Pace yourself, I say to my legs, you ve got a long way to go. I will keep on running, not running away but running towards, towards a future that I construct for myself, with my own bare hands. One day, Mummy will be proud of me the way Daddy never could be. He could only see a wiley child with a brain that could outwit him but not out-hit him. Maybe one day, Mummy will come to see a clever daughter as a blessing not a curse.
But in the end, it doesn't really matter. In the end, I'm on my own. Were all on our own, coming into this life kicking and screaming, ready to write a letter to the Times about the indignity of it all, the blood and the guts, the squeezing and the pain. I can write now; I can walk and talk and I can tell my own story.
