Last Call #4

Tall, Dark, & Ginger

Rate this book
My hopeless crush has a plan to get over his ex by getting under me, and I’m up for the task.

I’ve been pining for Wren since the minute I laid eyes on the handsome man with the perfect mouth, wounded eyes, and my personal kryptonite, ginger hair. Too bad he was hands off from the beginning, not only because he was our new chef, but he’s been tangled in a failing relationship the whole time I’ve known him.

When he finally decides to dump his ex and needs a place to stay, enter me and my big house to the rescue. I want to be respectful, give him time to see me as an option, but one night he offers me an arrangement. My hell, yes.

Powered by need for each other, neither of us thought about what would happen next. We’re two guys without a clue, making decisions with the wrong head, but what we have together is too good for either of us to just walk away.

Before Wren, I was firmly a beer guy, but now that I’ve tasted the sweet bite of the prettiest ginger ever, there’s no going back. This is one combination that’s never coming off the menu if I can help it.

Tall, Dark, & Ginger is book fourin Last Call, a contemporary series set in the New Onyx universe. You can expect a chill guy who’s only down for hookups, a guarded chef trying to find himself again, an impulsive decision that changes everything, a heaping helping of one fell first, the other fell harder, a dash of hurt/comfort with a dollop of sexy shenanigans, plenty of sizzling heat, and all the ingredients for a satisfying comfort dish as two men find themselves navigating the one thing neither expected- love.

I like low angst sweet stories full of healing, hilarious moments, steam, and heartfelt emotions...and Tall, Dark, & Ginger is just perfect. Wren is now single and wants to rediscover who he truly is; his needs and wants. He has his dream job but maybe he should start looking at his love life differently. Who better to help him explore but his sexy boss, Ridley. He has hit the jackpot!

Ridley is laid back, understanding, but always thought that he never wanted a relationship. But Ridley has had a crush on Wren since he first saw him. There was something about Wren that tugged at Ridley's heart and piqued his interest. When Wren approached him with a "special" request Ridley couldn't say yes fast enough. They both got what they wanted and needed while having a lot of fun. Little do they realize that fate has more in store for them.

There was no unnecessary drama...they both worked beautifully through their unexpected feelings, letting the strong emotional connection develop naturally. Neither was demanding or pushing the other for more than what was possible, just offered unconditional support, acceptance, and honesty. Best part was Wren realizing his self-worth. The communication between these two .... outstanding and so perfectly; perfect.

I can't wait to start the next story, and I am a bit sad that it's the last one in this series, but it will be great to see all the guys finally paired up when Jerryn and Bane, finally have their dreams realized. Great series and well worth the reading time as I have found all of Mia Monroe's books to be.

This book has zero angst. Honestly, it’s mostly Wren and Ridley having sex. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but there wasn’t a whole lot of depth to the story as far as their relationship went. It was only 202 pages, but it felt much longer to me. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. I guess I just kept waiting for something other than them hooking up every night with little else happening. Sure, they get closer as a couple of sorts during all the sex, but, again, zero angst or conflict. Even the jerk ex didn’t add much drama.

Also, there’s an age gap mentioned, but no ages. All I know is that Ridley is in his forties, and that Wren is younger.

I love the cover.

This was underwhelming. I expected more from their story. After all, their story was teased for a while now. I liked the pacing but when they got together it was underwhelming. Yes, there was an age gap, but we still don't know how big?? Also, I love that they are verse and I love the friendship and found family trope in here.

I was so excited, this book was shaping up to be 5 stars but then went to 4 stars because the only thing they seemingly could come up with to have in common was horror movies. It lost another star for how quick and insta-lovey the ending was.

1st person, present tense, dual PoV
Ridley (40+), co-owner of Moby’s Bar and Dining (former chemical engineer)
Wren Clark, executive chef at Moby’s Bar and Dining

This is a series of interconnected books and while it can be read as a standalone, the characters consist of a group of six university friends returning to the small town where they met to open a queer resto bar (Moby's), and this pairing has been teased since the beginning. There are a couple of plot elements concerning other characters that are unresolved at the conclusion of this book as they are foreshadowing another relationship and references to previously established relationships (which aren't super spoilery). In the blurb it's described as being set in the New Onyx Universe which I haven't read and didn't really feel like I was missing out on anything other than a reference to a tertiary character which flew right over my head.

