The Summer of Starting Over is a sweet story of reconnecting and second chance at love. Singer Callie Jackson hasn't been home for nine years except for the funeral of her parents. Now she is home to pack up her family home, confront old hurts, pains, and regrets. Jesse Thomas hasn't gotten over the breakup with Callie and now he is working on Callie's home but he has secrets Callie's Uncle Lonnie won't let him tell Callie. Yet. This is an emotional story of healing, love, and finding one's self. The setting is a very lovely part of Florida with beaches, old trees with Spanish moss, and small town community atmosphere.
I can’t express how much I adored this book!!! I went into it pretty much blind and not expecting too much since my most recent arcs haven’t been earth shattering but I’ve officially found my first 5 star worthy arc! The chemistry and banter was so cute and even though I usually HATE second chance romances, this was just so well executed that I can’t help but love it.
This follows Callie and Jesse. They live in a small town in Florida (loved this even more because I currently live in Florida as well!) When Callie was 16, she was discovered to be a really good singer and got signed to a record label! To follow this long time dream of hers, she ended up having to move to Nashville. Because she knew her high school boyfriend Jesse had always hoped to stay in their home town, she broke up with him. She wanted him to live his dream while she would be able to live hers. Only it turns out that the singer life is not as fabulous as she initially thought. After a tragic accident in which both her parents pass away, she never felt the need to go back home. But when her house gets sold she has no choice but to face her past and get back to clear out her childhood home. Who other would she run into than her old lover Jesse Thomas.
Jesse was absolutely heartbroken when Callie dumped him in order to follow her dream. Not because she broke up with him but because she took away the choice for him to maybe follow her. So when Callie suddenly shows up he can’t help but feel resentment towards her. That is until he sees her wearing his old hat to disguise herself. How will he ever explain to her that he is the one who bought her house? As time progresses and Callie gets more comfortable around her own house, she realizes she’s found her love for singing again. She manages to write multiple songs in the short time she’s there but her manager does not agree with what she’s writing. In his opinion they helped her build an image with songs that are not country like her first album. (Very Taylor Swift coded yes!) Will Callie find the courage to stick up for herself and what she wants? And how will everything play out once Callie discovers the real reason that Jesse is constantly working on renovating her childhood home?
Spice: 0/5 Cuteness: 10/5
I adore this book with every piece of my heart. It’s a perfect summer read. It feels so much like watching an old school romcom movie! The way the whole book spins around getting to the big mind blowing kiss at the end made me so happy! And all the little side plots and sub romances and friendships are the cherry on top. I think this book is perfect for any romance lover. It’s like a clean Emily Henry book! It also reminded me a lot of “When in Rome” by Sarah Adams so if you liked that one, give this a try!
Tropes: ✨Small town romance ✨Second chance ✨Fmc celebrity x small town mmc ✨High school sweethearts ✨Fms refinds her old self ✨Found family ✨Beach read

The Summer of Starting Over swept me up from the get-go. I was immersed into the town of Big Dune Island. I always love side characters, and I feel like there were quite a few that I'd love to know more about. Knowing the real town that the fictional island represents, I felt the story was alive. I could picture all the places and events, even Callie's childhood home. I loved the idea that you CAN go home again. I can't wait for book two!
3.5⭐️ This is the perfect lighthearted beach read! It was very reminiscent of the Hannah Montana movie for me, so it was a little nostalgic bc of that. A super quick & cute read for me and great for the summertime!
Callie Jackson always wanted to be a star. Nashville bound, she left her family, friends and home in pursuit of her life long dreams. Jesse Thomas had plans to go on to Nashville ahead of Callie and he was going to attend Vanderbilt University. But the best made plans don’t always work out the way we want.
Callie’s time in the spotlight was short lived. And when Callie’s Uncle Lonnie forces her to return home to Big Dune Island, her world is about to change once again and in a major way.
The Summer of Starting Over, authored by Savannah Carlisle, is a wonderful story that literally launched me to the sandy beach. I loved everything about this story. Once I started this book I couldn’t stop until I got to the very last page. I loved Callie’s story and Jesse was perfect for her.

