Perus and the Nine Moons: The Stolen Sun

Rate this book
Nine Moons. Nine Trials. One Destiny

Across a Treacherous Race and Ancient Worlds. A Young Contender's Journey will Shape the Fate of Empires.

For years, young Perus has dreamed of competing in the Contest of Mastery, a grueling daylong footrace that will take him from the shelter of his home in the underground metropolis of Apelios through an untamed and treacherous journey that will test his mettle to the utmost.

He knows that if he wins, he will earn the right to go topside and travel off-world—allowing him, at last, to see the nine moons and stars for himself—just as he had heard in the tales of his childhood.

What he does not know is that, for him, the race is only the beginning. His journey will take him further than he ever imagined, bringing him face to face with a wicked foe whose dark designs once shattered an interplanetary empire. In order to claim his destiny, Perus will have to make new friends, defeat old monsters, and wholly master a long-forgotten mystic art form...all while harnessing mental powers and racing for his life.

Thank you very much, Netgalley and the publisher, for this ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

This book brought back the nostalgia of Percy Jackson in the sense that Perus was given a quest to complete with his friends, and he goes on this epic journey. At the start of the book, I was intrigued by this race, but once the race started and we started to diverge from the race, I became a bit lost with the amount of things thrown at me. Sadly, the confusion held me back from immersing myself in the story. However, the saving grace was that the world was unique and intriguing, and the writing was terrific.

While Perus and the Nine Moons was not for me, I recommend this to others because I don't believe anything was inherently wrong with the book.

The idea of the book is good but I don’t think the writer did a good job executing the idea. I understand that this is a part of a series but the first book was slow. The book lacked details in important parts of the main story (the part that will count in later books) and gave too many details in unimportant parts (the race). I wanted to enjoy it but I didn’t. I felt like this was dragged out. The second half of the book got better so I see potential for the second book but I probably won’t be picking up the second book based on this first book.

This book, and this author, have potential, but they aren't quite there yet. I will say something I believe is rarely said in fantasy. This book needed to be longer. It feels like we got 70% of the story rather than the whole one. What we got was good. It just didn't seem like enough. Maybe the author was placing us in the main characters shoes. If so, it was a masterful job. We were blundering along trying to figure things out, too.
