Frozen Fate #4

Rise of Ink and Smoke

Rate this book
A spinoff of the Frozen Fate trilogy by Pam Godwin, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author.

Wolfson Strakh fought his way to freedom, and it still isn’t enough.
With ink-stained fingers and his fierce Alaskan family at his side, he should feel whole. Instead, the past clings like scars, leaving a loneliness that won’t release him.
Until Dove Rath blows it apart.
A runaway bride with a rifle, she’s the dangerous fairytale princess of his dreams. But she isn’t here to be saved. She’s here to end her stepbrother, Jag Rath.
Ruinously handsome and lethal behind a keyboard, Jag drags old darkness into Alaska, twisting protection into possession and loyalty into hunger. Curiosity sharpens. Desire flares. Boundaries blur. Secrets stir.
Jag’s past threatens the freedom Wolf bled for, the love he never expected, and the woman caught between them.
Now Wolf stands on another cliff, betting his life on love as everything ignites in a rise of ink and smoke.

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, cats, retired greyhounds, and an old, foul-mouthed parrot. She traveled the world for seven years, attended three universities, married the vocalist of her favorite rock band, and retired from her quantitative analyst career in 2014 to write full-time.

Her interests veer toward the unconventional: bourbon, full-body tattoos, and tragic villains. Equally peculiar are her aversions to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.

If those tropes don't get the blood pumping and anticipation levels skyrocketing... Nothing will...

This took me approximately 2 days to read, a runaway bride, a brilliant hacker, and I absolutely loved every minute of it, being back in this world, being back with these characters felt like coming home..

From the first moment I encountered Wolfson he became one of my favourites, unapologetically himself, a drag queen, a drama queen, all wrapped up in a flamboyant sexy man. His scars, his battle armour, his huge heart had me melting..

We had front row seats into all that made Wolfson tick, and what an emotional ride he put us through, his personality bled off the pages and straight into my heart, no other character has ever come close to replacing him, he became one of my utmost favorite characters and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book only to be in his orbit again.

I loved that he found happiness in his own part of the world, and the two that became his, were perfection. I highly recommend this series, it's beyond unique, it's gritty, it's dark, it's emotional, it's all consuming, it's addictive.. 37102430 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

Beta Read: Just know that even if Pam didn’t make a single edit after beta feedback, I’d still rate this book 5 stars. Full review to come after I read the final version, but I guarantee that my rating isn’t going to change. 🤭🐺🕊️🐆💅

I have no words …… 🖤

Just kidding, I have MANY words !!!!

I am going to start by saying that even though this book can technically be read as a standalone because it is easy enough to understand the story. IT WILL NOT HIT AS HARD AND IT WILL NOT BE AS EMOTIONAL AS IT IS IF YOU READ THE FROZEN FATES TRILOGY FIRST !!!!
I am a Pam Godwin Stan and I’ve read most of her books, even though I understand that she isn’t for everyone because of how dark and how taboo her books are, she is most definitely for me ! If you are not familiar with her style and her books, please proceed with caution. You wont see it coming…. She writes beautifully and you wont see it coming…. Her books are very DARK and mostly very TABOO, she doesn’t shy away from very heavy topics ON PAGE, so if you are uncomfortable with sexual assault, child predators, abuse, violence and very descriptive raw and painful scenes, she might not be for you. NOW that I hammered that in your brain let me talk about this book.

I met Wolf in the Frozen Fates Trilogy, he was immediately my “darling Wolf” he is the type of character that you just want to put him on your lap with a protective hug and a blanket around him. He is FERAL but he still carries so much innocence and humor to make you melt. He makes people uncomfortable, he dresses as a CRAZY Drag Queen, he makes his own style with woman clothes , man clothes and crazy makeup and hardware. People usually don’t know what to do with him….. he is confuse and confuses people! He is EXTREMELY CRAZY PROTECTIVE of people he loves. I crie MANY times in this book because like I said : “it hits you SO hard when you know his full story”
Dove appears in Wolf’s life in a blur of wedding dress, with a riffle on her hands, FURY in her eyes and steps, pain as a runaway bride that looks exactly like a dark princess which Wolf is utterly obsess with ! She is all PAIN, ANGER and DETERMINATION and Wolf immediately follows her…. (Read the book to know what happens ….)
Jag is the older stepbrother that I kinda hated all the way to a little over the middle of the book. He is a stalker but he is a guardian angel, a dark guardian angel that kills whoever is close to Dove or tries to do her harm, he is her protector but the biggest source of her pain. He is a jerk, annoying and I was so angry at him for his “methods “ with Dove. I HATED how he made her feel unimportant, unwanted and a burden…. Until we see his side of the story and ALL he goes through to raise, save, protect, love and care for her. Until we see the size of his love that can’t even be quantified nor measured. After that I loved him.
I hate when in a MMF book the girl feels like an afterthought and the the guys are more into each other, in that case make a MM book instead, there is a perfect balance and a thin line to make a perfect MMF and I thought by the first “tattoo encounter “ between Wolf and Jag, that I was going to be annoyed and that Pam Godwin was going to do me dirty. BUT ALAS SHE DID NOT ! The balance is PERFECT, she gave so much time between Wolf and Dove, they had so manyyyyyyyyy BEAUTIFUL heart stopping moments. They felt in love so completely, Wolf was sooooo obsessed with her from the day he first saw her and his pain when she was taken was heartbreaking 💔
I also love that despite the attraction between Wolf and Jag, they didn’t do anything before Dove’s approval because they both love her SO FIERCELY and SO INTENSELY that they refused to hurt her that way since that was already a sore spot for her to be, feeling unwanted and discarded was her biggest fear because that’s all she knew her entire life and Jag is a big culprit in this 😡
Dove and Jag much needed conversation and come to Jesus moment was so beautiful and hot and sad and beautiful again and hot again…. So NEEDED ! I love that Pam also gave them their own special time !
Now let me tell you that I SCREAMED when I heard the names MATIAS RESTREPO , CAMILLA, VAN QUISO and COLE HARTMAN ! I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK WHEN THE NAME FREEDOM FIGHTERS were thrown out there ! AND I LITERALLY HAD A MINOR FAINT when all of the Freedom Fighters appeared!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I died a little…. EVEN TIAGO BADELL was there ! That will mean nothing to you if you haven’t read the Deliver Series by Pam Godwin, but if you had you’ll have a minor orgasm, I swear !
Everything about this book was PERFECT!
LEO - KODY - MONTY and FRANKIE ! Their unwavering support and LOVE towards Wolf despite the teasing, the beautiful moments between Monty and Wolf, the tender moments between Leo and Wolf and the funny ones too because Leo is a menace. The dedication and quiet love between Kody and wolf and THE LOUD UNABASHED UNAPOLOGETIC love between Frankie and Wolf ! They all show up and show love, they all show support and show respect, they all show why they survive the horrors they did in HOSS ! 😭❤️😭❤️
This book was 750 pages for a reason and it was all in the details ON PAGE (I love that).

