The Arterian #2

Of Blood & Banes

Rate this book
Secret never die. They’re just buried in a grave.
And graves don’t stay hidden forever.

Katerina Blackwind and Daeja made it to the Dragon Lands. It should have been the key to their freedom.

Instead, it’s only the beginning.

The King is closing in—desperate for the one thing Kat possesses. The one thing that’s been missing for ages. The one thing he’ll tear the entire kingdom apart to claim.

Worse, Kat is caught between two men who broke her trust—Cole, whose lie shattered her heart, and Darian, who isn’t just a stranger… he is the enemy. With betrayal at every turn, Kat must decide who—if anyone—she can trust before it’s too late.

But the secrets of the past lie in a place no one has set foot in for over a century—guarded by magic and buried under years of forgotten history and bloodshed.

If Kat fails to uncover the truth in time, the last of the dragons—and everyone she loves—will be lost forever.

And their blood will be on her hands.

🌟 4.5 stars rounding up 🌟 because some scenes in here HURT ME IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌.” 𝑰 𝒑𝒖𝒔𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒎, 𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒊𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒚𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒕. “𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕.”

Since this is the second book, I won’t dive into spoilers, but I do hope this review convinces you to start the series because Holy mother of dragons, this series is going to be the death of me 👀

If you love dragons, and no, I’m not just talking about the typical dragons you see in books BUT one you meet AS A BABY in Book 1 who is now a youngling… agh, you will absolutely adore this book.

And it’s not just about dragons. Now that we have the foundation from Book 1, this story is about our girl Kat learning about herself and preparing to battle. Not only physically, but emotionally. OH and the love triangle? It’s making me pull my hair out even though, obviously, I’m rooting for one team only (and the first quote is from my MAN … I won’t spoil). BUT THE YEARNING. THE SOFT SIDE TO THE ROUGH EXTERIOR. Give it to me ALLLLLLL.

“𝑵𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚, 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒄𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒔. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝑰 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝑰’𝒎 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.”

I loved every second of this book. Yes, some parts dragged (as book 2s often do, building up to the storm that’s coming), but the character development? SO GOOD.

If you have a soft spot for morally grey men, plot twists, and of course DRAGONS, then this is a series you need to pick up 🐉

Oh I am still recovering from the last 10% it gave me straight up emotional whiplash lmao.

oh my fucking god this book was AMAZING!!!! a 600+ page book that i FLEW through and didn’t feel long at all because it felt like i was living in this story but also, i just could not put my kindle down. i am not joking when i say my kindle was GLUED to my hands for the past 4 days. making food? reading. getting ready? reading. at work? you guessed it!! READING!!!! it was amazing and i am SO excited for book 3!!! thank you so much to courtney for the chance to read this book, this series has become one of my favorites 🫶

i have so many thoughts and so many questions which is one of my favorite feelings i get while reading. my mind is spinning with theories on what could happen next!!!

i was scared i wasn’t going to remember things that happened in the first book since i read it a year ago but that was NOT the case!!! as soon as i read the first page it felt like no time has passed at all!! i love courtney’s writing so much and seeing these characters on my page again made me so happy!!!!

this is genuinely the only book series where i wasn’t able to pick a team for the love triangle because i both love interests are SO GOOD that i am rooting for them both but at the same time switching teams every chapter… A LOVE TRIANGLE DONE RIGHT!!!! after finishing the book im definitely set on a team BUT while reading this i felt like i was being pulled by my arms every chapter between the love interests LMAO

speaking of characters… lets get into it 🙂‍↕️

━━━━━━━━━ ✦❘༻༺❘✦ ━━━━━━━━━

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 katerina

oh my gosh kat was so FIERCE in this book!!! i loved how confident she is in herself and i absolutely loved seeing her control and learn more of her powers!!! she is such a caring am loving character who also isn’t afraid to kick ass and stand up for what she believe is right!! i can’t wait to see her shine even more in book 3!!

