This book offers a pretty good technical explanation for the top-down biological approach to evolution as understood by Denis Noble, in opposition to Neo-Darwinists such as Richard Dawkins. The authors thoroughly offer a deconstruction of Dawkins’ arguments from both a definition-wise and systemic approach, creating significant doubt within me towards the mainstream understanding of evolution (which is especially alarming considering how widespread it is taught in schools in the US!). In particular, my biggest takeaway from the book was the misleading notion of the “central dogma” that is taken for granted in biology classrooms throughout academic centers in the United States. Greater attention needs to come on this matter, especially since there are massive philosophical implications that rise from challenging this “dogma”. The social impacts that could potentially stem from a philosophical shift are numerous, so I do hope something is done.

I enjoyed the technical language and explanations that the authors gave in this book, as they demonstrated biological expertise that was able to substantiate their claims, although I will note that they very clearly expressed their dislike of Dawkins with seemingly passive aggressive remarks. An interesting choice for sure!