This book is the delightful payoff for three books worth of pining in which Ridley is absolutely infatuated with Wren. Since Wren was first already in a relationship and then newly single after that toxic situation imploded, not to mention being an employee of Moby's, Ridley had not acted on his attraction and had no plans to do so.

I love that these two started off as friends and bonded over common interests and insomnia. I also like that a fair amount of time had elapsed between Wren's split from Trent so that it was believable to that he would be at the point that he would be poking his head up and starting to move onward and upward. Swinging from being a serial monogamist to wanting a fling made logical sense for him though I really wish Wren had gotten approached Ridley on his own and not because others spilled the beans about Ridley's crush. Still, knowing about the crush gave the cheeky little rabbit the confidence to make his move and boy did he!

More than the romance, I adored Wren's character arc. I loved his journey of self discovery and enjoyed seeing him come into his own. It was refreshing to see a character who desperately needed therapy actually seek it out - that gets all the stars right there. He and Ridley build a believable relationship predicated on good healthy communication, even when things changed they didn't shy away from having a conversation about it for long. The inevitable confrontation with his toxic twatwaffle of an ex was supremely satisfying.

Ridley, although extremely likeable and amiable, didn't feel as well developed and I yearned to gain a deeper understanding of him. Ridley being exactly what Wren needed when he needed it was about as deep as we get, which left him feeling like a secondary character in his own story at times. I found that him having a one and done approach to sex without any real exploration as to why to be a missed opportunity and considering that also describes half of this friend group, it also felt a little tired. Although not specifically stated, Ridley reads as possibly aromantic and that would have been a more interesting dynamic to explore in my opinion.

I can't wait for Love Potion to read about Bane and Jerryn.

If you’re looking for a sweet, heartfelt MM romance, Tall, Dark, & Ginger delivers in all the best ways. This story is full of charm, heat, and emotional depth. Basically everything I love in a romance!

Ridley completely stole my heart. He’s so effortlessly chill and supportive, the kind of guy you’d want in your corner no matter what. His quiet strength and unwavering honesty really grounded the story. And then there’s Wren—oh, Wren. Watching him rediscover himself and come into his own was truly beautiful. His talent, vulnerability, and passion made it impossible not to root for him.

My favorite parts of this book were the sizzling chemistry between Ridley and Wren, the raw honesty in their conversations, and their genuine desire to grow, not just for each other, but for themselves. They didn’t shy away from their flaws or the messy parts of healing. Instead, they leaned into the discomfort and showed what it means to really choose someone, day after day.

This book has all the right ingredients: the perfect mix of tension and tenderness, hurt/comfort, and a whole lot of heart. A satisfying, slow-burn romance with the kind of emotional payoff that lingers long after the last page. Highly recommend!

I love this series so much! Fans of the series have read Ridley crushing on Wren ever since the chef started working for them but now he's also living in their shared house (read: mansion) and has gotten to the point he's looking to move forward from his ex.
I love the found family/close friendships that the guys from this series have. All of the new partners fold in so easily and Wren, as chef at their bar and now roommate, fits in so easily. Ridley's crush is pointed out to him and he has the idea of taking that step to help him move forward physically, emotionally and mentally. It's not exactly a hardship for Ridley, having crushed on the younger man for a while but what is different for him, is the need he constantly has for Wren.
Ridley was always a hookup guy, never really had a relationship. But things with Wren are different in every way. It's so sweet and heartwarming to read the support that he offers without thought and the chemistry between them is off the charts.
I loved this book from the start and can highly recommend it. I now cannot wait for the final book of the series. That's going to be interesting with how things are left in the epilogue here ..
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

- series
- boss/employee
- high heat
- insomniacs to lovers

This is the 4th in the Last Call series, and while there are recurring characters it can be enjoyed as a standalone. I've been waiting for this story since we met Ridley and Wren in the previous books, and have had to watch Ridley pine over Wren for 3 books until they finally get to tell their story. I think it wasn't the right time for them until now, and it was so perfect for them. Ridley isn't a relationship guy, strictly no strings while Wren is coming out of a toxic relationship but is still looking for that elusive HEA.