This book felt like coming home!! It’s a story about returning to a place you love and finding yourself again. The setting of the book takes place in a small coastal beach town and the characters are so loveable. Callie left home at sixteen to chase her dreams of being a famous singer in Nashville. She left her then boyfriend, Jesse, and family behind to go after her career. She is returning home because her childhood home is being put on the market and she needs to get things sorted. ARC Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Available April 1, 2025 Pages 308
Savannah Carlisle's The Summer of Starting Over is a heartfelt, beautifully written novel about love, loss, and the power of second chances. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Big Dune Island, a charming town with cobblestone streets and a tight-knit community, the story follows Callie as she returns home to clean out her childhood house after the loss of her parents.
Callie never planned to come back, but the past has a way of catching up with us when we least expect it. As she sorts through memories she's spent years avoiding, she's also forced to confront Jesse-the boy she once loved but left behind to chase her dreams. Now working on her family home, Jesse's presence stirs old emotions, making it impossible for Callie to ignore the pieces of herself she thought she had left behind. Meanwhile, Jesse grapples with his own feelings and a secret that could change everything.
One of the novel's greatest strengths is its characters. Each one feels real, like someone you might meet in a small-town cafe, swapping stories over coffee. Their friendships are warm and authentic, adding depth and heart to the story. Jesse, in particular, is an unforgettable character-his kindness, loyalty, and deep emotions make him impossible not to love. His relationship with Callie is filled with nostalgia, longing, and the possibility of rekindled love, making every interaction between them compelling and bittersweet. It was easy to fall for Jesse and there’s no doubt you will too!
Callie's journey of self-discovery is just as rewarding as the romance. Watching her take control of her life and career, all while processing her grief, is both inspiring and deeply emotional. The novel's lyrical writing-especially through the inclusion of song lyrics-creates a dreamlike atmosphere that lingers long after the final page.
The Summer of Starting Over is a story that stays with you, reminding us that sometimes, coming home is the only way to truly move forward. If you love small-town romances filled with heart, nostalgia, and second chances, this book is a must-read.
Thank you to Savannah Carlisle for the ARC of The Summer of Starting Over in exchange for an honest review.
Callie Jackson left her small island hometown to chase her dreams of being a superstar. Jesse had always planned to move to Nashville with Callie during his college years, but she made him stay away when his family’s business ran into an unexpected crisis. Now, Callie is back in town for the first time in years to clean out her family’s home which recently sold…and she’s shocked when she finds Jesse working on fixing it when she arrives. As she spends more time in her hometown, emotions from her past resurface and she starts to find the Callie she was before the fame.
This was a quick and cute read, with perfect small town beach vibes. The setting was described so well, complete with a tight knit community that was involved in everyone’s business. Although Callie’s dreams of becoming a famous singer came true, she’s dealt with a lot of struggles in life and I’m glad that she was finally able to come home and find herself. I did find myself more invested in the drama of her career than her romance.
The relationship between Callie and Jesse felt a little forced. It felt like they were both pining for the relationship they used to have, rather than actually reconnecting and spending time together to build a fresh romance. It made it hard to feel a connection between them, which was highlighted by their miscommunication issue being fixed by Jesse building a recording studio rather than actually having a conversation and talking. There were also a lot of side character romances that just felt a little unnecessary.
Callie returned to her hometown, Big Dune Island, Florida. At 16, she had her first record deal and a gold album. After much success, she came home to start over! Between her childhood home, saving Beach Bash and figuring out her own life, can Callie figure out what’s next? Will her music career survive?
A heartfelt, fun, and entertaining read! This book grabs your attention from the start and quickly becomes a page-turner! If you need a lighter read, then I highly recommend it! A perfect book to take to your next book club or to read on your next vacation!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Music, second chances, first love, beaches. Yup I like a lot!! I was waiting for this one and couldn’t wait any more. I had to sneak it in between a few other books I am reading. I listened to audible. The reader was fantastic! I listened on 1.5 speed. I will be reading this one again!
