I love a fun holiday themed cozy mystery with a dash of romance set in a small seaside town. Venus Bixby is one my favorite amateur sleuth, and her character is super fun - the girl next door with a mission. The murder mystery has some pretty good twists that kept me guessing and turning those pages.
This is the second book in the Venus Bixby mystery series. I have not read the first book, but did still enjoy this one. Its a cozy mystery taking place in Chatham Crossing. On Thanksgiving weekend when all of the holiday festivities are starting, the beloved mayor collapses and dies at the tree lighting. A week later the details of what caused his heart attack come to light. Venus Bixby who is busy opening her kitty daycare decides she needs to help with the investigation once her cookie bakery seems to be linked.
Although it took a bit to get to the actual mystery part, I really enjoyed this whole small town and the vibes. The characters added a good amount of entertainment to get me to that mystery poin. This authors writing is easy to follow and I really enjoyed it. The murder mystery was fun and I enjoyed reading about the people in the town even when they weren't the most likeable. Definitely a solid read.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and Suzy approved book tours for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
Valerie Taylor, the Author of”Switched at Death” has written a captivating and intriguing cozy mystery. This is the sequel to “”A Whale of A Murder”, but can be read by itself. The genres for this delightful and enjoyable cozy mystery novel are Women’s Friendship Fiction, Sister’s Mystery, and Romance. I love that the author provides recipes of cookies and other baked goods in the back of the book, as well as a playlist of many of the songs that I grew up singing, and still do. In this well-written novel, the author vividly describes the scenery, the plot, and dramatic and colorful characters. The characters are describes as complex, complicated, quirky, dysfunctional, and suspect.
The protagonist of the story is Venus Bixby, a widow and owner of a music store “Oldies & Goodies” There is also the “Bixby Bakery” in the store. Venus does have aspirations to be on the town council. Many of the same characters are in this story, and there are some new ones. Venus Bixby uses the reward money from the first book to establish a Kitty Daycare Service. It is around the holidays, and Venus’s twin sister and family have arrived to visit. At the tree lighting in town, there is a fire, and the Mayor dies of a heart attack. Further investigation indicates there was faulty electrical wiring that caused the heart attack. This was either an accident or a murder.
Both Venus and her sister begin to make a list of suspects. Some of them are close to Venus. There are twists and turns, betrayals, secrets, vandalism, and danger, jealousy and competition. I highly recommend this enjoyable mystery.
Twins, Venus, and Sherrie are at it again! While celebrating Thanksgiving at Chatham Crossing, their mayor collapses during the town's tree lighting ceremony.
Venus is busy running her kitty daycare, so she isn't sure if she will be getting involved in the mayor's death once information starts to come out that it may have been a murder. But, once her cookie bakery is involved in his death, she has nothing left to do but try to figure out who the killer is.
This cozy murder mystery is atmospheric and full of many characters that are very different and often times complex. The small-town vibe really brings to life this town and their day to day. I really enjoyed the book and it's characters though they weren't always well behaved or charming.
Venus Bixby is at it again. Switched at Death delivers everything you want in a cozy mystery: small-town charm, quirky characters, a suspiciously dead mayor, and yes, cats. Honestly, what more could you ask for?
Set during the most wonderful time of the year, the story kicks off with a tree lighting that goes up in flames—literally. Mayor Simon drops dead, and while everyone’s still humming carols, the whispers start: was it a heart attack… or something more sinister? Spoiler alert: it’s the latter.
Venus is busy launching her adorably named kitty daycare, Cats and Their Cradle, but when her bakery gets dragged into the drama, she trades cookie cutters for clues. Alongside her snarky sister Sherry, Venus unravels a web of secrets that’ll make you side-eye your neighbor’s fruitcake.
The pace is snappy, the humor light, and the clues cleverly tucked in between cups of cocoa and feline shenanigans. It’s a festive, furball-filled whodunnit. If you’re in the mood for a little murder with your mistletoe, and like mysteries served with sass and sugar, Switched at Death might just be your next binge-read. Just don’t trust anyone at the tree lighting, okay?
Venus, who has her hand in multiple pots in her town, is focused on getting her kitty daycare business up and running. When she is invited to a special dinner around Thanksgiving, she suspects her new project will be lauded. She is sorely disappointed when there is nary a comment from the mayor and his wife, a frenemy of Venus if there ever was. Venus thinks this is her best friend. It brings to mind the old saying- with friends like these who needs enemies. Alas and alack Venus’ project takes a back seat when the mayor is killed at the lighting of the Christmas decorations. Was it just bad luck or was there a motive behind the tragedy.
