Bo Blackman: The Complete Series by Helen Harper This was a hard series to rate. Each book has very good fantasy sections and very boring sections. Each book is worthy of reading but not reading a second time, but I did read book #1 three times. I love most of this author's books, so I won't stop reading her books. Each book I rated 3 or 3 and a half. Rounding this off to 4 stars for the Complete series.
Definitely 5 stars! I won't write anything about the series or content, but Helen Harper fans will like it. She has a certain way of story telling and it can become predictable when you read a larger number of her œuvre. There are authors who I cannot stand while reading the same story again and again under a different cover. It's different for me with Helen Harper's stories. When I finished the last of the 6 books about Bo Blackman, it still kept my fantasy going. I didn't want to start a new story right away, because I wanted to think about it, dive into the emotions a little longer. This is one of the series that I will most likely read a second time.
Helen Harper did a tremendous job of taking us through the life of a newborn vampire and it was a wild ride. From the fear of the first bite and revulsion of her first meal to the snark and annoying attitude of derision that comes with the fading of humanity to the powerlessness that comes with the reality of your just one person in a huge world. This was so well written I admit I was a complete binge reader for all 6 of these books.
Each of the characters made an indelible stamp on my heart, even the ones I wanted to spray with oil and hold a magnifying glass over them under the hot sun. I have to say this was the most fun I have had reading about vampires in a while.
Family friendly, well let’s say PG-13 to R if you go by language and old standards.
The storyline is really interesting, and has a couple compelling twists. There is a mystery component to the stories , as well as some suspense and action. There are a few places where the story starts to get bogged down in the details of living, making it too easy to put it down and forget about it for a while. In the end I am glad I picked it back up and finished the story.
I listened to this series of books so I didn’t have the typo issues that others had. This is also the first time I’ve read any of Helen Harper’s books and it won’t be my last. I found the premise different than any other book with vampires, demons, humans (of course) and witches so I enjoyed it. It wasn’t scary and was pretty PG. I didn’t mind the cursing. My only issue was all the griping Bo did particularly in the 6th book when she always ended up giving in and letting fragile humans accompanying her on her dangerous tasks. That knocks my score down a few tenths but it still rounds up to a 5.
I have read other series by this author so I jumped into this one as well. I found it a bit darker and depressing than the others but still it engaged me to keep reading. The conclusion was long in coming but the series was nicely sprinkled with mysteries to solve and danger around every corner. The heroine flipped from good girl to bad a bit dramatically and I didn’t understand why she rather arbitrarily decided to murder people (ex black witches). Sorry Helen, I didn’t enjoy this one as much…
I'm a sucker for a complicated morality tale. I had to wait nearly a month before I could tackle the last book! Boy's story is one of love amongst flawed beings, frequently disrupted by the selfishness that derails all relationships to one degree or another. Despite its supernatural cast, it's a kind of humanist Pilgrim's Progress. I intend to reread it because it was so hard, yet so satisfying.
It’s a bit hit or miss but ultimately entertaining
I liked the series. There were parts of pacing, character development, and dialogue that I found really inconsistent. When it worked it was brilliant but when it didn’t I cringed. Overall, it hit more than it missed and kept me entertained.
Helen Harper has given us another engaging series. Bo Blackman is a complex young woman who faces challenges head on and sometimes even gets her choices right! Vampires, demons, witches and humans are all part her London story. Can’t wait for her next series.
Oh my heart was in my throat throughout this book. I was terrified to read another page as Bo struggled to find her way. What an incredible series. Thank you Helen Harper for an incredible kick ass heroine x
I listened to the audiobook when I was sick in bed with Covid. It did somewhat keep me entertained, however the story was not fully developed, and the story just didn’t go anywhere. It’s a shame because this could have been a really entertaining story with better development and editing.
Helen Harper gives the vampire tropes quite the shake up in this series. Loved some of the books more than others that are contained within this box set, but all in all a very satisfying read.