A heartwarming second-chance romance I enjoyed, filled with sunshine, nostalgia, and all the feels—an ideal read for your next beach day or summer escape! 🏖️💛
This is my first book by Savannah Carlisle. It is a sweet second chance story about the one who left and the one who stayed. Callie and Jesse were high school sweethearts destined for a life together until they weren't. Callie leaves to make a name for herself in the music industry and Jesse is left behind to help with a family crisis. Now Callie is forced to return home (10 years later) and to face what she left behind and who she's become.
Book Review: The Summer of Starting Over by Savannah Carlisle Thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.
The Summer of Starting Over is the kind of cozy romance that doesn’t just entertain—it settles into your chest and stays there. Savannah Carlisle has written a heartfelt, emotionally rich story about coming home, facing the past, and realizing that sometimes, the life we think we’ve outgrown is the only place that ever really felt like ours.
Callie Jackson had everything—fame, music, adoration. She left Big Dune Island at sixteen with a record deal and the whole world at her feet. But the music industry chewed her up and spit her out, and now, ten years later, she’s lost her creative spark, her confidence, and the people she loved most. The passing of her parents left her with one last tie to the island: the family home. When her Uncle Lonnie tells her it’s been sold and she needs to come back to clean it out, she has no choice but to return to the very place—and the very memories—she’s avoided for a decade. What she doesn’t expect is to see Jesse Thomas again, her high school sweetheart, the boy she loved so fiercely she broke his heart on purpose.
From the first few pages, I felt like I was right there with Callie—smelling the salty ocean air, hearing the seagulls, riding her bike down cobblestone streets, heart pounding as she rounds corners that might bring her face to face with the past. Carlisle’s setting work is vivid without ever being overwritten. Big Dune Island feels alive, like another character in the book. It has that comforting small-town charm—neighbors who meddle because they care, coffee shops where everyone knows your name, and secrets that hum just beneath the surface.
The relationship between Callie and Jesse is the heart of this story, but it’s far from simple. Jesse stayed behind to help his family through hard times while Callie chased her dreams. Their breakup wasn’t just painful—it was deliberate. Callie made it so Jesse would hate her because she thought it was the only way he’d stay. That decision haunts both of them, and it’s handled with surprising emotional nuance. This isn’t a quick-fix reunion—it’s a slow, cautious process of relearning each other and deciding if forgiveness is even possible.
Carlisle knows how to write characters with depth. Jesse is more than the “boy who stayed.” He’s kind, loyal, a bit guarded, but still clearly loves Callie underneath it all. His frustration is valid. His patience, earned. And Callie isn’t just some washed-up singer wallowing in regret. She’s hurting, yes—but she’s also trying. Trying to rebuild her career. Trying to reconnect with who she was before fame distorted her dreams. Trying to make peace with the version of herself she had to become in order to survive.
What really resonated with me was how the story portrayed personal growth and emotional healing. Callie doesn’t just need to rekindle a romance—she needs to forgive herself, mourn her parents properly, and decide what kind of artist she wants to be moving forward. One of my favorite lines comes when Jesse finally opens up to her: “You didn’t just walk away, Callie. You burned the whole damn bridge and told me to be grateful for the ashes.” That line captures the heartbreak of their past so perfectly—and the stakes of trying to start over.
The supporting characters add even more warmth to the story. Uncle Lonnie is a standout—wise, salty, and clearly orchestrating more than he lets on. Callie’s best friend Gigi is a firecracker, and I was thrilled to see she’s getting her own book next. Even side characters like cafe owners and nosy neighbors feel real, giving the story texture and community without stealing the spotlight.
Is this book predictable in some ways? Sure. It’s a small-town, second-chance romance—it follows the beats you’d expect. But it doesn’t feel cookie-cutter. It feels earned. Emotional. Grounded. There’s very little “fluff” here. The drama isn’t over the top. The tension comes from real-life regrets, difficult decisions, and the ache of “what if.” And yet, the tone stays hopeful. Cozy. Reassuring.
