We survived the invasion and beat the aliens. But they left something behind…
Humanity is rebuilding after a devastating invasion. But the growing towns all have walls to protect them from the monsters. Created in alien labs, the monsters hide in the swamps, rivers, and forests—breeding, mutating. Every now and then, they crawl out of the shadows.
That’s where I come in. I’m Jameson Steele, the leader of Hunter Squad—the toughest group of soldiers in New Sydney. It’s our job to keep people safe and secure.
We’re the monster hunters.
When I get a panicked call from my childhood friend, Greer Baird, my usual cool goes out the window.
Greer’s an engineer working on a huge dam project that’s vital to our water supply. There’s a giant, deadly monster in the lake, it’s killed some of her people, and she’s in danger.
I’ve wanted Greer for a long time, but she’s too good for too smart, too driven, and out of my league.

Series: Hunter Squad #1 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
As soon as I saw that Hackett was writing a spin-off series of Hell Squad I got excited. I love the Hell Squad series and was so excited to see what the future of this world would look like, and meet all the couples' children. Well, this book did not disappoint and I am so excited to read more from this series now.
While this is a spin-off series, you don’t need to read the Hell Squad series before reading this. Reading Hell Squad will just give you a little bit better understanding of the alien invasion and the previous couples whose children we are meeting in this. There are references to those couples and the invasion in this book, but you don’t need to read that series to understand what is happening.
Jameson Steel, son of Marcus and Elle (Hell Squad #1), is leader of the Hunter Squad, which is tasked with hunting down the hybrid monsters that were originally created by the Gizzida but have since mutated and bred. When his childhood friend, Greer Baird, calls saying a giant monster is attacking the dam project she is working on, he rushes to help. Working together they defeat the monster, and finally admit their feelings for each other along the way.
Jameson is a tough, protective, and determined leader who won’t stop until all the hybrid monsters are killed. While Jameson has a lot of his father’s characteristics, he didn’t feel like a copy, which is always good for a spin-off featuring previous couples children. Jameson is a strong leader who will take risks if it means protecting his team and friends. Much like his father, I liked Jameson a lot.
Greer is an engineer working on rebuilding a dam that is vital to the survivors water supply. She has wanted Jameson since she was young, but always thought she was viewed as a sibling so never pursued it. While Greer was an engineer, she was still her parents' child. We see she inherited her fathers sniper skills and her mothers determination to survive and defeat the enemy.
Jameson and Greer had an intense and fast paced relationship. They both have been pining for each other for years and this monster attack made them finally admit it to each other. Once that happened, they wasted no time getting together. I enjoyed their fast paced relationship interspersed with dealing with giant tentacle monsters.
As someone who read and loved the Hell Squad series though, I loved seeing their future and meeting their children. We get to meet multiple former squad members' children in this and I am really excited to learn more about them as this series progresses. I am especially curious to see how much like their parents they act and what careers they have chosen.
While this is a spin-off of Hell Squad and set in the same world, it felt almost like a new world because it's been years since the invasion and defeat of the Gizzida. The world isn’t the same anymore and the survivors are starting to reclaim the world again. Also the creatures within this series are fascinating because they are mutated creations leftover from the invasion and they are not just brainless monsters. I am really curious to see what happens next in this series and what other kinds of creatures they come across.

It’s been TEN YEARS since we first met Hell Squad, but it’s been THIRTY for them. Time flies when you’re having fun – and when you’re kicking slimy alien ass off our planet!
We first met the Hell Squad at the beginning of their series, just after the rampaging alien Gizzida had invaded Earth and were doing their damndest to strip this world of all of its resources.
Over the course of the 20-book series, the members of the Hell Squad and the survivors that gathered around a hidden military base in Australia’s Blue Mountains fought back against the Gizzida and finally managed to throw them back into space – with the help of hidden survivors at other bases around the world.
But the Gizzida didn’t go down easy – and they left plenty of trouble behind them. Including Gizzida/Terran hybrids that weren’t eliminated by the superweapon that eliminated the ‘pure’ Gizzida from the planet.
The Hunter Squad series opens thirty years after the end of the final book – and battle! – in the Hell Squad series. And that’s plenty of time for the children of those earlier heroes to be born, grow into adulthood, and take up the fight that their parents are still fighting – because the job’s not done until the last Gizzida hybrid burns. Or explodes. Or whatever works.