It feels impossible to review this book... I am always overwhelmed with feelings by Pam Godwin's works and this book is especially meaningful. It brings together so much from so many books I've loved before, not just the conclusion and HEA for Wolfson and his new lovers. It was truly a spectacle to behold yet it also felt intimate in all the ways I needed it to.

The last un-spoiler-y thing I will say is that if you are truly ready to be torn apart and put back together by a deeply satisfying HEA, PG is your woman. Maybe you will even make her your Queen like I have.

Okay, down to business.

This book was like the Avenger's Endgame of the Pam Godwin Book-imatic Universe. Move over SJM, the dark romance queen is here to break your heart, steal your soul, fuck your brains out, and make you cry on top of it.

I think that about sums it up..

For real though, I knew she was going to do some amazing things with Wolfson Strahk. I could see how much care and thought went into this character. To have us all still hanging on and hoping for him after 2 books of near silence, it had to be the most epic comeback of all time. I also had a hunch.... that he would need soothing from more than just a woman. I felt it in my BONES!

I have been ITCHING for PG to write another MMF storyline, and while I respected that because of the familial relations and trauma in Frozen Fate, Frankie's men won't ever fully cross swords, I still ached for it to happen is some aspects.

Hey, we're reading taboo dark romance here, don't judge me!

But Wolf was always a special boy to me. Even in HOSS, when there is a certain horrific scene... He still ached to be loved and touched and cared for. Even by his abuser to a certain extent. That was never going to be healthy nor wanted in the situation with Denver, but now that he is out and has the opportunity to explore all the flavors of the rainbow, I knew it was inevitable. He just loves to play with all kinds. Flirting, fighting, foreplay... it's all the same to him.

Enter Jag and Dove. They were a trickier couple of characters to warm up to, but I liked that the way they were written could have kind of been their own story. They have history and Wolf kinda falls right into it. And since he's from a fucked up past and a family that's a *little* too close themselves, he doesn't blink an eye at the fuckery. He just wants to both rescue a princess (Dove) and slay a demon (Jag), yet he also sees something complex in Jag that reminds him of his brothers, and that can't make him completely bad.

I think all that relationship stuff plays out beautifully, and I know I'm skipping ahead, but let's get to the juicy goodness. What both made this amazing and also makes part of this story maybe a bit underwhelming and not quite as thrilling if you aren't into all of the Pam Godwin lore. I mentioned that this was PG Avenger's. Well, it's better. It's Freedom Fighters meets The Frozen Fate.

And the second motherfucking Matias Restrepo entered the chat... well, I was fucking kicking my feet. Then we name dropped Cole, and Van, and Camilla... and I about died of happiness. So, here's the thing..... it kinda took the danger and stress out of the whole thing for me. hahaha!

But I fucking loved every second! Wolf 10000% belongs with that crew and fits perfectly. I wouldn't change a thing. I just won't ever lie to ya'll, especially about Pam Godwin. If you have read all her books, you will have the time of your life with this. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?

And fuck yes! This was still 6 stars! Wolf DESERVED to be a fucking hero and to get a Queen AND a Prince of darkness to fuck and be fucked by for all eternity. AND they will help rescue trafficked people with crazy Colombian crew. That's how it should be.

6 Stars
4 on the spice scale

CW: So many.. you really should check out Pam's site. If there is anything that triggers you, it's probably in here. Particularly Childhood SA, Step-sibling relations, harm to children, vivisection and more.

Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5

I genuinely don’t even know how to review this book, because nothing I say is going to come close to describing what a fantastic read this was. Like… there is no conceivable way I can put into words how beautiful this book is.
I’m deliriously happy. With Jag’s protective love. With Wolf’s feral devotion. With the life we built and keep choosing to live.
I kinda knew what I was getting into going into this, because the Frozen Fate trilogy is one of those series where nothing I’ve read since has ever really come close to the mental impact it had on me.

Pam Godwin writes in this brutally raw, deeply emotional way that just ingrains itself into your bones. You fear for these characters. You weep for them. You cheer for them. They become your entire world. And that is such a testament to how well she writes, because I feel like I know these characters as real people.

So when she announced that Wolf was getting his own story… I was already gone. It was hinted at in Frozen Fate, but actually getting his book, getting to see his story and his happily ever after after everything he’s been through…

It was just… perfection.

NOTE: If you haven’t read the Frozen Fate trilogy, stop here. Go read that series first. This book builds directly on those events and the trauma Wolf experienced, and so while this is a separate "story" it's not a STANDALONE in this world...

Also, I could talk about this book for hours… so I am going to REIN IN MY REVIEW A BIT… BUT if you wanna know more… like just ask, because there are so many things I loved that I am not including here…

And do notLET the length of the book scare you… all those pages are worth it! EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This book picks up a few months to about a year after the events of Frozen Fate. Frankie and her little harem are happy, she’s pregnant, and Wolf is… lost. He’s just going through the motions, not really sure where he fits anymore. Then one day Dove, a runaway bride storms into his life, blows straight past him, pulls a shotgun on a guy… and Wolf is instantly gone for her. He steps in, saves her from the situation, and quickly learns that the man she’s running from is her stepbrother… an excellent hacker Jag. From there, Wolf shelters her, and just like that… she’s it for him. But nothing is simple. Not with Dove. Not with Jag. Not with the past all of them carry. From that moment, everything just spirals into this intense, interconnected story between the three of them. Building on the repressed attraction Dove has for Jag, and the newly found attraction Wolf has for Jag...

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
Firstly, you should know this is not as Dark as the previous three books... But do not let it fool you as it still goes into some situations that can make a reader uncomfortable.

Dove was such a strong character for me. She’s been through so much, from losing her parents in a brutal way to being controlled and shaped by her stepbrother for most of her life, and yet she still has this incredibly free, feisty, almost light energy about her. She really does live up to her name. She’s a dove just trying to spread her wings, while Jag is constantly circling her like prey.

And then there’s Jag… oh my god. If you love morally grey men, this is the epitome of the type of man you dream of. He is dangerous, violent, completely unhinged at times, and absolutely lethal… but the devotion he has for Dove is on another level. This man has given his entire soul to her. She is it for him. He would burn the world down just to keep her safe. He crosses lines, yes, but that obsessive, all-consuming love? It’s impossible not to feel it and root for it.

And lastly... we have Wolf... my heart broke for him. I loved him in Frozen Fate, and seeing him here, still carrying all that trauma, still shaped by everything he’s been through, but slowly trying to figure out who he is outside of that pain… it was just beautiful. His sarcasm, his dark humour, and his eccentric “I don’t give a fuck” attitude all hide something so much deeper, and watching him come into himself, especially with his identity and his place within this dynamic, was done so well.

And the romance… this isn’t just a romance, it’s a testament to the deep levels of their relationship between all three of them. It doesn't just revolve around one person. They each love each other individually, and together they are stronger. I loved that this wasn’t just focused on one connection, but that the bond between all three of them mattered. Wolf and Jag start with this tension and violence between them, but that slowly shifts into something built on understanding, intrigue, and their shared love for Dove. It just works. The connection between Dove and Wolf can be fast, but sometimes Characters JUST KNOW.... THIS IS IT...

This book is tense, emotional, anxiety-inducing at times, but also so incredibly sweet in the way these characters care for each other. Yes, as I said the romance is fast and intense, but there are layers to it as they unpack their trauma, their feelings, and what this dynamic between the three of them means in a world filled with violence and danger.

Welcome to my obsession over the last week, ladies and gentlemen. This book had me in the absolute chokehold of all chokeholds!

I was obsessed with Pam's Frozen Fate trilogy to no end, and was convinced nothing could ever top it. And as much as | ADORED Wolf Strakh's character, I was soooo afraid that no story would ever do his beautiful character justice.

Um, BOY WAS I MISTAKEN!!

This is a gritty dark romance. MMF. With step siblings. And everyone has very dark pasts. It's taboo and forbidden AF and I was here for every word of it!

Truly..l've never seen characters that were more perfect for each other.

Their stories were raw, heartbreaking in parts, and unforgettable. For this being an almost 800 page book, I was glued to the page the entire time and could not freaking get enough.

Jag is a hacker and vigilante who stops at nothing to protect his step sister. And Dove is the runaway bride, mechanic who works on roller skates and comes crashing into Wolf's life... with a rifle.

The delicate care that this author took with all these characters and the story is so apparent. This was not dark and gratuitous for the sake of being dark and shocking.

And the cameo appearances, yall?!

If you're a fan of Pam Godwin, this book is unmissable!!

