Out in College #5

Ghiaccio Bollente (Out in College Serie Vol. 5)

Rate this book

Out on the Ice is book five in the Out in College series by Lane Hayes. This is Sky and Colby’s story. I’ve gotten bits and pieces of Sky in the previous books and had a preconceived opinion of him which may have tainted my acceptance of him going in to this book. As I got to know more of his story, though, I did come to understand him more.

Colby Fischer is twenty two years old and is going in to his fifth year as a senior at Long Beach State as a hockey player. He is roommates with Elliot who will get his own story in book seven. Colby signed up for a summer school class to make his last year easier but is having trouble concentrating due to a certain male student that is completely throwing him off course. He’s feeling all sorts of strange things, butterflies, hot flashes, strange bouts of arousal whenever he is near! He’s never been attracted to a guy before so why now? And why him?!

Sky Jameson is twenty three years old and is also a fifth year senior at Chilton College. He is a baseball player. Sky is the ex boyfriend of Max from the previous book. He and Max had a very tumultuous relationship which ended in Sky leaving and taking a semester off but he is back and trying to finish his degree. He is also taking the summer school class that Colby is in as well as being hired by Colby’s step father at his accounting firm to take Colby’s place when Colby starts school and his hockey season.

Colby is so thrown off course by everything he is feeling. And to top it all off, his step father has asked him to train Sky at work. It’s obvious that the attraction goes both ways and these two decide to start a sort of secret friends with benefits thing to introduce Colby to all the joys of being with a guy! We’ll just say that Colby is a great student. These two become pretty much inseparable as the weeks go by and of course, feelings grow. But they are both in the closet, Colby convinced that he can’t be an out hockey player.

The whole story is told from Colby’s point of view. So often I wondered what Sky was thinking. I liked who Sky was with Colby and felt so bad for him as I learned his story. Together, these two worked perfectly. But they both had a lot at stake so they needed to figure out just what they really wanted.

The next book, book six, is a hockey player/geek romance, Out in Spring, and I can’t wait to read it.

Book 5 in this series and I don't even remember the others. 😖 I just know I have had some winners and some losers in this series. This was just okay and kept me company so i can't complain much.

I really liked Sky. He was sweet and damn charming.

I ended up liking Colby, it took a while to warm upto him but i eventually did.

At this point, i am just listening to this series to finish it. I don't want leave another series halfway.

Overall it was an okay story. I ended up liking it.

Out on the Ice by Lane Hayes was what I needed to escape everything happening in the world today.

-Two college sports players, though, the main focus is hockey.
--The story is told strictly from Colby's POV, but we can get to know Sky's story and growth from his interactions with Colby.
-Bisexual discovery
-Hurt/Comfort/Healing
-It had an enemies to lovers/frenemies vibe at the start
-OFY
-Chemistry
-Character development
-Relationship development
-The resolution scene was adorable. ♥

This book was emotionally satisfying, and it had the perfect amount of angst. This may just be my favorite of the series. Colby and Sky's background stories pulled at my heartstrings and watching them grow as people made me happy.

Highly recommend it.

Honestly, I never thought even for one second I'd be able to like Sky. He was so fucked up in Out in the Field, I was shocked Lane was giving him a book. I just didn't know how he'd redeem himself.

I should have known better.

I ended up loving him.

I pretty much loved this entire story.

Colby was just so solid. He didn't think he was and he felt messy, but really, he was solid. He was a perfect match for Sky. Sky, who also was messy but strong.

I felt such a connection between the two of them and loved watching them fall.

Another fantastic read by Lane Hayes who is always a must read!

Brilliant! Loved!

Michael Dean narration was engaging and on point. He did a great job.

I enjoyed reading Out on the Ice because it :
💖Filled my heart with love , happiness , laughter and a positive attitude.
💖Made me fall in love with two likeable, gorgeous, honest , funny, perfectly imperfect heroes.
💖For few hours today, I let go of my worries and escaped to the world built by Ms. Hayes , for her Out in College Series.

Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories that are low angst, low drama, heart-touching , playful and hot AF .

To me this was better than book 3. But this book can be read on it’s own.

Sky and Colby two misunderstood hot heads that made it work. I loved their banter and how they slowly went from enemies to lovers.

I didn’t think Sky would redeem himself from the last book with Max, but I actually liked him a lot in this book! It took me more time to connect with Colby than Sky, I wished this book was in Sky’s POV but I am not mad about it being in Colby’s.

Ps..Kendra kinda sucked lol

Might read Elliot’s story, he sounded like he needs a HEA!

