I listened to book 2 of this series a while ago and enjoyed it. There were a couple spoilers for book 1, but the narrator did a great job for both books and the story/plot were strong.

4 - Under the spell of Wolfe Creek's ardent moon... Stars!

Lone Wolfe Protector is one of those rare books that comes along and completely takes you by surprise. I have to admit after reading the synopsis I wasn’t 100% certain as to what to expect from this story. What I got was eerie, creepy, sexy and surprising. The town of Wolfe Creek itself is like a cross between Sleepy Hollow and Forks, Washington and the people living there are just as unusual.

”Come out, come out, wherever you are.”

Maggie Sullivan has returned to Wolfe Creek looking for answers, one year after the disappearance of her best friend Aimee Styles, whilst they were on road–trip together. Her reception in town is at best frosty, and at worst openly hostile, apart from the local ex-stripper-come-waitress Candi, and Deputy Koda Wolfe, her presence isn’t welcomed or wanted.

”I’ll huff and I’ll puff, and I’ll...

I think the most gripping aspect of this book is that the whodunit and the why, are pretty much left unexplained until the very last page. The story, the location and the overall development leave massive potential for future books as well (fingers crossed from me for that). Although Maggie and Koda’s journey is fully told (but also leaves scope for future expansion), there are a lot of characters in this book, who still have stories that could be told. Candi and Zane (Koda’s brother) spring to mind initially for certain.

”I can’t seem to look at anyone without being suspicious, and you can’t look at certain people and be suspicious.”

This is my first book by Kaylie Newell, I am hoping my second will be a continuation of the Wolfe Creek series!

”Things happen in life. You can choose to be beaten by them, or you can choose to see the beauty and peace that’s almost always there if you look hard enough.”

Well, this is not what I was expecting. I thought there'd be a lot more fantasy elements and/or werewolves, but this was mostly contemporary the whole way.

So while I am disappointed by that, I will say that the atmosphere was nice and spooky and the mystery wasn't predictable. I don't know if I'll be reading the next one though.

Wow. There was so much more to Lone Wolfe Protector than the romance aspect and it was a bewitching read filled with intrigue, mystery and twists that I never anticipated.

description

When Maggie Sullivan and her best friend pass through Wolfe Creek on a road trip, tragedy strikes and Maggie's life is changed forever. A year on she returns, desperate to solve the mystery of what happened to Aimee that fateful night. Koda Wolfe, Deputy Sheriff in the town of his ancestors, is still no closer to solving the case and doesn't particularly appreciate Maggie's sleuthing, but the woman unleashes his protective side and he can't deny helping her find the closure she needs. He also can't deny the feelings he develops... and nor can she.

What we are brought is a whodunnit journey with twists, turns and romantic build up that grabs you and holds on tight until the final page. Kaylie Newell has created an eerie, dark atmosphere yet it is filled with warmth, intimacy and wonderful characters; my heart ached for Maggie and her plight, was filled elation with over Koda's loyalty, protectiveness and gentle nature and certain moments caused it to almost stop beating in anticipation over what was in store.

I've read many novels from the Covet line and this is by far one of the best I have read. With untold secrets and secondary characters who's stories need to be told, it has left me desperate to return to Wolfe Creek. It deserves every single star and is a book I will never tire of reading.

This is a very nice book.I just wish I liked it.

The story line was quite beautiful, especially towards the end. I actually like the main character, the girl, I wish it could have more details on the magic of the family line, but I didn't really care after a while.

Lone Wolfe Protector as a title sounds a lot like a specific type of paranormal romance book that I’ve seen a million times, but it’s not. It has some paranormal elements and some romance elements, but at its heart this is a mystery novel, and an excellent one at that. I put the audiobook version on a few nights ago with zero expectations during a bout of insomnia. Then HELLO the premise grabbed me. The setting is a small, rural town in the mountains with a lot of folklore, history and an eerie atmosphere. One of my favorite types of settings, so I was in. I instantly liked or was at least interested by the entire cast of characters. I noticed that there are more books in this series. I can’t wait to revisit this little town and see what else might be lurking about.
The cover might look like a romance novel plain and simple, but it’s so much more.

This was a slow-building, mysterious, interesting story. In a quiet town nobody has ever heard of, a female arrives grieving and broken over her missing friend. Nobody knows what happened to said friend and this is the story of trying to uncover the secrets of this strange little place.

I loved the dynamic created between Maggie and the lead male. Her heart-ache throughout the story was palpable and those two coming together felt beautiful and raw and right all at once. Like if the world could offer each of them a small slice of comfort, it was them in a matter of moments.

Well done.

Lone Wolfe Protector is the first book in the paranormal romance Wolfe Creek series from author Kaylie Newell. The series itself is centered on the disappearance of Aimee Styles and after a year of being on various forms of media begging for help, Maggie Sullivan, Aimee's best friend and the person she was with on the day she went missing, is back in Wolfe Creek to see how far the case has progressed. She initially meets resistance from sheriff's deputy Koda Wolfe, an ancestor of the founder of the town, but then he finds himself unable to resist the lure of spending time with Maggie. They develop feelings of love and trust over the next few weeks they're together but they also have disagreements when it comes to the case.