This book reminded me why I love this genre. It’s about finding your way back to the people who knew you before you became someone else. It’s about learning that you don’t have to stay broken. And sometimes, you don’t need to reinvent yourself—you just need to come home.
If you’re looking for a summer read with real heart, genuine emotional stakes, and characters who feel like old friends, The Summer of Starting Over delivers. It’s not flashy or dramatic—but it’s honest, tender, and deeply satisfying. The romance is sweet, the setting is transportive, and the emotional payoff is absolutely worth the slow burn.
From the very first page of The Summer of Starting Over, I was pulled into a world that felt like home, one I never wanted to leave. Savannah Carlisle’s writing has a rare ability to make you feel like you're not just reading a story, but living it. I read the book in a single sitting, unable to put it down, and as soon as Nashville was mentioned, I couldn’t help but press play on my country music playlist to set the mood. This book spoke to my heart in ways I wasn’t expecting. The themes of second chances, rediscovery, and finding the courage to face your past resonated deeply with me, and I found myself transported from the cold, grey skies of Scotland to the sun-drenched streets of Big Dune Island, right alongside Callie and Jesse.
The author’s vivid descriptions of Big Dune Island made me feel like I was walking the cobblestone streets, breathing in the salty ocean air, and hearing the gentle hum of the island’s rhythms. It felt so real, so alive, that I was right there with the characters, feeling everything they were feeling. I could almost taste the sunshine and the nostalgia that filled Callie’s return to her home, a place she hadn’t seen in years.
Savannah Carlisle’s prose weaves emotions so seamlessly that each page feels like it’s speaking directly to the heart. The way she handles grief, love, and the complexities of second chances is nothing short of magical. I found myself feeling deeply connected to Callie’s journey—not just because of her story, but because of how real her emotions were. Her struggle to face the past, the loss of her parents, and the love she had left behind mirrored the emotions we all experience when confronting what we’ve buried deep within ourselves.
What truly made this book special for me was how it captured the essence of finding your way back to yourself. Callie’s journey wasn’t just about rediscovering her love for music but about rediscovering her roots, her family, and the place that shaped her. For someone like me, whose heart has always belonged to country music, I could feel the weight of Callie’s love for her hometown and her roots. It made me reflect on my own life—how country music has always been the soundtrack to my experiences—and how coming home to where it all began can be a powerful form of healing.
The slow-burn romance between Callie and Jesse was pure magic. Their connection felt so natural, so undeniable, and yet tinged with the rawness of past wounds. I adored the way their love story unfolded—quietly, with so much tenderness, honesty, and unspoken understanding. Jesse, with his quiet strength and unwavering loyalty, became a character I couldn't help but fall in love with, and watching Callie face the ghosts of her past while rebuilding her future with him was a joy I won’t soon forget.
By the end of the story, I found myself wishing that Callie was real—so we could hear the beautiful song she writes in the book. The song, like the book itself, would be a masterpiece of healing, love, and new beginnings. The Summer of Starting Over left me with more than just a good story—it left me with a sense of warmth, of having experienced something deeply personal. It was as if I had not just read about Big Dune Island, but had lived it, breathed it, and found a part of myself within it. Savannah Carlisle’s gift for crafting characters that feel like family, for writing prose that moves you, and for creating a setting that becomes a character in itself, makes this book one I will hold close for a long time.
This isn’t just a book; it’s an experience, one that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a heartfelt journey filled with love, loss, and the beauty of starting over. I would give this 5 times 5 stars if I could!
I’d love to know: if you could create a playlist for The Summer of Starting Over, what songs would you include? A soundtrack for this story would be the perfect way to continue the journey!
Callie Jackson left home chasing stardom, leaving Jesse Thomas—and their future—behind. Now, with her career in ruins, she’s forced back to Big Dune Island, where facing Jesse means confronting the past and the dreams they lost.
This was my first book by Savannah Carlisle, and I was excited to dive in. A friend on Instagram absolutely loved her debut novel, and when I saw The Summer of Starting Over available as a “Read Now” title on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance to check it out.