The books in the previous series were all about the combo of adrenaline chills and hot thrills of picking away at the Gizzida while one pair of heroes in each story finds the Happy For Now that they hoped could turn into a Happy Ever After – and they did. Based on this first entry in the new series, it looks like the Hunter Squad is planning to follow the same pulse-pounding pattern.
Hunter Squad leader Jameson Steele, the son of Marcus and Elle Steele, the protagonists of that very first book in the first series, has been in love with Greer Baird, the daughter of Shaw and Claudia Baird, the happy couple in book 7, quite possibly forever. Or at least the minute he noticed that Greer wasn’t just one of the guys – even if she absolutely can kick ass like one.
But Greer, like Jameson’s mother before her, is one of the brains in this band of survivors, and Jameson is definitely part of the brawn. The leader of it, in fact. But still, her leadership of one of the science/engineering teams that is helping put their civilization back together gives Jameson a really terrible case of the “I’m not worthy’s” – pretty much exactly like his dad felt around his mother.
So he’s been manfully pining from a respectable distance. He doesn’t want to mess up their deep friendship, and he honestly doesn’t want to hear her badass parents – after all, they helped save the whole entire planet – confirm what he’s always believed. That he’s not worthy of their daughter – even if he is. Of course he is, and not just because his parents are ALSO badasses who helped save the planet.
But when the latest generation of Terran-adapted Gizzida hybrid monstrosities come for Greer and her team on a remote project, it’s up to Jameson and the Hunter Squad to save the day, and the future, so he and Greer finally have a chance at their own HEA.
It’s the next-generation for both the Hell Squad AND the monsters they fought, and the rematch is already fantastic!
Escape Rating A-: Very much like that other “Next Generation”, this first book in the Hunter Squad series needs a bit of set up. For those of us who remember the Hell Squad series fondly but read it back when it came out, that setup serves as both a needed and absolutely desired bit of business, because we all loved those people, wanted them to get their collective HEAs and put Earth back on track. It’s fantastic to see how well they’ve done with the chances they created – and not at all surprising that there are still plenty of fields and aliens left to conquer.
For readers who are starting here – and one could (at least until the temptation to start at the beginning got to be too much) – that same setup gets a new reader stuck into this brave new world, hands over an informative scorecard to help a newbie figure out who they players are this time around, and generally introduces everyone, new and old, to the situation the survivors are in thirty years after they celebrated their Independence Day on the Gizzida.
And in the middle of that fantastic (re-)introduction, there’s a sexy friends-into-lovers romance between the two characters who are clearly going to be leading this new round of fighting, along with a forward-thinking technical project that is capable of moving the survivors’ return to civilization a great leap forward. If they can protect it from the undersea monster determined to suck it – and them – back into the depths.
If you’re wondering what the Gizzida were like, and speaking in a roundabout way about that other ‘Original Series’ and ‘Next Generation’, the Gizzida are what you’d get if the Gorn got assimilated by the Borg. Both the Gorn and the Borg were intelligent, space-faring species, so the resultant alien species is too. All the rapacious planet-stripping for resources of the Borg, with a bit more of the individuality – and the reptilian nature and appearance – of the Gorn.
However, the Gizzida/Terran hybrids the Gizzida created to adapt to life on Earth used a lot of Terran fauna in their hybridization, so they’re not as intelligent as their progenitors. Or at least they aren’t YET. As far as the surviving humans know. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover that they are NOW, or are headed that way. We’ll see sooner or later, and I’d expect sooner.
Perhaps we’ll get a hint of that in the next book in the Hunter Squad series, North, coming early in April to an ereader or bookstore near you. Or at least one near me, because I can’t wait!
I enjoyed the books I read in Anna Hackett’s Hell Squad; the stories and characters were fresh and authentic. When I saw this “new generation” series, I decided to give it a miss because I did not see how that would work. But Jameson, book one in the new Hunter Squad series kept on appearing on my suggested reading list, and I thought: Why not? So, I downloaded the book and left it on my TBR list for a while and finally got to it this week. In a nutshell, it was an okay read, but it did reinforce my initial hesitancy, and I don’t know if I will be continuing with this series.