Colby Fischer lives for hockey. School and family are obligations he puts up with. He’s fairly got it together - except for the one thorn in his side in econ class. Things take an interesting turn when said thorn, Sky Jameson, turns out to be the new intern at Colby’s step-dad’s accounting firm.

For his part, Sky’s more than happy to tease the straight boy who won’t stop looking at him. He doesn’t expect much to come of it. But the pull can’t be denied.

I didn’t think I’d like Sky, after his less-than-impressive behaviour in previous books. But I actually warmed up to him pretty easily!

Part of it was that we finally see things from Sky’s perspective and get his background story. But mostly it was the fact that he’d matured a lot, and accepted that his actions were wrong. Character growth!

In fact, I found Colby a bit harder to get used to. He has a massive chip on his shoulder, and his treatment of his step-dad was incredibly childish. He was likeable over time, but it took some convincing.

Regardless, I really liked the set-up to Colby and Sky’s story. Nothing like a misunderstanding and some mutual dislike with a strong undercurrent of physical attraction to really make things interesting.

And these two delivered, once Colby decides to give in! While Colby does have doubts about his attraction to a man, he was pretty open to giving things a try.

I thought Sky was the perfect tutor. He respected Colby’s boundaries and didn’t try to push him into anything he wasn’t ready for.

And while the two explored their intense attraction, they slowly developed a friendship beyond the physical. They bonded over mutual interests and shared dreams.

I thought it was very sweet that the two didn’t second guess making time for casual dates and just hanging out together. And that they both acknowledged when their feelings became deeper.

But inevitably their relationship in the closet hits a wall. It was predictable, but the resolution and Colby’s grand gesture were cute regardless!

Overall, I enjoyed ‘Out on the Ice’. If you’re looking for a well-narrated audiobook of a fairly simple and sexy romance, give this a try!

Full review tomorrow when I'm at the laptop.

Lane is so good at writing new age romance, she seems to have a knack of getting inside the minds of young men just beginning to branch out into life at college.

This, the fifth in this excellent series, was a bit more slow paced than some of the others and I think the story benefitted from that.

Last seen, Sky was having a bit of a crisis in book four as his world fell apart around him.

Here we don't see inside his head but that of Colby, an ice hockey player who knows he's probably not good enough to go pro but who's holding on to his sport fof dear life.

I loved the way this story meandered around a couple of different plot points and gently made its way to them falling in love.

Very little unnecessary angsting, good communication and great chemistry made it an enjoyable read.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/ 5 Stars. Rounding up for cuteness reasons. 🤷🏻‍♀️🥰
🔥🔥🔥.5/5 Heat

He crinkled his nose and made a funny face. “I don’t really like cake.” I gaped at him until he busted up laughing. “That’s… disturbing. Are you gonna tell me you hate puppies and pickles too?” Sky threw his head back and guffawed. “Puppies and pickles?”

Prior to reading this, if you told me I would come to love Skye, I would have told you that you sat on a throne of lies. Because he was kind of the worst in the last book. But Lane Hayes worked her magic here and made Skye not just tolerable but positively dreamy. In fact, I struggled with Colby more but he grew on me eventually and him and Skye were perfection.

I read this in a few sittings. Work has continued to be slow and so I continue to read like it’s my second job. This was a very low angst, lovely bisexual/out for you book with a dash of enemies to lovers. Although I wouldn’t really call them enemies. It’s more there was an initial misunderstanding that put them briefly at odds. I do wish we had also gotten Skye’s POV. Dual POVs normally work better for me. That’s my minor issue. Not a deal breaker in any way.

Lane Hayes has become a favorite of mine. I have yet to read all of her books. But I’ve enjoyed most of the ones I’ve read so far. This series and the, “Starting From,” one have been the most enjoyable for me. She’s very good at bringing the feels without making it too heavy. Her books have guys who talk things out with minimal drama and they’re fun! And sometimes that’s just what I need. 💜

reading time: 1.5 hours
* didn’t really like the excessive use of foul language and also the lack of significant character development
* enjoyed the banter between the two MCs and Colby’s discovery about himself
* the kind-heartedness of Sky was cute
* felt like the plot wasn’t very major, which caused me to not really like this book
* almost dnfed but pulled through 😔

Cute enough…

It took me a LONG time to warm up to one of the MCs.
It wasn’t me.
It was him.
By his own admission he was an a**.
I agreed.

Still, it was a cute/angsty bi-awakening, enemies to lovers.
If you like hockey, you won’t find much of it here, though.

