A WAR IS RAGING, and Alvair’s tyrannical regime is more of a threat than ever. In an effort to gain the assistance of the powerful and elusive Council of the Triad, Alexa travels to the picturesque city of her troubled youth, Sierra Blanca. The fate of the free world is at stake, and her only hope is to find the most powerful Amulet in existence―the Amulet of Destiny―before her enemies do. The battle of the century is fast approaching, but before Alexa faces Dante she must reconcile with Caleb, as dark power consumes him and threatens to destroy their marriage.
In the epic final installment of The Lost Amulet Chronicles, Alexa is the last hope for a world consumed by greed. Accepting her destiny is difficult, and she alone can determine whether it is a blessing...or a curse.
Feel free to check out my books, the latest of which is AMULET OF DESTINY, the conclusion to my YA Fantasy Series, The Lost Amulet Chronicles. I also have two new series in the works, in the genres of YA Fantasy and YA Science Fiction/Dystopia (I may release the latter under a pen name; I'm not decided yet).
Great news - Amulet of Destiny eARCS are now available! If you're interested in receiving a free copy in exchange for an honest review, please message me at katielynnjohnson84@gmail.com and specify if you'd prefer Mobi, Epub, or PDF. :)
(( THIS REVIEW REFERENCES EVENTS FROM BOOKS ONE/TWO, BUT ONLY VAGUELY. ))
As an avid reader, I read a lot of books. But this year I am focusing on something new, and really it's about time: Finishing That Series. So when Katie Lynn Johnson announced that eARCs of book three, Amulet of Destiny, were available, I just had to get one.
Following the events of Amulet of Elusion and Amulet of Power, our heroes find themselves on the brink of war. The enemy is powerful, his following massive, and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. So our heroes are off to meet the rebels.
Amulet of Destiny is darker than the other two books. We get to see more of that fantastical world, and politics seems to play an even greater role as Alexa and Caleb no longer find themselves in the "leader spot." Instead they join the resistance and put themselves under their banner. Not that this is a bad thing, because when shit happens, neither is afraid to step up and take charge.
Events occur during this book that make the story more real. A certain major spoiler from the end of book two has some nasty consequences in this book. And while I understood the logistics of it, it makes complete sense that her mind immediately focuses on the prior event and it fills her with dread. Something about the thing bothered me. I don't think it was the author's presentation of the revelation or anything that I find a fault with, but rather thoughts of the subject matter that get me.
And from there things only worsen for our heroes. They are taken on a complete emotional roller coaster during this last installment. We have laughs and kisses, and tears and heartache. This isn't one of those books where it's all rainbows and unicorns for all, but rather it's a book about right and wrong, and trials and sacrifice. Life and death.
Caleb, except for those few chapters I threatened to slap him if he didn't remove his head from his posterior, was still my favorite character of the bunch. He was strong and loyal. He loves his wife more than anything and, though he wants to shelter her from Dante and co, he understood and respected the fact that she was able to defend herself. And I really love that. Too often you see the hero refusing to allow the heroine to step up and shine on her own.
Alexa was Alexa. She's the it girl, the one Dante covets, and the one with a destiny. And yet, she is just a girl who wants to love and be loved. You can't help but feel for her in this book. She's got some relationship drama, a powerful stalker, and a world to save. No pressure. And yet, she is always willing to do what needs to be done to help her cause.
I do hate to say it, but this book was long. It was divided up into several parts based on the major plot arcs. There was an arc in the beginning/middle that I wasn't the greatest fan of. It was necessary for overall story progression, I just wish it was a little more trimmed up because I wanted more action. The last half of the book really picked up though, and the pages flew.
Words To Live By
"Adventure would wait for them, and when they were ready, they would seek it out."
Overall
If you are looking for a cute, lesson know indie novel to pass the time, then The Lost Amulet Chronicles may be the series for you. Through the three books I was entertained and intrigued.
It is always sad when you come to the conclusion of a series or a trilogy. I think that you spend so much time in this world (especially when you read them back to back like I read the last two books of this trilogy) that you feel like you are losing a bit of yourself when you finally say goodbye to the characters and the places that have occupied so much of your time and mind. That is definitely the case with Amulet of Destiny.