INFINITE STARS FOR WOLFSON⭐✨💫
He is one of the best-written characters I’ve ever come across. His humor, his choice of words (I honestly couldn’t stop highlighting quotes), his pain, and the depth of his emotions 🖤 make him absolutely unique. He feels incredibly real — raw and complex. From the sweetest pup to a wild, ruthless creature in the blink of an eye, and then back again.

🖤 ❝ For all his darkness, he’s the most colorful person I’ve ever met. ❞
🖤 ❝ He’s so fucking beautiful but in every way that feels wrong. Like a broken angel with nowhere left to fall.❞
🖤 ❝ A ghost with a heartbeat. A drifter hardened by life and wearing his ruin like an art form.❞
🖤 ❝ Wolfson isn’t just dangerous. He’s fucking mesmerizing. Ethereal beauty with a predator underneath.❞
🖤 ❝ He’s not sane. Not even close. He’s madness dressed in eyeliner and flower-printed rain boots. Unmedicated, unbothered, and somehow still functioning. But put a needle in his hand, and the tragedy becomes alchemy.❞

I’ve never read such beautiful descriptions of a character 💖. You stole my heart with this, Pam 🫂.

And I absolutely loved Jag 🐾. The pup and the kitten — there is so much warmth, passion and understanding there. I loved them deeply. Dove’s character was also beautifully written — I couldn’t imagine a better woman for Wolf.

But there was something truly special between Wolf and Jag — the way they match each other in passion, wildness, pain, and deep care. That part of the story felt like a masterpiece ✨🎨.

This book kept me on my toes from the very first page 📖🔥. I knew it would be a top read from the start. The tension, the atmosphere, and the underlying emotional weight of the story pull you in and don’t let go. Pam’s writing style is definitely it for me — so poetic even when it hurts 🖋️🥀, wrapping everything in an atmosphere that lingers long after you close the book.

The quiet moments, the pain, the loyalty, the humanity behind everything — this is a story that truly stays with you.
🖤 ❝ In the rise of ink and smoke, something inside me unclenches (...) I woke up and wanted the day.❞

I’m going to start by saying that is you have not read the original Frozen Fate series, don’t read this review. This is a spinoff, but it’s essentially book four and will have spoilers for the other books. You have to read the trilogy first.

This story is 1000% believable because Wolfson is the type that everyone would fall in love with. Beautiful, smart mouthed, funny, broken and vulnerable and not afraid to show it all. What a fantastic character. It’s not hard to see why he would be the one to fall into a situation between enemy step siblings and come out with the loves of his life.

“Whatever else we are to each other now, we are aligned here. In him. In loving Wolf without apology or rivalry. In wanting his joy more than our own certainty.”
“Yeah.” My throat closes. I couldn’t have said it better myself. “So… You love him.”
“I never had a choice.”
“Me, neither. He’s impossible not to love.”

I’m so happy this story exists. In the original trilogy I was so upset that Wolf was excluded from the poly relationship, but for family reasons it makes sense but more importantly, I now love the platonic relationship that Frankie and Wolf have. They have seen the worst happen to each other and are bonded in a way I don’t think the others could ever understand. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful. The whole story is, but it’s such a journey. I loved all of these characters and really felt the emotions here. I will be thinking of this book for a long time to come I think.

Now I have to read some of Pam Godwins other series that appear to be tied in to the end of this book. Sounds like they are wild too!

Contemporary MMF
Romantic Suspense
Age Gap (40M/32F/24M)
Obsessive Step Brother
Very Protective MMCs

There are not enough stars in the galaxy. 5 stars just doesn't do it justice.

Where do I even start? The Rise of Ink and Smoke... I’m honestly speechless. I truly don’t know where to begin with this one. Frozen Fate was already one of my favorite why-choose series, but this book… this add-on… easily pushed it into my top five favorite series of all time. And as someone who reads a ton of books, that really means something.

Moving forward with this review, please understand there will be spoilers for Frozen Fate. I don’t know how to talk about this book without spoiling it, so if you haven’t read it yet, please don’t go any further.

LISTEN... I loved, and I mean loved, Wolf. When he went over that cliff, I was heartbroken. Finding out he survived felt like a gift, but at the same time, he felt like an outsider looking in at the relationship that formed in his absence. By the end of Frozen Fate, I was so sad for him. So when Pam decided to write a book for him, I was ecstatic.

What a masterpiece. I can’t scream that enough. Wolfson Strakh owns a piece of my soul. I tend to gravitate toward the funny, golden-retriever type, and while that’s absolutely part of who he is, he’s also a ferocious beast, and I was here for it. We get to see what happens to Wolf while he’s missing, paired with everything Denver did. This man is trauma incarnate, but in true Wolf fashion, he’s still out here living his best life and cracking jokes. My darling Wolf. My crazy drag queen. I love this man so much.

Then Dove and Jag enter the chat. We’ve got a world-renowned hacker and his auto-mechanic stepsister, whom he is deeply obsessed with. I mean, to the point where, throughout her life, men have ended up dead for touching her. There’s a very taboo/forbidden vibe here, and when the three of them get tangled together, I was completely locked in.

Each of these characters is so fleshed out and interesting in their own way. And the communication in this book is so refreshing. Dove and Wolf, laying everything bare with each other, felt like a breath of fresh air. When so many books rely on miscommunication as a trope, it’s incredible to see characters actually open up and say what they feel.