Thirty years after the defeat of the aliens (known as the Gizzida) at the hands of the human survivors, the Hell Squad members have procreated, and their progeny is introduced in this book. The focus is on Jameson, the son of Marcus and Elle Steele, and Greer, the daughter of Shaw and Claudia Baird. The two grew up together and were practically raised as siblings/best friends. Both have been harboring non-brotherly and sisterly feelings for the other but have never acted on it. Jameson never made a move on Greer because he thought he was not good enough for her. Greer similarly kept her feelings to herself because Jameson never showed a romantic interest in her. When a monster attacks the site where Greer is managing the building of a dam, her first action is to call Jameson for help. With assistance from the rest of the Hunter Squad, Jameson and Greer battle the monsters left behind by the Gizzida. Thus begins an action-packed adventure that keeps Jameson and Greer in each other’s orbit, forcing them to address their suppressed feelings for each other.
What worked for me was catching up with Marcus, Shaw, Cruz, and their respective partners, and I liked that they were doing well and still living their HEAs. The introduction to all the “children” and getting insight into their personalities were done well. Then there was the fast-paced action that made the book interesting and kept this reader on her toes.
However, using the word “monsters” for the new creatures did not work for me. It reminded me of the monster-in-the-closet stories old folk told to scare children into behaving. I wish the author gave these creatures a different, more adult-like name—that one word, unfortunately, removed any chance I had of viewing the plot and characters as adult-themed. To add, none of the characters’ ages were mentioned; the only indication given was that the war was won thirty years ago. From this, I deduced that the characters were thirty years of age or younger. Something else that did not help were the constant references to their parents (the first generation). I understand there is a link between this series and Hell Squad, but the constant mention of Marcus et al on almost every second page strengthened the notion of this being more YA, and I just could not take the action and characters seriously despite the spicy scenes.
Speaking of the characters, I liked everyone, including Jameson and Greer. Although, the story could have done with more background information on Jameson and Greer’s backgrounds in the relationship arena. Going by the information that was given, Jameson must have lived a monkish existence because there is no mention of any other woman—in his past or present—during the years he was pining for Greer. On Greer’s side, one recent boyfriend was mentioned; no one else, though. Also, if you’re pining for someone, why get involved with a different person? I honestly do not see the logic in that, but this might explain the high rate of divorces we have in the real would—people settle, and for the most part, it does not work out.
Other things that bugged me were: • All these “children” practically grew up in the same household given how close their parents were/are, and now it seems they will be partnering up with each other (at least North’s book will have an “outsider” joining them, so there’s hope). I don’t know, hey, it feels just a little bit incestuous. • Greer (as so many of this author’s FMCs) being the aggressor in all things bedroom related. She seemed to always be thinking about s€x, even in the most dangerous of situations. • Jameson and Greer’s declaration of love had me confused, but Jameson got it right, at least. Greer’s response, however, had me scratching my head. If a guy tells you he loves you, and you respond with “I’m falling hard and fast for you too …”, then I have questions. What’s more, one of Greer’s monologues included the line “I am going to fall in love with Jameson” like it’s a choice …
Aside from a few proofing issues, the writing and storytelling was okay, but it felt like it was aimed at a younger audience, and I am not sure if that was the intention here. So, if you enjoy YA, then you will certainly enjoy this book.
I thought we'd seen the last of the bleeping Gizzida but when they fled the ragtag bunch of survivors who kicked their scaly asses, they left behind some of their experiments. Experiments that have continued to mutate and hybridise and now a new generation of warriors are needed to combat them. Enter Hunter Squad!
Jameson (son of Marcus and Elle (Hell Squad #1), leads Hunter Squad. He and his team leap from Quadcopters, hunt big nasties and are all around heroes to the other non-combatant survivors. He's never been one for relationships though, How can he when the next mission may be the one that unalives him.
Greer, (daughter of Claudia and Shaw (Hell Squad #7) is an amazing engineer and is working on keeping power going to their small encampments and towns. But her latest project is plagued by some nasties and she finally calls in Jameson to eradicate them. These two...oh lordy they have been circling each other for years. Neither of them wanted to rock their friendship, and their families are so close - things would get hella messy if things went wrong!
Jameson is rough, tough, and a great friend and team-mate. He's been a bit of a player but Greer has always been his...everything. Greer is very much her parents daughter - she's crazy smart, brave, determined, opinionated and a hard worker. She is also one helluva shot!