After reading so many books set in the UK, I was looking forward to a change of scenery and a return to the charm of small-town America. The Southern coastal setting was one of my favorite aspects of the book—it had that warm, nostalgic feel that reminded me of Jenny Hale’s novels. The descriptions of Big Dune Island were vivid, and I could easily picture the laid-back island life, the close-knit community, and the lingering emotions between Callie and Jesse.
I really wanted to love this book, but unfortunately, it just didn’t fully connect with me. While I enjoy second-chance romances, I found the pacing to be too slow. Much of the story focused on Callie’s internal struggles, and I felt that there wasn’t enough time spent with her and Jesse together in meaningful, engaging moments. Their relationship was at the heart of the book, but I wanted to see more interactions that rekindled their chemistry rather than so much reflection on the past.
That said, Carlisle’s writing shows promise. The setting was beautifully crafted, and I can see why other ARC readers who enjoy slower, introspective romances might connect with this story more than I did. While The Summer of Starting Over wasn’t the perfect fit for me, I’m still open to giving this author another try in the future.
I kindly received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Harpreth Road Press.
The Summer of Starting Over is everything I want in a summer read: well-written, charming, and heartwarming—but it’s also so much more than a fluff romance. Savannah Carlisle has crafted a beautiful second-chance love story full of emotional depth, character growth, and a wonderfully immersive small-town setting that I didn’t want to leave.
From the very first page, the writing flows effortlessly. Carlisle has a way of weaving her words so that you’re instantly drawn into Callie and Jesse’s world. The dialogue is natural and snappy—every line feels real. There’s a warmth and wit to the narrative voice that makes you feel like you’re chatting with a close friend.
Callie is a former country singer turned pop star, hiding out and trying to rebuild her life in the last place she thought she’d return to—her hometown. Jesse is the high school sweetheart turned small-town contractor who never quite got over her. The chemistry between them is palpable, but what really makes their romance work is the history and longing that lingers between them. Their journey back to each other is full of vulnerability, slow-burn tension, and a few well-placed plot twists that had me glued to the page.
And while the romance is swoon-worthy, the supporting characters make this story sing. Austin and Gigi nearly steal the show at times, and the entire town feels alive with heart and humor. There are adorable Taylor Swift easter eggs throughout (which, as a fan, I loved), but they’re subtle enough not to distract if you’re not into it.
This book nails the balance between sweet and emotional. There’s a deeper plot about self-worth, healing, and choosing your own path, and it gives the story weight without ever dragging it down.
Perfect for fans of Emily Henry, or anyone looking to escape into a story of love, hope, and second chances. The Summer of Starting Over is the kind of romance that leaves you smiling long after you’ve finished.
Tropes you’ll find: Small town romance Second chance Celebrity FMC x small-town MMC High school sweethearts
This one is going straight on my summer favorites list.
After a nine-year absence, singer Callie Jackson returns home to settle her family's estate and confront the painful memories she's been running from. Meanwhile, Jesse Thomas, still reeling from their past breakup, is working on Callie's house, harboring secrets that Callie's Uncle Lonnie has sworn him to keep.
💭 This was my first book by this author, and it absolutely won’t be my last. From the very first chapter, I was completely drawn into the charm and warmth of Big Dune Island, a small beach town so vividly described that I could practically feel the ocean breeze and hear the waves crashing along the shore. The setting itself became a character — cozy, picturesque, and the perfect backdrop for a heartfelt second-chance romance.
I really connected with Callie and Jesse’s story. Their history, the way they navigate old wounds, and the slow rebuilding of trust felt deeply authentic and emotional. It’s not just a love story — it’s a journey of growth and rediscovery for both of them. Callie’s struggle to heal and figure out who she wants to be, combined with Jesse’s determination to make amends and prove his love, made their relationship feel layered and real. Their chemistry was undeniable, and watching them find their way back to each other was incredibly satisfying.