Really enjoyed this installment.

The POV we get in this is of Colby, a 22 year old hockey player in his 5th year of college who believes he's straight...except in his summer class there's this guy, Sky...who he develops a total crush on...and when Sky gets a job at Colby's stepfather's accounting firm where Colby interns during the summer, they grow closer, and Colby finds that he's not so straight after all.

I do wish we had gotten Sky's POV, but I loved what we got of him in this. Before this he was not so much a "villain" as a seemingly not to great guy, but in this we get to see him humanized in a way he wasn't before and really understand why he was behaving how he was. And he owns up to how he acted as well.

I loved Colby and Sky's chemistry, it was great and passionate and they were magnetic together. Colby at first was a tad frustrating with his clear internalized homophobia, but he does actually grow pretty quickly and comes to terms with his bisexuality pretty soon as well. I didn't quite get his anger at Harry, his step father either, although it became more understandable the more we got to know Colby and his feelings.

This was a great installment, I definitely recommend it, especially for those who are curious about who Sky falls for and how Hayes redeems him.

Two thumbs up from me!

March has been a month of redemption stories for me it seems. Some of my favorite authors have taken characters who really didn't make the best first impressions as side characters and have turned them into ones I really care about- Sky being one of them! I love when what we thought we knew about a character is turned upside down, once we really get a chance to know them.

I really liked Colby and Sky. I thought they were so good with each other and for each other. They were both struggling with family issues and I loved how they were able to lean on each other and be there for the other. There were some emotional parts in this story that really tugged at my heartstrings. I liked that there wasn't a whole lot of angsty drama, even with some of the things they both had to deal with.

I love this series of books and characters Lane Hayes has created. A lot of the characters overlap and it's nice to revisit some of the couples. Out of any of these books, though, I think Out on the Ice is one that can be read as a standalone. Yes, you do meet Sky in Out in the Field, and his ex does pop up in this one, but this book really does stand on its own.

I just can’t not give this one 5 Stars.
Sky and Colby were everything I needed, specially on these depressing times.
We already met Sky on Max’s books, and I couldn’t have asked for a better book for him!
Sky and Colby were literally Ying and Yang, two puzzle pieces that completed the most amazing relationship in the world. I fell in love right along with them. It was wonderful, and real, and I may have cried, but I wouldn’t change anything about this book!
Simply amazing! And so so SWEET! Gahhh all the feels right now.
Lane has become a one-click author for me, she never misses!

I loved Colby and Sky! I’m a big fan of bisexual/gay discovery stories. Colby thinks he is straight, except he can’t stop checking out Sky, the gorgeous guy in his summer class. When they start working together, they can’t resist each other.

I loved Sky so much, and I hated truly hated him in the last two books. He was just perfect here, and we get a better understanding of why he was an asshole in the past. Colby is pretty cool too.

Fun, cute and sexy once again! Great college sports series!

Spoiler-Free Review

Can Out on the Ice be read as a standalone, since it's the fifth installment of the Out in College series? Sure can. Without zero confusion. Easily read as a standalone. However, the previous narrator was the connective character in the series, but it won't add/lessen the emotional attachment to the characters, unless you want to meet Sky earlier and experience some of the drama.

Our hockey star, Colby is sexually deadened, is the best way of putting it. He just hasn't felt the spark, but has felt something towards females in the past. He is far too interested in a newcomer in Econ class during the summer session. A little bit aggressive, equally confused, a bit of a PitA when it comes to his super nice stepfather, Colby is struggling to find a path through life after losing his dad when he was a teen.

Our baseball star, Sky was the confusing one for me. In the beginning, he comes off as kind of lighthearted and flighty, but Hayes wrote him as serious and focused during monologues. Sky was the one to pull Colby out of a funk, make him live life, and see the bright spots, after his own drama. Sky's behavior didn't match up with what I was reading at some points, confusing me, and sometimes making me wonder if I wasn't getting the pair mixed up. Like Colby thinking Sky is the serious one, when I felt Sky more of a temperament of the stepdad/boss, even with his family drama and what was shown previously.

In the beginning, the attraction did feel forced, really In Your Face and Out of Nowhere. But as the novel flowed by, Colby and Sky really did seem to naturally click, a good balance for one another.

Out on the Ice is a good installment in the series, providing the backdrop of sports, the perils of coming out in college athletics, while understanding one's own sexuality. A nice bit of angsty deliciousness, warm and fuzzy romance, smoking hot between-the-sheets action, and a coming out story.