This book is nonstop! Go, go, go. I couldn’t put it down. Pam does such an amazing job keeping the story flowing; I never wanted to stop reading. I fell hard for all three of these characters, and they truly fit together like missing puzzle pieces. But Wolf… that man owns my heart. I wanted to protect him at all costs.

I cried when I read the last page. I could read book after book about these three—truly. Give me an entire series of them fighting the good fight. I am officially in a book hangover and will be patiently waiting for the audiobook release in June or July so I can relive this journey. It was everything I hoped it would be, and more.

Pam Godwin’s uniquely melodic storytelling prose will have you laughing, crying & gasping all while your trope comfort levels bend until they break. She shatters traditional story guidelines, coming up with something deliciously dark and making it impossible to put down. These characters live rent-free in my head, and I’m deeply invested in every aspect of their lives. 700+ pages flew by in the blink of an eye because I simply could not put it down. Who needs sleep anyways?!

If you think your heart can handle the return to Sitka, think again. Rise of Ink and Smoke is a raw, cinematic masterpiece that feels less like reading a book and more like coming home. It's a gritty, beautiful, MMF dark fairytale. After the shattering events of the Frozen Fate trilogy, we finally get the story Wolfson Strakh deserves. Wolf is everything: unapologetically himself, a flamboyant drama queen, and a sarcastic soul whose humor is a shield for a heart that has been through hell and back. Watching this resilient man navigate his trauma, his firsts, and his worthiness of love was an all-consuming experience that left my emotions bleeding right off the pages.

But Wolf does not walk this path alone. Enter Dove, the runaway bride mechanic on roller skates who is as fierce as she is vulnerable, and Jag, the brilliant hacker and protective guardian who carries the world on his shoulders. The chemistry between this trio is absolute perfection. No labels, no judgment, just an unbreakable bond forged in the darkest corners of their pasts. Pam Godwin has outdone herself with a story that is as spicy as it is soul-aching, proving once again why this series is god-tier. I am gutted to leave the Strakhs behind, but I am walking away with my heart full, my spirit inspired, and another story that will live rent-free in my head.

Favorite Quotes:

"He's so f&cking beautiful but in every way that feels wrong. Like a broken angel with nowhere left to fall."

"Fairy tales aren't real. Not for people like me. But here you are. You're real."

"He kisses like a storm breaking loose. Like I'm his. Like he's never tasted a real meal. Until me."

We met Wolfson in Hills of Shivers and Shadows trilogy and back then he was a chracter that was hard to miss. He was a unique type of character. Dramatic, empathetic and troubled.
When this book was announced, my little heart couldn't believe it and I was just so anxious to read about what made him thick.
And Pam more than delivered it.
This book tells the story of a tragic character and a runaway bride.
Wolf finds Dove, a runways bride in her white wedding dress in the middle of the street with eyes full of fury and looking for blood. Dove was out for blood and nothing would stray her from her path. And Wolf saw in her what was missing in his life. His own cinderella and he was not about to let her go even if she came with baggage.
The thing I loved about this book was how thick it was and how nothing was rushed. We follow the journey of healling and acceptance of not only Wolf but Dove as well.
It was everything I expected it to be. Wolf remained true to his character, his mind was a chaotic and a beautiful place at the same time.
I did not expect the turns this story took and if you ask me if that bothered me, the answer would be a resounding NO.
I am glad Pam also stayed true to herself and gave us a memorable story of broken characters that only needed to find the broken pieces to mend their selves.
This was a beautiful story of tragedy and healling, it gave us the closure a lot of us needed after Heart of Frost and Scars. I had no idea I needed Wolf to get his HEA this much and will be forever thankful to Pam for not letting us hanging.
I will keep my review vague because I believe the twists have to be a surprise and a delving into the tropes might spoil those that can read between the lines.
Thank you Pam for this story and for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this gem. I was sure it would take me a week to read it but... I finished it in one day. It's all about choosing your priorities.

3/5 stars: Rise of Ink and Smoke by Pam Godwin was a mixed read for me.

I went in really excited for this spinoff, especially after rereading the Frozen Fate trilogy to prepare. I was hoping for a more Wolf centered story, so I did find myself a little thrown when the focus shifted more toward Dove and Jag after the first portion of the book.

I also found myself wishing for a bit more emotional buildup in the relationships. Given the depth of trauma these characters carry, I expected more tension and yearning. Instead, some of the romantic development felt a little too quick, and certain heavier moments seemed to be brushed past rather than fully explored. With how layered these characters are, I think a more drawn out progression, maybe even splitting the story into two books, would have allowed both the relationships and the larger plot to develop more.

That said, I still really enjoy Pam Godwin’s writing style and the world she’s created here. Even though this one didn’t fully land for me, I’m still invested in these characters and would absolutely pick up another book in this world in the future. Thank you to Pam for an e-arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book. This story. Goodness, Pam. Rise of Ink and Smoke checked every box for me.

Coming out of Frozen Fate, I didn’t really know all that much about Wolf. Even then, I could see someone fighting his demons—fiercely protective of his family and unsure of his place in the world. This story showed me just how truly incredible Wolf’s character is. He’s someone who had to pick himself up off the floor during his darkest days and simply go through the motions, pretending he had it all together.