“I’ll follow you wherever you go. And I’ll stand behind you in whichever decision you make.”

i absolutely loved reading more about daeja and kat’s bond!!! there were so many moments between them in this book and i loved every second!!! the banter is hilarious yet at the same time these two love each other so much and i love their loyalty and protectiveness of each other!! an amazing duo fr

━━━━━━━━━ ✦❘༻༺❘✦ ━━━━━━━━━

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 cole

i know a lot of people hated cole in book one but I NEVER DID!!!! i always liked cole as a character (what he did did annoy me but it was never hatred!!) and this book completely solidified me as a cole defender! COLE GET BEHIND ME!!!! i genuinely believe this man loves kat so much and has proved that time and time again! he groveled, apologized like a hundred times, and just loves so gently if that makes sense!!! he’s always been there for kat and is so protective!!

cole and kat have a lot of history and i feel like they will always love each other yet at the same time it kind of felt like this book was some sort of closure between them if that makes sense? BUT WE SHALL SEE IN BOOK 3 I COULD TOTALLY BE WRONG!!!

quotes

“I hated the rain before I met you. But as I got to know you…as I fell in love with you…I began to love it. No matter how much it hurt me when you were gone. Because this is what I could have of you. The color of your eyes when you wore gray. I could sit and remember our times together for hours and not be disturbed. It was the closest I could feel to you…even if you were gone.”

“My word means nothing if it’s not for you.”

“All I have left is blood and banes. Because every breath, beat, and part of what makes me, me, has already been given to you.”

“I do forgive you.”
“I know, love.”

━━━━━━━━━ ✦❘༻༺❘✦ ━━━━━━━━━

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 darian

oh my god this guy had me fuming at the start HE WAS SUCH AN ASSHOLE but like hot… anyways the banter between darian and kat at the start was so intense and murderous i was eating it up!!! i genuinely wanted to punch this guy in the face everytime he opened his mouth (AT THE START OF THE BOOK)

the whole close proximity thing they had going on had me giggling I ATE IT UP!!!! these two were at each others throats yet the sexual tension was THROUGH THE ROOF

“Since our time together is fleeting, perhaps you keep that off,”
“Do you ever stop talking?”
“Only if you’ll shut me up.”

and as much as they infuriate each other, deep down they both care for each other even if they won’t acknowledge or admit it!! the dragons breath, the training; they show it through their actions and i absolutely loved the development between them in this book!!

“I’ll hold my breath if it means stopping my heart to kiss you again”

one of my favorite things in this book was the close proximity situation between kay and darian in kat’s room hands down. not only was the banter so addicting and tension filled, kat and darian developed trust between each other, even if it was in the form of a simple key!! with everything going on during this book as well as every other characters opinions on darian, this felt very intimate between them and i absolutely loved it!!!

quotes

“And I’ve seen the way Darian watches you. Anyone can see his eyes follow you as a starved man would. How he has the audacity not to care that anyone notices is beyond me.”

“You constantly dart your gaze away, but it always goes back to him.”

“He flashes me a quick smile, something like pride in his expression.”

“That’s my girl,”

“Why did you come back?”
“Because I heard you.”

“And yet, I can’t fucking hate you. No matter how…fucking…hard…I try. You’ll destroy my life, and everything I’ve worked for, and…for some godsforsaken reason…I would let you—”

“Look at me, look at me! You can’t. You can’t do that—”
“Why? Why not? It would be the easiest way—”
“You don’t give up that easily! We don’t do easy!”

i’m on team darian btw if that isn’t obvious already 😛

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 ending thoughts

okay i have SO many questions and thoughts WHAT THE FUCK!!!! i honestly did not expect that to happen at the end and was completely clueless right up until that buildup and reveal i was like wait what if… AND THEN IT HAPPENED AND I WAS LIKE WHAT THE HELL!!!!! now looking back at it i can see all the hidden clues and WOW what a plot twist!!!! i am beyond excited for the third book and i will be sat patiently for the release!!! courtney truly outdid with this book oh my god it was amazing!!!!

Oh… that ending. That ending was so fucking good. I was loving, probably rocking a 4.25 the whole time & then that ending brought it up to 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ for me. Hell yes.

THANK YOU to the author for providing this ARC!

