***Coach's Daughter, Second Chance, Steamy Hockey Romance*** Cammy Wrenley's Book
Jon Paul Dumont is everything I was warned about in this league—talented, entitled, and fully aware of both.
The NHL's favorite bad boy has left a trail of broken hearts from Montreal to San Diego, and a year ago, I was stupid enough to become one of them.
Now he's signed with my father's team, the Seattle Hawkeyes, attempting a comeback after a career-threatening injury and a DUI charge that got him dropped from the Blue Devils. As the GM's assistant, I've spent four years building my reputation as more than just Coach Wrenley's daughter.
I'd like to pretend that my past hasn't just skated back into my life in a Hawkeyes jersey, but the universe has other plans. Now we're paired together on the team's biggest charity event of the year, and suddenly I'm forced to confront not only JP, but all the reasons I fell for him in the first place—his perfect smile, his infuriating habit of speaking French when he knows I don't understand, and the way he brings me coffee just the way I like it.
He claims there's more to the story of why he disappeared that night, and the way he looks at me makes me want to believe him, but I learned the hard way that players like JP Dumont don't change.
When he challenges me to a bet—three shots on goal for the chance to prove he's not the player everyone thinks he is—I know I should walk away. But with the whole team watching, my pride on the line, and my heart refusing to listen to reason, I realize I'm in danger of making the same mistake twice.
Because this time, JP Dumont isn't just playing for keeps—he's playing for me.
***The Rookie Hawkeyes Series is a spin-off series from the original: The Hawkeyes Hockey Series. Each book in this series is a standalone: Each MMC and FMC gets their HEA at the end of each book. *** You do not have to read The Hawkeyes Hockey Series before starting the Rookie Hawkeyes Series.
As an avid reader myself, and a Westcoast girl, I love two things: swoon-worthy pro athlete book boyfriends, and writing stories about them living in the beautiful Northwest where I'm blessed to call home.
I do my best work late at night after I’ve tucked in my three littles, and my hard-working husband.
This was really cute at the start. JP literally puts his future on the line to show Cammy, the girl who got away, how much he wants her. He has rearranged his life and his career to get her to see he's serious. The man is a damn puppy dog for her! His obsession had me on his side right away!
However, if communication throws you off, this may not be for you. I actually was really anxious at times because I just needed JP to open up his damn mouth and tell Cammy what's up. But if he did, the story would be over. It just took a lot of the joy out of the book for me when Cammy jumped to conclusions after conclusion and JP couldn't just clear it up.
I did like his grovel and how he showed his commitment and I do understand why she would take some convincing initially. I also liked the secondary characters and if you have read other books by Kenna King, you may be in for some fun cameos. But this does work on it's own.
Overall, This was a quick, easy listen. It was narrated by Alex Kydd and Maeve York. They did a wonderful job.
3.5 Stars 2.5 on the spice scale
*Thank you to Must Love Audio, Page & Vine, and the author for early copies of this book.*
Two of my favorite tropes—hockey and second chance romance—wrapped up into one steamy, heartfelt read. Match Penalty had me hooked from the first chapter, and I devoured it in less than 24 hours without a single regret.
The pacing was absolute perfection, the spice was definitely there (yes, there’s Zamboni action), and the found family dynamic tied everything together beautifully. JP is the ultimate bad boy with a soft spot for Cammy, and I loved watching their relationship rekindle and slowly bloom again.
This was my first book by Kenna King, but it won’t be my last. If you’re into sports romance with heart, heat, and a little bit of chaos, this one’s for you.
Thank you so so much Chasing Books Pr and Kenna for the ARC!! This book was so much fun and unlocked a new trope for me. I loved the twist on a work place romance by making it coach’s daughter 😏 I really enjoyed how the angst lasted from the beginning to end, leaving me not knowing which way the story was going to go. Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed with how much sports information is included in a sports romance, but this one had the perfect balance of sports terminology and romance and plot.
It's been a long time I haven't read a good hockey romance book.
This one scratched that itch perfectly.