These two may go from zero to 100 in 0.5 seconds but they've already done the getting to know you thing for the last 20-odd years! They already know each others quirks, flaws and foibles. Now they need to get to know the hidden parts, the parts that they keep deep inside themselves, only letting a trusted few ever get close enough to see. And can I say that whilst Shaw may be the Sniper in the family, Claudia is the one Jameson should worry about upsetting the most, lol. The bonding scene between Marcus and Shaw was hilarious!
You don't need to have read the Hell Squad series to understand this world but it would help you see the evolution of the fight back from the Gizzida Invasion to now.
There is some blood/gore and some co-workers don't make it to the end of the book.
We’re back in the post apocalyptic world of Hell Squad, and this time we are with the next generation- sons and daughters of the original band of survivours from the Hell Squad series. That means we get a few Hell Squad cameos, as well as a glimpse of a LOT of related characters from that series. Hell Squad fans rejoice! This book features Jameson Steele, son of Marcus and Elle; and Grier Baird, daughter of Shaw and Claudia. Jameson heads up the Hunter Squad, an elite team that works to rid the world of the monsters left behind by the Gizzida, and their mutated/evolved descendants. The monsters are a constant threat to the humans striving to survive in the world, and Hunter Squad has a number of very capable members, who were trained by their expert and experienced parents to be the very best. Grier is an engineer in charge of rebuilding an important dam. A longtime friend of Hunter Squad, she calls them in when a monster appears near their dam, attacking the workers on it. Grier isn’t without her own abilities, as befits one of the children of famed Hell Squad members, and she works with the Hunter Squad team, as they try to figure out the best way to get rid of the monster, without contaminating the water.
This is a fast read, as the book is on the shorter side. It can definitely be read as a standalone- no need to have read the Hell Squad series first, but I do recommend reading that series at some point, for at least context clues, and an introduction to the secondary characters that are mentioned in this book. As first in the series, it sets up subsequent books, ending with a book hook for the next book. There’s a lot of action, some adventure, a little romance, and a bit of steam; making it a great introduction to SFR for new readers, and an enjoyable revisit to Anna Hackett’s fan favourite world. This is a great SFR story for fans of the genre, the author, and for those who are limited on time.
So, we’re back with the Hell Squad – well back with their children, now all grown up and ready to find their own love interests and do some monster hunting and killing on the side! It is great to go back to where the Hell Squad left off – the world has been rid of the aliens, but not all of the monsters are gone and thus the need for Hunter Squad and others like them.
Leader of Hunter Squad is Jameson Steele and while he is a very able monster hunter, Greer Baird is an engineer tasked with rebuilding a dam. These two have known each other since childhood but Jameson has been keeping his distance because he has feelings for Greer that he thinks he shouldn’t act on. When a call comes in from Greer and it turns out that she is in desperate need of his help, Jameson drops everything and rushes to help. Sparks fly, as do monster tentacles. Jameson and Greer have serious chemistry, but will Jameson ever look at Greer as more than a childhood friend? Can Greer get him to let his guard down?
There’s something afoot with the monsters and this is just a lead into what I think will be the thread that carries through the series, working out how and why the monsters are behaving the way they are and how to stop them.
This was a very interesting first in the new series. You don’t have to have read the Hell Squad series to start this series, but my advice would be read Hell Squad first to get a really good understanding and background to why the world in these stories is the way it is.
While I really enjoyed going back to Australia after the alien invasion, and seeing the offspring of the Hell Squad and also some cameos of Hell Squad members, aka the parents, I felt that the story was a bit short and rushed. I long for stories that are a bit longer and that have much more going on. Nevertheless, this was a great first in a new series and I cannot wait for the next instalment!
