On Holiday

Rate this book
A fallen pop star living off the grid in a tiny mountain cottage gets a second chance at love in this spicy, swoony, small town Rom Com.

She was America’s sweetheart. He was the boy next door.

Ben Holiday is content running his family’s fly-fishing business on Spirit Lake until Lucy Lark, the love he never got over, returns to his hometown. As if fate is giving them another shot, he can’t help but believe she’s still meant to be his. But their love ended years ago, with a broken heart (his) and a sunken boat (also his).

Lucy, once a dazzling star with sequins and a guitar, has left the spotlight for a quieter life in a cottage surrounded by rainbow Wellies, Silkie chickens, and a teacup pig—named Teacup. Desperate for a paycheck, she signs a deal to write a love song for a rising star, but she can’t even begin. Her inspiration is gone. The lyrics she once poured her heart into just won’t come.

Until Ben knocks on her door and offers a way for Lucy to rediscover a staycation where she can remain safe from the public eye. Family dinners, quiet nights in their small town while she hides from paparazzi under hats, and float trips down the river.

As they spend time together, Lucy and Ben begin to wonder if their love might not be sunk after all. But the real question will she follow her dreams alone, or will they make music together?

"On Holiday" is the third book in Margaret Rose's Love at the Lake series, a series which I have loved thus far. This is a famous singer x the boy next door romance where he falls first. They were childhood sweethearts, and she moved away without explanation to pursue her career because she always dreamed of something bigger than their sleepy, small mountain town. Now, she has come back home after a career fallout... and they might get their second chance at true love. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I found it to be a well-done, slow-burning second-chance romance with two interesting characters. It's super sweet. Ben was almost *too* sweet to the point where I thought Lucy was walking all over him for the first half of the book. Eventually, my mind changed, though. Though the romance is the central plot here, there is also an excellent exploration of finding confidence and believing in yourself and your ability. Lucy and Ben both help each other discover their true selves, what they really want, and their inner confidence. Watching Lucy become reinvigorated by her love of singing/playing music/writing music was excellent. Ben's undeniable love and want and yearning for Lucy and his family make him peak book boyfriend material. I will say, I wish the "fallout of her career" stuff involving Amy had been more serious. It felt a little silly to me in the grand scheme of things. It didn't detract from my All in all, this is a super sweet romance and a great addition to the Love At The Lake series.

Thank you to Margaret Rose and Luna Literary for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

this was cute! ☺️

it’s a super sweet small town, second chance love story. Ben Holiday is a cinnamon roll wrapped up with a bow and Lucy Lark is a strong woman who went to chase her dreams after high school.

they find their way back to each other in the most precious way. Ben and Lucy learn to choose themselves in new ways as they’ve grown apart and then back together again!

this is a perfect summer read, it’s very light on the spice but makes it easier to read while you’re at the beach or in a group setting 🙃

thank you so much to Margaret Rose and Luna Literary Management for this eARC! 💕

As I can confidently say now after reading the third book in the Love at the Lake series by Margaret Rose, this is another absolute banger and yet another one of her slow-burn romances that will live permanently in my mind alongside the thought “how frequently is it acceptable to reread this?” 💕

Everything about this book is perfection but let’s go through some highlights. Lucy’s character is dynamic and relatable af. Her struggles to be overtaken by her past and anxiety combined with the overly familiar millennial urge to hide away in a pink cottage in the middle of nowhere with a loyal teacup sized companion is spot on. Even though she has some moments written in that others may criticize as cringe, I think it exposes a very real character arc that brings this character off the page and into your own heart. Next up, the ultimate cinnamon roll, golden retriever boyfriend (ex bf… first love? All of the above technically). Ben is going straight to the book boyfriend hall of fame. Written with perfect precision, as this amazing female author does, he is written to be wildly thoughtful, fiercely loyal and unable to stop loving Lucy - even when he’s constantly told he should. Too many cute moments to count, but he absolutely lives up to the unbelievably high standard of book boyfriends currently in this series.