In brief, she's the daughter of a hockey legend. Works her way through to become assistant manager of the hockey team where her dad works as a goalie coach. The MMC sees her at one of the games where her team was playing his. He's immediately smitten and starts throwing her pucks with the word dinner? on them everytime she is at one of his games. For three years he changes his manwhorish ways, remains celibate and keeps pursuing her until finally she succumbs, gives him a chance, sleep together but she wakes up to an empty bed and the news that he was in an accident under DUI with another woman in his car. He breaks her heart and for a year and a half he's recovering from his injuries, desperately trying to get her forgiveness without explaining what happened with him that night. She blocks him. He gets kicked out of his team. Upon recovering from his injuries, the team she works for offers him a spot and he sets on a quest to win back his career, his reputation and her.
The book is sweet, well written, angsty, and just right.
What happened on the dreadful night was a bit fickle for the author to use as reason of their separation.
Also, the third act breakup made no sense. The MMC was easily persuaded that he is the villain of his story and needs to protect her by staying away from her. He didn't fight it, he merely broke it off.
But all in all, I enjoyed reading this book. I read 60% in one sitting for I couldn't put it down.
📝 ticking another Bingo square 13) "A book with a meet cute" Squares Count: 63
There were definitely cute moments in between but not enough to make up for the struggle I had to keep reading this book. I think the writing on the puck was really cute and that he was really adamant on the first half of the book to get her back. It was just went downhill from there.
If you weren't already frustrated on the lack of communication, well guess what, they break up because of another problem that could've been easily solved by communication.
**Spoiler** I genuinely do not understand why he couldn't have atleast gave some hints about what actually happen. Like sure its not your secret to share but you can atleast reassure her that you weren't cheating on her with your girl best friend. SMH The way the FMC has two occasions where she is rightfully able to assume cheating since none of them clear it up right away like girl. I could not handle that. Also the FMC's dad is too much.
i have so many complaints for this one. this book is so superficial and unbearable. first of all, there are so many side characters in this book and they aren’t even explained well enough to where i understand all the interconnections. second of all, how old is seven for him to be making stupid bets as her dad, and brynn for her to be hanging out with cammy like that as her stepmom, all with a toddler at home?? third of all, for this to be a second chance, there is absolutely ZERO grovelling, FLASHBACKS, tension, and banter. fourth of all, angelica is so damn annoying!!!! why WHY did she answer the phone while he was in the shower, knowing it was cammy calling, KNOWING they are having problems, and she would make it worse? so so dumb. god, i am fuming.
3.75⭐️ These two were so adorable together! They had undeniable chemistry, really good banter and their constant mutual pining made for great angst. And let me tell you, I am a sucker for all these things.
From the first moment they laid eyes on each other, JP and Cammy felt a magnetic pull towards each other. JP pursued her relentlessly and without shame for a long time, until she finally succumbed to his charm and playfull nature, spending an amazing night together. The next morning however, she woke up alone and confused, only for her to later find out that he has been in a car accident with another female on board. Coming to the wrong conclusions, Cammy feels betrayed, cuts all ties to him and moves on with her life. Fast forward to the present, as soon as JP recovered from his knee injury, he transfers to the team where Cammy is currently employed as the assistant manager and tries to win her back…and the story goes on from there..
So yeah, I loved their push and pull and their mutual pining, however:
- The miscommunication dragged on for too long and the reveal of what actually happened that morning wasn’t as „meaningful“ (for lack of a better word) as I would have liked. He could have easily explained everything to her without having to waste 1.5 years.
- The third act breakup got on my nerves. He fought so hard to win her back, only to break things off with her again because „her dad said so“. Like..what? 🫠 And I don’t understand why nobody said anything about her dad trying to break them apart and more or less forcing JP to „give her up because she deserves better“. Like why wasn’t that even acknowledged by Cammy? Why did the author just brushed over that part?
- Cammy and JP‘s past and their complicated relationship witht their respective families should have been explored in more depth. It all felt very surface level, like the author couldn’t be bothered to go into more detail.