OMG! Hell Squad is back, kinda! EARTH HAS SURVIVED THE HORRIBLE ALIEN GIZZIDA INVASION AND 30 YEARS LATER, THE SURVIVORS’ KIDS ARE STEPPING UP TO TAKE OVER! I believe Hell Squad is one of the best sci-fi/romance series ever written. 30 years ago, the people of Earth defeated the alien monsters and have been rebuilding the cities since. Hunter Squad takes place in Sydney, Australia, the same as Hell Squad. The kids of Hell Squad are now in charge of rebuilding safe cities for survivors. Making this new world “Safe” is what Hunter Squad does. Jameson Steele is the leader of Hunter Squad, just like his dad, Marcus Steele led the famous Hell Squad. The alien Gizzida is gone but they left terrifying monsters behind. Mixing all kinds of DNA, unimaginable monsters lurk all over Earth and Hunter Squad plans to hunt and eliminate those monsters. Greer Baird, daughter of Shaw and Claudia of Hell Squad, is an engineer working to rebuild the Sydney dam to provide a much-needed water supply to the locals. When a monster lurking in the water causes murder and mayhem the Hunter Squad is brought in. Jameson has the hots for Greer. Greer has the hots for Jameson too but neither acts on their feelings until their lives are in danger. I LOVE THEIR SWEET ROMANCE. Jameson is a big strong take-charge hottie, and Greer may have a big brain, but she is also a sharpshooter who doesn’t back down from danger. The Hunter Squad consists of very deadly and interesting characters, and I can’t wait to read more about each of them. I LOVE THAT MANY CHARACTERS FROM HELL SQUAD WEAVE IN AND OUT OF THIS STORY. I suggest readers read “Marcus Book 1 of Hell Squad” to learn about the beginning, the invasion, what a struggle life became, and to meet the characters of the Hell Squad series. linda
It's been thirty years since the alien invasion and the HS crew have lived well. I mean, they managed to survive, right? They've also had children who were able to grow up into strong individuals and they're rebuilding the planet. Now it's time for their kids to do their part in keeping the people of Earth safe.
As it turns out, while the Gizzida have been defeated, they left plenty of nasty hybrid monsters behind. Jameson, as the leader of Hunter Squad, is at the forefront of fighting the hybrids. He's also deeply smitten with Greer, but tries to convince himself he's absolutely not because he grew up with her and, BOY, he's not fooling anyone. Except maybe Greer.
It turns out, she's also smitten and doing her level best to pretend they're just besties living their lives in a post-invasion world. Seriously, though, everybody knows these two have the hots for one another. It takes a monster in the lake for these two to admit that maybe those bestie feelings are a little more than just friends.
While coming to these romantic conclusions, they're also faced with the idea that maybe the hybrids are more intelligent than the survivors have given them credit for. They're communicating and seem to be planning. Possibly. It's hard to tell with critters than don't speak the same language as they do. What is comes down to are the hybrids appear to be working together and that's something the survivors haven't seen before. What does it mean in the long run? Probably nothing good. But Hunter Squad and the other survivors will undoubtedly rise to meet the challenge. *thumbs up*
Do you have to read the Hell Squad series to enjoy this book? Not necessarily BUT I think to fully appreciate & understand all the characters you should at-least read a few of them!
I re-read several as it’s been years before this one and I’m glad I did! Over half of the old teams kids make appearances in this book which means there will hopefully be plenty more to come!
Id recommend you can just read Marcus & Shaw’s books before this one since, 20 is an outlandish request obviously 😅 I promise though if you’re anything like me the moment characters are introduced in this book you’ll want to read their parents books too!
The world is based 25-30 years after HellSquad & Right out the gate we’re introduced to a plethora of our favorite Teams kids all grown up! If I hadn’t read all the hellsquad books it might have felt like there wasn’t enough world building or backstory BUT seeing how this is the “future series” of a 15+ book series it really isn’t needed!
I like the direction Anna has taking it with the “Hunter Squad” feels like she’s setting us up for a new series that features all our favorite beloved teams in a way ♥️
For Hell Squad - not all the books were my favorite, some I think focused to much on smut and not enough story (Example: Theron) but with a series that long they can’t all have in depth story plots I guess. I listed my favorites below I think you could read to get a good grasp without reading them all if you wanted!
-Marcus -Gabe -Shaw -Finn -Ash -Griff -Tane!