Here’s an additional list amazing features that should continue to persuade you to read this, I’ve I wasn’t already able to:
- an adorable crew of cuddly comfort farm animals (not just the teacup pig!)
- Taylor Swift references and vibes
- sizzling chemistry
- supportive friends & fam
- boy next door/ “it was always you”
- second chance romance
- secret sleepovers, romantic picnics and more swoon-worthy stolen moments

Thank you to Margaret Rose and Luna Literacy for an ARC of this book. Apologies for not being able to post earlier but despite life getting in the way, I loved this book so much I simply could not shout it from the rooftops!

Childhood love gets a second chance in On Holiday, by Margaret Rose. This is the third book in the Love at the Lake series. The hopeless romantic in me is always ready for a second chance romance, even more so when it is young love making a comeback. As our MCs navigate being reunited, getting to know each other all over again, and learning that real love is and isn’t as easy as when you are a kid, Margaret reminds her readers that your true love will always find you.

Lucy moved away from her small town in order to pursue her dreams of singing. She has never regretted that decision, as her dreams came true. Becoming a famous pop star was everything to her, until it wasn’t. When her career ends she comes home to find herself and figure out her next steps. When she runs into her old childhood love, they decide to be friends again. My heart went out to Lucy. It could not have been easy to realize your dream and then lose it. I did love how she found herself again and was reminded who she was outside of a singer. As she found herself again, she began to see what is really important.

Ben’s heart was broken when Lucy just upped and moved away. He supported her dreams, but he wanted to support them with her, not apart. When Lucy returns home he wants to still be there for her, but realizes he still loves her. As their friendship builds back up, he is so sweet to her. He helps her find herself again while reminding her who she is. But beyond that, Lucy helps Ben realize things about himself as well. Their rekindled romance brought out the best of both of them.

Margaret wrote such a sweet, romantic slow burn about two hearts finding each other again. The mutual pining that these two shared made their love easy to connect to and feel real. Ben’s family was a joy to get to know as well. Their constant support of both MCs was heartwarming. There is a touch of drama due to Lucy’s career falling out, but the romance is front and center in this story. The chemistry is undeniable, the love story swoony, and the characters amazing.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Lucy, America’s sweetheart is the sweetest girl ever. She loves her little pink cottage, her pets, her flowers, and secretly Ben too. She broke Ben’s heart once, and will never do it again. That’s why she has to stay away from him.
This second chance romance is everything you want– slow burn, sneaking glances, a MMC that would do anything for the girl, and a HEA. Ben is the guy who does everything and anything for his family and friends. He is also the guy that runs all of Lucy’s errands, because she needs to stay out of the public eye, and she’s kinda afraid to leave the house. But the paparazzi even make it to her home, and things get scary for her. Until, Ben comes in and takes care of it. He always seems to be around when she needs him. He encourages her, and even though it’s scary she finds herself taking chances, like leaving the house, and writing music again.
The time they take to get reacquainted with one another and develop the trust was my favorite part. He helped her recognize she still had the confidence in her to take risks in music career and to go for the love of her life.
I’ve read all the books in the series so far, and I have to say I love all the couples although Jon and Franny hold a special place in my heart. I also have to mention that Margaret’s description of the MMC’s is written in such a way, you will think it about long after you are done reading the book. For example. In Kissing Bandit, her description of Jon standing in the nightclub with his ball cap low, his white tight shirt, and jeans you can’t look away from, is still living in my head. Winter, in Royal Hearts at his Christmas party wearing leather pants sans a shirt with a fur coat – yep, that’s stuck in my mind too.
I can’t wait to go back this small town to find out what’s going on with Willow!