PLOT
Now in the Dragon Lands, Kat & her crew of Arterians are working with the rebels to figure out about the prophecy, magic, & how to kill the king. Darian has been outed as the prince & is kept under lock & key while Cole is working for forgiveness. This book has
- a proper love triangle
- expanding world with more dragons, magic, prophecies, gods, etc.
- training both of the sparring & magical varieties
- found family
- med spice levels

PROS
- I am such a fan of a proper love triangle & I truly feel like this delivers. The options have good & bad for each & ugh. It creates for the best longing & yearning. I just love it. & I love both options.
- Kat was mostly pretty damn smart this book. Not entirely (we can’t be perfect) but mostly & solved some pretty impressive puzzles.
- This book is an emotional rollercoaster from Kat. Homegirl is STRUGGLING. With her new role in the rebellion, her relationships with Cole & Darian, & you can just feel it. Is she perfect? Hell no. She literally fucks up constantly. But you ALWAYS understand her why. & like… I sort of can’t blame her for them.
- The spice in this SIZZLES. Oh. My. God. Courtney wrote tf out of the spice in this book jfc I am sweating. I was reading this on a plane & needed a fan & a breather. 😆
- That fucking ending. Hell yes. Omg I cannot WAIT for book 3 now.
- Daeja rules. Archie rules. The other dragons rule.
- I feel like she & Daeja were even stronger this book. Book 1 felt like a lot of Kat hiding her in the forest & then going along her merry way, but we got lots of Daeja this book & that was such a win.

MIDS
- So I love a world expanding in the 2nd book as much as the next fantasy babe but sometimes I felt like we were given SO much new stuff I was asking myself “did we set this up in book 1 or did we just explode here” — I’m not giving it a con because that could very much be a me-not-remembering thing. But it was something I pretty consistently thought about as we learned more & more. & like I said it could very much have been “well King Aaric blocked all this info & we’re now in the Dragon Lands so of course we’re learning this alongside Kat” but I just kept being like “well damn we got more again” 😆. Idk if this makes sense.

CONS
- One of the characters’ knowledge base/their lessons felt a little convenient at times. You learn why that is later in the book but even still, it gets the crew out of situations maybe a little too conveniently. There’s a lot of hidden knowledge/answers from said character that are only shared when danger is afoot & it just kind of felt like “well of course they know that & decided to share it *now*” so I tired of that a bit.

SO VERY VERY PUMPED for book 3!

- His consort?! This tension is going to be everything in book 3 omg.
- Cole’s reveal actually was SUUUCH a good twist! WOW I am obsessed. I was always like “his mom having this ring makes no sense” & now I see. Omg I REALLY love this switch up & am extremely pumped about it.
- BUT what does this mean about how Kat can use magic? Not necessarily the heir stuff Cole had but pulling, etc.?
- The “10 Things I Hate About You” speech was fucking EVERYTHING DARIAN.
- I think M is the traitor in the midst.

Before I go into this review I do want to point out that I actually liked the characters in this book! I think the authors writing is really solid and I am excited to read another series by this author in the future!

Now for this series specifically, I am a bit unsure how I feel because there are some things I really enjoyed (like the friendship with Archie and the little dragon communication) but I really struggled with the romance and even the plot in this one. The romance from both mmcs was lacking and I was really rooting for Darian at times but some of the scenes in here just felt cringe. The plot felt a bit all over the place and at times I felt like some of the twists were random.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad book or series at all, I just think it might not be for me! I still encourage you to try if you are looking for a fast paced Romantasy with dragons and a love triangle!

Genre: Romantacy
⭐️ 5/5
🌶 3/5 (🥵🥵🥵)
🧠 5/10 (Got a little bump for the complicated familial ties. Felt murder board worthy for a while there. lol)
Cliffhanger: 7/10 because 😍 iykyk
Noteworthy: Book 2 of an incomplete series. Book 3 has not been announced at this point. Single first-person POV. Available on KU.

This series is 2/2 with absolute bangers! The action, the mystery, the stakes, the spice, the tension, the twists.. ugh so good! I can't say much without spoiling things but we get a fair amount of answers in this one. But fear not, there are still plenty of mysteries to uncover by Scoob and the Gang. Also, just putting this out there. I'm a Darian truther and will accept zero slander towards my man's honor. I do like Cole a lot but come on! 😂

I am so depressed that the next book is not available for me to download right now. Once it's announced I shall be red x-ing a calendar.

(4.5/5–rounded up) I've said this a million times, but I LOVE IT when the second book in a series is even better than the first (which I also loved).

If you're looking for your next dragon romantasy obsession, then you should definitely start The Arterian series because I can't stop thinking about it.

📖 ARC Review 📖

What to expect:
♥️ fantasy romance
📢 1st person, single POV
🐉 a sassy dragon
😜 a Damon Salvatore-coded MMC
🔼 a well-done love triangle
🗡️ multiple training scenes
🌪️ a TWISTY plot

Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

⚠️ Read TW/CW

(Consensual) forehead kisses for Courtney for including a book 1 recap at the beginning. I love when authors do this, and I found it super helpful.