Once Venus starts to investigate, one of the suspects is someone near and dear to her. While she does not want to think badly of this person, the evidence seems to point in that direction. She does not, however, see the blazingly obvious suspect who does turn out to be the villain. I had that one pegged very early in the book. I don’t mind that if the book has me doubting my suspicions a few times before the big reveal. I never wavered. So I was a bit disappointed in it.

Calling all my cozy mystery fans! I am kicking off my weekend by helping to kick-off the Switched At Death Book Tour! Valerie Taylor brings us to the cozy little Cape Cod village of Chatham Crossing at the height of the Christmas holidays to uncover what REALLY happened when the mayor dies at the annual tree lighting festival 😳.
A nice break from some of my more serious reads, I enjoyed seeing the story through Taylor's FMC's, Venus Bixby, first person perspective. I loved the family, romantic, and friendship dynamics Taylor created with her varied cast of characters. The even bigger bonus? - All of the fabulous holiday cookie recipes included! Having not read the first installment in the Venus Bixby series, I felt it took a while to get invested in both the story and the characters, so I will be setting off to read the first - A Whale of A Murder. Overall, Switched At Death is an easy, quick enjoyable read!
Thank you to @valerieetaylor and @suzyapprovedbooktours for my gifted physical copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a good story. It just took quite some time to pick up and actually have a murder. I think I was near to or past the halfway point before there was even anything remotely close to a mystery/murder. I think if you read the first book, which I didn't, you would probably be a lot more into the stories of the characters rather than that of the mystery. I learned a whole lot about each character and feel like I know them well but felt a little less in tune with the mystery. That said, this is a fun story. It takes place in smaller town during the holidays though, aside from a big Thanksgiving meal, they really don't feature all that often. They are 100% necessary for the story but not a big feature when it comes down to it. I can't give things away here so I'm trying to be very careful in how I explain certain things! The writing is fun in this book. I like the author's style. It's sort of an easily readable and relatable style. The story flows well for the most part and it does start to pull you in as the story goes on.
I did not realize this was the second book in a series but I had no problems reading it! This was such a fun quick read and also perfect for holidays! I would describe this as a cozy mystery.

Will Venus's clever sleuthing be enough to save Christmas for this charming seaside town?
Venus Bixby is back, and it’s beginning to look a lot like . . . another suspicious death. In Chatham’s Crossing, the annual Christmas tree lighting is a beloved tradition—until this year, when the tree bursts into flames and Mayor Simon Duffy meets his untimely demise amidst the twinkling lights and festive music. Switched at Death, the second in Valerie Taylor’s Venus Bixby Mysteries, is rife with quirky, unforgettable characters and quick-witted dialogue. From the head of the Town Committee hoping to replace Simon as mayor to Venus’s hunky love interest, no one escapes the Sisters’ List of Suspects as amateur sleuths Venus and Sherrie dig up secrets, grudges, and motives. Taylor keeps the reader guessing in this page-turner that balances small-town quaintness with the intrigue of a whodunit. No matter the season, fans of cozy mysteries will love curling up with this delightful blend of suspense, humor, and charm that Taylor’s fans have come to expect.
While you don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one, I felt like it did focus on the relationships between the different characters a little more than the first. Venus was dealing with some insecurities but she approached them with reason and logic before overthinking too much. I was happy the dynamic between Venus and her sister continued in this first book. I enjoy the approach they take when trying to solve the mysteries in Chatham Crossing. It was cozy with just enough turmoil in the town to keep me guessing. I thought I knew who but couldn’t figure out why but I was wrong on both accounts. I look forward to seeing what mystery Venus gets involved with next.

The town’s beloved mayor is dead. When it’s determined that it wasn’t an accident, Venus and her twin sister, Sherrie, set out to solve the crime. Turns out there are several suspects. Then, the cookie bakery is demolished but the rest of the shop isn’t. Who would want to kill the mayor and is the same person responsible for destroying the cookie bakery?
A fun whodunit about friendship, jealousy, lies, and more. I had my suspicions, and it turns out I was right, at least about part of it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a local bookstore and picked this up. It reminded me a little bit of an Elin Hildebrand book, but with a made up town and in mystery style, lol I loved the short chapters and even though there were a lot of characters, it was very easy to keep everybody Straight. I kind of guessed the ending, so there was no huge twist. The only thing I really didn't love was the humor that was sprinkled throughout about the actual death. And the wife of the mayor didn't seem too broken up about her husband's demise. That was a little strange to me. And at one point, she was my main suspect because of her lack of reaction.
