DNF @ 30%. This feels like female subservience propaganda. Why the fuck is this queen supposed to play second fiddle to a man who was crowned king solely because he mated her? A man whose race has systematically abused not just females, but a more vulnerable race of peoples? Because he is a good man and they assume “God chose him”? That’s fucking bullshit. He should be her consort, not king, and humble himself before her and the humans to lead the neph to follow in his example. Their very existence should have this story BEGGING for female leadership and forgiveness. Maybe that’s where it will go, but I’m over this story so I guess I will never know.

This would be a much more interesting story without the female submission and Christian propaganda. The FMC rules as Queen for almost a decade but as soon as she gets a mate she loses all her power and becomes a figurehead whose only purpose is to make babies. That’s the “culture” of the FMC society.

The King is Dead by Aimee Lynn is a romantasy with the most delicious tropes all combined into one beautiful little package! It’s the continuation of that HUGE cliffy from book one, The King Has Fallen.
To be 100% honest, I was not too excited about continuing on with The King is Dead after reading The King Has Fallen. Yes, I absolutely wanted resolution to that horrible cliffhanger but I low key despised Melek, our resident ML. It made me so happy that he removed his head from his nether regions and put his big boy pants on. I was relieved to also be able to follow Gall and meet Yilan’s sister, Izzy.
While The King is Dead falls under romantasy and is easy to get lost in, I appreciated the more mature themes that reside underneath the main storyline. This book does also have some religious elements but, as someone who is not incredibly religious, I applaud Aimee Lynn’s ability to work religion and spirituality into the storyline without the reader feeling like it’s being shoved down their throat. I truly believe anyone, regardless of religious beliefs, could pick up The King is Dead and enjoy it.
If you’re familiar with Aimee Lynn’s books then you already know she does an amazing job with character development and world building. By the end of the book, you truly feel like you went on an adventure with old friends (aka characters). If you are new to Aimee Lynn, you are in for a treat! But, strap in because you’re also in for the ride of your life. Aimee Lynn didn’t just hit a home run with The King is Dead… she hit that home run right into the stands while the bases were loaded 👏👏👏

I think I liked this book more than the first book! Once again, I think Lynn has written a unique and creative story compared to a lot of the other "romantasy" books out there. I'm not religious in the slightest, so I'm a little surprised that I enjoy this but, at the same time, maybe I shouldn't be? Without spoiling anything, in "The King is Dead", the story continues with Yilan and Melek who now have to face similar but different challenges now that they're with Yilan's people, the Shadekin. We also get more of Gall and we get to meet Yilan's sister, who are probably my two favorite characters EVER. I got frustrated with Yilan's views of her sister but it's part of her character growth.

Perfect Balance Between Fantasy Plot/World Building, Emotional Connection, and Spice! 5 Stars! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say I LOVED watching all of the characters grow and change organically as events unfold. Melek and Yilan’s thoughts and feelings are sometimes volatile and raw, but honest at all times, which I value as a person and a reader.
The thing that captivated me the most from the first book continued to captivate me in The King is Dead: the social dynamics and characters take on a life of their own and draw me in as if I’m living in this world. I’ve never found a way to connect with so many different characters and stay invested in each of their lives in a story!
This series has kept me on the edge of my seat and I just never know what will happen next: will I be crying from an unexpectedly touching moment or from heartbreak? Fanning myself? Raging? Pondering philosophical ideas and beliefs? There’s no telling, but I’m fully invested and can’t wait for the third book!

Yilan and Melek continue their journey, now away from Melek's people and base camp and in the kingdom of the Shadekin where they must both navigate the fragile politics. Yilan leads her people and Melek towards her vision for the future. I loved how Gall and Yilan's sisters characters developed throughout the book and Yilan learned they could both be independent.
The bonfire dance scene was so good; Can just imagine Melek's face!

Not as good as the first book
I flew through the first book and absolutely loved it. This second book was laborious to read. I found there was a lot of repetition and very drawn out scenes, like I skipped a few pages and still didn’t get lost. I kept reading (and skipping) because I really wanted to know what happens next. I hope this next book is better or I’ll probably loose interest. I’ve put down and stopped reading books for various reasons. This could potentially be one, but it depends how invested I get to wanting to know how the story develops.

What a world!
The bonfire dance and the battlefield. What a rush. I was so emersed I could almost hear the songs, see the embers. I felt like I was right there in the air with Melek. I just love it when authors build up a whole world and take you there. With legends and history and a myriad of cultures.. This series is great for people who are new to fantasy and enjoy a good world building. And the DRAMA. Can not wait to see what's next.

I love the blend of fantasy/romance/religion. This is a tale as old as time, good vs evil. Are people inherently evil or can they find redemption. This idea resonates with those who believe and don’t believe. This one is pretty spicy, I won’t say over kill but it got close for me.
I also LOVE the inclusion factor for those with disabilities! Even with differences we all still feel and biologically we crave intimacy.

Love this story
The second book did not disappoint. With the perfect blend of spice, plot twists, and love you can’t go wrong. I can’t wait for the next one to come out. This is my first series from Aimee Lynn, but i will definitely be reading more of her work. The multiple POV has me hooked! An Gall, OMG love him.

Drawn out action
A lot of scenes in this book felt like repeats of one another. It did a great job showing the struggles that the characters were trying to work through, but as a reader started to feel very repetitive seeing the same fights on repeat. Hopefully book 3 picks back up.

For sure not as good as the first one. Everyone is everyone’s mate and the only words the main characters seem to know is “MY MATE” over and over. The epilogue though, 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 cannot wait for the third book

Love reading the story unfold with Yilan and Melek. They are learning more about trusting each other and how the mate bond works. I am enjoying the new twists around each corner. Can’t wait to read book 3.

Soooo much happened in this book it was hard to put it down. It was so good! The way Melek and Yilan are coming together as a united front…..Gall and Istral have my heart, and Jann and Diadre??? Oh man that’s going to be good!!!!

I really wanted to love the sequel but the FMC completely lost her guts and abilities. The religious aspect again rubbed me the wrong way, maybe to close to real life Christians and it was hard for me to enjoy the story.
I did absolutely lose my mind when the MMC somehow gets to become the absolute ruler because he is marrying the FMC. She's portrayed as a strong,take no shit women and is completely taken out of her power because she has a vagina?
The author does seem to try to save face in this aspect by making it a "partnership" and FMC has to completely trust MMC but we could have that and FMC as the ruler.

Still interesting
The King Is Dead continued to pull me deeper into the series. I genuinely enjoy all of the characters, but this installment especially shines with its focus on Gall and Izzy, whom I adore wholeheartedly. Their story is beautifully written, emotionally engaging, and added so much heart to the overall narrative. Another strong entry that left me eager for more.
