Few master divers survive to tell their stories. Here is one who did. "A true bang-up suspenseful adventure from beginning to end."Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times. "As suspenseful as an Eric Ambler espionage novel."APFS Weekly Feature. Account of entrapment under barge as tide goes out won Readers Digest First Person Award. Dramatized by BBC.
This is a well written and fascinating account of a Navy diver whose career began before WWII and lasted through the Korean War. Most interesting was the work he did associated with the atomic bomb tests on the Bikini Atoll (when safety measures regarding exposure to radiation were in their infancy)- and later with other atomic weapon testing. Mindblowing, no pun intended. Also of note are his recollections of defusing waterborne mines in Korea. Hair-raising stuff. I have one gripe with the people who packaged this book, and that's with the image on the cover: Dear Idiots: Your designer obviously stole a picture of an astronaut. and YOU CAN STILL READ "NASA" ON HIS SUIT. Honestly, the cover image (and unimaginative title) deterred me from purchasing this book for at least a couple of years because it looked cheesy. I'm glad I finally relented. This one is in much the same vein as "Descent into Darkness".
