A Kay Tracey Mystery #5

The Six-Fingered Glove Mystery

Rate this book
The thieves start back to the freight car for another load of stolen goods. This is Kay's chance. Quickly she lets herself into the shack and lifts the trap-door. In the dark cellar, dimly lighted by the lamp, she sees many crates and boxes, undoubtedly the thieves' loot. Without hesitation Kay descends the ladder.

Too late she hears footsteps overhead. The men have returned. Kay is trapped! Despite her efforts to conceal herself she is found, dragged from her hiding-place and bound and gagged. Still struggling, she is pushed into a large, empty packing case. The men nail down the cover. In terror, Kay feels the case being lifted and carried. Where are they taking her? She hears the shrill blast of a train . . .

How Kay Tracey works herself out of this tight spot is only part of this exciting story that begins with the teen-age detective joining the hunt for the kidnapper of a beautiful movie star. Playing the part of the glamorous star, Kay finds the trail is hot—and dangerous. The wearer of the six-fingered glove will stop at nothing to throw her off the scent. Even Kay's jealous classmate, Ethel Eaton, does everything she can to thwart Kay—and nearly succeeds.

This is one of the better Kay Tracey books that I've re-read. As a child, on the first time I read it, I was intrigued by the man's deformity of having 6 fingers on one hand. I've never heard of it before and I've never seen it in my life. This one was written by Nancy Drew author Mildred Wirt and her good writing shines through, even though she had to follow an outline.

This is a Thanksgiving story, set in a cold snowy countryside. Kay and her mother, cousin, and the Worth twins are staying with Aunt Jane for Thanksgiving. There are several mysteries, which of course are intertwined. Betty is hit by a car before they leave Brentwood and that same car was involved in a kidnapping case of a famous actress. Kay found a glove with 6 fingers at the scene. Miss Ball, the actress, and her manager, Mr. Minton, are also at Kay's aunt's home. There's a lot of action when Kay is captured twice while snooping at a cabin in the woods. Once she is put on a boxcar, in a crate, bound for New York City. The other time she and Cousin Bill are tied up in a cabin in the woods that is set on fire! Of course it all turns out fine.

This is fun re-reading this series of my youth.

I enjoyed reading this Nancy Drew-type mystery! Since it was actually written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson (the author of many Nancy Drew books), this makes a lot of sense to me. This book is almost indistinguishable from a Nancy Drew.

SIMILARITIES:
●Curious, intelligent and brave young female protagonist (in this case, Kay Tracey instead of Nancy Drew)
●Two young female sidekick friends (a set of twins named Betty and Wilma)
●A lawyer in the immediate family (Kay's cousin, Bill)
●An everyday mystery that turns into a larger mystery
●Hidden rooms, fires, car chases, spies and kidnapping all in the span of a few days

DIFFERENCES:
●The only main difference is that Kay's mother is alive (although she doesn't really play a part in the story at all, except to worry behind the scenes) and her father is not.

This story kept me interested until the end, though it did feel a little tedious at times. Overall, I'm really happy to have found this lovely vintage edition for only $3 and I'll probably read more books in the series, especially the first four before this one. Not the most amazing YA mystery, but still solid and fun to read.

How funny to find this book here. I read it when I was about ten and I absolutely loved it. Probably if I looked at it now I would think differently but what a lovely piece of nostalgia to see it here!

Not one of the better Kay Tracey books, but still enjoyable. A famous actresses problems coincide with the near hit an run accident of one of Kay's friends. During Thanksgiving the girls manage to solve several strangely interlinked crimes

After Wilma is nearly run over, Kay gets invoved with an actress and her agent. The 6-fingered man is trying to take revenge on the agent for him no longer getting any work. The group all go off to Aunt Janes farm where one of her employees is involved in rail car heists. The two groups of crooks join forces, and Bill and Kay are nearly burnt alive before the mystery is solved.