I liked both guys very much, how easily they both got together and were open to it perhaps being more than they'd initially signed up for. I particularly liked how Wren was so open to working on himself and going to therapy so he could have more without fear holding him back. It's low angst though and these two were just such a great fit it was a joy to get to read and enjoy their story.

I've very much enjoyed this series and really look forward to Bane and Jerryn now.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I love this series so much!

Wren and Ridley are such a great couple and watching them find their way through initial lust to bigger, more romantic feelings was *chef's kiss*. I enjoyed how low angst this was; yes, Wren and Ridley both have some stuff to work through and yes their relationship is not instantly perfect, but they worked through things like adults who can actually communicate. As a result, the actual angst between them was almost nil. Even better, they had this genuine respect for each other that, I'll be honest isn't always there with book couples, that meant that they were willing to show each other kindness and grace. It's just really nice to read about people who are willing to talk and be there for each other. I'll admit, I think I'll always love New Onyx first and foremost for its lovely supernatural side, but this series is almost as good (and that's pretty amazing!). I'm really enjoying this series and I can't wait for more, but I'm also kind of sad because the more books we get the closer to the end of the series.

LOVEEEEEEEED THIS !!! this series is so fucking good, and so easy to read.

i knew i was gonna love this one too bc this entire series has been five stars. i’m so excited for the next book as i’m writing this review i’ve already downloaded the next book 💀

rid is sooooo fucking sweet and patient, my man wanted to blurt out “i’m in love with you” so many times before he actually said it. and wren, he’s a sweetheart who deserves everything good and nice in the world and rid is definitely the man for him.

“i love looking at you. i always have”

“you got me wrapped around your finger, chef. just remember that”

“rid”
“shh, babe. i got you”

“hanging out with you is still the best part of my day”

“i’ve got this”
“you’ve absolutely got this”

“you drive me wild, chef”

“thanks for defending me”
“of course. i’m your man. at least i want to be”
“i’d like that too”

“i’ve never been in love before, but i’m positive i am now”

“ridley, you amazing man, can’t you see i’ve been falling all along?”

“i have everything i want”
“everything?”
“yes”

ATE IT UP. 10/10.

I've adored getting to know Wren and Ridley as side characters in the previous Last Call books and now that it's their turn, the result is a lovely slow building story that brings the heat before the romance and lets these two grow into each other's safe space to really have a true romantic relationship. From being rescued to rescuing Ridley from himself, Wren's character is sweet and gutsy and I totally love that for him... the once overconfident Ridley is much more nervous and totally clueless and it's also lovely to watch.

I love that while it's slow, the emotional build in this story is truly epic and these two men get exactly what they deserve! With this being the penultimate book, I am struggling between desperately wanting that final story and wanting this universe to go on forever...

While this book can be read standalone, I think it's best read as book 4 in the series and best read in order.

Ridley has been attracted to Wren since the first moment he saw him, but with Wren in a relationship he kept it friendly. Wren is now a free man and wants to try not having a relationship. He gets up the nerve to ask help from someone he trusts and that is safe. Ridley and Wren are good together. They are able to help each other out in a few different ways and to start learning more about themselves.

I have enjoyed this series since the beginning and I have liked each new book in the series. I appreciate that our main friend group is older and don't play around. They have figured out what they don't want in life at this point, even while still learning what they are looking for. I appreciate that they are mature enough to figure out how to communicate and to not take everything personally.

I hope that you give this book and series a chance. While this is able to be enjoyed without reading the previous books, I highly recommend that you start with book one for full enjoyment.