Want more? In this world I’d go -Roth -Niko -Devlin
Hell Squad was my absolute favorite series when it first came out I wait with baited breath for each new release and finally with the last book I cried a bit knowing it was over. I'd have too say goodbye to book friends who I would miss. Imagine my delight and surprise when I saw the title of this new book! A dream come true I get to go back to the original Hell Squad universe but now its the rebuild after the war and the stories are about my favorite characters grown Children! Yes , yes ,yes and once again I'm hooked. In this first book its Marcus and Elle son Jamison who is the leader of Hunter Squad. He and his teammates/family go out and hunt down the monster the Grisidia left behind when they were defeat after the war. He's been in love with Greer who is Shaw and Claudia's daughter. She an accomplished engineer and a crack shot just like her father. She's been nursing a crush on Jamison for years and when her damn project falls under attack by some monsters she calls Jamison to help her. Tensions arise when everyone realizes that the monsters left behind and mutating and evolving.then are now organizing and working together. That means their leaning and that very Dangerous. In perfect Anna Hackett fashion the book was actions packed, fast paced with characters that have tons of chemistry and world building that sucks you in and keeps you wanting more. Love it! Highly recommend and I can't wait to read the next in the series! I'm so happy to be back I get to read about old friends while making new ones! Highly recommend🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥🌟💖🔥💖💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow such a fun, action packed read and I’m over the moon to be back in this world . I thoroughly enjoyed this author’s previous series about Hell Squad and The Berserkers so to catch up about thirty years later with their offspring has me beyond happy . In a world that was virtually destroyed by aliens the survivors are still plagued by the monsters left behind but Hunter Squad run by Jameson are more than up for the challenge ! It’s just too bad that his childhood friend Greer has grown up to be such a gorgeous and dare I say independent thinking distraction ? It’s always a fabulous time when Ms Hackett writes about her native Australia and the characters that she invents to live there . Jameson is the son of Marcus who started my journey into this author’s work and this was just as fast paced and exciting as previous stories set in this world . It’s just fascinating to read about the creatures that get dreamed up although if truthful they are definitely the stuff of nightmares . Our hero doesn’t feel he is the right one for Greer but that girl certainly knows what she wants so expect fun and games as this couple get to grips with what’s happening around them and obviously each other ! This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
What I noticed about this story is that it was VERY short… I rarely finish a book in one morning! But I could not put it down! Jameson is the leader of the Hunter Squad and their mission is to protect the population from the evolving mutations left behind after the Hell Squad defeated the aliens 30 years ago. His parents are Marcus and Elle… Greer is leading her own team of engineers rebuilding the Warragamba dam and hydro electric station.. her parents are Shaw and Claudia. Her team is attacked by an aquatic monster in the dam and two of her team are lost. Greer calls the Hunter Squad for assistance. They check the shoreline and they found a disturbing evidence of different mutants meeting together.. They realise that the creature will have to be electrocuted so it does not contaminate the water.. but when (on the second try) they kill it, they are surprised by the arrival of a much larger creature which attacks them and J&G are pulled into the water and away from their teams. They survive that, but are captured by humanoid creatures with mutant dogs, who were waiting for the aquatic creature on shore. The team arrives and rescues them but more dogs appear and they barely survive with the arrival of their helicopter. J&G spend 3 days “recovering” then they meet their dads…🤣 Next book will be the Hunter squad’s medic called North.

This was a great introduction to the new Hunter Squad and its members. 30 years post Hell Squad, you now have the “kids” of the original players from the original set of books.
This book centres around Jameson and Greer, both whose parents are friends and they grew up together. Jameson Steel is the leader of Hunter Squad, while Greer Baird is an engineer.
Jameson and his team hunt the monsters that were left after the alien invasion from Hell Squad, finally admitting their defeat and leaving … but of course, they leave nasty presents. It just so happens that one of these “monsters” decides to make Greer’s group of engineers who are working on a dam to try and provide much-needed fresh water, as its snacks.
Overall the monsters are gross, unpredictable and yucky (which Anna is always so good at), Jameson’s team is fearless in the face of this nastiness and Greer is a major badass who is perfect for Jameson. And of course, they do finally get out of each other’s way and realize that.
As with most of her books that centre around either alien invasions or sci-fi adventures, it’s a quick, fast and crazy read. She is amazing in how she manages to combine action-packed pages with really wonderful characters. I’m looking forward to continuing on with the series.
Now I have to admit Hell Squad is a series of her’s that for some unknown reason, I’ve never read. Time to sit down and read that now, I think!!
Jameson, a page-turning sci-fi fiction romance, features danger, fun times, gripping suspense, non-stop action, admirable characters, a thunderstorm of emotions, and flaming passionate romance.
Story takes place in New Sydney, Australia. The children’s parents in this story vanquished alien invaders years prior, setting the stage to learn new life-threatening monsters exist. Jameson, son of Marcus and Elle Steele, is the leader of Hunter Squad with a team to assist him in destroying the monsters the evil aliens left behind. Greer is the daughter of Shaw and Claudia Baird. She is intelligent, beautiful and working on a dam for filtered water. For years Jameson and Greer have been best friends, as they grew up passionate desires for each other stay hidden. Their story is a wild ride with obstacles to conquer before they reach a happy forever.
