DAMN!! That ending!

Rating: 5/5 🌟

Literally this book starts right where we left off from book one and it’s starts with a BANG and it ends with a BANG! I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do now knowing this book literally just came out less than 20 days ago and who knows when books 3 comes out..

We get more trials and even more powers throughout this books and if you know me I’m a sucker for a book with trials! I thought each trial was written very well and was not rushed and gave us readers enough time during and between each trial.

Book is written very well and it is a very easy and fun read! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

I found myself losing interest. there is no depth to the fmc and mmc's relationship. they barely met in the first book and suddenly his eyes are telling her oh so much and then he is madly in love in this one... why!? I got no hint that she thought about him all the time or that the thought of Kestral consumed her in any way until one point we are suddenly told this. The writing style is very choppy in my opinion, the author skims over what should be given in more detail.
Why is it that Veles just conveniently has seen this green stone before and can save the day? Why is there suddenly a god in the arena when all the other beasts were mimics!? Things just seem to happen that don't make any sense. The characters just don't give a feeling of any growth... sadly I don't think I will continue with this series.

4.25 Stars 🌟

The story picks up where the last book left off, with the FMC Seren facing yet another dire situation, fighting for her life once more. To avoid imminent death, she agrees to a deal with a mysterious Fae man, requiring her to participate in the Chosen Tournament, survive its trials, and retrieve a green stone from the castle’s catacombs – a task that proves far from easy, especially with everyone out to get her and her life constantly threatened by fellow contestants.

I found the storyline to be jam packed with nonstop action, drama and adventure, which made for a thrilling read. The angst levels are high and the fighting scenes abundant, although some may feel they’re a bit repetitive. However, that cliffhanger at the end is truly jaw dropping! I’m eagerly awaiting book three.

There’s no way this wasn’t written with ChatGPT I just can’t prove it. The writing is unbearable. The FMC is unbearable. The repetition is unbearable. I am so sorry I thought the first book had potential to really open up a whole series but this is genuinely upsetting and frustrating to continue drudging through.

What happened ?!? The first book had such a good plot , it was well written and flowed so nicely then we get to this book and it went down hill .

This book had so much going on that the actual plot got lost in the mix . There was no need for her to go through so much torture and abuse and for her mate to stand by and not do a thing didn’t settle with me . It was betrayal after betrayal for what ?!? To end on a bogus cliffhanger we all saw coming 3 miles away .

As far as a fated mates book goes this isn’t it , that man is absolute trash. He fights their bond at every chance he gets , acts disgusted at her powers , then only focuses on the fact that she’s the god killer . For as slow of a build up their romance was and how long it took for him to finally give in the spicy scenes gave me an ick factor I couldn’t put my finger on .

Not to mention this clearly said was a duet but it ended on a cliffhanger mid plot or side plot actually. The second book felt like they drugged her and thrusted her into a completely different book with a completely seperate plot . The second star was a curtesy honestly .

I'll just summarize this quickly because honestly this consumed way too much of my time already

- She keeps getting knocked out at the end of almost all chapters, but miraculously survives and thrives in the next one

- She still has a martyr complex and doesn't accept help from anyone because girl NEEDS to save the world all by herself

- A fated-mates situation that's actually mediocrely done. They barely spend time together but are deeply attracted to each other.

- Oh you were expecting plot development here? Sorry. No. More trials. Like left right a center, in your face trials. You want a bit of respite and actual character development? Sorry, more trials. You are fed up of seeing the FMC getting beat within an inch of her life? Sorry, more trials.
You want characters to actually shine outside of a defensive setting? Sorry, more trials.
( The audacity of the author in basically doing plot recycling with two different, back-to-back books)

- Things keep miraculously working out for everyone, especially the FMC. Yes, she's taking a beating pretty much everyday, but don't worry, because there's always a solution that's actually accessible in a short period of time.
One of the trials require mind illusion training. Sure, let me just do one quick 5 min lesson with this half-fae and now I'm proficient in it.
The FMC has a nasty set of injuries after each trial, but a healers always leave leave her good as new.
It's almost like there's no point in so much suffering and grit because shit always works out.

- Curses are introduced halfway through what was supposed to be a final book in a duology. So I guess this will not be a duology anymore. I hate investing my time in a series I don't know how many books will have.
Kestrel is cursed by his mother. Why? We don't need to know why. We just need to know that he is and go with it.

- The author adjective's repertoire is severely limited. A dictionary might be useful next time. Do you know how many times I read the word foolish in both books? More than 50.

- At least 20% of this book is her running through corridors, opening doors, finding hidden spaces, walking up and down the stairs, walking into passages, strolling through tunnels, etc. You get the gist.

- The writing is still... Subpar. She writes like one would talk in a conversation.

I will not be continuing with this series.