Falling without realizing

I was excited for Ridley and Wren’s story. The road to this HEA has been brewing over a few books and these men deserved it! I appreciated how much of a gentleman Ridley was when it came to respecting Wren and communicating with him throughout their story. The communication in this book honestly deserves a gold medal because both these men continued to check in with each other, reassure each other in moments where they were scared of voicing their feelings, and they validated those feelings while being transparent about their own! A beautiful show of proper and healthy communication in a developing relationship. And this type of communication seemed very important for Wren and Ridley to feel comfortable and trust the relationship they were unknowingly building. These two so naturally fell in love and their story was beautiful in how it showed that!

This book follows two insomniacs on their way to becoming lovers. Although it deals with some heavier themes like abusive relationships and a traumatic childhood it is very light-hearted and I really enjoyed that. We have been teased with this particular pairing since book 1 in the series so I really liked seeing the story conclude. I loved seeing Ridley's chill and how much space he gave Wren to grow. The relationship development was very nice and based on honesty and communication which is always a good thing. Both of the MCs had things to figure out and/or work on but they didn't see it as a limiting factor but as a chance to grow. I really like the found family in these books and how much the "new" partners fit so well into this circle of friends. Now I'm excited for the last book.

"Maybe I’ll just be the weird old guy creeping around the mansion, being everyone’s third wheel.”

This is the 4th book in the Last Call series by Mia Monroe and it looks like there'll only be one more book... that's going to be a sad day!

Ridley and Wren finally get their story. All these guys deserve their "white picket fences" and with each book written in the series, I've been excited to see how Mia makes this happen. She hasn't let me down yet!!!

Ridley has kept his secret crush on Wren secret from Wren but not anyone else. Wren is completely oblivious, not quite as bad as Jerryn but almost.

Hurt/comfort, opposites attract (serial relationshipist and a rolling stone), patience and insomnia pays off, communication is key

Such a great story. A perpetual bachelor crushing on the cute ginger chef just out of a toxic relationship.

Wren is oblivious to Ridley’s crush, but one insomnia-induced night, Wren asks Ridley to help him move on from his ex.

They both want casual, but as the nights of movies and sex go by, it seems less and less casual.

It’s a sweet progression - bonded by a love of horror and zombies, and just the easy time they have together, they both need to learn to trust that forever could be in the cards.

This was such a sweet and gentle love. Ridley has pined for Wren since the day they met but he had a boyfriend and so he was there for him as a friend as well as a boss. When Wren broke up with his boyfriend he opened up his house to him so he could regroup and figure out his next steps. Regardless of his feelings, Ridley never did anything for Wren expecting something in return. He just wanted to be someone he could count on. When Wren eventually approaches him about a NSA arrangement Ridley is happy to jump on board and hopes to win his heart if he can.

If you’re looking for a low angst love that will make you swoon and still has heat, I highly recommend reading.

“Tall, Dark, & Ginger” is the fourth book in the Last Call series by Mia Monroe. I will admit, I love this author and am always excited to get a new book from them. This book has everything I have come to expect from Mia Monroe, a great story with great characters. Even when there are parts that pull on my heart strings there are equal moments that make me laugh out loud. Ridley has been pining for Wren since he was hired at Mobys. Wren has had a rough go with his previous boyfriend. Their story is such a sweet read. And it is great to see how the previous couples are doing. I am looking forward to what comes next in this series.

Another enjoyable read in the Last Call series.

I really liked both Wren and Ridley, and their sweet but spicy relationship story; watching them fall for each other over insomniac sex while both being unsure of how much the other one wanted, both worried the other might move on at any moment.

I loved Ridley for his quiet, supportive nature; he held Wren up through everything that went down. Wren was super sweet and deserved a nice guy like Ridley after his previous exes and his family. Having an older MC is nice, and having one that communicates is even nicer.

I enjoyed seeing the other loved-up couples from the previous books, and I'm looking forward to Bane and Jerryn's book.

Ridley & Wren

Low angst
Healing
Hurt / Comfort
Finding true love
Insomniacs

These two were incredible, low angst, sweet, tender, and funny.

Ridley was so easy going, Wren's safe space after what he has gone through with his ex in his past, now safe to explore himself and blossom at work and have fun at nights with Rid.