This novel beautifully blends themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, and the courage it takes to embrace second chances. It’s heartwarming and emotional in all the best ways, with plenty of tender moments that will tug at your heartstrings. If you’re looking for a story that will sweep you away, make you believe in love again, and leave you smiling by the last page, this is the perfect book to pack in your beach bag. It’s an ideal summer read — full of heart, hope, and the magic of starting over.

The Summer of Starting Over had my attention from chapter one. The story was so beautifully written and touched on first love, loss and second chances.

As the story unfolds secrets are exposed and Callie has to finally face the past she’s been running from all these years.
Savannah has written such a beautiful story with a picturesque seaside small town as the backdrop. The characters and their friendships were so authentic that these characters seemed like real people you could bump into. Being from a small town myself I loved how immersive it was to read about Big Dune Island. There were so many moments I felt like I could personally relate to which made reading the story even more enjoyable.
The relationship between Callie and Jesse felt heartbreakingly accurate to a first love. Their interactions were filled with nostalgia, unspoken regrets and the prospect of second chances.

📚 BookTok Review: The Summer of Starting Over by Savannah Carlisle
The Summer of Starting Over by Savannah Carlisle is a heartwarming second-chance romance set in the charming coastal town of Big Dune Island. The story follows Callie Jackson, a former country singer whose dreams of stardom have crumbled. Returning to her hometown to settle family affairs, she confronts her past and rekindles a connection with her childhood sweetheart, Jesse Thomas, who remained on the island to support his family.
What to Expect: -Second-Chance Romance: Callie and Jesse's journey from estrangement to rediscovering love is both tender and realistic, exploring themes of forgiveness and personal growth. -Small-Town Charm: Big Dune Island's close-knit community and picturesque setting provide a cozy backdrop that enhances the narrative's warmth. -Emotional Depth: The novel delves into the complexities of returning home, dealing with past decisions, and finding one's true path, resonating with readers seeking a meaningful story.
For fans of Denise Hunter and Debbie Macomber, this novel offers a delightful escape into a story of love, redemption, and the beauty of starting anew.

This is an excellent book to start my summer reading! It is a sweet second chance romance full of family, friendship, and rediscovering what you truly want. Set in a small beach town where the locals all know each other it is the ideal setting. Callie seems to be living the life of her dreams, a successful music career and all the glitter and glamor that comes with it. A visit to her hometown on a Florida island has her reexamining her life and choices. Jesse was the boy she left behind and he has never left Big Dune Island and had to make sacrifices to save his family business. He is finally working on a project that might lead to him attaining a dream but will Callie’s presence change his future? The characters are interesting and I quickly became invested in their story and wanted them to find a way to make all of their dreams come true. Gigi and Austin added depth and humor to the story and I want to know more about their stories. The chapters alternate between Callie and Jesse’s point of view so readers are able to see what each are thinking. A fun bonus is that readers can actually listen to the song that Callie writes in the story. I highly recommend this to readers that enjoy sweet second chance romances.
Thanks to the author and UpLit for a gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Savannah Carlisle delivers a beautifully heartfelt and uplifting story in The Summer of Starting Over, a novel about second chances, self-discovery, and the courage to embrace new beginnings. From the first page, I was swept up in the warmth of the setting and the emotional depth of the characters’ journeys.
The protagonist’s growth throughout the novel is one of its biggest strengths. Her struggles, setbacks, and triumphs feel authentic, making it easy to connect with her and root for her along the way. Carlisle’s writing is immersive and evocative, perfectly capturing the emotions of rediscovering oneself after life takes an unexpected turn.
The romance is tender and slow-burning, filled with just the right amount of tension and heartfelt moments. But what I loved most was that this book isn’t just about romance—it’s about healing, friendships, and the importance of letting go of the past to make room for a brighter future. The small-town setting adds an extra layer of charm, making it the perfect backdrop for a summer of fresh starts.
If you love stories about resilience, self-growth, and finding love when you least expect it, The Summer of Starting Over is a must-read. It’s emotional, inspiring, and leaves you with a sense of hope long after turning the last page.