There was a bit of zany tossed in for good measure, where you need to suspend belief, because the fake girlfriend who just wouldn't go away provided some drama, thankfully not between the guys with manufactured misunderstanding/miscommunication, but I found it a hard pill to swallow, like a woman would be so flighty/pushy/lack proper boundaries/not take no for an answer/ while also be ridiculously idiotic, giving my gender a bad name. Are women really like that? I'm sure we could find one or two, but I hope not.

Highly recommend to fans of the author, series, and MM Sports romance. I look forward to whatever Lane Hayes publishes in the future, a nice afternoon escape.

Audiobook Review:
Performance 5
Story 5

Michael Dean gives another fantastic performance!

Michael Dean (FKN Michael Pauley) is one of my favorite audiobook performers. His performance of Out on the Ice really added to my enjoyment of the book. He has done an outstanding job with all of the books in this series.

Below is my original review from when I first read the story.

I have loved every book in this series and Out on the Ice is no exception. Each book stands alone, and can be read in any order, but characters from other books make appearances. This story is about Sky and Colby, told from Colby's POV. Sky was not so nice in a couple of the others books and I love it when a hated character gets redeemed in his own book.

Colby is a hockey player with a lot of stuff from his past that causes him pain and anger. He's pretty much learned to control the anger but every now and then he slips. When he catches Sky cheating off his paper during a test, he kind of loses it and ends up being the one accused of cheating by the TA (teaching assistant).

Sky tries to tell Colby that he wasn't cheating but he doesn't want to hear it. Colby is really confused by his reaction/attraction to Sky because he's straight and has never reacted this way to a guy before. Tempers flare and the next thing Colby knows he's kissing Sky and he's never kissed a guy before.

At first Colby thinks he's just bi-curious but that doesn't last long and he admits that he has feelings for Sky. But he's scared to come out to his parents and his hockey team and Sky isn't out either.

I loved this story so much. We learn all of the reasons why Sky was such a jerk in the earlier books he appeared in and I really felt bad for him. Colby runs a little hot and cold. One minute he hates Sky and the next he's kissing him. His feelings about his attraction to Sky really have him confused.

I could feel the connection between these guys so much. There were so many feels in this story and by the time I got to the end I was bawling my eyes out. They were mostly happy tears but there were a few sad ones, too.

I was so happy to learn that there will be more stories in this series and I can't wait to read them.

A copy of this audio book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Sky was a bit of a villain in a previous book but boy was he misunderstood. I had such empathy for him learning his backstory. When Colby and Sky meet there are fireworks and a bit of a love/hate BUT that quickly changed and then they just clicked together. Their chemistry and genuine goodness towards each other was great to see develop into deep love and understanding.
The side characters were awesome too. I loved Harry, Colby’s step-dad. Such a truly lovely human.

This series has been amazing! I’m glad it continues into volleyball now with Elliot’s story!
I cannot wait to read that one!

ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review

OMG, I was in love with these 2 guys! I just finished reading this and it has left me feeling all warm and happy! Lane Hayes is a very talented author and she always delivers story's that make me feel like this.
Though part of a series, this book can be read as a standalone. I know for sure, because I shamefully have to admit that the other books in this series are still waiting on my TBR pile. This book has made me curious enough, so I just have to make sure to pick one of them up a.s.a.p.

I loved Colby. He was a great character; hurt and scarred in the past, but braver then he thought he ever could be. The ice was his happy place, he lived for hockey, wanted to make his dad's dream come true and become a pro. But, as often the case, life had other plans.
He meets Sky. Sky is just a sweet guy beneath all this tough exterior he puts on at first. He is hurt as well, rejected by his parents after he came out and quite literally alone in the world. I loved him too, and like Colby, I wanted to scream at his parents for deliberately losing the chance to see their son grow up to be the person he became only just because he was 'different'.
I really enjoyed their banter, specially when they first met, when they still act like they don't like each other but as a reader you already feel their chemistry and an attraction that can't be denied. They fit well together, I loved watching them grow as a couple and I was sóóó happy there wasn't any unnecessary drama. For one moment I was afraid the author would go there when she introduced Kendra, and though I didn't really like her character for being around this long, in the end she was the (unintended) catalyst to Colby's and Sky's eventual HEA.
I liked the secondary characters, being Colby's mom and Harry. I loved when, in the end, Colby turns to Harry and we learn a little more about how their relationship developed and about the kind of person Harry is. I just wish all kids around would have that much luck with a new stepdad!

So yes, this is a happy read, very highly recommended for a lazy Sunday afternoon or a day at the beach. I loved it.