This is the kind of series starter that lays the groundwork for future installments as well as introduces readers to the recurring cast of characters. However, there are unresolved story lines that the reader is left with at the end, and you do end up with more questions than you started with. You become curious about what Wolfe Creek and its secrets, as well as what's going on with Koda's younger brother Zane and if he and Candi Brooks will ever find happiness together. Then there's the whole Aimee Styles situation, wherein we do learn what happened to her but we also want to know how she's going to deal with her current state. Lone Wolfe Protector was intriguing and well-written and I'm giving it four out of five stars. ♥

I don't want to say too much and accidentally spoil the story, so review has to be more general.
Maggie is quite the damaged damsel type, which I'm not a fan of. She's stubborn, but that doesn't equate to brave, in my mind. She relies on others to save her repeatedly, and mostly stares like a deer in headlights at any sign of trouble. I actually liked the supporting character, Candi, much better. She's spunky and unique, relatable.
I enjoyed the elements of mystery and suspense, which bumped this book to a 3 star for me. I see average ratings are higher for book two, so will give the next in the series a try.

I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Erica Sullivan - she's a great narrator! The audiobook is included in general Audible membership.

A dark thriller with a well developed plot that draws the reader in and refuses to let them go. With danger and unseen eyes around every corner you will hold your breath as Maggie and Koda search for answers to the disappearance of Maggie's friends. The characters are intelligent and believable. With clues dropped throughout the story you are invited to see it you can find the truth before Kaylie Newell reveals it.

My rating of "Lone Wolfe Protector" is 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Well this book had my head all messed up. I've never been so interested, confused and intrigued in my life. I remember starting this book awhile ago and I could not finish it. This time though, I said "I'm gonna finish this book, no matter what". So if you're thinking what you might be thinking about this book, you're already wrong cause I was. That's part of what messed me up. I was expecting a normal paranormal book about wolf shifters… nay nay… not today Satan. So we've got this girl, Maggie who's driving back to Wolfe Creek to look for her friend, who went missing a year ago. Problem is…. The author continues to go back and forth in Maggie's past memories and her present and after a while you're just trying to clear the cobwebs to make space for what this book is about to do to your head. So she stops in small town Wolfe Creek where the mystery is unsolved, everyone's a suspect and she's the outsider causing trouble. Believe it or not the party of the story that involved the small town folks was the most understandable at this point. You know how they are. Maggie meets one friend outside the inn and that's Candy, who works at the cafe. Candy directs her to the sexy Deputy Koda Wolfe to help her with her missing friend. This is not a meet-cute people. While there may be an attraction there, there's definitely some annoyance and irritation on both sides. He doesn't want her messing with the investigation and she's not leaving. Weird things begin to happen in town and in order to keep her safe, Koda agrees to let her help. They become close but there's still the creepy investigation. The author is still going back and forth into Maggie's memories and some are really sad. It's like a puzzle that is missing a lot of pieces. The story was ok but.. one, this is not a romance so I would re-classify this book… It is a mystery. Two, the back and forth with the memories felt a bit messy or maybe that there was too much, especially when some weren't really giving any clues. Three.. Add more shifter stuff. I mean really, what a let down with that little reveal.

This is the first book in the Wolfe Creek series and the first book of Kaylie Newell’s that I’ve read. Warning: this is a paranormal series. You wouldn’t know that from the book description given on Goodreads. I normally don’t read paranormal. I find it uninteresting. OK, that’s not quite true. I did read the Twilight series and enjoyed it, well until it started to get stupid crazy. That’s just me. Even after I discovered that Lone Wolfe Protector was a paranormal romance I decided to give it a shot anyway. I’m glad that I did.

Koda is the oldest brother of the Wolfe brothers, he’s the protector. He’s also a county sheriff’s deputy, a role that fits him perfectly. He and his brother Zane are the only two Wolfes left in Wolfe Creek. All of his other relatives have met an early and tragic death. Maggie is back in Wolfe Creek to discover exactly what happened to her BFF, Aimee. The two of them were passing through Wolfe Creek a year ago when Aimee suddenly disappeared. No clues were ever found as to what happened to Aimee. Maggie can’t live with that and thinks that the authorities are not doing nearly enough to figure it out. So, she’s decided she’s the one that will have to do it.

That’s how she and Koda meet. Maggie is staying at the Wolfe Creek Inn, which happens to be owned by Koda’s aunt, Ara. Maggie’s room is just a few doors away from the room that Zane is staying in. There’s something strange about Zane, but Maggie can’t figure out just what it is that always has her on edge. This fast-paced story unwinds in an eerie fashion and throws hints at you with almost every page. Some of those hints are useful, some are not. Ms Newell’s writing style is engaging and she builds her characters well. All in all, I’m glad I decided to give this one a shot.