Then he meets Dove… and everything changes.

Wolf is deeply misunderstood, using humor and sarcasm to protect emotions he doesn’t quite understand himself. But when that layer begins to fall away, and he allows his honest, authentic self to emerge, it’s breathtaking. He’s also a sarcastic little shit—and I absolutely loved it.

Dove is one of my favorite characters Pam has written. Someone constantly on the run, giving pieces of herself to those who least deserve it while silently suffering for wanting love from someone she can’t—or shouldn’t—want. Watching her finally stop running, confront her past, and decide what kind of future she wants—and with whom—was such a beautiful journey, even when it meant ripping off the bandage covering her deepest wounds.

And Jag… oh Jag. Protector. Friend. Stepbrother. Guardian. Stalker.

He carried so much on his shoulders, and watching his story unfold was heartbreaking in so many ways. What does someone do when they’re trying to protect the people they love from the very thing that keeps hurting them—when that thing might actually be themselves?

Together, these three form a bond that only people who have endured the hardest parts of life could truly understand. No labels. No judgment. No forced choices. No looking back.

Just love, friendship, space, authenticity—and a future they choose together.

Pam’s writing here is deeply emotional, cinematic, and addictive. I found myself so happy to be back in Sitka, Alaska, with the Strakhs, fully immersed in a series that has become one of my absolute favorites.

And I’ll be very sad to leave them behind.

This book!!! I loved it! I know I needed Wolf to have his story, and this… was amazing! His first glimpse of Dove was epic. I loved how protective Jag is over Dove, but when Jag saw Wolf, he was stunned. Their first meeting was everything! You go read it… it went in slow motion for me. Monty’s worry over Wolf. They all worried, but to see how much Monty had changed. How they had settled into a family. It was great being back in Alaska. I LOVED It!

Genre: Dark Romance
Type: Book 4 of Frozen Fate
POV: First person - multiple
Rating:
4.75 Stars

Wolfson Strakh spent his entire life surrounded by unspeakable horrors in the remote Alaskan wilderness. Now living safely within civilization, he tried to move forward, yet an essential part of his heart felt missing. When Dove Rath barreled into his life, he thought he finally found the missing piece. But she had her own baggage with her stepbrother, Jag Rath, and the complicated bond was not something any of them expected to confront.

Wolf was endearing in his own irreverent way. Jag and Dove suffered their own tragedies, which formed an unbreakable bond. I liked how they took their time to adapt to the new dynamics.

“I’m cracked all to hell, Birdie. Mangled beyond repair in most places and missing some pieces. What’s left is taped together and unraveling in ways that make people flinch and stay away.”

Although the book is quite long, the storyline remained engaging throughout. I was especially excited by the direction the author took and the external connections made in the plot.

Rise of Ink and Smoke is a story of resilience and reclaiming one’s life. It would appeal to readers who enjoy dark romance with unconventional characters.

Finally! Wolf gets his happy ending; a story. When I say we've been WAITING for this update since the Frozen Fate trilogy wrapped last year...

Wolfson Strakh has been through hell—literally.

He grew up in the Arctic Circle, tortured and tormented by a demon in human form. Alongside his brothers, he grew warped under conditions that very few people could survive.

But survive he did. Until he didn't, and he plunged into the icy waters below.

His story didn't end then. He then spent time with another twisted demon, enduring more pain and making an unthinkable devil's bargain to survive once more.

So when Wolf finally sees the sun, he deserves his happy ending. Rise of Ink and Smoke is that happy ending.

That happy ending comes from an unexpected—yet very Wolf—place. A runaway, blue-haired bride, running with dirty skirts and shotgun through the Sitka, Alaska, streets in pursuit of her stepbrother.

It's something out of a twisted fairytale. (And Wolf loves those most of all.)

Dove and Jag are stepsiblings who have also survived against all expectations—even each other. And now that they've entered Wolf's orbit, the trio have a journey ahead of them...

Y'all. Rise of Ink and Smoke was a trip in the best possible way. Sweeter than I expected it to be—yes, "sweet" is NEVER a word I thought I'd associate with the Frozen Fate universe, but here we are—and healing in a way we all needed it to be.

Wolf's journey toward healing was non-traditional. How could it be anything but? His problems and past were so singular that I was concerned about this novel and how any romance for Wolf would adequately treat him with care, healing, and also retain that Pam Godwin-level of angsty drama and pain that we've come to expect.

This nailed it, folks. It handled Wolf's romance arc perfectly.

Dove and Jag's addition to the Strakh family knot was perfect. Dove was fiery yet soft, able to provide space for Wolf's journey while also enduring one of her own. Jag's hardened, bloodthirsty form of protection-as-love was very much in line with the Strakh men of the previous trilogy, but this time done in a computer hacker font that was very fun to read.

If I had to pick a negative—which I don't, but sometimes it's worth pointing to the bits we didn't love the most—I would have to admit that this story was almost too soft and too quickly fixed for the Frozen Fate universe. Maybe I'm the problem there, honestly, because while this story healed a lot of pieces for the characters it did make me feel like we we closing up the wounds too quickly for all three of our tortured leads. I eventually just let it go out of sheer happiness that they were finding their happy, but after the long-drawn, realistically paced arc of Frankie's story I thought this was one quite fast. (As fast as 700+ pages can feel, anyway!)