Fabulous start to a new series: backstories bring you closer to the characters. The author does a wonderful job showing how Greer and Jameson’s courage, protectiveness and love shine in this read. Enjoyed this exciting read and look forward to the next book in this series. Reviewed a pre-release copy of this book.
Jameson Steele is the son of Marcus and Elle Steele from a former series by this author. He hunts the hybrid monsters that were left after the Gizzida were destroyed in that former series of books. The monsters pop up occasionally and his squad of trained hunters is tasked with getting rid of them.
This book is the first book in a new series that takes place some number of years after Hell Squad and the Berserkers defeated the Gizzida. Greer Baird is the daughter of Shaw and Claudia Baird and is an engineer tasked with reinforcing a dam so that it can provide a reliable water source for the growing population of Gizzida survivors around what used to be Sydney, Australia.
It’s fascinating to get to see the offspring of former heroes and heroines come into their own and develop their own heroic traits. And it’s equally fun to think of the folks in the original series as grandparents!
This looks to be a fun and exciting series and I’m sure there will be loads of danger and near-misses with various creatures. And there will be lots of folks falling in love. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
After having enjoyed Hell Squad so much and its battle to eliminate the Gizzida from Earth, I loved this follow-up with the children of the intrepid characters. Many strange creatures were left behind and the mission is to hunt them down. In this first story, we are introduced not only to Jameson Steele, son of Marcus Steele, in a full leadership role but to many of the children of the old squad who seem to have inherited their parents' skills and commitment to the fight. Jameson finds himself fighting against his feelings and emotions because of a strong attraction to the skilled Greer Baird. Amidst the horror of the battle, we see how romance manifests and the suspenseful and exciting scenes take over all the attention. It is extremely interesting how we see the characters in action in this new adventure that begins many hours of enjoyment.
Fair notice, I’m a huge fan of the hell squad series and I love this spin off with the children of the original series. There was a great set up at the end of Hell Squad and it paid off seamlessly for this series. As the children (and their parents, the original cast of characters) continue to battle the evil alien and now hybrid animals that are causing a lot of harm. In the midst, love wins out and the first story of this series is with Jameson and his best friend Greer. Jameson does not think that he is worthy of Greer but through trials and tribulations, they find their way to each other. I adored all the different characters and loved this new setting. A wonderful, fast paced romance full of nail biting action.
I'll be short and sweet on this review. Being a super fan and avid reader of Anna Hackett's books, I was beyond ecstatic when "Jameson " came out. A legacy story about the kids of the Hell Squad book heroes- who have taken up the mantle of protecting the world from the deadly hybrid creatures/abominations created as a result of the defeated aliens experimentations on local animals and humans. Whew. Basically these 2nd generation superhero adults are just as tough, hot, determined as their parents. Anna Hackett managed to continue the series in a fresh, fun way that makes it a joy to read. I was so happy to get back into the Hell Squad universe. It was a pleasure for me to read and review this book!!
Jameson is convinced Greer wants and needs someone as book smart as her, but Greer proves him wrong when she gets dragged into a fight to the death alongside Hunter squad, she proves that book smart doesn't mean she's not hunter smart...or the best shot out of all of them. And equally hunter smart doesn't mean that Jameson isn't clever or the perfect man for her. He is fearless, an amazing leader, plans intricate missions, outsmarts monsters, has the respect of his team and worships Greer both inside and outside the bedroom...she cannot ask for more! What a fantastic introduction to Hunter Squad, I cannot wait for more epic battles, more sexy warriors and more flirty banter between Marc and his Sparrow! I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Oh my goodness, I have been dying for more Hell Squad books and the author did one better - she brought us a spin-off series with the 'kids' of the original series. While you don't have to have read Hell Squad to be able to follow this story, it really gives greater meaning to what Earth has to deal with in the aftermath of the Gizzida invasion. Jameson and Greer, childhood friends and kids of two couples from the first series, have been pining for each other for years, but now, working together, finally let that pining turn into so much more. Expect to get caught up in this fast paced and exciting read that's full of action, danger, suspense and hot chemistry. I'm beyond thrilled with this new series and can't wait for more :D
Loved this book! So great “seeing” the second generation of Hell Squad. But reading that series (while it’s an awesome series too) is not necessary. Jameson is son of Marcus and Elle, and definitely a copy of his dad. And Greer is the daughter of Shaw and Claudia. But I just said you didn’t need to read the previous, I’m just so excited to get back into this world and see how things have changed some 30 years after the Gizzida were defeated.