Lone Wolfe (Wolfe Creek, #1) by Kaylie Newell This is romantic suspense with a twist of the supernatural. It's works well as suspense--I ddn't see the ID of the villain until revealed. That's unusual for me. I usually tend to have it figured out. The author, Kaylie Newell, writes in a slow, dreamy way that works, even though it lacks the sense of urgency present in most suspense books. Personally, I like the etheral pace and language. I enjoy this book and will be following it up soom with the other two books in the trilogy. Erica Sullivan, the narrator, did an excellent job with the characterizations. 4.5 stars

Edited to add: I deducted .5 star because the geography messed me up. The book is set in Oregon. But there's mention of a Pike's Peak. Which is in Colorado. There's also a Wolf Creek Pass in SE Colorado. I had a hard time shifting my thoughts from Rocky Mountains to Cascades whenever Pike's Peak was mentioned--which was fairly often. Anyway, that's on me, but there ya go.

I'm always looking for a nice easy to follow audio book to listen to before bed or while I'm working.

Something that's not too intricate that I need to give it my full attention but can still follow along with the story and this fit the bill nicely

I'd say this was less fantasy and more a contemporary mystery romance with a sprinkle of fantasy but it was enjoyable and it's free on audible plus.

The main character Maggie has returned to the town where her friend went missing one year prior with the hope of uncovering the mystery of her disappearance.

With the reluctant help of Deputy Koda Wolfe she begins to uncover what really happened to her friend.

If you're looking for something to listen to that's nice and easy to follow and has a decent bit of mystery to it this is worth a shot.

I've just downloaded the second book which is also available free in the plus catalogue.

Ok so compared to the darker romance novels that led to this one Lone Wolfe was sweet. It is a mystery/ suspense first and romance 2nd. It definitely took some turns I wasn't expecting and it was a gentle, easy storyline. I would recommend this one as a great in between novels for those that do heavier novels or as a great young adult novel / mid teen novel.

I will continue with the series as my go-to in between novels when I need a clean break.

I like how the characters develop and there is a nice flow to the storyline and the relationships.

I gave this 5 stars for completely different reasons then I give other novels. This got 5 because it does cover different readers and is, like I said, a nice read.

Will I re-read? Probably not
Is it my favourite? Far from it
But it is captivating in a sweet way.

I enjoyed this face paced read, narrator did a great job, her voice was smooth and easy. Character development wasn’t as in depth as I would’ve liked and a slightly predictable turn to the story. I was very impressed that the author chose to explore the correlation to Lupus and wolves. I was diagnosed with Lupus in my teens so I always get excited when others especially authors put it out there!! So many people have no idea what Lupus is much less the origins of how it came to be named. Very Creative way to work it in. Made my Lupus Warrior self happy!!! 4 stars overall for the Lupus throw out and a great ending!!

WOW!! I didn’t know what to expect when I added this story to my library on audible — for those with a subscription it is included in the plus catalog. It is always a bonus when the narrators feel as though they were meant to be the ones reading the story!! The narrator really brought the story to life.

The story was very intriguing and kept me engaged from start to finish, I loved the characters in the book especially candy! She was the perfect confidant for Maggie who is the MC. I cannot wait to get into the second installment of the series. Glad I came across this book!

Nice listen on audible (part of their plus catalog). The story line was interesting enough, but there were parts that were slow. The spice is almost non-existent, so if that's you're thing this may not be the series for you. It's also not quite as paranormal as I had hoped - but the idea of werewolves is there. Its a nice world and group of characters.

A definite read/listen for those that are interested in a cute small town type of read that continues through the book series but also can be read out of order.

This book wasn’t at all what I thought it was. It terms of paranormal it was really lacking and while I understand it becomes a larger roles in the later series it just wasn’t integrated enough for me to get hooked.

The contemporary love story was ok. I didn’t hate it. The mystery quality of this though did have my mind going and that is the main reason I am rating this a three.

Not my favorite but not bad.

3.75 Stars for me

I really enjoyed this story until the last 39 minutes and that is only because the dramatic moment was so dragged out and the h turned completely naive. She does put herself in to TSTL moments throughout the story but the beginning talked about how distraught she was.

Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I read some of the reviews as I was listening and almost stopped. SO glad that I didn't!! Way suspenseful and the twist was perfect! I don't want to give anything away but what a way to keep a listener on the edge of her seat!

Halfway through I was almost done but I am so glad that I kept going and am totally going to read the next one!

This was an interesting story. It seemed to be more of a love story than anything else. The ending was a little strange and not expected. I thought there would be more about the actual search for Maggie's friend. It was more about the relationships Maggie developed when she showed back up in town. I'll try the next in the series and decide from there if it's worth any more.

Y'all. The comma splices. So many comma splices.

Seriously though, between heavy-handed metaphors, 100% stereotypical characters (ex-stripper with a heart of gold, stoic and manly Native dude) and utter unlikeability of the main character, I was not super impressed.
