Tom Watts offers an engaging and intense take on the zombie genre in his novel *All Dead Men*. Through precise writing, well-maintained suspense, and a cast of complex characters, Watts skilfully combines a familiar horror storyline with wonderful emotional depth, examining the essence of humanity amidst widespread devastation.
Spoilers ahead.
A good zombie novel often uses an alternative term for 'Zombies' like 'Walkers', 'Rotters', or simply 'The Dead' to avoid the cliché. ‘All Dead Men’ by Watts follows this tradition with 'the infected', featuring various mutations. One mutation strays from the classic zombie trope. While they are decaying corpses driven by hunger, they are definitely not mindless and are driven by complex emotion. Watts introduces terrifyingly intelligent and emotional undead, making human survival appear bleak.
The book’s fast pace and short chapters create a cinematic feel, akin to a screenplay. Watts skilfully directs the reader's focus like a film director. I look forward to more of Tom’s work.

With sharp writing, tense pacing, and a cast of flawed but compelling characters, this novel pulls readers deep into a world where survival is anything but guaranteed. Watts blends horror with emotional depth, exploring what it really means to stay human when everything around you is falling apart. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic stories with bite—literally and figuratively—this one's for you.