I went into this book fully hating one of our MMCs, so I was a bit concerned how this love triangle was going to continue to go. And, SOMEHOW, Courtney made me like him again?! I'm still fully on team shameless flirt, but I SEE you Mr. Broody & Yearning. That being said, I'll riot if she picks him.

As odd as this may sound, our FMC, Kat is relatably human in this book. She's not meant to be a perfect character, and those moments of imperfection give her room to grow into the character she is becoming (which I like). I especially appreciate her character development as well as Daeja and Darian in this book.

Even though I did feel a bit morally conflicted with some scenes between her and one of our MMCs (read the TW), I feel really good about where things ended up. There are two scenes in this book that hit me HARD between these two–and one of those scenes is SO 10 Things I Hate About You coded.

The plot of this book is very twisty, and it takes you on a crazy rollercoaster of emotions—I laughed, cried, cringed, screamed, and swooned. I love the lore and prophecies in this book, and I'm super excited to see how she continues to build this world.

The ending—Courtney is so messy, and I'm so here for it 😂 I can't wait to see how she concludes this trilogy!

A sincere thank you to Courtney for gifting me an eARC ahead of its release date.

Well well well, how do I even start this review? Of Blood & Banes is even better than book 1, Of Flames & Fallacies! When I say it's all gas from the start, I MEAN it!

The character development in this one is incredible, I thought OFAF had wonderful character complexity, but OBAB blew that out the water. The way Courtney's writing has grown from book 1 to book 2 is wonderful! I feel like we really got deeper into their histories and I'm obsessed. Along with the character development, the plot has THICKENED. The found family of this series is genuinely my favorite part! And yes, part of that found family definitely includes Kat's relationship with her dragon, Daeja. 🥹

We start off right where book 1 ended, and for spoiler purposes, I won't say where that is, but I WILL say, that the attention to detail is something I cherish about Courtney's writing! The way book 2 starts out? Absolutely hilarious, it couldn't have made me any happier!

I feel like I went through all the feels in this one, I mean, I cried for these characters, laughed with them, raged along side them, and gasped at every pearl clutching moment along the way! Also, the way the spice is weaved into it is *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼💋 This love triangle has me in a tizzy and I think I know who I want, but I fear it could always change with the way these men act!

I thought OFAF left me dangling off a cliff? Well let me introduce myself to the OBAB ending! I need book 3 like I need air to BREATHE!

I knew that ending was going to be brutal, but dang! Here I was thinking that maybe one of them would have to die to clear up the issue at hand, but I did not expect that!

This book had just as immaculate world building as the first, the twists just kept coming. Courtney is also an author that’s not afraid to kill off characters and it keeps me on the edge of my seat constantly wondering what’s coming next. The dragon lore, and the prophecies are one of my absolute favorite parts about this series. I love the tension between Darian and Katerina, as well as watching Katerina come into her own, her character growth has been phenomenal!

I will say the love triangle in this is messy, while we as the readers get a strong sense of who the end game is meant to be, watching the other character struggle you can’t help but have it pull at your heartstrings for him.

I absolutely adore Daeja, she is a fierce dragon, but also so witty and funny. Courtney set this book up in such a way that I already know book 3 is going to be absolutely phenomenal!

If you love books filled with prophecy’s, rebellion, high stake battles, tension, set in a world where you have no idea who you can trust then this series is absolutely for you!

Thank you so much to Courtney Whims for allowing me to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review

A 3 ⭐️ is lowkey generous. it may be a 2.5.

this book pissed me off. first of all, this love “triangle” is a random zig zag. kat bounces from longing about her love for cole to hoeing it out for darian with no shame. darian still doesn’t know about cole which i find unrealistic and kat is TERRIBLE for doing al this with darian while she “loves” cole. i don’t even want them together but cole would do anythinggggg for her. also, we don’t. even. like. darian. he barely has any redeemable traits after 2 full books. this hatred between them is too much and it flip flops every other chapter. i want to like him but i barely do. so the romance is pissing me off.

i thought marge’s death was unnecessary and overall found myself confused at the plot. there are too many holes that are supposed to be “filled in later” but in reality the book doesn’t make much sense. i was constantly complaining about it while reading and was lost in the sauce - even at descriptions of rooms and scenes still IN BOOK 2!

