culture and stakes, adding depth to every character interaction.
If you loved the intensity of Blood of the Sands, Crown of the Dunes elevates everything the romance, the intrigue, the world while deepening the emotional core of the story. I flew through this book, utterly absorbed from start to finish, and I’m so here for whatever S.C. Grayson cooks up next in this universe.
After the cliff hanger we were left on after Blood of the Sands, I wondered what direction we would go in, and I am still stunned at THAT ending.
After the events of the first book we are dropped into Keera in recovery and struggling to keep control and The Viper stuck on a plateau of his own making, unable to get to Keera. They are both separated from the one thing that would bring them peace. So they will be no one's peace, including yours or mine as the reader. In a number of increasingly risky moves, both Keera and The Viper are still on the mission of saving the desert, but what they do not yet realize is that they can only accomplish this together.
I did have some feeling of bloat around the middle of the book. I think there could have been some more tight editing, instead of circling the same issue about 10 different ways without feeling we are moving the story forward. In Blood of the Sands, I felt like there were very clear acts set in the story, however, what I believe to be Crown of the Dunes second act, lingers in a way that had me frustrated and ready to move on. I was definitely brought back in but that's what made it a 4 star over a 4.5 for me.
One of the choices that I particularly admire the author for making is not magicking away the physical evidence of the injury that Keera sustained at the end of the last book. Yes, they do heal a significant bit of the scarring, but there are several physical descriptions of her appearance that include the fact that a good portion of her body now has visible texture from her healed wounds and through most of the book, does not begin to regrow hair to the part of her head that was injured. I really respect this choice and am really happy to see that representation in a FMC.
I am anxious to see what is next for Keera and The Viper, especially after the way the author has left us at the end of this particular installment...