"I'm yours, Lucy Lark. I've always been yours. No Matter how far you ran from me. I kept you, right here." -Ben

Lucy & Ben. High school sweethearts who broke each other's heart. Her dreams to be a singer were bigger than a small town and his family needed him so he stayed. He built a mini empire while she was gone, owning multiple small businesses in the small town (this is not a rich guy romance). When she comes back to their small town, running from everything she ever wanted, Ben is there but Lucy still isn't ready to face him. The lengths this man went for her are unbelievable. I'm for sure not that good of a person! Lucy didn't know where to take her career and her dreams from here and slowly Ben helped her come out of her shell, letting her lead the way to find her way back to herself. Would she stay or leave Ben again? He took the chance and helped her even though his heart might crumble.

This is such a sweet story of second chance romance. The main characters are lovable, mostly relatable, and sweet. The burn here is sloooooow but it's good and it's so nice that they chose to take things slowly and to see that Ben, although falling all over himself for her, cared enough about himself to worry about his own heart being broken again.

The secondary characters (some we've seen in previous books) are such good friends - the guys aren't just willing to let it all go. They care about Ben so much. It makes the characters so much more real. There are also some cute animals that Lucy has adopted. This book moved pretty fast and I felt like some things could've been dug in a little more, but overall I really enjoyed this book and will continue with the series.

I received this book as an eARC and my review is voluntary. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Margaret Rose and Luna Literary Management for the opportunity!

[4 Stars😊] Margaret Rose delivers another cute yet heartfelt rom-com in On Holiday! I really enjoyed Ben and Lucy’s second-chance romance set in one of my favorite fictional small towns with some cameos from characters from Kissing Bandit and Royal Hearts.🥰 I thought that Margaret Rose balanced the past and present timelines well so it truly felt like a second-chance instead of a “picking up where we left off”. I got to sit in the discomfort, the awkwardness, and eventually the acceptance and forgiveness between Ben and Lucy, and it made the reading experience all the more enjoyable knowing they worked hard for their second chance instead of glossing over the past.

While I did enjoy this book, I felt like their relationship was one-sided at times because Ben was doing THE MOST for her even though they weren’t together and there was no reciprocity until the end. I think once she pushed outside her self-created bubble and she saw how her behavior was affecting him, things really picked up and got so much sweeter. The third act conflict was the perfect way to showcase their growth and maturity, and I love how Margaret Rose set the stage (see what I did there?😉) for Lucy’s decision.

One thing I really love about Margaret Rose’s books is her depiction of healthy male friendships, and On Holiday was no exception. I love how Ben’s friends were able to voice their concerns from a place of genuine love and care, and I loved how they also handled one friend being more vocally opposed to Ben’s decision to pursue Lucy and how they navigated their friendship when they didn’t see eye-to-eye.

Margaret Rose is very quickly becoming a must-read author for me for her charming stories, and I can’t wait to get my hands on her next release!

Thank you to Margaret Rose and Luna Literary for the ARC of On Holiday! This is the perfect summer read for anyone who enjoys a good second chance, small town romance. Ben Holiday and Lucy Lark were high school sweethearts until Lucy leaves their lakeside hometown to pursue a music career in the big city. Heartbroken, Ben stays in their hometown, taking over the family business, and starting some of his own. Years later, Lucy finds herself back in her hometown to escape the paparazzi. She buys a remote cottage at the edge of town, ready to have a quiet life away from the world. Her only contact? Ben Holiday, who leaves groceries at her doorstep, secretly helps her paint her house, and fixes the roof unbeknownst to her. Lucy doesn't want to leave her pink cottage because she is afraid of running into the paparazzi. When her money runs out, she has no choice but to take the offer from her old record label to help write songs for an up and coming singer. But how do you write new music if you're not truly living?

I love how Ben helps Lucy face her anxiety at leaving the house, and the lengths he went through to make sure she was comfortable. He's the boy next door who never got over his first love, and he really is so patient and kind with her. Despite being a pop star, we all know Lucy never got over Ben, either. You can see the sparks between them reigniting as they begin to make new memories - outdoor picnics, floating down the river, dinners together. There's pining, there's tension, and a couple of laugh out loud moments that make this book so relatable and believable. You root for them to rekindle their romance, and it's so great when they do. I loved watching Lucy gain her confidence to write again, and see her flourish. Once a creative, always a creative, even if we take a break. Overall, a great read I definitely recommend picking up!