LASTLY, the ending. you’re telling me that COLE is the chosen one after we’ve cooked this story of kat & daeja for 2 books? i love a good plot twist but this is not it for me. how does this make sense? and WHY COLE? how can i root for darian when cole is a literal half dragon prophecy? i wish the plot twist involved darian bc what is the point of his character at this point. i understand these things will get solved for later but i feel this is a poor decision. and the arranged marriage…. please. no thx.

disappointed and wouldn’t rlly recommend these books at this point tbh

atleast 4.5 stars - THIS WAS SO DANG GOOD.
book 1 felt like a vibe read for me, it was super fun and enjoyable but upon finishing it, I felt like book two could easily be a let down and IT SURELY WAS NOT!!!

this book far surpassed book 1 and was a ride.
Courtney added so many layers and information and it was honestly hard to peel myself away from it.

we got more dragons and daeja in this book (thank g) and the love triangle was love trianging in the best way tbh. the banter was better. the stakes were better. the relationships were better... and the ending? I just KNOW I'll be eating book 3 up as soon as it's available.

MAKE SURE YOU READ OF FLAMES AND FALLACIES BEFORE SEPT 4th BECAUSE YOU WILL WANT TO HAVE THIS LOADED AND READY TO GO WHEN IT RELEASES!!!!!!

I AM DESTROYED. That ending??!! All the twists and turns?! Courtney went and out did herself with this one. I need book 3 ASAP.

Ok in all seriousness the review:
We pick up right where book 1 left off, and it was a bit of a slow start. But looking back now it was needed. We needed to build off of where book 1 left off and set up everything to come and I appreciate that Courtney took the time to do that.

Basically from 50% on my heart was racing and I absolutely needed to know what was going to happen next. There is so much tension and angst between the MC's, and yes it's a love triangle, but it is so well done and you love both the men (maybe one more than the other). The plot was rich, the side characters were everything, the prophecies and the twists that came from everything were mind blowing. Just when I thought I had something figured out, bam I was wrong. Oh and the spice... yea, it was spicing and I was so here for it.

I will honestly be thinking about this book daily until I have book 3 in my hands. I need to know what happens next. Courtney thank you so much for allowing me to ARC read this book, what an absolute honor.

I wanted to give this a higher rating to support a new author but I just couldn’t.

Let’s start with the good. I really do think the book & series has a good plot with good ideas, and for this reason I probably will read the third in the trilogy.

But the writing itself is not great. Language/dialogue felt clunky and unrealistic throughout that just had me rolling my eyes. The descriptions of scenes and surroundings felt very surface level, almost like following a formula of “I must use X number of descriptors for each item.” And the ending was… not great. A bit dull almost. Just introducing another very popular trope to set up book three that already feels annoying. This book came out very quickly after the first, and I think it would have benefitted from more time.

The character building also felt flat in this book. Katerina becomes all powerful immediately out of nowhere without much build up. People keep telling her how wonderful she is at everything but she really just keeps making the dumbest decisions. We see a bit more of Darian but never actually explore anything about him, he’s really just used as a prop for sex scenes, and he doesn’t seem to develop much from the first book. No one else seems to change much. And the love triangle feels so weird and forced. Two guys falling madly deeply in love with our Mary Sue main character but neither of them know about the other even though it’s presumably so obvious that others catch on and she is just sooo in love with one but then can’t stop herself from falling for the other and my lord, if I was either of these guys and found out, I’d be so pissed and feel so betrayed. It felt much more like her using them than the first book.

So overall, I think it suffered from being written and published so quickly after the first. Good ideas, but it was a struggle to get through.

I’m not gonna lie this wasn’t great. This book took me forever because I just wasn’t invested or excited about the story. I don’t understand her love-ish triangle. She keeps saying how much she loves Cole internally but then she’s fucking Darian every other chapter. Like miss girl pick a penis PLS.. yeah Cole hid his engagement and that was fucked up but I feel like he has been trying to make it right etc. he quite clearly only loves Kat. And then apparently COLE is the actual chosen one?? Idk the ending lost me and I can’t even remember who’s related to who and who tf Cyrus is in relation to everything haha. I also find it odd how devoted she is to Archie and calling him her best friend after knowing him for a matter of months. I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ Darian is superrr toxic but I love him I fear. Anyways…I will read the next book hoping for improvements. 🤞🏼😬🤞🏼

Oh My Good God.
Incredible doesn't even scratch the surface of how to describe this book.
the connections I formed with the characters with each and every page, the way I cheered on at times I probably shouldn't have, and that niggle of what if that sits there the whole time.