Overall, a very cute second chance story with lots of angst and yearning. I just wish some parts would have been executed better.
And then I pull the comforter up over her shoulders and pull back the hair that’s fallen into her face. "Thank you," she murmurs, half-asleep. "You're not so bad sometimes." I smile, brushing hair from her face. "Get some rest. I'll be on the couch if you need anything." “Why'd you have to go and screw it all up?" she murmurs, her words slurred but filled with raw emotion. "I thought... I thought you were different.” My heart clenches. This mess is of my own doing. I should be sliding into bed next to her. Holding her against me and kissing her goodnight. "I'll earn it back. I promise,” I say, pulling my comforter higher up over her shoulder. "However long it takes." She's asleep before I finish speaking, but I mean every word. I'll spend the rest of my life making up for that night in San Diego if she’ll let me. Because Cammy Wrenley is my end game. ________________________________________
He groans against my lips at the friction. “You have no idea what you do to me, or what I would give to be close to you. Every time I see you, it’s all I can do to not pull you into the nearest corner just to feel you close—just to steal a minute with you. Just to get your beautiful hazel eyes on me for just a second. My world calms when you're near.”
I was ready to sink into a mindless, smutty hockey book after a long day of brain melting work, but this just wasn’t it. I don’t want to pick it up again on accident so I’m throwing it on the dnf list with this note so I can avoid in the future.
Thank you to Chasing Books PR and Kenna King for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Match Penalty is a super cute, short and sweet hockey romance story. This one features tropes like second chance romance, he falls first, changed bad boy, workplace romance, and forced proximity.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and am interested in reading more of Kenna King’s books in the future! I was really invested in the story during the first half - JP’s pining after Cammy was swoony and entertaining! Their chemistry together was undeniable. I really enjoyed the MCs dynamic and the building tension! The second half did unfortunately fall off for me. I found it a bit repetitive at times and the miscommunication dragged on for too long. Nonetheless, I still had fun reading this story. The characters Kenna developed because they were great together and had me smiling to myself during their interactions!
obsessed goalie who threw her pucks with little messages written on them to get her attention for 3 years, anyone??? going once, going twice. This was SO much fun! ✅️ second chance romance ✅️ absolute simp 'there's no one else but you' ✅️ reformed player ✅️ goalie x coach's daughter ✅️ HE SPEAKS FRENCH 🦋🦋🦋 the dirty talk & spicy scenes were DELICIOUS ✅️ nicknames in his language that she doesn't understand 😩 ✅️ series where each book follows a couple ✅️short chapters
I loved everything about this and ate it up!!! I can't wait to read the others. The only issue was the random insertion of this AI GENERATED art of the couple. Ms. King, who asked for this??? that threw me way off and honestly prevented me from rating this higher.
I’m new to Kenna King’s books, but boy did I enjoy this second chance romance. Since this is the first book I’ve ever read by Kenna, I know I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous ones, but I’m going to catch up. I’m invested in finding out what happened in the other couples’ lives. And because of this it was a bit difficult for me to get into it at first.
It didn’t take long though to fall in love with Cammy and JP. JP is back after one and a half year away from the game after an accident that cost him an injury, the team he was currently with, and most of all it cost him Cammy. He’s hell bent on getting her back, even though he is his own worst enemy when it’s a matter of doing things that are good for him. He always puts other people’s best interests first and his come last.
Cammy is still extremely hurt by what had happened with JP during their one night together. She doesn’t want to get closer to him again, but his pull is too strong too resist. Will she be able to overcome her fears and doubts?
Thank you Chasing Books PR and author Kenna King for the opportunity to read this wonderful steamy, second chance romance. All opinions are my own.
ARC REVIEW: Thank you, Chasing Books PR, for the advanced copy!
→ Initial Thoughts Match Penalty was such a fun surprise! I went into it not having read the original Legacy series, so I’ll admit there were moments where I felt a little lost. That said, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the story and the characters—plus, it kind of made me want to go back and binge the originals.