Thank you to Luna Literary Management for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

A year ago, Lucy Lark was one of the most famous music stars in the world. After her reputation as a songwriter was publicly (and falsely) called into question, she bought a remote cottage near her hometown where she could disappear. The news cycle moved on, but Lucy's first love, Ben Holiday, never did. He's been picking up Lucy's mail and doing chores around her property, even though Lucy stays hidden inside her house. When money runs out and Lucy has to write songs for an up-and-coming artist, Ben is there to help break her writer's block and start living again. Lucy picked her big dreams over Ben when they were teens, and neither wants to get hurt again. But with so many years gone by, is it possible that what they were looking for was in front of them all along?

This was such a well-done second-chance romance. I could feel the pining spilling off the page. The burn is very slow, but very worth the wait! Ben is the sweetest, most selfless, hardworking MMC. I loved his patience with Lucy and how he cared so much for her, often without her even knowing. The small town vibes are immaculate, and I adore the idea of Lucy's pink cottage with a teacup pig and chickens. I would like to live there immediately. Despite the FMC being a former celebrity, the entire novel has a warm, cozy vibe that you'll want to stay in forever. This can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the two previous books in the Love at the Lake series so you get a full picture of the characters. This is the ideal book if you want a small-town, second-chance romance with the perfect amount of spice!

This is the first time I have read a book by Author: Margaret Rose. At first I was a l wondering if I was going to like it, it was slow moving. However after I got past that I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. It’s a very sweet, caring and not a spicy book.

Ben and Lucy were high school sweet hearts that went their own ways. She became a pop start and he stayed in his small town running his businesses. Flash forward some years and she is back in town hiding out because of a fall out she had with the record label. He’s her go to when she needs help, with picking up supples or helping her keep people off her land. Then one day he is sick of helping her hid out after she has been there for a year. He takes her into town and it opens up a whole new life for her again. He starts helping her come out of hiding and their feelings for each other grow stronger again every day they are together. They soon learn that they never stopped loving each other and it was “always you” for both of them.

She gets the chance to start writing music again and with his help, she comes up with the six songs that are needed. He is there when she needs him the most. When something happens and he needs to be with his family she is willing to drop everything to be there for him and her family. He tells her no, that he is going to be there for her on a very important day. This is a true love story, with a little bump in the road that will bring you all the feels and you hope has a happy ending! I would recommend this book if you like second chances, boy next door, pop star, and a little pig named teacup.

“You’ve got something important to do? More important than making your big comeback?”
Lucy: “I’ve already made my comeback”

Lucy: “it’s love, and a man, and family…”
Swoooooon

This story is so sweet and heartwarming. I loved every second. I find that some second chance romance books can be cheesy but not this one. Ben and Lucy were high school sweethearts until the music world took Lucy away to New York. She eventually runs away from the life of fame back to her charming small town. And I just loved how familiar and cozy the town felt for me as a reader.

What made this story work for me was how honestly it explored the challenges of reconnecting after a painful past. The characters don’t just fall back into old habits. There’s real tension and healing, which made their journey feel earned.

At times, I felt the relationship leaned too much on Ben’s efforts, while Lucy took longer to open up. But once her growth kicked in, their connection became more balanced and meaningful.

The third-act conflict was especially well done and showed how much both characters had matured. It wasn’t the regular “third act breakup” because it was just a good ole conflict and I also loved the way the author crested Ben’s friendships around the storyline. The dynamics felt real, supportive, and gave added depth to his character. It’s always refreshing to see healthy male friendships handled with care.

Overall, this was a heartfelt and engaging read. Margaret Rose continues to deliver romances that are both emotional and charming. I’m looking forward to whatever she writes next.

Thank you Margaret Rose for an ARC! 🫶🩷

Thank you, Margaret Rose, for letting me Beta and ARC read this; working with you is one of the best things ever!