Courtney - this is amazing.
The only downside side? Now I have to find other things to read while I dream of Book 3

it was such a pleasure to be your ARC reader, antigen, any. time. you need something read, I'm over here!

I am so grateful I was chosen again as an ARC reader! This book was incredible!! First off I loved the recap in the beginning of the book! Such a great way to refresh the memory on what happened in the first book! This book was even better than the 1st and if you love dragons, romance, a love triangle, and twists/turns this is your next series!

I will say I enjoyed this book so much but the beginning was off to a very slow start and I was finding I had to force myself to read it. But once the action started to pick up I couldn't put this book down!

Book two of The Arterian series absolutely delivered, and I’m already desperate for more. This book took everything the first one built and cranked it up.

Katerina begins to step into her role in this one. She’s still the FMC we loved in the first book, but now she’s growing into the part she was always meant to fill. We see her face harder truths, make tougher choices, and embrace her power in ways that feel earned and impactful.

Then there's Daeja. Our baby dragon has grown into a whole teenage menace. She’s chaotic, hilarious, and powerful in ways that make you both cheer and worry. She's at the heart of this story, and watching her evolve alongside Kat has been a highlight.

Now let’s talk about that love triangle. It is so tense. Cole brings his protective energy and unwavering loyalty. He’s still the golden retriever with a warrior’s bite, the kind of man who always shows up when it counts. But Darian is a walking temptation. He oozes danger and magnetic tension, and even when you know he’s a risk, you can't help but want more of him. The chemistry here is off the charts and incredibly fun to read. It gets pretty dang hot!

We also get the return of some fan favorite side characters, and they’re not just decorative. They bring real heart, humor, and depth. Marge is still that lovable but stern mother figure who commands respect and warmth in equal measure. She leaves her mark on everyone she interacts with, and we finally get a glimpse into her backstory, which added even more weight to her presence. Archie, the loveable goofball, gets a bit of his own glow up. He’s still cracking jokes and stealing scenes with his charm, but there’s more grit to him this time. He’s finding his strength and coming into his own, and I loved watching that unfold.

The worldbuilding takes a big leap forward in this installment. We get more regions, more lore, and a deeper sense of how this magic system operates and evolves. One setting in particular had those ancient temple vibes, complete with curses and traps and high stakes. I was completely pulled in.

Pacing was spot on. Despite its length, it never felt slow. Every chapter pushed forward with momentum and purpose, keeping me hooked from beginning to end.

Courtney Whims has outdone herself. Bigger stakes. Sharper magic. Stronger character arcs. Hotter romance. This series just leveled up.

So grateful to have gotten to read this as an ARC, and it did not disappoint!

Had me guessing and excited at every single turn, the way that both the plot and romance were done in this book are so unique, and gripping I was thoroughly enjoying every single moment!

I’m so so so so excited for more in this series and more from this author in general! Absolutely recommend when it releases!!!

I just finished reading my arc copy and OH. MY. GOD.

Here's my spoiler-free review:

In "Of Flames & Fallacies" the story was restricted to the camp...but in this one the world expands so much. The places we visit, the things we learn about magic and dragons makes the story come to life.

I loved seeing all the characters again and witnessing all their growth through this big adventure. There was so much action, so much traveling and so much mystery. And of course the stakes remained high the entire time.

There were some very painful moments that brought actual tears to my eyes, but also many funny ones that made me laugh out loud.

Daeja....PROTECT HER AT ALL COSTS. She would literally do anything for Kat. Their bond is so precious 💖 Their scenes made my heart melt even more than in the previous book.

Love triangles aren't my thing but I kinda enjoy this one.

I won't say much about Cole. He's there. He's nice. Meh. I never felt any chemistry between him and Kat and my opinion remains the same till now. Ever since she met Darian, when I read about her relationship with Cole it feels like reading the extended epilogue of a relationship that has already ended.