Definitely pick this one up ASAP if you're read the Frozen Fate trilogy. It's the perfect ending to our characters, and witnessing Frankie & Co's happy ending in practice was also perfection.

Thank you to the author for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Perfection. Pam is brilliant. She never fails to blow me away. I already know this will be one of my top reads of the year.

♾️⭐️

This is a SPOILER FREE ARC Review. 💙

I mean it when I say it feels like a privilege to be able to read anything Pam writes and Rise of Ink and Smoke was no different. This is now my 18th book I have read by Pam, and she just blows me away every time. I can see the growth in her writing and the absolute passion and thought she put into this story.

Without spoiling anything, it is safe to say I had really high expectations for Rise of Ink and Smoke given who it is about and the fact that it is a spin-off of the Frozen Fate Trilogy, which was fantastic in and of itself. Pam took every expectation I had and times it by a 100. I could not have imagined or asked for a better story for these characters. And I loved the role the Frozen Fate characters played as well as the other cameos that I will not go into further detail on because you just have to read it to find out.

This story. It's hard to even put into words how beautiful it was especially without spoiling it. Everything was timed perfectly and Pam hit all the marks. I would not change a single thing about this book. Everything happened how and when it needed to. Every single moment was intentional and it's one of the many things I really appreciate about Pam's writing. I really appreciated the time and detail Pam put into exploring these MCs. Every flashback and moment they experienced had a purpose and it really allowed me to understand the person that they are.

It got dark, fast. And when it did, it did not let up. This story is so much more than just a romance. It was about self-discovery, working through your trauma, exploring your sexuality and learning to embrace who you are and not care about what anyone else thinks. There were so many moments I had tears in my eyes not simply because it was sad, but because the EMOTION was so intense and the journey these characters were going on together and individually sat heavy in my chest and heart. I felt their pain, their struggles, their love like it was my own. Don't get me wrong, there are some lighthearted moments scattered throughout the story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I finished this book feeling healed and so proud of every single character in this book. The romance was the purest kind and deeply rooted in unconditional love and the upmost respect and patience for one another. I truly cannot rave enough about how good this was and the way Pam approaches these topics with so much grace and thoughtfulness. The found family was so strong in this, and lord knows these MCs deserved that. I am so happy they got it.

I will always swear by the statement that Pam is truly in a league of her own. Her writing is so unique, and I think with each book it just gets stronger and stronger. While I am so sad this story is over... I cannot wait to see what is in the future for such an incredibly talented author. Whatever she writes, I know she will pour her entire heart into.

Thank you Pam for the ARC. 🫶

This is a 6 star masterpiece!
I am so lucky and grateful to have gotten this book as an ARC from Pam Godwin.

Before I even got the book, I knew it was going to be incredible, not just because Pams writing can do no wrong, but because the Frozen Fate Trilogy was one of my god tier series.
NOTE: Read this trilogy before reading this book.

This book is about Wolfson, the youngest brother that was in HOSS, and who we tragically thought had passed away.
At the end of the last book, he reappears and we all breathed a sigh of relief, because this man is something special.

Wolfson (24) has been through multiple traumatic events, and now he is free and safe, living with his family in Alaska.

One day on his way to work he sees Dove a 30+ something yo woman running down the street in her wedding dress, headed for the tattoo parlour he works in. From there he meets Jag, who is Dove's stepbrother(40), and their lives take a turn.

This story is so beautifully written. It was long and let me tell you I was sad when it ended. I wish it could have kept going.

Wolf who is a virgin, goes through all the emotions when he starts the different relationships with Dove and Jag. He works through his sexual trauma, his guilt, his self-worth, and of course how to regulate and control his emotions. All of his firsts in this book were so beautiful to witness, the compassion, understanding and pure love from Jag and Dove when traversing these monumental moments were incredible, and they really impacted my poor heart.

Wolfson will always have a special place in my heart. The sh!t he went through, not just once but his whole 24yrs was just shocking. Wolf, our strong boy, was always so loving, and went above and beyond for the people he loved. He never put himself first, because he didn't think he was worthy of the love. He was eccentric, different, sweet, and a little mentally unstable (who wouldn't be after what he went through).

I don't want to say anymore because I don't want to ruin it, just know you will not regret reading this, and to Pam, you're amazing! Thank you for doing our boy a solid with this one. Couldn't have picked two better people for him!

Wolfson Strakh endured trauma, and though his scars are reminders of his past, they also tell his unique story. A man of many layers, Wolf is complex and fierce, especially when it comes to Dove and Jag Rath. Together, they must dive deep in murky waters in order to rise to the top.

“I still have scars. I always will. But they don’t run the show anymore.”

From the outset, being reunited with Wolf was worth the wait, as his character made such an impact on me in the Frozen Fate series. Narrated in multiple POV, Wolf is consistent with his shining personality but he also grows showing his strength in unexpected ways. With the introduction of Dove and Jag, they bring their own vulnerabilities and putting their broken parts back together with Wolf defines who they become. The storytelling feels effortless and well-paced which elevates the bond between this trio. Plus, the inclusion of certain secondary characters enriches the overall plot and character building.