Greer is working on a dam project to try to get more drinkable water to all, but when two of her workers disappear/taken by a monster in the water. She calls her childhood friend, Jameson, head of the Hunter Squad. It was fun watching the fireworks between these two.
So good to be back with a 2nd generation of Hell Squad!!!
Shaw and Claudia's daughter, Greer. Marcus and Ellen's son Jameson. Earth is still fighting off the monsters that the Gizzida left behind. Hunter Squads are trying to keep the population safe. Hunter Squad has the 2nd generation of Hell Squad. Jameson and Greer are circling each other. Trying not to damage a friendship. Thrown together to fight against monsters they finally admit their feelings. Fight off a bunch of monsters and face down Marcus, Shaw and Claudia. Great start. North and Jess are up next. Can't wait!!!!
Did anybody see it coming that mrs. Anna Hackett was secretly working on Hell Squad Next Gen? I freaked when I heard it, almost died of anticipation and then I devoured this book. It was everything I missed since finishing up Hellsquad. It has action, it has monsters, it has suspense, and the romance was amazing! Like chef’s kiss amazing! And the best news is that the second book is scheduled for April. I am glad that this book, in true Anna Hackett fashion, was everything it promised to be and more. And you should all read it ❤️
Jameson is a member of The Hunter Squad. Greer is a chief engineer .
Jameson and Greer have been friends growing up together. The second generation of ( Hell Squad) now called Hunter Squad going out and taking out the monsters left by The Gizzida 30 years later.
Greer calls Jameson that they have a monster by the dam project she is working on. Jameson and his team come to the rescue. Can they get the monster and have a Happily Ever After?
This book has suspense, danger, intrigue, and love.
I was so excited when I saw the book come up on my new releases. I loved the hell squad series and was so sad when it finished up. I felt like we still needed answers. Fast forward to this book and we get answers. The gang has settled down and have been rebuilding and the next generation has step forward. We get a look at the couples as the kids fall in love and protect the planet from what was left after the war. The book was so good and did not disappoint. Anna always writes a strong character and you just get swept away with her words.
The decendants of the original Hell Squad series have grown up and now carry on the good fight to rebuild a world ravaged by aliens. Jameson & Greer's long time friendship was something both of them didn't want to risk to reveal their honest attraction. When Jameson, the squad leader of Hunter Squad, comes to help Greer at her dam worksite he has to fight that attraction amidst the stress of the nasty alien hybrids attacks.
A good new start to a world ruined and trying to build a future for humanity.

Their parent's generation defeated the aliens, but now the next gen is battling the monsters the aliens created and left behind. Could these creations be even more dangerous than the original?
Excellent first book in Hackett's next generation Hell Squad (now Hunter Squad) alien monster hunters series. There's plenty of camaraderie, fighting, monster hunting, steam, and finding love in the middle of danger. I'm already looking to reading North's book next.
when you dream of revisiting a series and the author makes it happen
I did not know this series was out or even that it was coming. But damn am I so freaking happy!!! Hell squad was one of my absolute favorite series. Every single book was perfection and you never got bored each one just as good as the last. It’s that series that you looked forward too and knew you’d love it and could get out of any reading lull or book hangover if a new one came out. This one was just as good maybe even better because it was like getting to see all your best friends again
Omg. I absolutely LOVED the Hell Squad series, so to be getting a second generation series is literally making me so excited and happy! I’ve read a lot of the romance genre and subgenres, and I’ve still NEVER read anything like the Hell Squad series.
Jameson is starting it off with a bang, just like his parents did for the first series. And I loved that the FMC insisted on going on missions with him, AND HAD THE SKILLS TO BACK IT UP. Nothing more frustrating than an FMC who’s stubborn and fucks everything up. But oh my, she’s a powerhouse, just like her parents.
Can’t wait to see how the overarching plot goes, because Hell Squad’s was insane and this is shaping up to be the same. I’m feeling a reread coming on!