On Holiday is another triumph by Margaret Rose. There is something truly so magical about the Love at the Lake series. The way Rose describes the atmosphere makes you feel like you're really there experiencing this town with the characters.

Lucy Lark is one of my favorite FMCs Rose has written. She's soft, and unsure but has this hunger about her that doesn't harden her but makes her all that much easier to root for. Seeing her win in the end was well deserved. Not only did she get her romantic HEA, but she got the HEA with herself, which I would argue is even more important.

Ben Holiday, my soul book boyfriend. His struggle with burnout, never being able to say no and seeing someone finally want to take care of him tugged at my cold, slacked heartstrings. I absolutely love and adore this man, and I love that there was never a moment he wanted to dull Lucy's sparkle.

These two together were so sweet, tender and exploratory. The way they knew they'd changed from when they were teens but still had that connection and chemistry. This was a perfect example of a GOOD second-chance romance.

I cannot wait to see what happens in the next one, as all of these characters mean so much to me and they all deserve to be happy !!!

On Holiday, the third installment in the Love at the Lake series, follows Lucy and Ben, ex-high school sweethearts. Lucy left their small town to follow her dreams of being a musician, and is now hiding out in a cottage after a public falling out with her manager. Ben is determined to coax Lucy back out and help her find inspiration to start writing music again.

These two were so sweet! They both clearly adore the other but don’t want to get hurt again. Ben especially is book-boyfriend material the way he provides for Lucy and his family. The romance had great pacing and I was giggling when Lucy and Ben finally acted on their feelings!

I’ve enjoyed this series so far and can’t wait to see what comes next! Each character is fully developed and has a great story to follow along with. I will be seated for the next book!

I’m yours Lucy Lark. I’ve always been yours. No mater how far you ran from me. I kept you right here.”

On Holiday is such an amazingly heart warming book and I absolutely read it in one sitting. uhggg it was so good I didn’t want it to end!
Ben is just so freaking amazing. He’s mine now. I claim him. Lucy can pound sand.😁
The way he takes care of Lucy is so irresistible…total swoon 😏 I mean he brought her a pig when she was all alone!Everything he does for her even though she won’t let him see her is just hero worthy. Did I forget to say I love him 😂
Oh Lucy she made my heart hurt for her. She’s rightfully broken after a horrendous experience in the music industry. She decides to move back to her home town. She REFUSES to leave her little pink house or let anyone see her in person!
Their happily ever after does happen after lots of support for each other.

I just LOVE THIS BOOK!! The friend group is pretty freakin amazing too!!

This is a perfect, short read for the summer! I actually finished this book in a day because it was just so so fun and beautiful and just overall amazing. Lucy and Ben had such fun and amazing chemistry and you could instantly tell that there was an old flame there that they both wanted to be rekindled. I also love how Ben never gave up on Lucy, despite how stubborn she was. It was also nice to see how Lucy and Ben were both able to reflect on how they used to be and improve on not only their relationship, but themselves as individuals. Overall, this was such a fun and quick read that is low on spice and perfect for the summer!

Yes Yes Yes to this book.

On Holiday takes place around the Tahoe area which was already a win for me. *There are not enough books taking place in that area in my opinion.*

Lucy is America's sweetheart, who (depending on who you ask) has fallen out of grace and is now hiding out back in her hometown. Ben was her first love who now is still doing what he can to protect her and help her, all while caring for his family and owning a good portion of the town.

As Ben starts to bring Lucy out of her funk (hey she needs that money), they realize that they want more than what they started with and the old flame starts burning.

With fun characters (teacup the pig) and a story full of love (including self love and family love), you can't help but fall in love with On Holiday.

Such a cute read!!

I loved Lucy Larks transformation from being a recluse, guarded, and scorned person to gaining back her confidence. And I can’t forget about the second chance romance aspect with her first love, Ben Holiday.