If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. It took everything I loved about book 1 and amplified it, AND added some slow burn romance as a bonus. This book is where you start to really see the Irish folklore intersection, from the Gods to the mythical creatures, it's interwoven seamlessly with the world building and cultures already established.

Seren continues to shine in this book. We get to see more of her combat and more of her heart. And if the trials in book 1 felt anticlimactic, this book is non-stop action where every trial feels more intense and the stakes are forever raised.

Initially, my only nitpick for this book was the fact that it took 58 pages for Seren to even mention her family and all the problems happening at home that put her on this path in the first place. Yet the more I think about this book (because yes, I keep thinking about it long after having finished it) the more it makes sense. Seren has been in survival mode. She's been fighting for her life ever since she signed up for the guard competition and has lost more and more of her own ability to circumvent the consequences. There's no sneaking out from a cell to take a bath in this book, Seren is locked into her course magically and often physically with no respite. She's exhausted just trying to survive one trial after another, where the system is already unfairly skewed against her. She hasn't had a quiet moment to process, and eventually we see the weight of all she's carrying finally catch up with her and reforge her rather than breaking her.

To recap, this book is utter perfection- angst, ALL the action and much longer trials, monsters, character growth and interesting side characters, and all the complications that come with a magical geas. This book is even better than the first, with some twists I saw coming but still was invested in and others I didn't see at all. And the ending is perfection - especially because you realize his mother might be right. Also the world building, magic system, blight, hints at politics all suggest that book 3 will be spectacular as well. And the betrayal!!!

I'm giving this a 3 star review. I thought it was going to be the second part of a duology but apparently not...

What I liked:
- It starts where it left off and there is immediate peril, which leads to a high stakes bargain being made.
- I like trials based books so this hit the trope for me
- The Hunter/Kestrel thing could've been more subtle, but I liked how this was used to develop Seren's and Kestrel's relationship
-Action sequences were better in this one and she was more falleable which felt more realistic
-Liked the comradery in the trials between Seren and her three allies
- The cliffhanger ending is compelling

What Let Me Down:
- I liked the idea of Kestrel being Cursed, but have no idea why his mum has done it? There's no wider context and how he overcomes it is so vague, it doesn't feel right.
- Why would his mum/the queen make Kesteral marry a woman that turns into a monster in a cave? There is no context for why this bride is chosen for Kestral and no commentary on her being killed. Not sure why this was included.
- Veles finding the green gem was too convenient. Seren's search was so random for it, there could've been more clues.
- The wider goings on in the world felt half hearted. We get dribs and draps of what is going on else where and I almost forget when reading what the issue with the Gods are- ironic considering the name of the books.
- Why is there one real God at the end? How did they get him there? Why would Kestral not mention this when showing Seren the final trial?
- Seren spends too much timing passing out and then miraculously being cured to full health (this got repetitive and annoying).
-Whatever happened to Leora?!

I did enjoy this book and I read through it quickly, but there were some core issues leading to the 3 star review.

High Stakes Trials, Bad A** FMC, Fated Mates and More

Wow! What a whirl wind! This was WILD! Usually when I read book two in a series one of two things happens the world starts to fall flat OR the world takes on a whole new meaning and I am SUCKED IN! The Gods we Defy for sure sucked me in! I couldn’t put it down and am dying for someone to read it and have unhinged conversations with! Soraya Cole knocked this out of the park! I was nervous when it started it would feel repetitive but it didn’t and the twists and turns had my jaw dropping and my hands gripping my Kindle. This book has villains you will HATE, betrayal that will make you want to chuck your book across the room, spice that will take a fan to cool you off, and a story that makes you LOVE the characters! That cliff hanger *chefs kiss

Tropes:
🗡️found family
🗡️badass FMC
🗡️forced enemies to lovers
🗡️touch her and die
🗡️who did this
🗡️burn the world for her
🗡️magic systems
🗡️high stakes trials
🗡️slow burn
🗡️betrayal

Alriiightttt!

I loved book one and I knew I’d love book two (yeah, I didn’t really wait and DMed the author 🤣)

I inhaled this book!

After finishing book one, I just couldn’t wait and I’m so grateful for Soraya to have sent me this copy prior to the release! Now, I cannot wait to listen to it once it’s out on audio!

This book was just a page-turner and before I knew it… it was finished 🥹

I just NEED MORE! (I’m not aggressive, I swear 🤣)

I was gripped from start to finish.
I might also be in love with the MMC and other side characters, but that’s another story 😆

I’m really bad without spoiling anything, but if you’re looking for a badass FMC, Gods. Fae, Powers, Betrayal, Magic System, Profecy… please, I’m begging you, check this out!
I’ll not shut up about it!

Soraya deserves everything! She’s so sweet and I cannot wait to see what she brings to the series.

