Uptown Love #1

The New York Charm

Rate this book
The past wasn’t supposed to follow her to New York. Neither was he.

Dylan Jenkins was ready to start fresh in New York City—until fate (or bad luck) sat her next to Parker Townsend on the flight out. Her ex. Her first love. The man she spent years trying to forget.

But Parker isn’t just back in her life. He’s the editor behind the debut author Dylan has been assigned to promote, forcing the two to work together closely—too closely—for the next few months.

Late-night meetings, book tour mishaps, and a city filled with second chances make it impossible to ignore the past. The spark between them? Still very much alive. The pain that tore them apart? Just as real.

Dylan swore she’d never make the same mistake twice. Parker is determined to prove she won’t regret it.

In a city built on stories, is theirs ready for a new chapter—or is history doomed to repeat itself?

I was halfway through writing a FIRE review and my phone died. Let’s see if I can live up to what I originally wrote. 😅

Ugh I love these characters and this story so much. I quite literally could not get enough of it!

Dylan Jenkins accepts a job as a marketing assistant and is headed to New York for a fresh start. All is looking up until the universe decides to intervene and sit her next to her ex-boyfriend, Parker Townsend. The very one that she has spent YEARS trying to get over. At least it’s just a two hour flight, right??

Within a week of employment Dylan is put on the book marketing campaign for an up & coming author that could determine the fate of her career. With her head held high & her head full of ideas, Dylan walks into the pitch meeting on cloud nine. That is, until she runs smack dab back into reality when she sees none other than Parker sitting across the conference room.

For the next few weeks, Parker and Dylan have to closely work together on this campaign as a editor/marketing duo to get this book launch off the ground and prove to their respective executives they have what it takes.

Dylan and Parker are forced to face their past and work together in this steamy, heartfelt romance set in gorgeous New York City.

I LOVED everything about this one. The pacing, the storytelling, the conflicts. EVERYTHING. The tension was palpable, the relationships were beautiful, and the anxiety representation was so real. I’m sorry my brain is going a mile a minute trying to get out all I want to say. I personally do not have an immediate family member that suffered from addiction as Dylan’s mom did, but seeing their relationship on the other side of hardship and how they got through it was beautiful.

There was the perfect amount of spice and boy did it deliver. 🥵

I cannot wait to see what Riley has in store for Blake 😍 (she had me at “…and Blake does as he’s told, just like a dog.” YES PLEASE)

5⭐️ riley can WRITEEEEEE Y’ALL

this book felt like a shot of serotonin injected straight into my heart 💘 it’s so warm and fuzzy and feel-good with an unexpected depth of emotion running through it

bring back true rom-coms ‼️ reading this book reminded me of what it felt like to be 13 years old watching my favorite 2000s rom-com and dreaming of the day that i’d be grown up and experiencing that kind of love for myself (tbd)

parker and dylan’s story just swept me up in the whimsy, the magic, the unabashed way that every little thing was simply romanticized to the fullest….i can’t say enough good things. if anyone had walked by while i was reading this they would’ve called the Goofy Police on me for having the goofiest smile on my face the entire time

riley girl thank you so much for trusting me with an ARC of your book🫶🏽 i’m not the biggest romance girlie out there but this book just recharged my little hopeless romantic battery 😭

it’s SHOCKING that this is riley’s debut novel because it reads like a NYT bestseller, and i’m not exaggerating. as soon as i get my grubby little hands on a physical copy on March 18th, it’s going right up there next to my Emily Henry, Abby Jimenez, Ashley Poston, and Hannah Bonam-Young books 🫡

If you love romcoms this is the perfect romance for you 🤍🗽

I haven't stopped thinking about Dylan & Parker since finishing. This setting, the cast, the humor, just the overall vibes are impeccable.

