Tommy Brown’s The Speed of Soul is one of those rare books that’s simple without being shallow. Drawing from 1 Thessalonians 4:9–12, he unpacks four straightforward instructions—love one another, live quietly, mind your own business, and work with your hands—and shows how they can shape a life that’s faithful, grounded, and quietly powerful.
I appreciated how practical and unpretentious the book is. It doesn’t try to be clever or flashy. It just points us back to what it means to live a life that honors God and serves others. In a world that pushes noise and hustle, this book offers a slower, steadier way forward—and it’s one I needed.
Five stars because it’s clear, timely, and genuinely helpful.
In “The Speed of Soul,” pastor and author Tommy Brown draws the reader to take a breath, cease from the hustle, and find new rhythms that help us reclaim a pace that is far more life-giving and fulfilling than letting ourselves be held captive to the pressures we find all around.
The book delves into how, “As we love deeply, live quietly, mind our own affairs, and work with our hands, we create the conditions where our souls can flourish.” Likewise, “these practices cultivate a quiet life that sustains the soul's natural rhythm—the speed of soul” in our noisy, fast-paced world.
This book first grabbed my attention as I thumbed through a chapter midway through one evening. Titled “Living Quietly,” I found myself underlining sentences on several pages as I related to the richness shared on the topic. This was by far the most helpful chapter for me personally; however, each reader will be able to readily glean from the specific areas of the book they most need.
In a world that is speeding by ever more quickly, this is a wonderful book to slow us down just enough to remind and re-engage our souls into the practices of the Christian life that matter most.
Read below for a glimpse at what I highlighted:
“We are hurried people: reactive instead of proactive, jumping from one thing to the next, too busy to plan ahead or be intentional about who we want to be and how we want to be.”
“Without love, the practice of Christian faith becomes twisted in bizarre ways for purposes other than those God intends.”
“We are a lonely people, gazing into the abyss of screens while real people sit next to us on the couch.”
“Does this technology, purchase, or entertainment add to my soul‘s peace and tranquility? Does it contribute tranquility to my friends’ and family’s lives?”
“…your vocation is the way in which the voice of God comes into the world through you—how God communicates to the world something about himself through your life.”
“When you start to see a pattern, you’re on the path to understanding your vocation.”
“Character is forged, and Christ is found, in the small matters that present themselves in our ordinary jobs.”

This short book gave me much to ponder. I appreciate that it provided both sage advice which I readily contemplated embracing in my own life as well as statements with which I wrestled, deciding whether to synthesize or reject based on my current knowledge. The Sound of Soul caused me to think deeply, to pause and discuss those thoughts, and to consider life changing paradigm shifts. The text centers around 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 in which Paul urges believers to love deeply, live quietly, mind their own affairs, and to work with their hands. Tommy Brown fleshes out each of these, explaining how they assist one in finding their center and steadying their soul. While readers are not likely to accept everything he says at face value, there is much here to learn, and wrestling with the other things brings its own kind of awareness.

A friend recommended this book to me yesterday and I had every intention of reading it a bit at a time over the next week, but the no non sense practical application this book encourages and the beautiful picture it paints for anyone brave enough to try and implement these simple life giving soul practices made it impossible to put down!