Be aware that this is an unfinished series which should have 4/5 books total but boy if it isn’t worth it!

Now, I cannot wait for the audiobook to be out 🖤

The God's We Defy
Okay, she's kidnapped, then just sold. Seeing how they were trying to kill/break her in the first book, that  seems a bit odd. Yes, she's sold into a vicious fighting syndicate. You win or die. Another bargain to get out. It seems Seren has to fight to stay alive again and again. In fact, that's the main theme. Kill or be killed, no reprieve.
We know who the godkiller is going to be.
Then there's the mating bond, and you are attracted to another person. I'm no expert on mate bonds, but I'm sure that doesn't happen. And that twist was  predictable. There was a good twist towards the end. I thought he was going to betray her in the first book. So I was surprised.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It's not as good as the first one. Predictable in parts. And yes, I'll read the next one. As the ending left you with a sense, there's another book coming. I mean, there's the cruel evil queen and Oryn

I found the main character extremely frustrating—her narcissism and martyr complex made it difficult to sympathize with her. Throughout the book, the supporting characters genuinely try to help her, but she consistently treats them with disdain and refuses to acknowledge their efforts. I kept hoping this behavior would lead to some meaningful character growth, but unfortunately, that never happened. Instead, her stubbornness and self-absorption remained unchanged, which made the story increasingly aggravating. It was disappointing to see her continually push people away, even when they were clearly trying to accommodate her. Overall, I did not enjoy this book at all.

Unfortunately not what I was wanting to read.

This book was so repetitive and I felt that there should have been more opportunity to flesh out the relationships rather than having the FMC constantly put in situations where she's on the verge of dying.

Also was it just me or was the Hunter story arc so obvious?

I don't think I'm interested enough in the story to want to read the remaining books. Additionally I found that the author's writing style didn't improve at all :(

Overall the beginning is good but the end was really not all that.

Keeps getting better and better

Oh my gosh, that cliffhanger!

This second book in the All Gods Must Die series is just as good as the first. Incredible. I love how strong and intelligent Seren is - she is the perfect balance of powerful without being arrogant or annoying. Also, delighted to see our MMC, Kestral finally being able to surrender for his mate. However…what will happen to the two of them after that anxiety inducing cliffhanger? Trusting Soraya’s process here.

Definitely going to buy this in hardcopies to add to my book collection. Looking forward to book 3!

wow.
Seren is still being underestimated and taking down stronger opponents left and right.
Fighting for her life and the world is a lot to have on her shoulders and she rises to the challenge each time.
I'm not sure how much more pain I can take reading about with her. She has suffered enough and there better be a HEA when this all ends.
With a strong fmc, mates, found family and the chosen one, add in a dash of spice and this was a fantastic follow up to book 1.

AMAZING!!

This book had me in a chokehold. Now I am a romance reader, the kind that likes a heavy romance plot involved but this is not that way and I ate this UP. Now don’t let that deter you, there is romance! It is SO interesting and so captivating. The cliffhanger!!! Ahhhhhhh need book 3 soon or I might die 😫

Okay . 2 books in . The story is still interesting but it also feels unfinished, or not fully thought out . The insta mate stuff is a bit ridiculous although I like the characters . The world however, gets more interesting, even if the world building could be more intricate or detailed . It didn’t suck so I’ll give it a solid 3 stars . I was on sick leave and it cured my bad mood.

It was a good time!

It was a good time, but I have questions.
First off, why do we wait so long for her to find herself? Not minutes before the end of the book would have been helpful.
Let me also ask why is this girl always getting knocked out if she is so skilled? After so many, you see it coming.

Definitely one of the most slow burns, but let me say I didn’t even need the spice. This book was even better than the last, and I’m sad there’s not more books out. Read it in less than a day, and I’m destroyed. I honestly wish that I didn’t happen across a TikTok until the series was complete, but I will be “patiently” waiting for more.

Great read, couldn’t put it down!!

I really loved book 2! Not loving the thought of waiting for the next book! Some of the romance felt a LITTLE rushed. Going from “hate” to the “I love you’s” without any real build up or interaction was meh, but the rest of the book was really good!

This book/story has SO much potential, it’s almost heartbreaking. A good editor would make a huge difference to spot and correct some of the plot holes.

However, I love the way that this author writes. It is extremely creative writing that always keeps you engaged and on the edge of your seat.

I loved these books but you know how you get to about 50-100 pages left and there is a lot of stuff to wrap up… yep, thought the series was done. Now the agonizing wait begins. Guess it means I’ll be reading them again in the future.

This series feels half baked, it has so much potential, but I feel that we are really only at a surface level with the characters and the story, we never get to spend enough time actually knowing them, and therefore it’s difficult to care too much about what happens to them.