Riley put magic in this. It transported me into my favorite 2000s romcom where I'm strolling down the streets of NYC, grabbing a coffee with my bubbly roommate on my way to a job where the boss is honestly a witch but I'm still giving it my all because I KNOW I'm good at this. This is Devil Wears Prada x The Proposal x When Harry Met Sally x all your other favorite romcoms I promise!! 🩷

I adored the anxiety representation in this, I loved their backstory and how absolutely down bad Parker is (as he should be). I'm a sucker for second chance romance anyway but sometimes those can make you feel anxious or uncomfortable - not here. Parker & Dylan have such amazing chemistry that this just feels like a HUG 🥹

Oh and can't forget about MY BABY my absolute favorite character ever, my himbo king, my Barney Stinson ordered from Wish, my POOKIE: Blake 💗💗💞💕💖💝

Do NOT miss this debut. You'll regret it. This is funny, romantic, spicy at the right times ("You're going to have to earn them"?????? I still think about that scene) and just heartwarming.

A million stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you for trusting me with this Riley I love you and your characters so much 😚

(I have spiraled and made multiple playlist and collages and posts about these people. Like they're my babies. I'm not playing around ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR IMMEDIATELY ‼️)

DEBUT NOVEL WHERE????
I absolutely adored this!!!

This book follows Dylan and Parker reconnecting years after a breakup. When they both find themselves in NYC, they’re practically forced into working together on an upcoming book launch. Will they be able to avoid each other long enough to keep old sparks from flying?…
-Second chance
-Work place romance
-Close Proximity
-Duo POV

This book was SO cute!! I loved the NYC setting & the overall romcom kinda vibes it gave. I love a good workplace romance, something about it is so fun!
I found myself relating to the FMC, Dylan, so much! The anxiety representation in this book was so incredibly well done.
Our MMC, Parker, is down SO bad for our FMC it isn’t even funny😭 the YEARNING!!!!! His inner monologue towards her had me kicking my feet and giggling and the banter back & forth between them was so good.
I feel like sometimes second chance romances can be hard to do because you have to re-create the connection/chemistry between the two characters after a breakup. The author DELIVERED.
I loved the other relationships within this book as well. The friendships & girlhood were such a beautiful touch.

Thank you x10000 Riley for allowing me to read an ARC of your debut novel, I am HONORED.💗

First and foremost- Thank you Riley for the arc! The New York Charm was an adorable second chance, forced proximity, workplace romance. I thought it was adorable and so sweet. 3 stars!

Parker & Dylan are so sweet and sensitive and ugh adorable frankly! I have no notes on them!! But also…THE ELEVATOR SCENE? I was blushing like my kinnie was whispering me sweet nothings!

I so wish we had gotten more side characters stories tho…yes yes Scarlett and Blake but what about my baddie Amelia? I need to see/ hear/ and know more about them!

I LOVED a city setting! Being from the Midwest this gal dreams of New York- I loved what we did get, but I wish we got more of our MC’s existing in this space!

The New York Charm was so wonderful and lighthearted it felt like I was reading a marshmallow.💌❤️

This was my first second-chance romance book I’ve read and I had such a fun time! What a lovely plot with lovable characters and the NYC setting had me hooked! It was so “Devil Wears Prada” coded too, which was such a good time!

I admire indie authors immensely because they are running the show fully by themselves. Writing a book is hard. But having to be author, editor, publisher and marketer at the same time is such a huge feat. Sometimes it’s hard to tell that an author didn’t have a team of editors backing them up, and “The New York Charm” is a great example of that. Of course, there are a few things I’m sure a trad pub would tweak or enhance, but that’s the easy stuff! The bones of “The New York Charm” (a.k.a. the not-so-easy stuff) are amazing.

In most areas of the book, Riley maintains a show-don’t-tell writing style, which is extremely hard to do, and hard to do consistently. But it is such a better reading experience and was something that stood out to me immediately about her writing. Every few chapter I’d come across a line or a paragraph or even an entire section of dialogue that felt like Emily Henry had written it. That writing style resonates with me so much, so I mean that as the upmost compliment.🩷🩵

First and foremost, thank you Riley for an early copy of your debut novel. I’m extremely proud of you.

As everyone knows, I am not a romance girly. There are a few romance novels I do love but it’s rare. I’d like to say The New York Charm made the cut.