“Together, they’re my center of mass, the balance point of my existence.”

In this novel, intrigue, tension and romance take these characters on an incredibly engaging and multidimensional journey in this author’s deftly crafted penned world .

“You meet a lot of Disney princesses?”
“No. I’ve waited my whole life for you.”

Oh my god. I could not of asked for a better book for Wolf. This was raw, emotional, dark, inspiring, and spicy as hell.

We get a deeper look into Wolf’s trauma and it hurts. My sweet boy deserves all the love—and the love he found in Dove & Jag was perfection. Even though Wolf has past trauma/ptsd, his character is so refreshing. He never shied away going to therapy. Never shied away from being his authentic self. He may use sarcasm & jokes as a form of armor, but I can’t help it—some of the shit that came out of his mouth had me HOWLING & my husband looking at me sideways. His character growth? Immaculate—also can he be my personal stylist? My Adam Sandler attire needs a refresh.

Dove. Sweet, badass, sexy as hell, Dove. Idk dude, Pam never fails when writing a kickass FMC. Elbows deep in grease, working on old cars while skating around the shop in her roller skates. I gotta take some notes from her.

Jag. Istg majority of his chapters were blurry. Everything he did for Dove had me a simpering mess.

It was also so nice being back with the Strakh’s—my girl Frankie will always hold a special place in my heart.

When I read the original trilogy. Wolf was always a character that’s stuck so much in my mind. I am so happy that this book happened. If you haven’t read the original trilogy and you’re reading this now you definitely need to but be warmed. This whole entire series is dark. It’s messed up. It takes you on a journey. You relive some of that journey through the eyes of Wolf and what happened after he went over the cliff. If anything wolfe is never gonna apologize about being exactly who he is and that something I love about his character. He loves, throwing people off with his style and unsettling them even. He uses it as a weapon, but also to protect himself.
And I love how when he first sees Dove he’s just captivated by her. And her story and Jags. Everything just came together so well and Pam is just an evil genius. The first three original books our books that I think about very very often. And now with this one added to it, just altogether, my all-time favorite dark romance series, probably ever. I’m not ready to leave these characters. And I will be coming back to reread the whole entire series again very soon and very frequently!

♥️Stay…mine…here♥️
For those familiar with Pam’s “world,” you’re in for some surprise encounters😏🤩
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A journey through time in the kingdom of Hoss, told in the style of Wolfie Boy… Dramatic, funny, sarcastic, yet moving and sensitive—about pain and trauma that seem… inescapable, about overcoming hell and yet not feeling alive even after you’ve won… until a runaway bride and a vigilante slip into the wolf’s life… and everything changes
I love this life. The purpose. The rebellion.
My life has meaning now.
I’ve come full circle, a long journey. From victim to vigilante. From prey to hunter. From the abandoned to the sought-after. From alone to one of us. From nothing to this. ♥️💥

ARC review:

5⭐️♾️: Pam DID 👏🏻 NOT 👏🏻 PLAY 👏🏻!!! 🤯🤯🤯😱😱😱. This was an absolute masterclass! I was in a chokehold from chapter one and completely forgot that I was reading. I fell in love with Wolf from book one of the Frozen Fate series and to finally get the rest of his story was EVERYTHING!!! 😍😍😍 Wolf is so eccentric and witty with his ill-timed inappropriate jokes. He’s so broken from his trauma while also being a possessive MMC with those “touch her and ☠️” vibes. His character was in such a dark place and literally found the light by the end. Wolf experiencing all of his consensual firsts was 🥹🥹🥹 and felt really healing. The growth of his character was truly next level and so satisfying. Enter Dove and Jag Rath, both of them were such good counterparts for Wolf. They had such an interesting and complicated stepsibling dynamic. Dove came in fiery as a runaway bride on a mission - I loved her immediately. Jag was unlikable initially but of course you grow to love him after learning who he really was and the sacrifices he made to keep Dove safe. The three of them together were fireworks 🥵🥵🥵🫠🫠🫠. The crossover though?!?! 😱😱😱 I was screaming inside! It was everything I didn’t know that I needed. 🤯 How Pam brought everything full circle was absolute wizardry! It was like coming home and catching up with old friends. 🥰 This book was perfect. This series has and will continue to be one of my favorites!

Spoilers...

Pam godwin has brought the emotional damage back with ink and smoke.

ive said it once and ill say it again. this series is god tier.

plot - god tier
spice - god tier
messed up men - god tier
emotional damage - god tier
twists - god tier

this book is a spin off from the frozen fates series and If there is ever a charter that deserves their own book is Wolf. I absolutley love this guy if I could be his bestie in real life I definitely would! He's so sarcastic and his one liners had me laughing out loud. Although he uses humour to cover his pain it makes you love him even more which just adds to heartache and happiness all in one book!

This book sees the introduction of lots of new characters and when I read the prolouge of this one character my eyes widened. I didn't see this character coming at all. Wolf goes on a dark rollercoaster fairytale adventure in this book. Full of ups and down with an ending you'll least expect. There's one story line that had me in tears. Im gutted this series is done and im praying for a novela. Im not ready to say goodbye to my Alaskan men yet!