→ Characters Jon Paul (JP) really won me over. He starts off as your classic charming, cocky athlete, but his growth was one of the best parts of the book. Watching him become more self-aware and emotionally open was honestly such a highlight. And Cammy? She was so well-written. I loved how her reaction to their one night stand wasn’t over the top but still completely justified. She had real reasons to be upset, and her boundaries made total sense. Even though I’m still not totally sure why she gave JP another chance, somehow it worked—and I was rooting for them both.
→ Romance Their chemistry was really fun to watch unfold. The slow burn made their relationship feel earned and real, and I appreciated that the emotional connection developed alongside the physical attraction. JP’s charm definitely got to both Cammy and me 😅
→ Plot & Pacing For the most part, the pacing was spot-on. It moved quickly without feeling rushed, and I was never bored. My one major gripe? The third-act breakup. I usually hate those, and this one felt especially unnecessary. It didn’t add much to the story and honestly just made me mad. Still, it didn’t ruin the book—just dimmed the glow for a bit.
→ Vibes & Side Characters The found family energy was strong in this one, and I LOVED it. The group dynamics were cozy and supportive without being cheesy. Also, Cammy’s relationship with her stepmom was such a refreshing surprise—it gave bestie vibes in the best way and showed how great a chosen family can be.
→ Final Thoughts Match Penalty was a swoony, feel-good sports romance that had charm, heart, and just the right amount of emotional depth. If you’re into slow burn hockey romances with lovable characters and strong friendships, this one’s definitely worth checking out!
Tropes: → Second Chance → Coach's Daughter → Intense Pining → Boy Obsessed → Forced Proximity → Workplace Romance
When I signed up to read this ARC, I didn’t realize this series is a spin-off of a previous series. While it is the first book in the new series, many characters and their storylines from the previous books play a part throughout this story. I’m not sure if I had known that ahead of time, I still would have read this book, but it was a nice introduction to the author so I’m glad I did. Her writing style fits what I typically enjoy. I just think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the previous series and had more backstory on the characters.
Let’s get down to business and air the dirty laundry right upfront. A controversial trope is a huge player in this storyline. If you dislike miscommunication, this is probably not the right book for you. However, if that trope doesn’t bother you, this is a sweet second chance romance with a swoony, reformed playboy hockey player and a headstrong FMC.
Throughout the story, it was absolutely undeniable the connection these two shared. I adored how JP put Cammy front and center as his main priority. He was so determined to win her back and prove his love. This man had me swooning hard for him, especially when he was wooing her with French sweet nothings. Also, can we talk about the Zamboni scene? HAVE MERCY! 🥵 There’s nothing better than a HOT, steamy hockey romance!
While I do think the miscommunication drug on longer than preferred, causing an abundance of repetition, I did really enjoy this author’s writing and storytelling. The depth of the characters she creates sets her apart in the sports romance world. I’d love to read more of her work!
Thank you to Page & Vine, Luv Books Club, and Kenna King for the #gifted copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book put me back in my hockey romance era. A second chance romance where he fell first and so hard and will do ANYTHING to get her back. In some ways this reminds me of Consider Me by Becka Mack which is another top favorite of mine. It’s so easy to read, easy to root for them. I can’t wait to read more of the series! There’s also a series before this that seems like the generation before them and I didn’t read that and had no issues starting here!
Read this if you’re in the mood for… - hockey romance - second chance romance - banter - he falls first - dual pov - HEA
This was SO SWEET. It feels like a classic hockey romance and I enjoyed every moment of it. There’s great introductions to the other teammates and her friend group and I can’t wait to see who the focus is on next.
Here are a few of my favorite things… - tossing a puck every time? I love it. The callbacks to those moments are so good and how it all ties together in the end had me so emotional - the team knew he needed some support to make him look good lol so funny
Match Penalty was promising, I was enjoying it. The tension, the second chance aspect. Despite the fact that the reason behind JP's mysterious night was kept from the reader and the inkling I had that the reason would be flimsy. I was still enjoying it. Then the conflict arose and I rolled my eyes. Then there was a cringey line by Cammy. And this Angelica knew she was causing all this turmoil and was not behaving in a way that relayed that she wanted to mitigate any of it, despite the fact that she was a close friend of JP's. Also, most people know a little French and most people know what je t'aime means and if a man continues to speak French to you, how are you not gonna learn some key phrases so you might know what he's saying??? That part of Cammy's character was incredibly infuriating for me.