I absolutely loved this book. The story was beautiful and relatable from page one. I found myself not being able to put it down because I wanted to continue learning more about Dylan and Parker. I honestly felt I was reading something that happened to some of my friends.

Not only is this book extremely well written, but it has a beautiful message about second chances and how important they are. We also had AMAZING anxiety representation and I felt seen.

The New York Charm has the perfect rom-com vibes. This story makes you emotional, it makes you laugh, AND it has the perfect amount of spice.

I highly encourage everyone to read this as soon as it comes out on March 18th.

My two favorite quotes:
”There are going to be times when life pulls you apart from the person you love the most. But if you’re meant to be together, you’ll find your way back to one another.”

”Sometimes you just need a little space from one another to realize what you truly want. It might not be in your control, and in other instances, it’s not. Either way, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that life is bringing you back to give you a second chance. If you want it, that is.”

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I love a good second romance and this is everything I hope for in a second chance romance 🤭

As a fellow anxiety girly, Dylan will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you Riley for writing a character that I can relate to and feel seen.

Side Note: Are we getting a Blake and Scarlett book, next??? If so, I need it 😩

Thank you Riley Winters for the ARC in exchange for an honest review, you are amazing and congrats!

6⭐️ Dylan & Parker have my heart forever!!!

2000’s rom-com vibes featuring a second-chance at deep, yearning love, characters that are forced to overcome real life challenges, quotes that will make your heart sing and absolutely delicious spice 🌶️

Like can we take a moment for the elevator 🥵 IYKYK

Riley wove some type of magic into these pages because as soon as I picked this book up, I did NOT want to put it down

The setting was so nostalgic (as an East Coaster who went to NYC all throughout growing up) and the characters felt extremely real. Like people I genuinely want to be friends with!! I still think about them DAILY

This book had me both giggling and kicking my feet and crying buckets of tears and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Do yourself a favor and don’t skip this one 🍀

3.5/5 Stars (rounded up)

Thank you Riley for the opportunity to read this as an advanced reader and congratulations on your debut romance novel!

Parker and Dylan were in a serious relationship in college, and when distance got in the way, they went their separate journeys into adulthood. But did they ever really move on?

This is a very cute, realistic, modern day second chance love story. There were some heartfelt moments, and I appreciated the representation of anxiety. This had a dash of spice with was very good, I see you Riley! For a debut novel, this was written well. I do wish we had more built-up tension with these tropes and more in-depth character development and identity overall.

Tropes:
~ Second chance
~ Workplace romance
~ One bed
~ College lovers

Lots of cute moments. Some spice too. And found family with their friend group ever growing. Excited to see where Riley takes book 2!

2.5⭐️ the storyline was okay, the characters were okay, but honestly I skim read the last 50% and it was nearly my first DNF of the year. The dialogue felt very rigid, serious and script like. There was no banter or humour or chemistry.

If I could give this book 7 stars I would. It’s like Riley broke into my brain and created the perfect romance novel for me. Early 2000’s rom-coms walked so this book could RUNNNN.

From the kismet meeting on the plane, to the mutual pining, and the heartbreaking revelations in between… this was perfect.

Parker is an absolute wet dream. Literally and figuratively. He is EVERYTHING. He is a down bad, golden retriever MMC who is an absolute simp for his girl.

I love love loved Dylan’s journey and I am so impressed with the mental health rep, the positive AA experience and seeing her deal with her grief in many different ways.

There was a perfect mix of “flashback” memories that gave you a look into their relationship 5 years ago and it added so much emotional depth to their current state.

Zero notes. Perfection.

BRB moving to NYC immediately so I can steal Parker from Dylan 🤭🤭🤭

ARC REVIEW
4.5 ⭐️

I love me a good right person, wrong time! This was amazingly written. Parker and Dylan are so cute and I couldn’t help but root for them the whole time, especially Parker. I really loved the side characters too! The friendship group? Sex and the city vibes and I’ve never gotten that from any other friendship group I’ve read about. Blake and Scarlett? I need to know!!!!