I really enjoyed this series. The guys are all great, little to no drama, no real third act break ups. Everyone is so supportive.

I adored watching Ridley fall in love, he had a crush on Wren for so long, him thinking he wouldn’t fall lol

They were great together.

“I love you, Wren. I’m absolutely wild about you.”

“Thank you for being the man I hoped you were.”

This was such a great read! Ridley has had a crush on their new chef Wren from day one but he was in a relationship albeit a not good one. Wren works for the guys at Moby’s and has finally left his bad relationship but he definitely has a lot of healing to do. These two are just adorable! I loved watching Wren grow more confident and understanding of his situation! There was no angst between these two which was awesome! Loved watching them fall for each other! I love all these characters and how sweet they all are! Very enjoyable story that I highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book

Wren and Ridley...

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this one. I really liked Wren, his back story and how he grew in this story (gained confidence and became more selfaware). Ridley was cool...just a laidback dude. I would say the only thing I didn't like was this same let's fool around with the understanding that its not going to be more. It was like okay, how many times do we have to read this trope in the same series.

I did also like everything going on in the story...it wasn't just Wren and Ridley and steam...things happening making it a good, full story. Getting excessive on the "you knows".

Beautiful cover model...tattoos, yum!

Tall, Dark, & Ginger is a heartfelt MM romance that blends charm, emotional depth, and slow-burn intensity. Ridley’s quiet strength and unwavering honesty make him a grounding force, while Wren’s journey of self-discovery and passion is captivating. Their chemistry is electric, but what truly shines is their commitment to growth, not just for each other, but for themselves as well. With raw, honest conversations and a perfect balance of tension and tenderness, this novel delivers a deeply satisfying romance that lingers long after the final page.

Wren has been hurt enough in the past he doesn't see it possible to be in a healthy relationship. Ridley, however, never saw the need for a relationship. He does as he wants and moves forward. When Wren proposes fwb, he sees it as a means to get past a long-standing crush. What makes these two works so beautiful together is the slow build-up to a real relationship. They support one another to be the better person and flourish without expecting more than either is ready for. you feel their emotions deepen as their friendship blossoms. Nothing is forced. Just is what it needs to be at that point. Wren does the brave thing in seeing a therapist to see how he can have better lasting relationships, and it's not shown as an easy fix but growth, with the amazing support of the Mobys crew. Absolutely adored everything about this book, my favorite to dat from this series. With only one more story to go, I am sad to see a close of this series, yet happy to see each of these men find the right person for the group as a whole.

Part of the Last Call Series. This book focuses on Wren and Ridley. Ridley and his friends opened Moby's Bar and from the start he was drawn to Wren. However, he just looked and pined since Wren is now the new chef at the bar and he is struggling in a falling relationship.
Wren loves his job at the bar, he is getting over his nasty relationship and is clueless that Ridley likes him.
Wren and Ridley are really sweet. what starts as friends with benefits turns into so much more.

Ridley & his Rabbit ❤️

I always come away from reading Mia’s stories with a smile on my face. They are definite comfort reads and I love them. Ridley and Wren were both so unbelievably sweet and soft for one another. I love how they came together and I liked how Wren went to therapy. It helps to see it in a positive way. I can’t wait to see Jerryn finally realize how in love Bane is…these two will be so good!

I adored Ridley & Wren together, and especially love the way they "go with the flow". The guys of Moby's are all intriguing, interesting characters, and I'm glad Ridley gets his Ginger rabbit in the end. Wren is much stronger & more capable than he believes, & Ridley was there to show him just how much good support & care can do. Looking forward to Bane & Jerryn's journey from the friend-zone. This should be interesting ...

Super sweet, low angst. Ridley has been pining for Wren since he first walked into the bar to apply for a job! and Wren, because he was dealing with some personal stuff, didn't notice all the stares Ridley was giving him so he was completely clueless about Ridley's crush on him! it really is an adorable book on finding your person and how they can give you the strength to better yourself! I loved this whole series! I can't wait for Jerr and Bane's book!