JP's actions and the cliché "I'll sacrifice myself to keep others safe" conflict was frustrating.
I could have loved it but by the end of the book, it was just ok.
More 4 1/2 🌟 There is nothing better than a second chance hockey romance and Match Penalty didn’t disappoint. This is the first book in the Rookie Hawkeyes series featuring Cammy and JP. This was a steamy heartwarming read as we learn the truth to what happened after their first encounter. I adored reading their journey as they rekindle their relationship. I really enjoyed this one! I received a complementary copy from Chasing Books PR.
4⭐️ I absolutely loved the original Hawkeyes Hockey Series and was so excited to dive into this spin-off. JP Dumont is exactly the kind of complicated, bad-boy hockey player you love to hate—and then love again. The mix of past drama, the charity event, and JP’s French-speaking charm made for some seriously swoony moments. I loved how the story explored his deeper side while still keeping the fun, sporty vibe. Definitely can’t wait to keep reading this series!
Huge thanks to Kenna King and Chasing Books PR for the ARC!
This was a decent hockey rom. I liked the second-chance angst. But, IDK, I just wanted more.
I'm super disappointed that no one called out her dad for how absolutely SHITTY it was for him to force JP's hand and make him break up with her again. Just... zero consequences? At all??? Fuck off, dad. Not even his wife, Cammy's friend, called him out. HOW IS THAT JUST TOTALLY GLOSSED OVER???
The spicy scenes were good. Not a fan that the last one was pre-breakup. Especially because it was the worst one. (Dude is already late for the press, but ok lets go have sex. I know I'm trying to prove to your dad and the team that I'm taking this job seriously, but na, it's fine. We totally have time for a relaxed-not-even-frantically-rushed-quickie. Really?) Soooo -1000 points for not having a good resolution-HEA-spice scene. Boo.
And I'm totally on board with JP being worried about him turning into his father, but I needed more on that front. AND more redemption afterwards. He never really overcame that. Cammy brought him back. Give me some MMC character growth plz. :')
IDK. Mixed feelings. Was really enjoying the first half, but the last half didn't do it for me.

I would also like to immediately award points for improper use of a Zamboni machine. because that scene ate. So freaking spicy and will live rent free in my head!
Okay this one was so good! I would also like to immediately award points for improper use of a Zamboni machine. because that scene @@e Kenna hooked me with this Hawkeyes spinoff series and I feel like this is a great place for new readers to jump in! got the pleasure of listening to this one on audio and Shricaudiobooks did a fantastic job on this one Alex and Maeve brought so much depth and emotion to JP and Cammy. Ans speaking of JP and Commy, late up every second of this. JP is so down bad he chased this girl for three years, and when he got her and screwed it io, he vowed to do whatever it takes to get her back! Including getting traded to her father's team and risking his career. This book was spicy (he talks to her in French
Kenna hooked me with this Hawkeyes spinoff series and I feel like this is a great place for new readers to jump in! I got the pleasure of listening to this one on audio and holy moly, they did a fantastic job on this one Alex and Maeve brought so much depth and emotion to JP and Cammy.
Ans speaking of JP and Commy, l ate up every second of this.
JP is so down bad he chased this girl for three years, and when he got her and screwed it up, he vowed to do whatever it takes to get her back! Including getting traded to her father's team and risking his career.