On a serious note, I want to take a second to discuss the anxiety representation. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I thought the representation was spot on. Anxiety isn’t talked about or explored enough in books.

Congratulations Riley, thank you so much for the opportunity to read your book as an arc!

This is such a well done debut! I loved how romantic Parker was to Dylan in this book.

Not only does this not follow the same format as so many other romances (no third act break up / Thank God) - it has a slow burn second chance romance that’s actually believable.

So many of the traditionally published romances this summer have had the same copy paste feel, and this one is full of heart, and doesn’t fit the same “mold”.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, and can’t believe this is Riley’s first book!

Definitely worth picking up!

Can we talk about how this is a debut novel????? 5⭐️

I love all the characters, the girlhood, the realistic struggles, the romance. Dylan and Parker are everything and I love them so so much. This book is the comfort rom com I want on repeat. It makes me want to go to New York and get a martini with my girlfriend’s stat. I also love how the book includes some deeper themes that feed into the character growth and development. I love when a story is lighthearted and fun but can tackle heavier moments that make you feel something.

This book also has some of the most beautiful lines I’ve read. Highly recommend. MARCH 18TH RUN DON’T WALK!!

The New York Charm is a cute, light-hearted, low-stakes rom-com centered around Dylan and Parker; two exes working together in a crazy twist of events on the same book release!

After a devastating break up, Dylan never thought she’d have to see Parker again. Until fate intervenes and on her flight from her hometown to NYC for a new job, she ends up sitting next to her years estranged, long time ex. Who, unbeknownst to her, ends up being a partner she has to work with on a debut book release. But, this close proximity muddles clarity she’s gained over the years but are these revived feelings worth her job?

TNYC is a quick and easy palate cleanser that also touches very tastefully on alcohol abuse, heartbreak, anxiety, and poor family relationships.

Thank you so much Riley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review and I hope all your dreams come true in this series!

First off, thank you so much Riley for sending me this ARC! Congratulations on writing a whole freaking book!!!!!! AHH!!!

This is a second chance, workplace romance that follows the story of Dylan and Parker. After breaking up five years ago, they are forced to reconnect after they find themselves both living in NYC and having to work on a book release together. Being in such close proximity, it forces them both to come to terms with the love they have for each other that never fully went away. Neither wanting to get hurt again, they decide to be as professional as possible, but the more time spent together, the harder it is.

The vibes and the over all storyline were so cute! The pacing throughout was great as well!

I want to start this off by saying thank you to the lovely Riley Winters for the ARC copy! With that being said, this does not affect my review, and this will be completely honest.

The New York Charm is ultimate rom-com material. Like I was getting 13 going on 30 vibes the whole time and I was here for it.

Parker is our cinnamon roll MMC, and I adored him. He was so sweet the entire book and a man OBSESSED with his woman.

Dylan is our FMC, who is trying everything to protect her heart, she’s putting up walls and keeping her distance.

Overall I rated this book 3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoyed it. I would have liked to see the third act breakup be a little longer, which is crazy but I like the drama what can I say. This book was all the lovey dovey good time feels! And I am so proud of Riley for being able to start her journey as an author!

As a girl who moved halfway across the country from her family and sobs in the airport every time I leave my mom, this book had me hooked from (quite literally) the very first page. This is EVERYTHING I want in a romance. The characters and storyline were believable, and even better, they were all LIKABLE. The story moved at an amazing pace and it truly felt like watching a feel good movie. I just finished this and I miss these characters already. Thank you Riley for an amazing story❣️

[arc review]

i am a sucker for anything that’s set in new york because i like to point out all the places i recognize as a native new yorker so this book was right up my alley.

this book was cute but i didn’t really feel a connection to dylan or parker. dylan is an over thinker, which is fine, i am one too but i find it a little hard to believe that she didn’t change the way she thought about their relationship a little bit? i have no idea if that make ANY sense but i definitely feel like she did a little bit of healing away from parker but she’s still approaching their relationship the same way she did when they first dated.

i had higher hopes for this book but it’s just okay for me. i didn’t love it but i didn’t particularly hate it either. it’s just okay.