This is the second book in the Venus Bixby Mystery Series but can be read as a standalone.
The Mayor of the small seaside town of Chatham Crossing suspiciously dies at the annual tree lighting ceremony on Thanksgiving and everything goes up in flames. Much to the dismay of the local detective, Venus and her twin sister make their Sister's list of Eyewitnesses that includes people on the town council and even Venus's love interest Budd. The duo dig up secrets, grudges and motives. I loved this cast of quirky characters and the mystery kept me turning the pages. There is even a playlist and cookie recipes at the end of the book. I am looking forward to the next Venus Bixby Mystery!
This is the second book in the Venus Bixby cozy mystery series and I think you get the most enjoyment after reading book 1. This takes place around the Thanksgiving/ Christmas holiday. Venus is also opening a kitty daycare service in town.
We got to revisit the town and its people and it was great to catch up. It took a bit for the dead body to show up but when it does, Venus right away wants to solve what happened... even at the frustration again of the Sheriff. But I love that this time, he's just like "all right.. you can help investigate" because he knows Venus won't just sit back 🤣
Coming off a few darker reads (I’m looking at you, Armstrong) this book is exactly the palate cleanser I needed.
It doesn’t matter that it’s June. It doesn’t matter that I hadn’t read the first of the series. It doesn’t matter that cozy mysteries aren’t my normal fare.
With its quirky, robust characters, its small-town tropey goodness, and its low-stakes murder mystery, this book came at the perfect time.
I’m immediately tracking down Whale of a Murder for the next time my soul needs a literary breather.
This is the second installment in the Venus Bixby Mystery series and it was so fun to revisit Chatham's Crossing and all of it's intriguing inhabitants. There's another mystery to solve and I loved the twists and turns in the story. One of the things that makes these books so special is the characters. There's something a bit charming and quirky about all of them and I love the smalltown vibes. It's a fun entertaining read that will leave you smiling.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
This well-plotted story is the second in a series. It’s also the first one that I’ve read. I don’t think I missed anything by having read the book out of order.
I enjoyed the story itself, but I thought everything moved much too slowly. This isn’t an intricately plotted book. I also didn’t care much for the characters and I had trouble keeping all of them straight. I suspect that as more books are read, the characters’ idiosyncrasies would become apparent. I probably won’t continue this series.
SWITCHED AT DEATH was a fun read! Valerie Taylor did a great job on this very charming story. As a lover of both Christmas and cats myself, I could absolutely appreciation those two themes. It gave me instant cozy mystery vibes and I really enjoy this genre every now and then!
Many thanks to Valerie Taylor for my gifted copy.
This review will be shared to my Instagram account (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the future.
Venus Bixby is back at it again, in this next mystery set around Christmas events in Chatham Crossing. When the mayor suddenly dies suspiciously, Venus starts investigating. I really enjoyed the first book, and this was another great cozy mystery. There are cookie recipes and a playlist to go along with it. If you love cozy mysteries don't miss this one.
This was a charming and quick read that delivers a solid cozy mystery. There were several red herrings that kept you guessing into the end, and the characters are well defined and developed making them relatable and feeling more like a visit with friends then just a quick read.
Switched at death is a unique and entertaining read with a clever take on life after death. Twists kept me guessing, and the characters had just the right mix of drama and charm. Valerie Taylor does a great job blending mystery with heart- definitely worth the read!
Another wonderful novel from Valerie Taylor! Some familiar characters reappear in this one, and the mystery is just as compelling as in the first Venus Bixby novel. This is an enjoyable light read, highly recommended.
A fantastic follow up to "A Whale of a Murder" (can be read as standalone). I truly enjoyed reading more about the shenanigans and adventures surrounding Venus Bixby. I'm excited for what's next in this fun series. Perfect for summer reading.
Small town secrets + a cozy murder mystery? Count me in!
In Switched at Death, the mayor drops dead at the Thanksgiving tree lighting, and Venus Bixby finds her bakery caught in the crossfire. With quick wit and small-town charm, this mystery is layered with oddball characters and festive chaos.
This was so tedious! I almost closed this book at a third of the way through, but since I always read and watch things no matter how horrible they are... I plugged on. This was just not worth my time!
Cozy, small town murder mystery with meddling sisters determined to solve the case. The Sisters’ list of suspects makes a second appearance but in a very cozy, holiday wrapping. Grab some cookies and a nice hot coco to cuddle up and read this. Bonus: Cookie recipes included!
This second book in Valerie Taylor's Venus Bixby cozy mystery series is a fun read from a very talented writer; complete with New England charm, off-beat characters, and a compelling plot.