Amulet of Destiny picks up pretty much where Amulet of Power leaves off with Alexa and Caleb going to join the resistance against Dante. One of the lovely things about this book is that we reconnect with so many of their friends from the first book, Amulet of Elusion who were missing in AoP. It feels a bit like a homecoming and it definitely has that feeling of everything starting to come together. But that happiness is shattered pretty early on. I think that where AoE was revealing and AoP was dark, AoD is loss.
This is the war here. Plan and simple. So much of the book is gearing up to the final battle. I think sometimes that’s where this breaks down a little for me. There are so many times throughout where Dante has so much power and seems to be making strides towards breaking Alexa and her allies either mentally or physically. But it always seems to turn at the last minute. Its almost as if the author wants us to get to the final battle but remembers that we are rushing towards it too quickly. Which makes many of the trials feel a little forced at times.
That is not to say that I do not like this chapter of the story, in fact I think that it is a wonderful blending of the first two. There are tons of revelations (which I will not spill since I don’t want to leave any spoilers) and the tone is definitely darker. Revelations plus dark here equals loss. Loss of life and there is definitely some of that - some that made my heartache and some that I felt didn’t need to happen. And more important a loss of innocence. All of the characters seem to see so much more of the horror here. Whether it is seeing the destruction of villages or watching a friend being tortured or losing another friend, all of them lose a little of that innocence that they seemed to have in the first two books.
I need to reread all three of these again. One right after the other. As it stands now I think that my favorite would be AoP with the other two tied for second. And I think that a big part of that again would be almost forced nature of many of the situations here. The back and forth of it all. If that wasn’t there I think that this would definitely have been my favorite. (This one more than any of the others had me saying now this is high fantasy.) That said I cannot wait to read more from this author, and who knows when I reread maybe some of the situations won’t seem as forced…
Amulet of Destiny is, by far, my favorite book of the Lost Amulet Chronicles. I love the last books of series more often than not, but what I fell in love with in Johnson's latest novel was the vast amount of passion.
When I say passion (yes, the italics are necessary), I don't mean solely romantic passion, although there is plenty of that. Emotion carries this story far beyond what I expected. The romance between Caleb and Alexa, finally together after a treacherous first year of marriage, caught my heart. I loved the strong bonds of friendship surrounding Alexa - her friends would willingly do anything for her, and vice versa. The hatred and evil stemming from the villain of the story permeated the novel. All of the moods, feelings, love, hate, fears in Amulet of Destiny created an irresistible story.
It is possible to read Amulet of Destiny without reading the first two books in the series, but Johnson's storyline and characters are so in-depth and connected to past events that it would take a while to catch up. I really recommend reading the first books of the series.
Johnson's writing created such a beautiful world. I felt myself transported from my dining room table to the gorgeous city of Sierra Blanca - this passage was one of my favorites in the entire novel. The depth of detail made the scene spring to life. Occasionally, the dialogue felt a little stilted, but overall, absolutely lovely.
If you haven't read Johnson's novels, or have been toying with the idea of it, please do. Quite simply, I want to live in her world, know her characters, and see what she does. The Lost Amulet Chronicles is one of my top fantasy reads from now on.
I would like to start out by saying I received this book free from the author, in exchange for a fair and honest review. I absolutely loved this book! It was an amazing end to an amazing series! I must say that I found myself scared for Alexa and Caleb's life and got really upset when I thought that their time was done. From book one I fell hard for the strong characters and Katie did not disappoint in this book. It was filled with action that was well described. I felt as though I were fighting alongside the characters! The book is about Alexa and Caleb's struggles to take control of the power Dante has obtained. He is an evil person who must be stopped, no matter the cost. Unfortunately you will find that this comes at a very high cost and some excellent characters you absolutely love will not make it. I suggest giving this series a shot, it was definitely worth it. Amazing author, amazing book!
This story was given in exchange for an honest review. I have to say I have read all three of the books in the Lost Amulet Chronicles and this one is the one I loved the best. This book has a lot of emotional ties and strong bonds amongst friends. There is also evil and hatred and action throughout this book. The characters in this book like all the others are very strong and can relate to them. In this book Alexa and Caleb have to work very hard to get and take control of the power Dante has acquired. Dante is someone who needs to be stopped at any cost. Unfortunately the cost can be very high. From the beginning of the book to the very last page you will not want to put the book down. It is an awesome series and has some amazing characters and great story lines. It is worth reading…. Katie has done it again!!! Can’t wait til the next her next book…