Her scenes with Darian on the other hand were toxic as ever, but also very meaningful. And their dynamic 🔥🔥🔥 I was giggling in almost all their scenes, especially because they're both very cautious with each other. Their build-up was so painfully slow, realistic, and full of back & forths, but I enjoyed every hard-earned interaction. I love how I just read 556 pages and they still feel fresh. Their scenes aren't repetitive and I still feel like I haven't had enough of them.
As for the MMC himself...Darian might be an absolute asshole at first glance (...and second glance) but he had some growth in this book (small steps) and we have so much more to learn about him. I think book 3 will deliver more of his backstory and I'm here for it.

Even though I figured out the big plot twist of the book many chapters before it happened, it still felt so addicting waiting to see if I would end up being right. I was. It was so good!

However the ending still left me a little shocked with a smaller plot twist that felt like a prelude to book 3. (Darian girlies will probably love it)

I LOVED every minute of reading this book. I devoured it in two days and if I had book 3 in my hands I would binge the shit out of this story. 5⭐️

I lean forward, inches from his face as I grit out, “What does the King what?” “The same thing I do.” “And what’s that?” I hiss. “You,” he breathes, then leans forward despite the blade slicing into his skin and kisses me.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of “Of Blood and Blanes” the second book in the Arterian Series, the first book being “Of Flames and Fallacies.”

This book continues Kat’s journey trying to restore the dragon lands and escape the rule of a corrupt king. While also trying to balance a TORTUROUS love triangle.

This book was purely a vibes read. It was very fun. Very easy to read. We got more Darian lore and time which is something I wanted with the first book. We get to see some different sides of him which makes everything so much more complicated cause Cole is still there being a gold retriever for Kat. Kat needs to get her ish together. That is all I’m gonna say. Stop toying with hearts!

There are a few things I wish were done a little differently. I wish Kat spent more time reacting to certain situations and letting the reader know if something affects her. I want the trauma. I want her to be hurt by things. I’m messed up. But there are certain scenes I wish we got more of a reaction of her being hurt and affected by what is happening. She gets over things very fast and never mentions it again, and I just want to know what is going on in that head of hers more. Things are resolved a little too fast, let us sweat a little that maybe some relationships can’t be saved! I also still want to see under Darien’s mask, and we are getting there, and I have high hopes for book 3.

There are a lot of good moments though I adore Archie and Daeja… and Chapter 37… let me be your distraction… that is all.

I think it was a good second book, I just hope we get more moments to breathe and live in certain moments longer and finally get answers and solidifying the love… whoever it will be.

Courtney does it again! I love a good cliffhanger ending!! Totally thought I had more of the book left then I reached the acknowledgment page… 😂

First off A RECAP PAGE will win me over anytime! I did re-read OFAF before diving head first into this, and still absolutely loved the refresher in the way that it was done.

This book was a wild ride, my emotions were all over the place. I still absolutely love Daeja, she had matured so much still being so young, and she’s so quick with the insults. She will forever be my favourite.

The training scene with ____ 👀 🔥 holy hell that was probably my favourite part of the whole book 😂 I’m still on his team 1000%

We learned so much more about all the characters in OBAB, I feel like I saw a little more of each of their personalities and the found family was making itself known. I couldn’t get enough of it. The world building and pacing was exceptionally done. The politics were a bit heavier in this book but not overly complex and it was such a good time! I savoured this for as long as I could.

It was perfect. I wouldn’t change a damn thing about this!

Just finished my ARC read for Of Blood and Banes by Courtney Whims

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- It comes as no surprise for me to rate the second book of The Arterian Series as 5 stars! I’ve already taken advantage of the signed preorder sale for a shelf trophy!
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️- 4 Spicy peppers for me! Much more spice in the second book, the spice was spice-ing! It was toe-curling perfect and didn’t take away from the story at all! Lots of fun playful banter and one-liners.

Book two takes us on many adventures as Kat and her crew set to find answers they’re looking for in a prophecy. I felt like I was constantly on my toes not knowing what was about to happen next. There was so much more of dragons - which Daeja of course was both hilarious and badass! The love triangle was intense, I felt all the emotions. I know I’m going to flip over book 3… I’ve got to know what happens next!

Hi hi!! ARC reader here, so consider reading below at your own risk!

