I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. I wasn't sure what to make of this book, but it aroused my curiosity and as a short prologue I decided it was worth a try - and I was glad I did. Essentially, the principle character is a young man living and studying in Boston, USA who is recruited into a programme to earn extra money, not realising he was being used, in his capacity of part time DJ and technology wiz, to "recruit" - make that capture - young people with no family or close friends to be used in mind control experiments, using certain frequencies in his music. Sickened by what he realised he was doing, he soon realised he could trust no one - and couldn't protect anyone. Looking around and thinking about how entangled our world is today - not only music but social media, advertising, games on phones and computers - it is easy to imagine how easily this fictional story could become reality. And that is very scary. The author has started a story here that is compelling and I, for one reader, am sufficiently taken by this story idea to want to read more!
Amy Quick Parrish's Recruited serves as a gripping prequel to The Frequency – False Flag, delving into the backstory of MIT student and underground DJ Raimi. When Raimi is approached by a clandestine organization masquerading as the NSA, he believes he's entering the realm of elite cybersecurity. However, he soon finds himself entangled in a harrowing experiment that uses music to manipulate minds. The novel excels in its fast-paced narrative and suspenseful plot, effectively capturing the reader's attention. However, the book's brevity, leaves certain aspects underdeveloped. Some characters and plot points could benefit from further exploration.
This is a very readable book It flows nicely and keeps you in suspense. A minimal cast of memorable characters. I especially liked the ending-they won the battle but not the war Raimi now has a purpose. I enjoyed reading this book and heartily recommend it..