This book was spicy (he talks to her in French🥵🥵 and he woos her by sending her pucks with messages on them. 🫶🏻
This book also has great found family vibes! It’s totally worth the read and the listen!
oh my god this book was terrible. first of all: how OLD is seven (what kind of name is that????) because he’s got a daughter in his 20s in the beginning and he’s STILL playing hockey???? and having beef with other 20 something year olds? at his big age? seven was way too involved in his grown ass daughter’s love life and him being the catalyst for the third act break up was ridiculous. also, you’re like close to 50 and have a toddler (wtf?) and still sit and have beef with a grown ass man because of your assumption that he’s just like his dad??? oh her dad pissed me off to no end.
sometimes it felt like i was reading the second book in the series and i missed the first book with how the info dumping went in the beginning. there was just “my mom lied about who my dad was for half my life ok anyways” and we never touched on her mom or anything, but she never said they had no relationship. just felt like a huge plot hole.
another plot hole was the one girl aria i think getting fired by the new owner - side note to that: they made a huge deal out of this new owner and nothing ever came of it? like they introduced him in a way that made it seem like he was going to be this villain and then he ended up not being too bad and it was like uh okay? and he just randomly fired the girl and they never delved into it/fought for her? then cammy’s anxiety about being fired FOR SOMETHING HER DAD DID was so weird and a bizarre side thing that didn’t even need to be there.
too much was going on in this book and yet not enough happened. the reason behind the night he left was soooooo annoying like you couldn’t be honest with her? yet you loved and trusted her? ok dude sure yeah. i hate read this book and could not stand anyone in it.
I know its not fair to judge a book because I didnt read the earlier books in the series, but since this is technically a spin-off, I feel that I can complain about not having backstory on the other characters. it was enough to fill in the blanks, but still annoying.
I did love JP's commitment to Cammy, but JP is a weak MF and didnt grow throughout the story, and Cammy is so desperate she gave him so many chances. I didnt feel like either character grew at all, made sacrifices, or learned any lessons.
additionally- two typos that spelled "peace" instead of "piece"? come on.
and ps, I hate angelica. useless to the story, the San Diego secret didnt even make any sense. she clearly means way more to JP than was let on, except we didn't get any background on that so I didnt even know what she does for a living and I think that sisterly role is BS.
I really liked this audiobook! The story was an easy read with great characters - and wow JP has it bad for Cammy! They shared this one night together…and things went sideways. A year and a half later he ends up on the Seattle Hawkeyes, and now they are forced to work together…
The narrators did a great job - I especially loved the banter and the chemistry and tension between Cammy and JP - and the way Alex voices JP, especially with the scenes in French was so good!! He was so charming and It was a lot of fun listening to him try and win Cammy over!!
Maeve brought so many layers to Cammy - she was hardworking and witty but also really hurt by JP. I loved it as her walls slowly started to fall!
I especially loved The Bet scene! If you love hockey romances with banter and tension and a second chance romance, I would definitely give this a listen!
✨What To Expect: 🏒Hockey Romance ✌️Second Chance 🚫Coach’s Daughter 🩵Workplace Romance ❤️🔥Forced Proximity ☕️She Loves Coffee…And He Knows Her Order 🔥He Speaks French To Her 🥅A Bet
I really loved this one. Read in one sitting, it got me since page one. There’s just something about a second chance, forbidden romance that always hits right. Cammy was such a sweet, relatable character. And JP was more complicated with a difficult past and so misunderstood, but had a heart of gold. And boy, this man was obsessed. There was a lot of angst, pining, and miscommunication, really well done. Watching them both fight for each other to get their happy ending was everything. Writing flowed like it was nothing. Highly recommend. Thank you so much to the author and Chasing Book PR for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review
JP and Cammy shared one unforgettable night, followed by an unexpected falling out. Now he’s back and he’s signed with Cammy’s dad’s team so he's determined to win Cammy back. But there’s one thing standing in his way, he still can’t tell her the full truth about that night, because it involves someone else. As they slowly reconnect, their chemistry reignites, but new obstacles threaten to pull them apart once again.
Alex Kydd and Maeve York are perfectly cast as JP and Cammy. Kydd captures JP’s sweet, golden retriever charm effortlessly, while York nails Cammy’s mix of strength and vulnerability. This is a heartwarming hockey romance with depth, chemistry, and emotion, definitely worth a listen!
Thank you, Kenna King and Must Love Audio for the ALC.