HOLY HELL. I blew through this book. I loved the first one and am always nervous for the continuation of books, but this one knocked it out of the park. OBAB is everything you look for in a fantasy novel—dragons, endearing FMCs, and a couple of nice lookin’ MMCs am I right…..
firstly—Darian. ohhhhh Darian. I love me a hot meanie man. him and Kat’s chemistry is off the charts in this book, I’m telling y’all!! I could not eat it up any faster. the ENDING was insane ARE YOU KIDDING ME. CONSORT?? WHAT!!! KAT ISNT THE CHOSEN ONE?? WHAT!!!! I will have to read it again once I get my physical copy in the mail, but my Lord this lived up to the hype. I need the third one pronto (lol but don’t worry ms. Courtney, I’ll wait patiently!!).

*insert aggressive string of profanity here*

Okay.

I THOUGHT book one was a roller coaster of feels and action—NO! I WAS WRONG!

I’m unwell. This book has me so messed up it’s not even funny and now I have to wait for book three 🫠😭

That being said, you would be missing out on the ride of a lifetime if you skipped out on this series.

Legitimately better than Fourth Wing—I said it.

Go add this one to your cart right now while I slide into Courtney’s DM’s to demand answers 🫡😘

So stoked I got to be an ARC reader for both the first and second books so far.

I really loved how right at the start there’s a quick summary of book one from Daeja and Kat. That was a 10/10 right there for me! As someone who reads a lot and tends to gravitate towards fantasy this was a total game changer for me and got me right back to where I left off with book one. I haven’t seen another book/author do that and really liked how unique it felt.

I liked the character building for all the main characters in this book. They all really took shape for me and I felt like I got a better understanding for some of characters and how they think as well as their relationships. I do, however; have to say……. Archie has my heart and he better stay alive!!!! Do not come for my boy.
Also hello Darian 🤪 it was nice to get to delve more into his character and why he reacts to people the way he does and how life has hardened him. But not going to lie…….. I was definitely here for those spicy chapters!!!! 🥵🥵🥵🥵

On another note, it was fun to see other dragons in this book and how they tie in with Daeja. I could read chapter of Daeja and Kat monologue and banter. Daeja’s quick wit and comeback’s are hilarious! I love how she’s really starting to come into her own and realize that yes she is indeed the big kid on the block.

Now…… that cliffhanger!!!!! The last 50 pages definitely had me in a chokehold and stressed out. Courtney knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. I need book 3 like yesterday because I NEED ANSWERS!

If you liked the first book you are going to LOVE this second book and be begging for more! So don’t wait and jump into this world and be consumed like the rest of us!

“Of Blood and Banes” by Courtney Whims

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

I have to say sequels can sometimes be hit or miss, but Courtney what you did was just… WOW!

I have now words to describe how amazing this books is, the book hangover is so real 🥲🫠

This is the perfect sequel, there was lot of new information… JAW DROPPING information but it wasn’t just pushed upon you, Courtney managed to feed us everything we needed to know to fill in gaps and still not overwhelm me!

Katerina and Daeja are such an iconic duo! And I might be biased but Kat and Darian kind of have my heart 👀🥵

Definitely need the sequel ASAP👀 because what was up with that ending again?? My heart can’t take this!!

This book was to die for, your writing and world building is exquisite, it hooked me the moment I read the first chapter.

Thank you for the privilege of reading an Advanced Reader Copy of Blood and Banes.

I now see what Courtney was building up too in book 1. This was a good 4 star until the last 15/10%, cause god damn??? I didn’t see any of the ending or plot coming. If you are considering this series, take this as your GO READ IT!
It has great world building, tension, rebellion, high stake war, dragons and a messy love triangle. What more can you ask for?

I want to keep this spoiler free, but I have some words for some characters!
Also, I’d die for Daeja.
This was an arc read, but this is my honest review.

I have mixed feelings about this sequel... i thoroughly enjoyed book one and I was super excited to read this book however, trilogies can be tough as the 2nd book is a bridge between the first and final book which often makes the second book feel like the story is being dragged out a bit.

I enjoyed the characters and i did enjoy the storyline - however the love triangle was a little meh as i wanted more decision and it felt a little messy. However, i thoroughly enjoyed the story and i definitely know who i am rooting for and cannot wait to see what the final book will bring!

I am so in love with this world! Daeja is one of my favorite characters and her dragon humor is on point. You get to see Katarina grow so much in this with her powers. I also love Archie her best friend, he can always make you smile. Marge would be the best grandparent to have! She is tough love all the way. And Darian he can be in my bed all the time. This was a lot of learning in this one but it was so fun with all the dragons. My heart broke and I had high blood pressure at moments. I highly recommend you pick this up! I can’t wait for the next one.