Let me just say, Ben Holiday is such a cinnamon roll. He’s always patient and sweet with Lucy and I love the friendship and history that he has with her. I also adored his friendship with his other friends. The dynamic was so charming and I also enjoyed the fact that they weren’t completely on board with getting involved with Lucy, it made the characters feel more real and genuine.

I would HIGHLY recommend reading this novel, you won’t regret it ♥️

Margaret Rose is the queen of rom com books and with this one… she’s done it again! I fell in love with the whole crew of characters in Kissing Bandit but this might be my favorite in the series!! It was fun, swoony, and downright delectable in every way! If you want to laugh, fall in love with Ben Holiday (I think I need a tick check!), and wish you were Lucy Lark (can I have a pink guitar?)… don’t miss this one!

Teacup gets her own honorable mention as the most perfect on page pet of all time!!

Ben is Lucy’s first love who still does his part to protect and help her, all while caring for his family. I love that Ben helped Lucy get out of her funk! While getting her out of her funk they realize that they want more than what they started with!

Feel good read especially for the summertime!

High school sweethearts

Ben is a cinnamon roll and all about Lucy

Lucy has lost herself, self confidence and inspiration for her song writing career.

Furry critters everywhere….can we say Teacup

Story unfolds from not knowing each other anymore to why they were good together, especially now that they are older.

Ben ultimate boyfriend. He helps her hide in the small town and each help each other find themselves.

Truly a mushy, lovable read.

Taylor Swift, country girl vibes from a small town, second chance romance, cute animal characters, and swoony moments! Say less!

This book had it all. The romance was so sweet and gentle, that I loved it. It had the pining and tension that was perfect for second chance. And I adored how much Ben adored Lucy so so much and how he lives his whole life for her, basically. It’s endearing and cute and makes for such a heartfelt story.

As for Lucy I love her! She’s quirky and cute and fun. But afraid of her future and I loved watching her grow in herself and in her world and in love, again. Watching her blossom right in front of us was so adorable and inspiring to witness. And I loved her towards the end the most when she really opened up and sang her heart out! Figuratively and literally.

If you like books with vibes, happiness, second chance romance, fun side characters, strong character development, and country music…then this is the book for you!

This was such a sweet and heartwarming story. I’ve always been a sucker for a second chance at love, and the “it was always you” trope gets me every time. The charming small-town setting was so vividly described—I’d absolutely make a stop at Patty’s for some pastries! Ben and Lucy’s relationship was beautifully done; their connection felt so real, and I found myself rooting for them the whole way through.

ARC Review

Absolutely adored this!! Small town, second chance, musician romance, and a teacup pig named Teacup?? Stole my heart. Lucy and Ben were so sweet, they definitely had me kicking my feet and squealing. I loved seeing the two of them bring out the best in each other. Totally swoonworthy, such a lighthearted and touching story.

Thank you Margaret Rose and Luna Literary for the ARC opportunity and for sharing Lucy and Ben’s story!

Overall: 4/5

I. Love. Ben. Holiday. He is the golden retrievierest golden retriever that ever golden retrievieres. And as a girl who is typically obsessed with the angry grump (Logan, I’m looking at you) I could not be more obsessed with this acts of service king! I also appreciate that Margaret gave me someone to hate because Amy made my blood BOIL! This book gave me all of the emotions I wanted, I squealed, I kicked my feet, I cried, I growled, I swooned! Margaret out did herself with this one!

I’ve really adored these sweet cozy summer reads lately. They’ve been a refreshing departure from everyday life. I always love the crossover of other characters from the same series. It feels like catching up with old friends. On Holiday was such a good reminder that no matter how far removed you’ve either physically or mentally been from yourself, there’s always hope that you’ll comeback better than ever before.

Arc Review!

3.5 ⭐ Rounded up

Lucy Lark is a famous country pop star who comes back to her small town after a fall out with her manager. Ben is her high school sweetheart, whom she left behind to pursue her career.

This story was super sweet! I adored Ben! The chemistry between these two was palpable. I really loved the romance but I also loved Lucy's journey with self confidence.

Super cute summer read!
